I walked in on a Saturday early evening and got seated immediately. It wasn't busy. I wanted a few inches cut off my layers in a v cut. The woman made sure it was even and straightened it for me. It took about 30 minutes and was $25. There was a bit of a language barrier, but I still liked the cut. read more

Sandy Eng Unisex - Medium length V cut with layers - Hair Salons Near Me - Elmhurst, New York

I've been getting my hair styled here for years. From cutting it short to getting it permed, I've done it all with Sandy. She's the only one I trust to do these adventurous changes. The salon is located on Queens Blvd so if you're driving, I'd advise you to allot some time for parking. When you walk inside, you're immediately welcomed by Sandy and her team. Start off with a hair wash--I highly recommend it!! I almost fall asleep every time LOL it feels so gooooood. Once you get to the chair, show your hairdresser reference pictures. I've found that this is the best way to confirm with your hairdresser what you really want (at any salon, really). I always leave this salon super satisfied with my hair ^_^ After years and years and years and years of searching, I've finally found "the one". I'll be coming back here for as long as Sandy's open! read more

I commonly a better experience. But I was in a rush and decided to allow someone else to cut my hair. This entire month I am going to be traveling so I was hoping to look great in the process of doing so. I don't have much time to cut my hair but I clearly should have waited because this was easily the worst case scenario. After showing the person who cut my hair the picture of the hair I wanted. Explained how I wanted a generic and simple two block cut and not to please not cut much off the top. I just wanted my bangs to be slightly above my eyebrows and pointed exactly where I wanted my bangs to be set on the left side. Please keep in mind I showed him a picture of how I wanted the haircut to look. These are key details before I proceed to roast and critique what he did because this had to be one of the most incompetent and negligent people I have seen touch a pair of scissors in my life. I've had this hair cut for more than 15 years. I've been to multiple salons throughout the years all over New York and Japan. I have a general idea of how most people start off this haircut. I'm not an expert, but he clearly had no idea how to start this haircut off. In fact, I didn't even know he was going to start off with cutting from the top and my bangs at first. Typically they separate and move my bangs and start off with the sides to work on my undercut first. So as I assumed that's what was gonna happen. In fact- his coworker who sadly has someone in their chair at the time, ALWAYS DOES THIS FIRST. So the incompetence starts with him first but I digress. As I sat there, he just immediately started cutting the top portion. Not commonly how it goes let alone ever, he proceeds to cut way more than an inch off the top and my bangs are more than an inch cut from where I wanted it. The bangs vary from being cut 1 inch, to 3 inches. What's worse is that he didn't even recall where my bangs were set, so he assumed my bangs set on the right side but I came in with my bangs setting to the left. So he cut in a direction he wanted to instead of where I wanted it to. I look at him and then he looks back at my as my hair is flying everywhere, the shocked look on my face as well as his. He clearly realized he messed up and there was literally no turning back from this. He then continued to trim off the sides but the damage was already done. I literally did not want that much off the top. He asked me later if I wanted hair spray, but I declined because I wanted to look like the fucking clown that I was, with significantly less hair off than I wanted. It's a travesty and a fucking embarrassment. My bangs flying everywhere, if you can even call them bangs at this point. I will be wearing a hat for the next two months and I will never be coming back to this salon ever again. I feel bad because all the other workers have done good by me, but this was actually the one and only time I should have declined taking somebody new. The level of incompetence and low-IQ was astounding. Maybe I'm the idiot for believing someone can follow basic instructions for a basic haircut. This is the last time I ever let them touch my hair which is a shame. But I rather never risk this ever happening again. This was the worst haircut ever at the worst possible time and it's fucking pathetic. They ruined my entire month in the span of 10 minutes and that's impressive. Thanks read more

Came for a haircut no reservations allowed according to them. Sandy cut my hair and it was not what I asked for. I clearly showed her a video which she hardly looked at. It was long layers no bangs. She also did a blowout which enhanced the mature look. I said to cut a little off which means trim an inch and she proceeded to cut inches off the front and give me top heavy like side bangs. Super choppy cut. I could not believe what I was seeing when she showed me the results. It looked nothing like the video. The place was also super hot on a summer day. I was so embarrassed leaving the salon with the haircut and would never come back here. read more

