Oh man this place is trouble! So many beautiful, unique and versatile items to see. If you are looking for the perfect piece to add to your home or backyard space this is the place to be. After spending an hour looking around I bought myself a cool ring and standout ornate metal planters for my garden. Also picked up a simple bar of soap that makes my entire bathroom smell amazing after a shower. Their artwork is so eccentric and elegant, it's difficult to choose what you want to take home. The shops are filled with amazing items for the home and oneself....totally couture'd so that you always always walk away with something in both hands. The ownership and staff are very friendly and no matter how many times ones goes in for a "pooch cookie"... to browse, there is always a friendly greeting. As I wandered down Atlantic Ave I saw a darling chalk board sign that read "we're not as expensive as we look." Clever way to get folks in the store, they got me. Unfortunately everything in the store was as {over}priced as I thought it would be. There were plenty of beautiful and unique treasures inside the store, I especially loved the variety of large metal letters but the price tags were a bit high. $90 for a picture frame? Blah. It was the scene from Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts as Vivian enters a shop on Rodeo Drive looking for a nice dress to wear. The sales ladies snub her because of her obvious lack of class and a distraught hookers pride is hurt. I'm no Julia Roberts and I'm not a hooker, but my experience at Collier West could be summed up using this classic movie scene. I wanted so much to like Collier West, as I've passed their fabulous display windows on a number of occasions. Finally I had a reason to go in and my first impression was that Urban Outfitters had grown up, married, and had children. Those that shop at UO now for housewares will eventually graduate on to Collier West. Now if that description confuses you or seems strange, let me just say that I love what they have to sell. Everything was delicate, pretty, clever and sophisticated. I was a grown up princess in a fairy tale dream, but the sales ladies made me feel like a bull in a china shop. The air was snooty and disinterested, silence befell them as I walked by. I wandered to the second floor to avoid their judgmental stares. Even if it was obvious that I couldn't afford anything they had to offer, they need not make me feel as if I didn't belong in their shop. Collier West makes me wish I had my own house so I could put tons of nail holes in the walls. I want to buy everything in this store - minus the antler chandeliers because they kind of freak me out, but all the other chandeliers are awesome. In fact, that's what Collier West is known for. They have the best, most unique lighting around. The chandeliers are pricey, with the smallest, least ornate costing about $900. But they're definitely conversation starters. Collier West has bedding, dishes, jewelry, lotions, stationary, and home accessories too. Everything has a vintage feel. Most of the pieces are androgynous. Some of the larger furniture pieces are made from reclaimed wood, which I find innately interesting. I really love the skeleton plate collection, which you can view in Michael U's photo. The owner, Suzi West, is the perfect representative of her store. I recently read a feature in The Dispatch about her. She actually lives in a very small apartment in the area but somehow manages to translate her style into the space without making it feel cramped. From the photos, I could tell it looked like an extension of the store. Collier West is an inspiring store. You seriously can't walk in there without feeling something. Collier West is ultra-rad, ultra-hip and ultra-expensive. It is a great source for unique home decor items and accessories. I never though I'd ever want a paper weight until I walked into Collier West. They have a display of cool, apparently handcrafted paper weights next to the door. Most of them were simply neat images under glass. Is that all it takes to win me over? Apparently. The store also has re-purposed furniture. Be careful, though; what might appear to be a piece of furniture is actually a fixture that's not for sale. They have an extensive display of unique, non-trite greeting cards on the back wall of the store. On the second floor, the shop stocks a variety of baby items -- trendy looking clothes and toys mostly. read more

Does Collier West have two sides? If that's true, I was on the side with the knicknacks and jewelry. It's a really fun store that I enjoy visiting after the nail salon (check out Ruchki da Nozhki). In my most recent visit the the employee there just seemed to be in a mood. If said employee were not present, I'd feel like I was in an eccentric but fab Aunty's attic. It's fun to see their home goods, quirky selection of goods, and dainty jewelry. I recently purchased a pair of gold earrings that I love (although I'm still wondering if I should have gotten silver). And my eye is now on a ring that I was on-the-fence about while purchasing the earrings. It's definitely a cute spot for a last minute gift (if you procrastinate like I do) that doesn't look last minute. They aren't as expensive as they look (as they literally do say), but they are a treat. So shop sparingly if you don't want to break the bank. read more

I'm not poor but I can't even afford to breath in this place. It gets two stars because the items they sell are neat but it's like Anthropologie on price-tag steroids (and despite my love for Anthropologie, I think even their prices are a bit crazy at times). I'm not saying their wares are poor quality but l have a hard time paying 100X what something is worth just because it's been dubbed "art." Lots of these aren't one-of-a-kind originals either. An Edison reproduction lightbulb on a wire labeled as a "chandelier" is $168 (the least expensive "chandelier" they offer). A replacement Edison style lightbulb is $20. Oh well, they're moving to NYC... outgrew our little cowtown, I suppose. I'm sure they'll fit in a little better there. read more

