**1 Star -- Excessive Costs, Poor Transparency, and Misleading Communication**…read more
I visited Delaware Integrative Medicine for a consultation regarding testosterone replacement therapy. What should have been a straightforward appointment turned into an extremely frustrating and expensive experience.
Following my consultation, the practice ordered an extensive panel of laboratory tests through Labcorp. I subsequently received a bill for **$3,329.25**.
My issue isn't simply the cost. It's the lack of transparency and communication surrounding the services I was receiving.
During my appointment, I was not given a meaningful explanation of the financial implications of the laboratory testing. Insurance coverage, anticipated costs, and alternative testing arrangements were not discussed with me. I later obtained the laboratory requisition and discovered it was marked **"Bill Type: Patient,"** with no insurance information listed.
I had active health insurance at the time, but the practice never requested that information or discussed how the testing would be billed.
Additionally, I spent approximately **$800 on medications and supplements purchased directly from the practice**. After researching these products afterward, I found comparable options available elsewhere at substantially lower prices.
**What makes this particularly frustrating is that, through my subsequent research, I found other TRT practices advertising comparable consultations, laboratory testing, and treatment for less than $1,000 in total.** While the exact services and testing panels may differ, the difference compared with the more than $4,400 in charges associated with my DIM visit is staggering.
During a subsequent phone conversation with the office administrator, I was informed that the practice had an in-house laboratory testing option that could have been available had they known I was paying out of pocket. This option was never presented to me during my consultation.
Even more concerning was the inconsistency between the practice's verbal and written communications. During phone conversations, I was initially led to believe that the office would assist in addressing the laboratory charges, including potentially obtaining more reasonable pricing. However, subsequent written communications took a very different position, placing responsibility entirely on me and Labcorp while declining to meaningfully address my concerns.
**Being told one thing over the phone and receiving a substantially different response in writing left me feeling misled and raised serious concerns about the practice's transparency and business practices.**
Rather than acknowledging my concerns about how the testing was ordered and billed, the practice repeatedly emphasized that I had signed a general financial consent form and that laboratory charges were my responsibility. While I understand that patients have financial obligations, I do not believe a general consent form substitutes for clear communication about extensive testing, billing arrangements, and available alternatives.
Between the consultation, medications, supplements, and unexpected laboratory bill, this experience involved **more than $4,400 in total charges**.
Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Delaware Integrative Medicine. I strongly encourage prospective patients to obtain written pricing for all medications and supplements, request an itemized list of laboratory tests, verify how testing will be billed, and get any promises or financial arrangements in writing before proceeding.
