Really odd pricing. This establishment advertises $10 men's haircuts (was in with my husband) with terms and conditions. Apparently the $10 is for just the sides and it's $24 to cut the top too, so it's really $24 for a full haircut, without wash. The advertisement is intentionally misleading to bring people into the store. I've been to many hair salons and barber shops and I've never seen prices advertised this way. read more

Came by for a haircut the other day due to the great reviews on Yelp and was surprised by cunning and trickery of the hair salon. There was signage outside the salon that a haircut was "$10 special today" which was interesting as the sign looked tired and was quite dusty. Walked upstairs and was buzzed into the salon where I was attempted to be upsold a shampoo. Requested for a cut only and the cut was fine, done in 10 minutes. There was no wait and the stylists were merely hanging out in the air conditioned salon overlooking Chinatown Flushing. Upon exiting, the receptionist said it would be $24. When I inquired on the $10 sign downstairs, the response was if it was my first time, as that was a first time price only, and not next time?!? There was enough English spoken collectively in this salon to establish that I wanted the same thing just shorter with my bangs in a particular style, and for them to handle two English-speaking customers, who respectively requested a narrow range of possible appointment times and who wanted very specific highlights. I ended up going to Fancy Wave and asking for Shirley. I didn't really have any specific style in mind but just wanted to cut off a few inches and also dye my hair. Shirley recommended for me to do highlights and kept raving that she does excellent highlights. I finally gave in and to my surprise it came out better than I expected. It also seems to have grown well so i would definitely recommend her for highlights. Keep in mind that they are cash only. Before my appointment, I had actually called ahead to ask if they accepted cash (since some businesses avoid cash due to COVID-19) and was told yes. So I brought some cash and my creditcard. After going through numerous barbers across the New York area, I can confidently say that Derrick is the best. I have been coming to him for years, now, for his consistency of top-quality service. I'm always quite picky and particular about my haircuts, but I can always count on this guy to go above and beyond my demands. He is insanely precise with his craft, and makes sure that everything is inch-perfect and exactly what you wanted before you leave. It's like the dude cares more about your hair and than yourself. I've honestly never gotten a fade anywhere else that has come close to Derrick's. I go to school out of state, so whenever I come home, this guy fixes up all the lines and details that other barbers always manage to screw up. I've been coming to fancy wave for about three to four years now. As long as Derrick is working here, I can say with confidence that I will not be going to a different shop. There are four main things I look for with barbers. Scissor skills, fade skills, a reasonable price and giving me the cut that I want. I will delve into this a bit further. Scissor skills are the most important because there are a LOT of barbers who are horrendous with scissors. Sometimes the hair is uneven and patchy. Derrick is a beast with scissors. He pays lots of attention to detail and makes sure everything is always even. I cannot stress how amazing this is. Fade skills - once again, Derrick is not slacking when he does the fade. They always come out beautifully, with no patches or unevenness. It's strange but I've noticed that when some barbers do a fade, the hair grows back unevenly. I have never had this problem when Derrick cuts my hair. The price of a haircut at fancy wave is another great thing. Forget an arm and a leg, you barely end up paying a toenail for what you get. Before Derrick, I usually paid anywhere from $35-$50 for a haircut. I've seen some salons charge $80 ($80!!!!!) for a men's haircut. Over here, haircuts are now $25 or $30. I forget the exact price because there was a minor price hike (rightfully so) after corona hit. Once again, THIRTY DOLLARS. So cheap. I was just kidding about scissor skills being the most important. The most important thing about a cut is getting the haircut you want. I've been to too many barbers where I end up getting a different cut than I wanted. To anyone who thinks this never happens, you will be surprised how often this happens. No matter how nice the cut, if it's not what you want, you don't get the same feeling of confidence. Derrick always listens to what you ask for. Besides the haircutting skills, I want to mention how chill of a person Derrick is. He's extremely friendly and nice to talk to. Derrick reached out to me regarding a hair correction and I went back on Friday shortly before New Years. I was hesitant, but honestly this experience was so so so much better than the last experience I had here. The process was lengthy. Shirley sat me down and ask me what I wanted and I explained I just wanted a solid, even brown color and how the first time I was here my hair ended up half black on top and brown on the bottom. Communication was awesome this time and everyone there was nice as usual. Shirley was very clear about what she was going to do with my hair and made sure it was what I wanted. She started by removing the previous hair color with bleach and was very careful about making sure it was applied only where it was needed. She then helped me pick a brown color that would match the bottom half of my hair. She took so much time making sure the color was applied evenly and would periodically check my hair to make sure everything was going as planned. To prevent my hair from being damaged she also took the extra step of applying gloss to my hair. At the end of the process, my hair looked and felt great. The color was a lovely brown and even throughout. The gloss treatment left my hair super soft. read more

My mom and I have been going to Shirley for years now, as she does an impeccable job every time, from simple trims to haircuts to dye jobs. She is always booked for days in advance, so that may say something. Whenever I do get lucky enough to make an appointment with her for "big" things such as dyeing my hair, she always gets the exact look that I envisioned or showed her. From highlights to complete color change to ombré to balayage, I've gone to her for all of it. She's undoubtedly verrrry knowledgeable in her work. ALSO, Shirley is very patient and kind and will not just do exactly as you ask, but will give you suggestions or ideas if you want. I've been struggling to find a place to get a good haircut for years (and still have no luck). I really wanted to like this place, but I couldn't bring myself to after seeing my haircut. The man who cut my hair was a really nice person and the staff there were overall very welcoming. However, my reference photo was mistaken as different style (I almost turned into Dora) and was only partially corrected. I have short hair (with side bangs) by the time I realized what was being done to my hair, it was already a bit to short. I'm not sure, but I felt like I was being rushed by the end of my