I have been going to Erin at Carla Renee for about 7 months. I used to travel over an hour to my former hairdresser who retired. I was hesitant b/c I'm a redhead with curly hair. Both require experience and attention to my specific requests. Erin nailed it the first time. I was so excited to find someone who took the time to listen and followed-through. Red hair is tough and with Erin's color formula, I often get compliments from strangers. The curly cut was perfect as well. I recently went here and am disappointed in my curly cut. I was excited to find a salon near me that specializes in curly hair but the end result is not what I asked for. I received a bad haircut 2+ years ago at a different salon and I was finally feeling like I could go and get my haircut again. I was very careful when researching salons and thought this place would be a good fit. I mentioned in my booking that this was my first haircut in a while due to a bad experience and told my stylist. The salon also asked for pictures of my hair and sent a questionnaire asking what I wanted. I said multiple times that I wanted long layers and to keep most of my length. That did not happen. The stylist kept length in the back and gave me very short layers and I do not like the very poofy, volumized look. When I have gotten curly cuts in the past, it's like they are carving my curls with their scissors and making them fall nicely. The stylist here took portions of my hair and pulled them to the opposite side of my head to cut and give me very short layers. When dried, the curls get muddled together and do not even fall nicely. I feel like I have a shelf of short curls around my head. I wear my hair up and I cannot even wear it braided due to all the layers. When I shower I am reminded of what a hack job of a haircut I received and get sad all over again. Having mentioned my troubled past with haircuts in the booking (and in person), I thought that they would be very careful when cutting my hair. I am aware that my past heightens my current disappointment, but I think it is still worth to note to prospective customers that they are not able to achieve long layers. read more

I went to Cala Renee's over a decade ago a few times. But drifted away. Recently I wanted to try a Rezo haircut and was able to get one here, at Cala Renee's. I made an appointment with Katerina. She was great. She felt I was a good candidate for a Reno cut, and she was right. The way my hair falls now is wonderful and so easy to maintain. I have lived in Boston for 30 years and moved to the North Shore four years ago. I was still driving back to Boston to get my hair done, but started to feel like I needed a change. My hair was not looking good since I started to see a new stylist in Boston , and my suspicions were definitely confirmed when I started seeing Steph at Cala Renee Salon. Steph was fantastic and spent a very long time with me in my first appointment. She took pictures from all angles of my hair before we started to work together and showed me what it looked like. I knew it wasn't looking great, but I was really appalled to see what my stylist had been doing with my poor curls. Steph was patient and thorough and spent a long time helping repair my curls. I walked out of there looking and feeling great and I've been a loyal customer ever since. Do NOT go to this salon if you want a proper balayage for curly hair. I have never been more disappointed or betrayed by a salon in my life, especially with how I was treated by the salon after the service. I was incredibly excited for my appointment for a balayage and cut, but left with stringy, completely unblended highlights. I have had balayages at other salons for a decade and was confused why the service came out like it had. In shock, I felt like I had to go through the motions so I paid and left. However, the more I sat with it the more humiliated I felt. I went to another salon that was recommended to me by family to get a second opinion and the stylists there were absolutely horrified. The new salon said it was going to take an entire day to get my hair presentable, and at least another whole session to get it to look how I originally wanted it to be. I am not a confrontational person by nature but my new salon, countless friends, and family encouraged me to get a refund. After explaining the situation to the receptionist I was told that Cala had just stepped out but she'd call me back in half an hour. I had no problem with this, but half an hour quickly became an hour and a half. So I called back to inquire about my refund. I was told that the stylists were very busy and would call me back soon. Soon turned to another hour. The last time I called I was told no one could speak to me until 7pm. So you're telling me I needed to wait 5+ hours just to even SPEAK to someone about getting a refund for a service that wasn't what I even paid for. For reference balayages START at $170 and are the most expensive service offered. I wound up paying $300 for a cut and "balayage" and $65 for a tip. What I left with is very clearly not a balayage. I was patient and understanding until they started to send my calls directly to voicemail. That told me everything I needed to know. This salon is despicable. Again, if you value your curls DO NOT GO HERE. I have never left a negative review for a business in my entire life, but you do not treat people like this especially if you are at fault. read more

