Saw Bad Example. Funny show in cool underground location. No waiting in line and awesomely priced. Also LOVE that it was byob-more beer = funnier jokes. The dance interpretation of losing your iphone made me laugh my ass off. Only cons-the seats were gross and looked like stuff had been spilled all over them. The 10:30 show this past Saturday made a random trip to Austin pretty special. The improvisers were committed and collaborative and just really neat to watch. It was something different and for $5 and the option to bring your own drink, it was a solid experience even if it was last minute. It was a bit cold inside, the weather definitely not helping but perhaps the air conditioning was also on? I'd bring your jacket if you are cold sensitive. read more

I'm perplexed at how high the reviews are, the show we saw was horrible and nowhere near funny. No one was laughing, it felt so awkward and a few people left. I stayed to be nice and also because I was hopeful that something would be funny. I was wrong! I don't doubt that at least a few of their shows have been good but, who the hell came up with this script and let them perform it, FOR MONEY! Again perplexed! Have you ever wanted to bear hug the shit out of a group of people? I want to do that to The New Movement Austin. I have had the pleasure of performing and watching some amazing shows in this theater. The space is such a cool comedy theater. The awesome pictures out front, the green room off of the stage, the classroom in the back, and even the stage itself all made me grin from ear to ear when I first walked in. Of course I am huge fans of Chris and Tami, but the other people that make up this theater are amazing and welcoming as well. I felt like I had arrived at my very cool cousin's house and couldn't wait to start partying. Do yourself a gigantic favor and go see a performance of Handbomb, Opposites, Waterpark..heck they are all good! Ok, now the important parts: BYOB, amazing and cheap comedy shows, friendly magical people all over the place. When I first moved to Austin, I did some research into the improv scene in Austin. After trying out a couple of different theaters, I felt like I found my home at TNM (The New Movement) Austin. Not only do they teach improv really well, they promote a community of always accepting things, and never denying, also known as UBH (Ultimate Back Having). I am not sure if there is anything in the world as great as The New Movement Theatre. As I enter my twelfth year of performing improv, I feel sad only that The New Movement didn't exist sooner. The space is wonderful (I wish there was a theatre so intimate, well-lit, and conveniently located in New Orleans!), but as many reviewers have already written, it's the familial, supportive, comprehensive improv training and performances that make TNM stand out and shine. As soon as you walk in to the theatre, you inherit the exact weird family you always wished you had, and the camaraderie is instant. Chris and Tami believe in the most heartfelt and supportive improv I've ever experienced (this from someone whose traveled to Chicago and New York and Portland seeking great improv classes), and nothing about it is even a little bit elitist. Do I need to add that the performers who come up through the school are really, really funny? I normally debate whether I am going to wear an adult diaper to a show, since I will inevitably pee. And I do. Inevitably pee. Chris and Tami say that improv is a movement. They've made it happen here, and this budding community is soon to be the talk of the nation. I came here with my girlfriend on a Saturday night not knowing much about this venue. The place is underground and there is a little lounge to wait prior to seating. Most people ran out to 7-11 to pick up some drinks since its BYOB. Note: there was a $5 cover charge The stage and seating had a unique charm to it however the improv show was a big let down. It was mildly entertaining and was definitely amateurish. It seemed like college students just practicing improv more than anything. I was pretty tempted to walk out but my girlfriend seemed to enjoy bits and pieces of the show. Then again, she was drunker than I was. Final word: If you got a stash of your momma's booze, broke and got nothing to do - might as well drink here. Get some laughs or pass out in the corner. I'm sure both are acceptable. Those of you looking for a more cultured experience or have better taste.. look elsewhere. read more

I come up from New Orleans and perform at The New Movement on a regular basis. It's the most fun I have performing and watching other shows. The vibe in the place is special and the community of talented performers couldn't be more welcoming and cool. The audience is full and lively and the shows are top notch. New Movement contacted me, apologized and said they would be glad to honor the voucher even though it had expired. I had my first session of the sketch class last night, and it is fabulous. I love to laugh .. so a friend and I decided to give this place a try a couple of weeks ago and headed over with a Red Stripe sixer for the weekly Megaphone Improv show. They don't advertise BYOB, but no one told us to stop drinking. The space was nicer than I expected. Small, but we were able to get seats because we showed up a little early. The show itself was amateurish but funny. Painfully awkward at times, as some of the players were better than others. Everyone was very friendly and enthusiastic. Reminded me of the fun times I had hanging out with the drama nerds in high school. Definitely an interesting experience that I would recommend to any open minded individual looking for some FREE Wednesday night entertainment on the East Side. read more

