My 9 year old niece had her first art class here on Saturday. Because of our circumstances I had to…read morestay the two hours for the class. Although I stayed in the back I eavesdropped often to see how my niece was doing. Jocelynn is amazing with her young students. She engages with them in a way that they all seem to really enjoy; she jokes, she tells stories, she listens to them. In the middle of class she gives them a small break and does an art history lesson. I think it's wonderful that students get to see works of great artists. They talk about and discuss the work of the artist being discussed while eating a snack. She sells art supplies in her studio at a fraction of the price you'd get at the store, and she didn't push me to buy. As a matter of fact I really wanted to buy supplies and she told me to hold off until my niece was sure she wanted to stick with it and was comfortable. My niece had a good experience. Although she's an amazing self-taught artist Jocelynn taught her the correct way to use pencils and how that she should draw what she sees not what's in her head. There was a little bit of a back and forth with my niece insisting that she was doing it the right way but I'm telling you Jocelynn has the patience of Job. And I'm sure she's used to dealing with artists who are stuck in their ways (even if they are only 9 years old). But all in all she enjoyed the class. Jocelynn gave her individual attention (I don't know how but all of the students received one on one time with her). Watching and listening to Jocelynn and my niece in class confirmed that getting her into an art class is the right decision because it has to be easier to develop good habits as an artist now than later.

I've had the privilege of studying with Jocelynn for 4 years and have learned a great deal from her. She is an experienced oil artist and sculptor and uses her many talents to instruct students in a variety of mediums in every class. I began instruction with Jocelynn as an adult learner, kids out of the house, and my only experience was drawing with a No. 2 pencil. Jocelynn has taught me how to see, how to draw, to work with values, with dark and light. She has taught me color theory, and how to use it in a composition. I have learned to work in charcoal and chalk, oils, and pastel pencils. Jocelynn is very reasonably priced, making classes very accessible and enabling me to afford to take two and sometimes three two-hour class per week. My Studio LLC has been a real find for me! Along with glassblowing and other art classes there is some retail here as well. A small selection of vape items, a few cases with glass pipes, art, jewelry and beer glasses, all made by local artists. There is a bit of wall art, clothing and other things that don't quite fit into other categories. Lots to look at. I had a chance to speak with the glass artisan Devin who teaches the blowing classes. He is very passionate about his craft and I think would be a great teacher to learn from. He informed me that some people come with a specific product in mind that they'd like to learn how to make. While others just want to see what the experience is like and decide what to make as they learn more. Personally, I'd like to try to make a personalized beer goblet. But h can tailor the classes to whatever the student is looking to do. While there I had a chance to speak with one of the owners, Pat. He explained that pre Covid this was a spot where local artist people would come to hangout and talk, some of those people help run the shop and the art on display is their own. He's a super kind guy and I can see coming here just to shoot the breeze. I think a broader use of this shop is the glass classes. The shop's reemergence is still so fresh that the awning and signage haven't been placed just yet, but it's definitely worth a stop. Yes, they have lots of rustic, country home decor and gift items. That's their thing. There's a big fall-themed section with loads of stuffed pumpkins for display, among other autumn-related goods. But they also offer a cute jewelry, clothes, and consignment (all sales final) section. I couldn't resist purchasing a versatile clunky bracelet, and my mom treated herself to pre-birthday earrings and a bracelet that she tried on, loved, and forgot was on her arm until she walked up to the register! For the clothes, they're contemplating creating a dressing room area in a side corner. As of now, you can still try them on via their restroom in the back, which has a full-length mirror. I'm glad the Scarecrow Factory has resurfaced, and I'll certainly return in the future for gifts and reasonably priced jewelry. Best of luck in your new storefront!
