I know virtually nothing about jewelry, but I know about people. When I was searching for an engagement ring for my fiancée, I visited many jewelers. At pretty much every shop, big and small, I was reminded of how little I knew. Because of my lack of knowledge, I was being upsold at every opportunity. Even though I went into these places knowing what I was looking for (based on an image I had saved) and knew how much I was able to spend, I was told "we can't do that. Here, THIS is what you want." They clearly knew more than I did about what my girlfriend wanted. Needless to say, my mission to find the perfect ring was feeling hopeless. I was about to settle for something significantly less than perfect when I decided to try one more place, a small shop called Facets in Park Slope. Lenny immediately made me feel safe and confident. He saw a person about to make the most important decision of his life, not a potential sale. He wanted to know what my girlfriend was like, how we met, etc. He knew that in order to get the right ring for us, he had to know who we were. I showed him the picture I had and rather than dismiss it as the others had, he insisted that we would find a way to make it happen within my budget. He used various rings he had on hand to show me the kind of metal, the quality and size of the stones, and the style that he had in mind. He was going to custom build me THE RING! He listened to my ideas and made adjustments. Every couple of days he sent me the latest computer-generated images of the ring. He was on top of it and kept me in the loop the whole time. When the ring was finished, it was better than I ever could have hoped for. My fiancée loved it. How could she not? It was the exact ring she wanted. Like I said earlier. This place has a nice number of unique/vintage pieces which they will custom fit for you, along with a number of new/in-house designs. Talking mostly higher-end options here, insofar as quality (and price point). Gaby & Liz are impressive salespeople who speak a jewelry language far beyond mine - incredibly helpful in guiding this incredibly uninformed person to pick out an appropriate gift. FYI, I'd say the bulk of there in-store items are wedding/engagement related jewelry, but they do have a nice assortment of regular occasion jewelry. I brought in an heirloom engagement ring to be restored, and Gaby and Irina were incredibly helpful and accommodating. The old setting required quite a bit of repair work, the very old stone needed to be polished, and I had to have the ring back in 4 days. This is for their 9th Street location. Great wire wrapping class with Esther today. Small group so plenty of patient, encouraging, individual attention. So far, I've been in four times, all in the past month. Always flawless customer service from Esther, Jill and Irina. Friendly, knowledgeable, clear explanations. None of the condescension one encounters at some jewelery stores. My mother's rings were cleaned and my grandmother's opals were refurbished. Everything came out gorgeous and finished either on time or earlier than promised. The prices seemed fair and in any case these pieces are well-loved so price not a factor. Sometimes 100% positive reviews are not respected. Hey folks, some places are simply everything they should be! So for the skeptical (actually, usually, that's me), I put on my thinking cap and came up with a "negative". One time, several customers were already there when I walked in. It was busy. The folks that work here (Anita and Irina) have exquisite taste and are incredibly helpful. My ring felt a bit too snug after a fitting - they quickly fixed it and got it back to me in 2 days.