They took measures for safety and wiped everything down Was seen my Steph in February to have a hair cut and see what I could do for my cury hair. I have a lot of curly grey hair. My daughter is a hair stylist in NY and before I moved back to Massachusetts, I'd go to her salon. We have the same hair (except for color) and I trusted her absolutely to advise me on hair styles and give me cuts that look up to date and flattering. Now that I'm in MA, it's too far to go so I've been researching stylists and salons that specialize in curly hair. I tried one salon when I first moved here and although the stylist was skilled and I was happy with the cut, it felt very rushed. There was no time for consultation first and I definitely got an ageist vibe from the rest of the salon, which felt very unwelcoming, although not from my stylist. It was also not inexpensive and I didn't like feeling like I should just be grateful that they gave me an appointment. I then let my hair grow out and did some more research. I liked all the reviews I read on multiple sites for the Cala Renee Salon in Beverly and booked an appointment. They have a required pre-check in form online, asking for a picture of my hair. I also sent pictures of styles I wanted to aim for. On the day of my appointment, everyone in the place was really friendly. It was a relaxed but professional atmosphere. They even advised me where to find a working parking kiosk so I wouldn't get a ticket. My stylist, Steph, was lovely. She spent a long time talking to me about my hair, and was really accommodating as I'd just pulled my back earlier that day. She gave me a lumbar cushion to be more comfortable in the chair. She looked again at the pictures I'd sent and we talked about my concerns - how my hair was changing and how to cut to show it off at its best. We started conversing about common interests and before I knew it, my hair was transformed, better than I hoped it might turn out! The cut itself didn't take long and the time flew as we were chatting. I then had it washed and was sent back to Steph to have it styled, followed by sitting under the dryer and and then styled again with some products, as she explained in detail why she'd chosen them for me. At no point did she try and sell me any, which I so appreciate. I was there for a total of two hours, feeling very heard, welcomed, and taken seriously, and certainly felt I got my money's worth. I don't like to drink Kool Aid, and my experience at Cala Renee felt like an extended product pitch for Devacurl products. Being pitched these products would've been fine (since all salons pitch products) except the products didn't achieve what I wanted with my hair. That's a no go. I went into my appointment with a specific ask with pictures of the type of cut and style I was looking for; however, instead of listening to me and giving me what I asked for, the stylist was more interested in giving me what these products are supposed to do for my curls and converting me to the WAY. Frankly, I don't like that poodle-like, not really styled look. I respect myself and I haven't given up on my hair nor do I have no clue what to do with my curls. I just want my hair STYLED at the end of styling my hair. More importantly, she knew she wasn't doing what I asked or that she couldn't do what I was asking of her (which is unlikely because I can usually achieve what I want with my products at home, so why professional grade products can't do that would be unknown to me) because she seemed apologetic throughout the appointment. Nevertheless, she did neaten up my original cut and the cut was good... but not great. Nothing was a disaster regarding the Deva cut method, but she needed to take it further back on the left side. (I couldn't see that properly until I came home and re-did my hair.) So, I feel like I still need another trim... directly after an appointment. I am going back to my primary stylist after this experience. I stepped out to see if going to a "specialist" salon would be a better experience and see if there were tips that I didn't know that could improve my hair. It wasn't, and there weren't. My suggestion is to look at the stylist bios. I did, and I suspected the non-style, poodle-look might happen because of my stylist's hair choice in her photo... but some people are talented enough to see beyond their own choices to help you achieve your choices. However, that didn't happen for me. If you like that "look," then go to the salon. Join the cult. Find the way. read more

