A customer asked an associate for an item and he just sounded disrespectful as if she was bothering him. The cashier that checked me out was too busy talking to the other cashier that she rang a couple items up twice and I had to stop her. There are six associates in the store and only one cashier was ringing until the customers started to complain.

This used to be WalMart on Gray Highway. I think they have the whole store area but cut down the…read moresize of it and use the rest for either storage or possibly a depot center for other Dollar Generals. If you are in a hurry, don't want to walk your legs off in the parking lot, just looking for a few things, stop here. The advantage is being able to park closer to the store and saving time in general through navigating it all and checking out. Great location, quick and easy to get in--especially if you just need one or two items to pick up for dinner. But, due to traffic, better to plan on making a right rather than a left. It has all or most of the items that would be found at a Dollar General at the same price with a good size food selection above what the average Dollar General has. I would venture to guess that their food department rivals the size some smaller grocery stores. Veggies do seems to be spotty, that is fresh to wilted and the price is going to be at par or above the Walmart across the street. Meats are going to be priced at or slightly above the going rate. They do have a good selection of frozen foods such as veggies and meats but you have to know your prices. Fresh meats are packaged and the going rate, I'd say, with most other stores. In fact, if it's a few cents higher, it's worth being able to park near the store, and get in and get out. What I don't like about this place are a few things that could be easily fixed. Heat. Turn it on! Last winter while it really wasn't as cold as it's been the last couple of days, it was cold in that store compared to other stores or even outside. I looked around for where they sell their thermometers and it was around 54F to 55F. That's just too cold to expect people to walk around and try to shop. I even asked an employee who was working there about it and she said it was cold for her. Turn the heat on! Money. One early Friday afternoon I was waiting inline and saw an employee come into the store with a gob of cash. Big stacks of bills with those bands on it that banks put around them, a couple of money bags and just walking in like he was carrying his lunch. Maybe on Friday they need extra change and money. But, put it in a briefcase or at least a bag to hide it. Someone seeing that might think what a great place for an armed robbery. If that guy wanted to be held up, that's fine with me but bullets fly far and fast. I certainly don't want to be an innocent bystander when a gun starts barking. The other major problem that needs to be addressed is the parking lot. There is no logical design that was employed here. If I didn't know better, I'd think that whoever designed this parking lot designed a lot of WalMart parking lots. The main problem is that gas station out front. People are trying to get out and you're trying to get in to either the gas station or the shopping center behind it. It's a guessing game whether you'll make it or not. Everyone gets in everyone else's way. Then when you leave, there's always someone trying to turn left that holds up a whole line of cars. I recommend taking a right to the tire place and exit there.

So, I called to ask what their terms for sales are only to have the phone ring and ring. Their sign at the door says they open at 10, but when I was there around 11, there was no one around! This happened a total of 3 times and on the 4th, I was lucky to catch them open. Not only were the gentlemen who run the store out (again), but the woman sitting at the desk was unhelpful and rude. I told her I had some things I wanted to put up for consignment, she just stared at me and said, "Yeah?" I asked for who I needed to speak with, and she told me that the "guys are out, they'll be back in an hour, come back then". When I asked her about no one coming around to open the store, no one answering phones, and my frustration that this was my fourth trip up here, she simply looked at me and said, "Sorry you feel that way." Really? That's how you treat potential business? Maybe my standards are too high... I was so angry, I just walked out. I'll give away my furniture before I take it to them. A consignment store would be awesome in Byron... if they can get their act together.

It's been here forever, it seems…read more It's a bit rundown but still has the manners that have disappeared form other larger, more modern stores. You will hear Mr. or Miss so and so mentioned as terms of respect for the more senior members of the staff. I'm just going to have to say it, much of their stuff is cheap quality but it's stuff that you'd likely want to buy. Granite stock pot. You used to see these years ago but good luck finding it any place else. Furnishings. Yeah, some interesting and often items not seen at other places but again, either you like it or you don't. Sometimes you'll go all over town looking for something and find it here. However, the store has gone downhill. Garden section is largely nothing but stuff you don' want. They used to have a video rental which is long gone. The clothes. Naw, last time I bought a shirt there, washed it once and the colors ran, so not going to go there. Nothing much in the electronics section worth mentioning. Checking out is like Walmart, you wait forever. But, like I said, you will see things here that you won't find easily anywhere else. I've also found the staff to be quite helpful, except for one of the bosses, a black guy who was playing overseer over a younger white employee. That doesn't go over well with me, not so much black pushing on white but anyone treating someone like that. Parking lot should have been repaved years ago. For some reason they put in a curb and it makes getting across to the other side a chore. We used to have a store called Zayre's. it's like a lot that but still in business. I think there's a loyal customer base that is dying off. They could improve by treating employees like human beings and maybe carrying a few products that are of a higher quality. Forget stocking garden and plant stuff. it's too little, too late and not worth the extra cost, time to cart it inside and waiting to pay for it. No one wants to buy a bag of dirt that you can pick up with one finger and costs $3 bucks plus. Update the parking lot: PAVE IT. The little shopping center that it's in has been in decline for years. Maybe if they put more effort into that to update and get businesses in there, it would draw more people in off the road. For the unusual thing, might be what you're looking for. I was looking for a cross to put on a grave and no where in town could I find anything like that but here. These are the things that they have that other stores may not. But, hey, treat your employees like people. Slaving days for blacks and whites are over. I did take notice of the white guy who was trying to load a purchase for me and the black supervisor sitting in a rocking chair waiting to chew him out because he took too long. That lost my business from that store. I don't care if someone's white, black or whatever, don't treat people like trash. And, especially, don't yell and degrade an employee in the public eye and ear shot. Hope the guy in the rocking chair gets to use it more often. He should be fired. Does this mean I'm saying Rose's the store is racist, no. I'm saying that black supervisor clearly was, in my opinion, and clearly enjoyed running down this poor guy who was white trying to do his best. I could see the joy in in his face and voice at being able to run down this guy. Not really a slick move. I'm sure it wasn't the first time that this black supervisor had tried to put him in his place. So, I'm saying that black supervisor is racist due to what I witnessed and that the white guy has a strong case against this supervisor who represented the store, meaning yeah, the store isn't racist but the supervisor in that case is and the whole store is liable. I hope he sues. I would gladly be a witness for this guy. If it were the other way around, that is, a white supervisor saying those things to a black employee that morning, it would have been a civil rights case by that afternoon. In this day and age, it doesn't matter on your race, you cannot get by with doing these things. Black lives matter, ok. White employees matter, black employees matter, all employees matter and should be treated like they're human beings and not fodder for a racist black dude who looked like he was on a first named basis with Jack Daniels. Sorry, but that's my opinion. If it were a white supervisor doing this to a black person, I'd be writing the same thing, if not more adamantly. This so called supervisor needs to be shown the door. He has opened himself and the whole chain to a major civil rights lawsuit and if it moves forward and bankrupts the whole company, he alone is to blame. Racism is a two-way street white against black and also black against white is possible and the norm.