Sandy and her team are the best! I've been coming to her for years. I always get my usual. Long layers with face framing layers and it looks great everytime. The hair wash station is my favorite part. They give a head massage and really deep clean your scalp. The blow out is my second favorite part. Sandy never fails to make me feel beautiful. I love her honesty when it comes to bleaching a because she really cares about hair health and that's really important! read more

I love how Sandy and Ling cut my hair. Sandy is my go to girl for bayalage and cuts and my mom always goes to Ling because she knows how to cut her hair short the way she like sit. (My mom is older woman so she gets the same cut all the time) They have a clean space and very personable. Their prices are also hard to beat. I moved to Yonkers but still come here for when it's time to do my hair. read more

I asked for a trim and she cut off a little more than I asked, which is forgivable as sadly, most stylists do the same. It was a straight forward, wash and cut. There was no small talk, which was akward at times. She also didn't have much to offer when I asked for advice on my hair. She didn't follow my instructions on one key feature of my cut (I'm fluent in Chinese, so I know she understood) and that's where I knocked stars off. The cost is what you'd expect from a Chinese salon, very reasonable but I probably wouldn't come here again unless I was in due need of a last minute cut, but only if it was a trim. read more

Loveeeee the scalp massages I get during the wash each time I come here. Been coming here for a few years now to get layers by Sandy and have left satisfied each time - especially for the price! When I didn't know any better, Linda cut my hair on my first visit and I was majorly disappointed. You can tell she wasn't as experienced and cuts were quite chunky. She does not know how to cut layers, so stay away! read more

Best haircuts and blow outs in all of queens perhaps the whole world. I've been here half a dozen times- had my hair cut by each stylist and they all impress me. Once I went somewhere else because they were closed (it was Chinese New Year) and I then went back to them to fix my haircut. Haha. I used to spend 50$+ and now I get a better cut and THE BEST blow outs for HALF. Now I've moved and I trek in from manhattan because Sandy is the greatest. read more

Got a haircut from Linda, and I asked for 2 inches off my medium hair with layers. Similar to what some of the other reviewers had with Linda, we didn't get layers instead it was more choppy. She pretty much cut my hair so that it's in two sections. I can easily section out which ones are much shorter than the others. I feel like I need to go get another haircut to fix up this one. Came here last Saturday and the met THE Sandy. She is really nice and sweet. I came to get my hair dyed and get a trim. She told her assistant what to prepare for my dye. The assistant did a great job covering every strand I've got. Next Sandy, ask first what length she should cut. She cuts my hair very well and used a flat iron to finish. She charged me $45 hair dye (the starting price) for my long hair and $10 for the hair cut. I am very happy with the result. She and her staff are great and they do not rush you as other people are waiting. read more

Worse Salon ever for hair dye. On the first visit they charged 150 just for a tip dye, I did not mind if only they did a good job. But after 6 hours of bleaching and horrible coloring. All I see was disappointment, the tip and my original hair color was separate, wasn't blended in. I had no choice but to go home because it was getting late. On the second visit I went hoping to get my hair fix they asked for 90 after I complained. It would've been much more. After another 5 hours of only bleaching my hair, my hair looked like a candy corn. 3 separate colors. They kinda blend it out in the end but the result was dissatisfied. Wasted nearly 300 for this ugly hair horrible service. Will never go again. read more

I agree with all the reviews about Linda. I asked for a different staff as recommended here but Linda pretended that she doesn't know those names. She cut my hair way shorter than I asked for. She kept giving reasons for it which didn't make sense. She was also pushing to shampoo and blow dry my hair when I told her I washed from home. She was also pushing me to purchase her shampoo which I had to repeatedly say no to. Price was cheap but I'd pick a different salon next time read more