haircut. Another customer had walked in and the person cutting my hair asked her to sit and wait. I didn't feel like I got the chance to thoroughly see the haircut. Turns out the next day... Honestly, I've grappled with the idea of writing one of my lengthy reviews for this place but I don't think I can make the words happen. There's only so many words that I could use to describe how amazing the staff here is. I have been coming to Fancy Wave for as long as I could remember and have had my hair cut by almost all their staff. Jojo and Shirley are definitely some of their standout stylists. I remember one of the reasons that I would go out of my way to get my haircut here, is that this is one of the few places in Flushing that would understand what I would want in a haircut. Plus they always make me look damn good when i walk out. It was only recently that, at a friend's recommendation that I made an appointment with Derrick. It quickly became apparent to me that Derrick was the driving force behind his family's salon. I've never seen someone so dedicated to the craft. Usually a cut with Derrick will take around 40 minutes including a wash and styling. He'll also help teach you how to style your hair, although I refuse to believe that it'll ever look the same when I do it. Was in a different area from my usual barber and in the search for a new one. The good reviews and photos of Fancy Wave brought me here. Everyone is nice. That's about the extent of the positive things I have to say about this place. Really got rushed into a chair before I got to tell them what I was there for. They sat me down with this nice lady. Told her exactly what I wanted, multiple times. 2 on the side, natural fade in the back, quarter inch off the top, thinned near the back top. Somehow this ended up with a bowl cut in the front (over two inches off). And as you can see, I somehow ended up with a square tape up in the back? Notice how the skin color is completely different than the rest? That's because my hair has literally never been cut there before. She kept going back to it to fix it until there was nothing left.. then squared it off. I had to defend her from "cleaning up" my sides.. which in her mind was another tape up from the side of my head to my beard? So glad I caught that shit. I'd literally pay to not have her touch my hair again. It's so bad not even a baseball cap can cover the back. It's not even STRAIGHT. There's absolutely no saving this cut as there is no hair left to shape it, I'm embarrassed to show my current barber what's going on. I look like I'm balding from both the front and the back at the exact same time. This is what I get for trying to get my hair cut in Flushing. In the end, perhaps it was my own fault. One star for a decent buzzcut. Honestly I can't see how anyone is even capable of doing this wrong. I'll start with the top reason for this low rating review. 1. Right at the storefront entrance, there is a picture with grown men's haircuts and next to it is a big sign that says $14. I walk up the stairs and soon find a more extensive sign that says $14-25. I'm thinking in my head that I'm literally just asking for a buzzcut i.e. #1 on sides and #2.5 on top. My hair is only a few inches before that. I just enjoy getting a simple trim despite people saying waste of money. My entire experience there was 15 minutes. 10 minutes wash and 5 minutes cut. At the end when the lady collecting money told me it was $20 I politely asked isn't it $14? She pointed at the picture on the top left corner of the store slightly covered by blinds (once you enter the shop look to your top left. It's placed in the most hidden spot completely opposite direction of where the barbers and washing stations are) and said it's $20. It was pretty much the same picture as the storefront but just with different grown men's hair designs. I showed her the picture at the storefront and said but it says $14 there. She said that's for kids. I said but the picture is of grown men.... She said you have look at the $14-$25 that's in the middle of the staircase and the $20 sign up here in the corner of the store at the edge of the window. I've gotten hair, cut, and wash in other places for $10-$12. 2. The wash itself was subpar. The wash was no scalp massage it was literally just touching the hair with shampoo and conditioner. Literally you can try it and let me know if it's any different. At the end of the wash she suspended my head in the air for 10 seconds as she was debating with her coworker how they want their lunch delivered or picked up. 3. The cut was simple. Only complaint was he really pushes the razor against your head as he uses the other hand to hold back the force. It was 5 minutes ago I was like fine as long as it looks clean. After cut he immediately pointed me to the small table that's supposed to be their cash register and told me to pay there. I asked if I can get a quick rinse. He told me that that's an extra charge but I don't need it at all because he completely made sure I was clean of hair. After i left I walked around for a bit and there was hair falling on my face. I then patted my head and realized there was still so much hair there.... To owner if you do not believe any of my in store experience please look at the security footage if you have any. If you do not believe how misleading the store front sign and the one in the store is then please take a look at my picture of storefront and take a look at the $20 hidden photo in the salon itself. My friend recommened Eco at this hair salon and all my friends have been coming here for the past year for haircuts. We have always been happy (some ecstatic) about the results. You should call ahead for reservations as Eco is popular. He usually works Tuesdays-Sundays. I usually go on a Saturday. When I arrive, I wait about 20 min and read trashy magazines before getting my hair washed along with a nice head massage. Then I head over to Eco's chair. If you don't know what type of haircut you want, Eco is great at giving suggestions that will complement your head shape. I usually come with a friend and he does wonders on her hair, especially if it's a drastic change. He'll take his time cutting each strand with perfection and and gently blow drying and styling your hair so ever piece is in place. He's also very interesting if you strike a convo with him. I have had barbers in the past who were difficult to communicate with, were unprofessional, or just were not as skilled; as a result I was never satisfied with my haircuts and had to fix them myself at home. Wanted to try this place due to the high reviews here on yelp however was horrified after getting a haircut from Derrick. From the front, the haircut looked great. After finishing the haircut however, he never bothered to show me the back. I only realized how badly butchered the back was after I got back home. Derrick also decided to use a razor to cut a line to accentuate my part without asking me. I only realized that he was doing it after he already started everything so it was too late to stop him. To make things worse, he actually missed by part by almost a good inch. Unfortunately I did not take any photos of how bad everything was since I immediately went to another barber shop to have the mess cleaned up as much as possible.
