HG Flooring - Steps leading upstairs

They answered all texts and emails in a timely manner. 2. Patience - They answered all questions and explained the process to us. They were in no rush to finish the job. Their concern was doing it well. 3. Professional - This company showed up on time every day. They all appeared to enjoy their job as they smiled, laughed.....and I could hear them downstairs happily singing and enjoying each other's company. The employees were kind and explained every step to us. 4. Timeliness - Never late. In fact, they were always a little early. 5. Affordable - This is NOT a cheap process. Keep in mind that there is a lot of labor involved in refinishing a floor. It takes a hours to complete. And when you have the caliber of employees that they have, you've got to pay them well to keep them. And these guys are worth keeping. So no, it is not a cheap job. But I feel like I got more than my money's worth. I could go on and on about how much I recommend this company. Two of my neighbors inquired about their work. I told them I will let them check it out, so hopefully they will get even more business in my area. They deserve it.

Not only was HG flooring a great price, but their team did an excellent job with installation. We also had them repair/replace a section in our kitchen that had some water damage, and you cannot even see where they installed the new flooring. Everyone on the team was courteous, and highly skilled. I cannot say enough good things to say about them. I will certainly use them again for any future jobs.

Their price was high, but on par with other contractors. Burkholder's sales staff is very professional and their installer is very skilled. However, there were issues. When the installer cut out the old fiberglass shower enclosure, he did nothing to contain the dust. He did not hang plastic or use an air filtration system. Also, he did not have enough tarps to cover the entire floor, so roughly one third of the floor was not protected. Before the installer was about to grout the shower, I learned he was planning to grout the corners and other areas of a shower where dissimilar construction materials meet. Having done many home improvement projects over the years, I was fairly confident those areas should be caulked and not grouted. But I wanted to be certain, so I called the grout manufacturer, Laticrete. I spoke to two technical representatives (one used to work as a professional tile installer), and both advised against grouting those areas because the grout will crack. So, I told the installer to use color matched caulk instead of grout in those areas. He said Burkholder's has never had a problem with the grout cracking, but they would order the caulk that matches the grout. When I returned later to check on his progress, I noticed the entire shower was grouted. I asked him about that and he said the owner instructed him to grout the entire shower and caulk over those areas later. Applying caulk on top of grout is also wrong and something I confirmed with Laticrete. Grout is a porous surface, so there is a high likelihood the caulk will separate from the grout and mold will form under the caulk. I questioned the owner about this in a text and he wrote, "We always caulk after grouting, with no issues." Not true, according to the installer. They never caulk their tiled shower enclosures. The owner knew what he was doing was wrong, but did it anyway. I could have insisted that Burkholder's remove the grout and replace it with color matched caulk, but I was concerned they would do a poor job, just to make a point. So, I asked them to warranty the grout against cracking for 10 years. As expected, they would only agree to warranty the grout for 17 months. The normal warranty is 12 months. After the job was finished, I asked Burkholder's for their MHIC license number, and they could not produce one. In Maryland, unless you are a subcontractor performing work for an MHIC licensed contractor, you must have an MHIC license to do home improvements. That includes bathroom remodels and installing flooring, other than carpet. If you decide to use Burkholder's, make sure they are licensed to do the work you want them to perform. Also, know the law and insist they follow it. In Maryland, you can check the status of a home improvement contractor's license by going to: https://www.dllr.state.md.us/cgi-bin/ElectronicLicensing/OP_search/OP_search.cgi?calling_app=HIC::HIC_qselect

These guys came back to my house 6 times or more for install and cleanup that should have been done the first day. I do understand the demand during Covid and a family emergency, I sincerely do. This morning is the 2nd time they have been out (after me bugging them) to take all of the old rubber backing and staples off my stairs. They were here an hour and a half, and after they left, I STILL have about 50 staples that I can't get to, that DO have enough grip, so they could have if they saw them even with my contractors flashlight- so why, after 90 minutes of them being here and gone, am I, THE PAYING CUSTOMER, scraping old rubber backing off my wooden stairs and vacuuming it up, cleaning it, and finding many more missed staples???? If you like a company that makes you feel like they are doing you a favor by squeezing you in, and spreading the work out in 2 hour intervals, and sometimes not telling you they will not be showing up as scheduled before you drive across state lines to meet them, if you want a company you have stay on top of and still don't get quality work that you agreed on (except my star installer who finally came out alone---after 4 other guys came out in two-hour intervals because they didn't remove all the old backing or even clean the debris they left behind from the initial carpet removal)- so if you have time for these Shenanigans, then call them. Otherwise, don't waste your time. My real estate mother in law is very embarrassed for having referred me to them. She knows the dad, and there is still some old school customer service he has which is key to a great experience- He has it, the son has half of it, and the workers, although nice, can't seem to do a good job or take pride in their work enough to make sure the work is righteous. I am upset to have to write this as I continue to clean the rubber backing they somehow missed even with my spotlight bright enough to shine on the area.