Okay, let's start with my hair: curly, dry, tangly, over processed, etc. I remember the days I used to have beautiful curly hair but naturally, went through those rebellious teen years and took it out on my hair. I've been to numerous hair salons, varied different price ranges, hair stylists from different ethnic backgrounds, I've had numerous treatments, again, my hair has been around. I found this spot on Yelp and let me tell you, ever since I started coming here back in August, I will never go to another hair stylist. The lady that does my hair, Linda, and the girls who wash out the hair are amazing! My hair isn't the simplest to work with and I've always heard unprofessional complaints about how dry my hair is and how curly it is but these girls work swiftly with my hair and do a phenomenal job! I was feeling bold last summer and cut my hair a Halle Berry short with Linda and it was really a dramatic and gorgeous change. She has excellent cutting hands, my hair kept growing back very quickly. The next dramatic change I've done with Linda was changing my hair from a dark brown, almost black color to a Rihanna-red color, I don't know how she did it, but she did it! Okay so maybe I brought in my own hair dye but she did what others said couldn't be done. The girls are very delicate and detailed to the job they're doing. They're very clean and don't leave you with those messy hair dye stains. They also don't burn you when blowing out your hair, they're very careful with everything! The skills are awesome, and their prices are super cheap! I get my hair dyed, washed, and blown out for $25 (providing my own hair dye product), anywhere else is easily $75. So she not only leaves you happy about your change but also leaves your wallet full, so leave a nice big tip! read more

Second time visiting this salon - only came because it was close to home. Not sure who washed my hair but the lady was so rough and was yanking my hair throughout. When she was combing she was tugging so I told her to please be more gentle and she said it's because my hair is damaged?? I think it was Sandy who cut my hair. Showed her an inspo pic and she barely glanced at it for more than 2 seconds before proceeding. I asked for long layers and she cut it way too short and choppy. Also i pre called to ask for the price and when I went to pay they charged me $5 more because my hair was long even though I told them I had long hair over the phone. read more

I had my hair cut by Linda she did a great job! My hair was super long and she had to cut 10inches so I can donate it to Locks of Love. I remember that she was also the one who had my hair dried when I had my hair dyed months ago. The only reason why I am only giving 4 stars coz when Linda asked Sandra how much is the hair cut she said $30 while other patrons are being charge $15 only. I just feel like its not fair since I've been here before and I am planning to go back to have my hair dyed soon. It could have been a perfect experience and more tip for Linda if they didn't stif me with the price. read more

This review is long overdue considering I've gone to this salon at least 4 times. Every single time I am more than satisfied with the results. Sandy never ceases to amaze me and I love my hair after it's been touched by her magical hands. This place isn't like most overrated salons that overcharge you. They have extremely good prices and are reasonable. They really take the time to care for your hair and give you exactly what you ask for. I will now take you through my Sandy Eng salon journey through photos. Spring 2014 I got highlights and asked Sandy to lighten my base. Summer 2014 I went even lighter and asked her to make it look ombré-ish. (Not exactly ombré because it has gotten a bit played out.) Fall 2014 I got a hair cut and bangs and she fixed my color. Was still blond And finally Winter 2015 I wanted to keep my roots brown but asked her to lighten the bottom. She really out did herself this time. I had to write a yelp review. This place is amazing. You won't regret it!! Ask for Sandy (although I'm sure everyone else there is great.) read more

Aww yes so many nice reviews. My aunt frequents here all the time, even back when they were located on Broadway, Elmhurst, so the owner knows us very well. I always get my hair done by Sandy herself because she's so sweet and she keeps up with modern styles. My layers are always perfect. I've never had anyone cut my hair as delicately as she has. And she gives you a little head massage too~ The lady does not disappoint :') The other day I wanted to have a quick haircut and picked somewhere closer to my house, because a trip to sandy's is 1/2 hour away by car. I was pretty shocked hearing the price of a plain cut and style at this local salon-- whereas sandy's would have delivered more quality service at $15! So lesson learned, a haircut at Sandy's is definitely worth the trip. read more