I've been going to Cala's salon for 3 yrs (maybe more) now for all my hair needs & I couldn't be happier. Never did I think I would find a place where the stylist would know what my hair needs before I knew. I currently see Ashley and I love her. She listens to my needs and gives me great feedback and I love her energy! I also love that the salon uses clean brands (lnnersense Organics) to gently but effectively give me the hair of my dreams! I look forward to seeing them all after all this and to having them help me get my hair back to tip top shape!!! I had specifically asked my stylist not to cut any hair off and just to teach me how to style my curls, but she cut almost 4 inches off my hair. I found this salon by doing a yelp search and it was perfect! I was having one of those days where you are unhappy with your hair and need to do something about it quickly. I called and they had availability! I love places that take walk-ins! I loved the personalized attention at this salon. I did not feel like I was being judged and my stylist sat down with me to get to know me first. I should mention that I had Erin, and she did a great job. She even told me after I left that if I was unhappy, she would do some maintenance on it. Another reviewer mentioned it, but this place specializes in curley hair. For over a year I loved this salon and the feeling of family among the ladies. It was totally worth the parking hassle! Sadly, when Erin left, they were all so weird about it that comfortable vibe went missing and I finally called it quits. Update: I finally hunted Erin down through her other clients and that's how I found out I that CRS ladies knew exactly where Erin went (see my other review) but lied about it to anyone asked - and that explains the weird vibe. What I don't like is being treated like money in their bank. Cala listened patiently to my curly hair sob story (as if she hasn't heard enough of them) and asked me what I wanted. She then not only cut my hair curl-by-curl but taught me how to condition, style, and care for my curls. I left the salon and smiled the whole way home. I went here on the recommendation of a friend and have kept coming back. The staff is very friendly, the place is bright and clean, and they offer you coffee or tea. They also seem very kid friendly. There were two little girls getting their hair done the last time I was there, and they were very relaxed with the staff. Erin (the stylist I see), listened to my ramblings on what I wanted and was happy to work with the photo references I brought even when I was like, "I like the bangs, but more this way not that, ya know?" Been coming to Cala Renee for about 2 1/2 years. Never really knew how to take care of my thin, curly hair before now. I always ended up frizzy at the end of the day. I also have been going gray since I was 18, and have never quite found the right shade and gray coverage. All that changed when I started coming here- they are all very knowledgeable and taught me how to take care of my hair well. Over a few visits my hair shape improved and my color transformed to match my eyes and skin tone much better. All due to wise choices by stylist. Now I am transitioning to gray and they know just how to walk me through it. I am so happy I found this salon. I loved my hair cut. I have coily curly hair and I got a great haircut. I will be taking my daughter who also has curly hair. I got tips for treating and styling my hair. I only took a 2 hr lunch break and it was not enough time for me to get everything done. Make sure go with ample time for your haircut/styling. I had my first ever deva cut by Mariah a couple of weeks ago. This was a big step for me since I've never - EVER given my curly hair a chance. SO I was pretty damn anxious about this appt since I've done everything to fight my curls from permanently straightening it, keratin and brazilian blow outs, heat styling the crap out of it and highlighting it. Ive been growing out my hair for a few months prepping for this appt to finally embrace my natural curls. Mariah took a few inches off as I requested and shaped my curls how she saw fit. During this process she was SUPER informative on how to take care of my curls and asked me questions on my current routine and my hair goals. I finally feel like I can handle this mane of mine. I've received SO many compliments on my curls. My own family thought I had a professional perm done LOL. I'm super happy with my natural curls thanks to Mariah and her curly hair teaching. 10/10 would recommend! read more

Let me start by saying that this salon is beautiful and relaxing, and the staff are some of the friendliest people I've ever interacted with! The experience is truly special! That being said, I was really disappointed with my haircut. It wasn't at all what I was hoping for: I asked for short layers that add volume, and my hair has actually been much flatter ever since the haircut. Additionally, my hair usually falls out in the shower much less after a haircut, but I've had no improvement with that since this haircut. In retrospect, I probably would've been better served had I just cut it myself--especially since I'm on a tight college student's budget. For anyone who chooses to go here, I would recommend 3 things: 1) Be very specific about what you want, and bring pictures. Doing that would probably saved me a lot of regret. 2) Request to not go under the hooded dryer, or at least have it on a low setting. I think this is a huge part of why my hair feels brittle and breaks more now. 3) Maybe splurge for the "senior stylist" option. It's more expensive, but is probably worth it. read more