This store is kind of like restoration hardware but with a museum of natural history theme. My favorite part of the store is the back wall with an old hardware store's wooden storage unit full of tiny little drawers labeled screws, nails, etc. It kind of looks like the old card catalogue set of drawers from a small town library. The best part is that it is stuffed with the most beautiful and unique selection of cards I have ever seen. My favorite are the works of a local artist that use decoupage and glitter to create the face of card. They sell for $8 a card which seems pricey on the surface but not so much after I spent 20 minutes prior checking out $50 paper weights featuring drawings of grasshoppers. read more

I walked down High St. intending to stop by On Paper to pick up a couple of those coin sized pewter clovers that I keep buying and losing. I passed Collier West, as I have a hundred times, and on a whim made an about face and walked in. I was greeted by the owner, a tall woman who exudes intellect and style. She was a picture of the ideal European city shop owner, complete with large purse and small curly haired pup-on-leash. She left as I turned my focus to a collection of the most intriguing curiosities I've seen in one place for a very long time. At a glance, the shop seems almost supernatural. Like within every object there is another, more subtle meaning and history that extends far beyond what seems apparent. I was instantly drawn to the ceramic vases and cups, each imprinted with a single line drawing of an insect or snake- transforming creatures that would normally instill fear or annoyance into familiar and amiable designs. As I drew further into the shop I became more and more interested in what it had to offer. A small metal heart organ.... heavy and iron...a good paperweight, or perhaps a fist pack. Handblown cups imported from Europe, ornate and light as a feather. An ever present joining of nature and craft. It seemed somewhere on the outer reaches of tasteful sorcery. Not the tacky pagan pewter wizard variety, but rather the decor of forest nobility. Collier West is as much an art gallery as it is a gift shop. Go there and be inspired. read more

When I read this article in the New York Times Style Section (http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/03/ohio-player-collier-west/) I immediately put Collier West on my list of must sees at this latest Gallery Hop. I've passed it many a time, but now was as good a time as any to see what they had and my friends and I were impressed! This store has a unique smattering of new, old, repurposed, and indescribable. They had everything from vintage stamps to cards and notebooks decorated with vintage stamps, chandeliers to chandelier earrings, and the most dainty, lacy French Knickers that made me wish it was acceptable to run around the Short North in one's undies...Wait, it is the Short North, that just might be acceptable. The staff was friendly and helpful and indulged our addiction to sparkly things by opening the jewelry cases over and over again to let us try everything on. One even noticed that I was trying to carry a whole bunch of stuff (never come to Gallery Hop with a small bag) and offered to give me one of their bags to carry my stuff in (easier for me, exposure for them. Smart). Unfortunately, most everything was just too far out of my price range. But I will be back, and if nothing else, buying those French Knickers... read more

This is a cute little place, where one is always afraid to hit something or break something just by going around the shop with a slightly larger handbag. Ok, I am afraid to accidentally bump something off the shelves just by walking past. Loads of nick knacks. Loads of ueber-polished old (maybe newish-oldish) furniture. Although I'm a fan of looking at these items, I'm always skeptical of the prices. Decoration in this shop costs more than what I am prepared to spend on not very useful stuff that catches dust. Since when has the protocol of the " customer is always right" been converted to the customer is wrong? Or worse, the customer experiences the store owner hanging up on them because "times are hard as a store owner ( of non essential items, jewelry, antiques and cute "bits" for the home) due to the impact of COVID? This was my surprising and less than satisfying experience at Collier west when I brought in a necklace for repair that I had I purchased there a few months prior. After a few weeks the chain broke suddenly due to a weak connection between the gem and the chain. In the one or two times a piece of jewelry of mine has broken I have found that the store owner has been very helpful to facilitate a repair. I have never experienced a problem with returning for a repair.Therefore, I brought it back to the store where the store owners told me it could be fixed locally in bklyn rather than by the Designer/ jeweler herself In California. They offered this as a time and money saving gesture which would cost me 20.00 for shipping. It seemed like a fine idea to me. I looked forward to receiving my fixed necklace by mail. However, when I received the returned necklace it was not the necklace I had bought from them or that I had brought in for repair. I wrote to them and said it was the wrong necklace. Their response was to insist that it was my necklace and said I was wrong. To prove that it was not my necklace that they sent me I sent them an image of the broken necklace I had brought to them and that I had purchased at their store, an image of the same one they sold on their website and, an image of the necklace they sent me. These images showed that the chain was different on the one they sent to me. Nevertheless, the owners insisted that I was wrong and that the necklace they sent back to me was my necklace and furthermore, that it was not from their store. They treated me as though I was a crazy person trying to pull one over on them. They acknowledged a purchase of a necklace in their store on the day of purchase (though even the receipt she read to me on the phone was incorrect in the name of the gem) but she still insisted that I had brought them a different one to repair. I own quite a few high end jewelry designers' works. I also am an artist with many friends who are designers. I clearly know the art works that I own, sell, make and, purchase. They might have gone to the jewelry repair place where they sent it to double check on whether that repair place had given them the wrong necklace, or even apologized for any confusion and asked how this mistake could be rectified. That would have been professional and correct. Instead, the store owners made no concession that this might have been erroneously returned to me. The two owners insisted that I was wrong. And, to add insult to injury, the owner of the store hung up on me because she said that their business was doing badly due to COVID and she was very stressed. WTF? I would not recommend buying from a store who's behavior was not only offensive in their accusation that a customer is wrong but further to my amazement, they asked me for sympathy. She said their non essential item store was suffering because of the pandemic. I found this response appalling in light of how many people's lives are being severely affected by this pandemic, not to mention the subject of the protests happening down the street from them. Besides doubting my credibility as a customer, she had the audacity to hang up on me cause she was stressed that her precious non essential business is suffering. This whole experience with this store has been demoralizing. They are absolutely unprofessional and frankly, pathetic. Needless to say, there was no offer of apology. I am left with someone else's necklace , not the one I bought there ( which I liked) and a bitter taste in my mouth which made the "customer is wrong" pale in light of the ask for sympathy about their Covid afflicted business and hanging up on me. I kind of do to some degree in the sense that they do have really unique items that you can't find elsewhere. If you're independently wealthy and fill your wallet from the money tree in your back yard then you'll have no problem going on a shopping spree here. However, this hipster joint seemed to be looking down it's long nose at us the whole time. $1200 for a bunch of sticks spray painted white with cheap looking chandelier bulbs?! Um, no thanks. I like art and ecclectic things as much as the next person but it seemed more like a museum that people didn't encourage you to want to buy. Matter of fact, the guy behind the counter refused to acknowledge the three of us at all, like we weren't good enough to be in his store. Got news for ya bub, I could buy PLENTY there but between overinflated prices just because they can and cold attitudes from behind the counter (as noted by a previous reviewer), I'll take my business where it's appreciated thankyouverymuch. read more