I had been this Salon for two times because I used to live near by. Every time I went there, I had problems . First time, I went there the lady called Linda cut my hair. She cut my front hair so short which made me really terrible. Second time, I gave her a chance and went there again , the same lady Linda , I told her just made some layers and by the time my hair got longer it could help me look nicer. You know what she made is chop instead cut layers. That was a disaster. Beside, they charged me like $25 bucks for short hair. Plus tips I spend almost $30 bucks. PS. Only Cash Never go to this Salon again read more

I have been to this place more than 6 times already. I get my haircut and my hair colored here and I think they do a fantastic job. I have long hair and with a cut, color, wash, and blowdry, the cost usually comes out to be $75-$100. I never asked for the ladies' names that work there but the one with blonde hair and the one with red/black hair have cut my hair before and I love the outcome. HOWEVER, Read this before you let the new guy cut your hair!!! On Valentine's Day, I went in to get my hair dyed and cut. I noticed a new employee and the only man working there. They assigned him to trim my hair and well I wasn't too afraid because I wanted only an inch off. After the trim, my hair was curled and it looked nice that day... until I washed it. The layers looked so lazily cut and my bangs were too thick on the ends. I also realized my hair color was too brassy-looking. This meant I had to go back in today for a toner and another hair trim. I left the salon happy this time and was not charged for the toner. I don't know how well he cuts men's hair but speaking from my experience, I would not have him cut my hair again. read more

I had such a great experience here. For an affordable price I received luxurious and considerate service you would expect (but sometimes do not even find) at a Manhattan salon. I was happy to have a shampoo where my head laid flat on a cushion instead of dipped inside a bowl. Where my neck was covered so I didnt get wet at all. They really did a great job and the price was way cheaper than I thought. Definitely recommend.

I asked for a trim - "just three inches off the bottom". The stylist seemed to nod with understanding and even repeated my request. She ended up cutting 6-7 inches instead, as a lot of stylists (that I've encountered) do when sneaky business takes place behind that salon chair. The rest of the hair cut wasn't bad and she actually fulfilled my request for layers. Add another star for the lack of annoying small-talk. I'm not into telling strangers my life story. Overall it was a slightly OK haircut without frills, there was no wait when I went, and it didn't take forever. However, I would recommend someone request half the length they want removed for trims. I'm going back to doing my own hair though. read more

This was one of my favorite places to go for my haircut until recently I went in for a haircut and wasn't even given a chance to explain what I wanted done, I felt rushed with this hairdresser (there was only one other customer). I tried to explain to the hairdresser that I didn't want to thin out my hair so don't cut it as much on the bottom and I wanted my side bangs trimmed, not only are my side bangs noticeably different lengths, she left an awkward dentition on my hair. While getting the haircut I wasn't pleased but gave her a chance but it turned to be a HORRIBLE haircut. Im not satisfied but I tipped her anyway. p.s I only asked her ONCE for the mirror to check the back of my hair ( where the hair indentation is) and she got annoyed. read more

You get what you paid for. I just have to say it is really hard to mess up on my hair. It's fine and tame. My hair was super long and I had intended to get the hair cut for donation and then a very simple cut. I usually go to pricier salons, but I wanted to try this place after I saw some great reviews on Yelp for Sandy. I asked for a 10-11 inch cut. She cut off roughly 16-17 inches. Though she seemed nice, made small talk, she really rushed through the actual trimming, spent roughly 5 minutes on trimming it to the hairstyle I wanted which was really just a simple cut with a bit of layers as I even had pictures to show her. I didn't really bother to check thoroughly right after because it didn't look horrible from the front though MUCH SHORTER than I wanted and as I said my hair is hard to mess up. Lighting in here was very dim anyway. So I just paid, gave a good tip and left. Not until I got home did I realize that she gave me a very blunt cut and looked barely fixed. Uneven strands and ends are curling weird. I can even see the cuts she made from when she first cut off my hair. lt looks like I had cut my own hair straight across the back. I know my hair is easy to cut but there was no effort put at all. I didn't pay anyone to make a blunt cut across my hair. I know they only charge $10, but really?? Genuinely upset about the cut and how short it was. Avoid if you are cutting off long lengths for a significant change. I had to go fix this mess somewhere else. To be fair I gave 2 stars for the price. read more
