We were able to bring outside food in, and we split a flight in their gorgeous tasting room. Prices were super reasonable and their grounds are absolutely stunning. I started researching various wineries and vineyards along the Monticello Wine Trail, because we had stayed at B&B in Charlottesville once a number of years ago. I settled on Afton Mountain Vineyards and I am SO glad we found it. We booked an overnight stay in one of their cabins. The very modern, well-appointed cabins can be rented even on weekdays when the winery itself is not open for tasting hours (we checked in yesterday, on a Wednesday). A sleepover at a winery! What a great thing to add to my summer adventures! The whole property is beautiful; very peaceful and serene. We enjoyed wine we had purchased earlier in the day on the back porch last evening and then coffee this morning. Our checkout time was 11:00 this morning, so we headed to the tasting room then. I wanted to try their Albarino wine. We purchased two glasses from a lovely employee in the tasting room, and sat outside for over an hour just soaking in the gorgeous scenery. They have thought of every amenity.

The grounds were gorgeous, and I could see myself spending a lot of time hearing nestled under the trees. The first thing we noticed is that instead of tasting at a long bar, we were invited to choose a table and be served by a member of staff. And, instead of a set tasting list, you can pick and choose what you want among the offerings to build your own (see photo). The Viognier was a stand out, very creamy and soft. I also enjoyed the red blends, especially the Springhouse Red. We will be back!

As it was a nice day, we bought some cheese and crackers and sat outside to enjoy our wine. My two favorites were the chardonnay '23, which was aged in steel and the cab franc '23. It's a pretty location, especially on a nice day. There's plenty of outdoor seating. They have a wide selection of wine to try. I'd recommend stopping in.

They are doing a great job of growing varietals that do well in central Virginia, Petit Manseng, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, etc. I tasted most of their white wines, and liked ALL of them, which is quite a surprise for this California boy. They are creating some really nice variations, like Petit Manseng (2024 vintage) that does not hit you over the head with pineapple, and has great balance. Their Pinot Gris had a strong fruit component and more complexity than most, good acid without making your mouth pucker. The Viognier is less performed and drier than most, with good body and balance. They serve charcuterie that is locally prepared, and have a large cheerfully tasting room with comfortable couches and fireplaces for the winter. It's air conditioned and very comfortable right now, with great views of the vineyards. This is a family owned vineyard, and Noel and his wife and son were all charming and knowledgable. Strongly recommended! Ask them about the horse track next door, and you will learn some local history and family background that is not well known in the area.

My favorite was the 2023 Norton. My husband's favorite was the 2023 Got Everything, a blend of several varietals. At first look from the parking lot, you'd think it was a tiny place. But once inside you feel how big it is. The upstairs has a cozy area with couches. The large nearly floor to ceiling windows face west to watch the sunset. You're also facing the barn with a large field and rolling hills. The horses and cows have plenty of acreage to roam. It's mid fall, but when the sun came out the large patio was warm enough to enjoy the outdoor seating. They had live music and a small bbq tent set up. Both were great. Definitely coming back again.

Tasting includes 6 wines (4 whites, 1 rose, 1 red) and sangria. 2019 Sparking White: dry 2018 Loving Cup White: dry blend and crisp 2019 Tellurian White: the description says oak aged, buttery and creamy but I only tasted a neutral flavor and none of those notes 2019 Cayuga White: semi-sweet, delicate and fruity - this was my favorite and got a bottle for $26 2019 Dudley Nose Rose: semi-dry and fruity 2019 Loving Cup Red: dry blend and silky Sangria: flavors were very muddled - I think it needed to be served colder The tasting was also served in cups and a tray made from sugarcane stalks and completely compostable. Two thumbs up for sustainability. Views were nice, super beautiful green grass and lots of outdoor seating on the patio and on the lawn. The only drawback was the staff wasn't very friendly.

Cherry-ish 15 Merlot: For some reason I got a tart finish, which is unusual for most merlots that I've tried 15 Cab Franc: Also nice; cherry-ish finish. 14 Tannat: Nice body, strong tannin.