I put off making an appointment here for a long time for two main reasons. First, prices are not listed on their website (I hate that!) so I assumed it was super expensive. Then I found out that a curly haircut was $65 and this seemed like a lot to me, especially since I'm rarely very impressed with any haircut. So, a year later, I finally decided to spring for a $65 haircut. Sarah did an AMAZING job cutting my hair! I was already using the Deva products so I figured there wasn't much to learn there. But Sarah showed me the right way to use them and now they work SO much better! I actually love my curly hair for the first time ever. I NEVER thought I'd be able to say that. So $65 for a haircut like that? Now that seems like a steal. I'd happily pay double that. I found out that a partial highlight was $85 which I think is very reasonable so I set up an appointment for that a few weeks later. Again, amazing job, exactly what I wanted. I told Sarah the issues I was having styling my hair at home and she showed me exactly what to do to solve them, and now I have no problem recreating lovely curls at home. A few other random things about this salon. It's street parking, which I usually hate but there were plenty of spots right in front of the salon and it's only a quarter for an hour on the meter. Everyone there was super nice and friendly, which was extremely refreshing because I feel like there is usually at least one super stuck up stylist or receptionist at every salon. But not here! I felt very comfortable the whole time. Also, both times I've been in I haven't had to wait at all, which is very nice. Overall, I can't imagine any reason to ever go to a different salon again. When I arrived I was told they could do the cut in the photo I provided, but then the stylist decided not to do it. Saying after the cut she did looked better on me without consulting me first. I was very disappointed. Will not return and will steer people to other curly salons. On a good note, they did get me hooked on DivaCurl products which I love. read more

I went to Cala Renee today and hard a great experience. My appointment was for a New client Curly Cut with Erin. As a salon owner and stylist with curly hair, I've always been interested to see what this curly hair dry cut was all about. First of all, the salon is a cozy neighborhood kind of place that felt comfortable. Erin talked to me about my hair, what I do with it and what I was looking for in my cut. then she let me know what she was going to do. After carefully snipping and shaping my curls, I went downstairs to get a great shampoo with lesson with Nikki. She gave a gret scalp scrub and massage while letting me know how to properly use the Deva products. After applying gel and a few clips for volume, Erin put me under the dryer for the hair to dry in its natural curl pattern, then snipped a bit more at the end. Was pleasantly surprised at the $65 price for such a thorough, educational service. I will be back to see Erin for my next cut! read more

I can't rave enough. The salon really is a curly hair heaven. I have been to other curly salon's in the area and LOVE the balance at Cala Renee. What I mean is: the atmosphere is relaxed and yet peppy and the staff were experts but friendly and active listeners. They actually listened! Sarah asked questions and then discussed how best to cut my hair with me. Sarah is awesome! We discussed how I could keep my long length but still work on the needed shaping to overcome some prior mishaps with scissors. Then...the cut was exactly what we discussed; no "trim" that is 3 inches off or layers I didn't anticipate. I left with my hair styled curly, how I would do it, AND loving it! Had our first experience with Cala Renee today. My husband (straight, fine hair) and myself (long, thick, and curly) both had cuts with Sarah, she is amazing! The salon is super cute, they make you feel right at home as soon as your arrive. This was my first haircut in almost two years, I had been deathly afraid to get a cut after years of bad experiences, but my split ends really needing tending to. Sarah took the time to discuss with both of us what we wanted, and she totally delivered. Neither of us have ever been happier with out haircuts and we'll be going to see Sarah exclusively from now on. I highly recommend Cala Renee, regardless of your hair type :) read more

I highly recommend NOT getting your hair colored here. They may be good at giving "diva cuts" but anything else is a no go. I told her I style my hair straight more often than leaving it curly. We decided against a diva cut, then she proceeded to do it anyway. The color came out HORRENDOUS. I showed her adorable pictures of some soft tones sort of balayaged in. She did the furthest thing from it. I paid $340 for that appt. I had to go back for a color fix. The stylist made me feel like a piece of crap and like I wasn't a priority at all. She wouldn't even blow dry my freaking hair so I could see the color. She sat me under the dryer because I was not leaving until I saw it dry. She was so rude I cried under the dryer. And then I left there in tears too. I ended up having to call and get my money refunded, but they wouldn't refund the cut too. Which wasn't the cut I even wanted, mind you. I had to go to a knowledgeable stylist after this and paid $650 to fix the mess she made!!!!!!!! Oh and she had to re-cut it as well because the stylist at Cala Renee couldn't even handle a simple cut. Please, if you like your hair DONT go here. read more

I have been a client of Sarah's at Cala Renee for about 8 years and would never go anywhere else! I have curly hair and have been using Devacurl products and having my hair cut with their "curl by curl" method since my first visit. They have helped me to love my curls and know how to properly care for them. My color is always fantastic as well.
