In both cases, the stores are large and shopping takes time--I know I'm committing an hour, but I'll walk out with everything I need. Grocery Outlet is not that. The store is smaller, and so is the selection--but it isn't boring. There are times when that is exactly the shopping experience I'm in the mood for. In and out, but with the chance to discover some things I wasn't looking for and save some money along the way. I've found good deals here on protein chips, dried fruit, pasta, cheese, milk, salad dressings and sometimes meat. The main issue with Grocery Outlet is you probably can't shop your full list here. You'll probably get through most of it, especially if you aren't particular about brands, but there are specifics you just won't find. For example, there are 1 or 2 brands of all-purpose flour, but no bread flour. As long as you know that going in, it's a fine shopping experience. Bonus points for how kind and friendly the employees are.

The company is based in West Virginia and have populated their near-by states with these stores. The clothing is really hit or miss. I've found some really great items here for 10 dollars or less, but you really have to sift through a lot of crap to find it. They have a great selection of sleep wear and lingerie as well as bras and underwear. The sizes however tend to be limited. Often I find something I really like it it ends up being a XXXL and I get sad and give up. I love coming here for their housewares section. I've populated my kitchen with glassware, hand towels, soap, cutting boards, and accessories that I found here for super cheap. It's the best place to go to look for something for your kitchen. If they don't have it, check back because their stock is always changing. Beware of this location's credit card system however. I was there today and the system was down. A lot of customers left not getting to buy what they had selected. Luckily I had cash. They really should have made an announcement to the people shopping to let them know before they spend an hour picking out stuff for no reason. Apparently this also was not the first time it went down.

The Dollar tree on Ridge is closer to me, but they seem to always be out of something I am looking for (once they were out of paper towels, wtf!). The Beechmont store however is so big, it is guaranteed you will find what you are looking for in mass quantity. The store gets heavy traffic, but it is never crowded and lines are not long. My gripe with the Ridge location is they will only have one counter open for checkout and a line going all the way down an aisle. This location, you can be sure to get in and out. I like Dollar Tree because I love candles. I am one of those people who buy candles and never burn them lol. But with Dollar Tree, since everything is only $1, I can burn yummy candles all I want, and save the good stuff (L'Occitane verbena or Diptyque baies) for special occasions (ie. never lol).

Prices have gone up quite a bit over time, but every once in a while you can still find a solid deal or a good brand if you're willing to dig. That said, I have found some great items here. I came across plenty of Longaberger pieces like in the photo, including baskets and an entire set of Longaberger pottery, which is now one of my favorite sets I own. There are also lots of small trinkets and random finds that can be fun to browse through. On the flip side, some of the pricing is honestly wild. Things like used candles being priced close to $10 really miss the mark for a thrift store. The clothing section is very large, and you could easily spend over an hour browsing it, but I would say almost nothing is under $5 anymore, even for basic or worn items. There are a few decent pieces here and there, like some skirts and sweaters I've picked up, but it's hit or miss. They also have a separate rack for name brand clothing that's priced higher, which kind of defeats the purpose of digging through the racks in the first place. Overall, this store has gone downhill quite a bit, but I still stop in occasionally to see if I get lucky. Not great, but sometimes worth a quick check.

That being said, perhaps this spot is less frequented because they seem to have things in stock that other locations are out of. That was my reason for coming here. I was looking for a specific seasonal decoration that the website said they had in stock. Unfortunately for some reason it wasn't available to order online for curbside. Despite that I was able to do a quick in and out during a quieter time of day. My coupon was not working and the manager was nice enough to make sure it applied to my order. If you're not familiar with Big Lots, it is a discount store, that offers many products from home furnishings, to decor, homegoods, food, cleaning supplies, pet supplies, and more. I find what they excel in is seasonal items. Make sure to watch for sales or coupons (obtained as a free rewards member) as that is the only time their prices are comparable. Full price items are not usually competitive.

I also got an Asian strainer for taking the seitan out of the boiling cooking liquid. It was like $2 or something. How much do those things normally cost? I don't know. $2 is pretty cheap, though. There was a glass pitcher for water, only $5. I didn't buy it because it's not too much for me to get up and refill my glass from the tap, but I thought about getting it. My brother spent $45 and got a curtain rod, curtains, and something else. I don't remember the other thing he bought, but it wasn't the plant stand, which he put back. Overall, I'd say selfie tank top for Harvey was the best thing I got. I can't wait to wash it and put it on him.
