Had a lunch get together with family. We all got one of the specials they were having. The service was good. Very typical quaint diner. We got food in a timely manner. The food was sub par. The corned beef on Rueben looked very old and tasted like it. Everyone meaning five of us were displeased in our meals. Seems like everything was frozen Tasting. Then came the checks. I thought specials of the day meant cheaper. Every restaurant I've been in specials means a deal. Not here they just select random meals to highlight and charge full price. Happened upon this place on the way to a different food destination and glad we stopped. It's a small diner with about 10 counter seats about 6 tables inside as well as outdoor seating. They serve breakfast and lunch; we stopped for lunch. We had a group of 5 and were welcomed by a friendly staff and able to place our order within a few minutes of walking in. Amongst our food order was a burger, chicken sandwich, turkey club, fresh cut fries, onion rings, pickled beets and three bean salad. Our food averaged to about $15pp with drinks. Everyone really enjoyed their food. The fresh cut fries were seasoned, which you really dont come across in nys. They were tasty and I also dipped them in cholula to give them a little kick! I have eaten here three times since Ray Gilman sold it several years ago. The most recent was the best. The service is excellent, the prices are a little on the high side. Quantity and quality of my breakfast was fair to good. In my experience, they have cut the portions of the breakfast meats in half since it became Jan's Fairlee Diner. The first thing you notice about this diner is its cleanliness. Even though it is old, the place is spotlessly clean. The second thing you notice is there are a lot of locals dining here. Everyone seems to know the waitress and each other. The final thing I noticed was the lack of male employees. This diner appears to be owned and run by women. I ordered the eggs Benedict with kielbasa and a cup of coffee. It came with home fries. My wife ordered an omelette and coffee. The food arrived and we noticed the portion of home fries was small. The plates looked fairly empty. However, the taste was really good. The English muffins on my dish were so soft I didn't need a knife (that's a good thing). My wife said her breakfast was good. The Fairlee Diner is located in Fairlee, Vermont. We stopped here for breakfast on the way back to New York. The place was fairly busy for 9am and seems to be a local favourite. I ordered the the Jay's Eggs Benedict which is a typical eggs benny but with kielbasa sausage. The eggs benny starts with a split English muffin and is topped with a full sliced kielbasa sausage, two eggs and a very creamy hollandaise sauce. On the side, you get potatoes with or without onions. I really enjoyed my eggs benny. Not the best one I've had but I really appreciate the choices of meat. You can choose from Canadian bacon, regular bacon, kielbasa, and others. I particularly liked the kielbasa sausage and found it to be very juicy. I'm not a coffee person myself but my family did not like the coffee. Perhaps it was just an off morning. Overall, the Fairlee Diner is a nice local diner to grab breakfast at. We've eaten at this diner for the last 23 years, and it was always a highlight of our annual trip. But now after a change in ownership, we were deeply disappointed. In the past we've always enjoyed the blueberry pancakes with real maple syrup. This year the pancakes were thick and tough, which I would suspect is the result of using a cheap mix. Substitutions that were commonly allowed before now result in an up-charge to already expensive pancakes. An over-easy egg came out with the yolk broken, and was a mess. Syrup that used to be a golden, mild variety is now a dark amber, which may appeal to some people, but which is not our preference. Bacon had a lot of excess grease. But hey, now you can use a credit card as well as cash. Bottom line, this place has been a local institution for decades, producing consistently great food that satisfied both locals and tourists. The new owners are going to have to seriously improve their game, or that goodwill that people have for it will be lost. read more

I don't think I've ever been more impressed watching two line cooks than at the Fairlee diner. A 2x2 workspace and the amount of food they are able to crank out is unreal...all while never breaking a sweat or even using words to communicate. It's magic. So happy I did, just down the road was this little place. The staff was very friendly and the food was fresh, delicious and made with pride. You must try the locally made strawberry rhubarb pie, my husband's favorite. Yep... this is one of those gems you might pass by unless you grew up going to diners with your Dad:) Stopped in for breakfast while waiting for my daughter in a 4H meeting. I'm not allowed to hang with her because I'm embarrassing right now! So back to the review. Great little place. Very nice waitresses. The cooks will get into a conversation too. The coffee is amazing. Very smooth with a nice body. If you've had coffee in Europe, kinda like that, a lot of flavor with no bitterness. I had the Pub Steak and eggs w/ homefries (like you'd make at home), and grilled English muffin. Basic, so not a lot to say....just good food. This is such a great diner. Homemade pies and home cooked meals and homemade pies. Portions are good. Got the open faced turkey with mashed potatoes and it was excellent, I usually don't like gravy in a restaurant but theirs is really good. I guess you could say this diner is very quaint with inside and out dining and it got outstanding reviews.When I asked for a dish to be made low carb,the waitress said the cook would not make it . I thought it was very strange because they had the same ingredients from other selections avail on the menu .It was only scrambled eggs with a side of shaved steak ugh.They did have it with Benedict with sauce and English muffin I just wanted to remove a couple items .We also ordered French toast that was undercooked .The cooks came off like 2 grumbly older men who are set in there ways . I was in the area from CT. And came across this classic, old school, cozy diner. We were wishing for breakfast but they stopped serving at 11:00(no biggie) ended up going with the homemade corn chowder with bacon which was over the top delicious. Brother had the Chili which he devoured and we split the hand cut potato fries. Not realizing, there known for their dessert pies. I normally pass on dessert, but thankfully my hunch was correct.