What a fun place for a night out! Great intimate venue to see some improv, and really feel all up in the action. Had the privilege of experiencing some improv, sketch comedy in one night. Outside of what I had seen on TV, I didn't even know what improv was until I drove by The New Movement about 1.5 years ago. I decided to take a class and since then I have graduated from the conservatory and get to perform there regularly. It's been a crazy adventure, and I feel the only reason I was able to get through my anxiety and complete it was because of the kindness and support of the theatre. They strive to be there for each student as much as possible. Chris and Tami are two super talented performers, teachers and owners. This theater was my introduction to the world of Improv. The Theater provides a free class every Wednesday night at 7 pm introducing you to a couple of the basic tenets of Improv. Its a lot of fun and if you stick around they have 2 free shows that night. (8pm and 9:30pm). I have taken classes at this theater and another here in town. I have to say this one is a bit more for the person who wants to jump into the fire. The classes start off with a couple of warm up games but jump fairly quickly into scenework. Chris and Tami really promote the students to take the opportunity to play in their "shoot around" on Wednedays at 8 pm where anyone can play. If you want to take Improv classes that really let you get into scenework right away, then this is the place for you. read more

Just finished level 2 improv class. I haven't been on any stage since elementary school and I just had a ton of fun throughout all of my classes there. If you want a WELCOMING place to be creative and learn something new from talented and professional teachers, this is a great place. There is always a totally free intro class every Wednseday and there was no pressure to take classes at the free intro. The fact that it seemed that they were just happy that I was there (cheesy but true) made me want to sign up for class. If I could give this place ZERO stars I would...I went to a comedy show yesterday and my friends were interacting with the first comedian, just fun banter. WELL he did NOT like that and proceeded to have the staff kick my friends out. The staff was beyond outrageously rude when asking my friends to leave. Although I didn't personally get kicked out I left out of protest and demanded my money back. The second comedian was great I will admit but the first guy was just butt hurt he wasn't funny at all... I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN A YELP REVIEW and I am so upset by the way we were all treated, especially cause we knew the band. read more

I went on "graduation night," which basically means the 2nd half of the show is just silly awards and nonsense certificates given to people in the class. That's right, a class to teach people "how to be funny". You either have it or you don't, I don't think humor is something that can really be taught. Anyway, the whole time was just (seemingly) inside jokes that if you didn't know the person "graduating," then it left you feeling even more separated from the show. There was ZERO audience participation. The show just starts and no one knows what the hell is going on, they just jumped in and started doing things. It was very cringe worthy too. It's that feeling that makes you very uncomfortable because the people are not really that funny, there may be 1 or 2 that can make you smile here and there but for the most part, it is terrible and you just feel bad for them. That's exactly what it's like. Felt completely gypped about paying for a full show and the second half was just completely useless for those of us who had no idea about "graduation". Tried showing some out-of-towners a night in Austin and they wanted to go to a comedy club. It was a gigantic failure. Unlikely to go again. read more

Amazing theater/comedy community in Austin. Cheap or free shows 6 nights a week, lots of variety and special events. Look in to cheap improv classes if you are looking for a way to communicate with the world around you in new ways. Tip: Wednesday night "Megaphone Show" at 9:30PM is free all year and you get to see great improv + hear hilarious stories from local guests. Good also if you wanna just go with some friends, Mondays and Wednesdays are free, but honestly you'll wanna show up and support them almost every day of the week. Review of the Sweet Lightning show, 9/23 featuring Kady Rain as storyteller. I know improv is hard. Very hard. I think it's brave to get up there and be in front of a bunch of strangers, but this was awful comedy. I have been to improv shows in Boston, Toronto, Atlanta, and Chicago throughout the years and am a huge comedy fan. Therefore I dragged my two friends out to this show, after seeing reviews online raving "this will be great!" This was almost unbearable to watch. I really wanted them to win, and was rooting for every performer. One gentleman carried most of the show, while others floundered and instead of "yes, and" they were in constant conflict, causing frenetic deliveries, with awful segues. Worst of all, using a boring story to base their skit off of (i'm sure the cast members have better stories than this woman did). No audience interaction. Pass on this. read more

I am very confused why this place has such a high rating on Yelp. They must be rating themselves cause there is no other explanation. The "theater" was tiny and extremely musty. Like smelled of dirty hair. The folding laundry "improv". Not improv cause it was definitely rehearsed. Honestly, I felt like a was watching high schoolers at summer camp doing skits.