I agree with the other reviewer (Michael U) in that more often than not you will find higher priced things but it is definitely worth a browse if you're looking for a unique gift item that doesn't appear to be mass-produced. I don't write a lot of reviews, but I simply HAD to write this one because I just had such a positive experience at this wonderful shop. I happened in today with the thought of finding a light fixture for my hallway, and one of the kind salesmen immediately (but not in a pushy way at all) asked if he could help me. I described what I needed as best I could, and he instantly figured out what I wanted and the fixture that would look perfect in the space. What's more, he offered to switch the crystals in the vintage fixture I liked with crystals that I liked better that were in another similar fixture, thereby making me the exact mini chandelier I wanted. And he did it quickly, on the spot and in time for me to get back to pick up my child from school. This is a great store with beautiful items and excellent sales staff. They need a new tagline. I live in the neighborhood, I regularly walk by the shop, and I often stop in and admire their inventory. Yes, they have beautiful, wonderful things, however their tagline "we are not as expensive as we look" is ridiculously untrue. I bought a vintage table from these guys a few days ago...like all vintage furniture, I noticed that this one had a lot of wear and imperfections, which gave it a character I really liked. About an hour after I bought it, I had just put it in my kitchen and I wanted to wipe it down. When I did, I noticed that the veneer on top was bubbled and cracked and starting to peel. That's a little more character than I want; for a table top to have pieces of veneer out of it will not only be ugly, but will be annoying for splinters, cleaning, etc. So I immediately sent an email to Collier explaining that I could not see it in that light but as soon as I got home I noticed it. I attached pictures to tell the story as well. In gentle words they told me that all sales are final and to piss off. I would have at least hoped for an offer for store credit or something but my honest feeling is that they knew this table was damaged and they wanted to get rid of it. As soon as I inquired about the table she immediately told me "it was 700 but if you want ill give it to you for 500 because we've had it a while." I guess being offered a discount before I even asked should have been a red flag. Anyway, I didn't appreciate their unwillingness to work with me on this. read more

LOvE this place for decor. All of the most interesting, beautiful and unique things in my home are from here. Their selection of decor is always changing and I love it. Today I bought an antique brass magnifying glass, letters for our front door that spell our name, a gorgeous table to go with my recliner, and a metal sign for my friend. I love them. This place is such a gem! They have a little bit of everything and it totally works. I always find a little treat for myself there -- they're jewelry is fun and the right price --and there is lots there to work toward. Shopping in this store makes you feel like you've just discovered some place -- and something -- really special. And their lighting selection is AMAZING. I first walked into Collier West two years ago and fell in love with the products they sell, every piece of merchandise they have is very unique and beautifully handcrafted, there is nothing like it in Columbus. I not only fell in love with the products they sell but the FABULOUS staff, including the owner and her faithful employees whom has bent over backwards to meet my needs and the needs of their other customers. Two years ago I fell in love with a local artist whom displays her art there, Erica DiPaolo who has met my expectations time and time again with her gorgeous hand crafted pieces of art known as "frivoloso's" (spelling?) I recommend this store to all of my friends and all of their friends, I am always so pleased every time i venture in to this store, I have never been disappointed and will continue to sing the praises of Collier West.
