A yummy thing happened on the way to the Colosseum …read more.. Pane & Vino is a tiny sandwich shop near il Colosseo that specializes in local porchetta (stuffed pork loin) and is run by the friendliest owner of all time. He gets to know every customer on a first name basis. I'd go back more to see him than to have a sandwich. Seriously, he's pretty awesome. The menu is simple and focused on sandwiches featuring their famous porchetta so we tried two recommendations from the peppy proprietor. While waiting, I got a miniature bottle of Chardonnay and my spouse sipped a Coke Zero. The Traiano Porchetta sandwich (12€ - 4 stars) is an original creation of the out-going owner with a mighty Mustard-flavored blend of Roast Pork, Sun-dried Tomatoes, and Grilled Eggplant. I like mustard and, therefore, liked this specialty much more than my wife, but we ended up ignoring portions of the so-so bun. Pane & Vino Special Porchetta (12€ - 4 stars) was a huge sandwich with the sliced Roast Pork Porchetta plus Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Peppers, Mushrooms, Lettuce, and Mayo on classic Italian Pane. It needed more mayonnaise or a sprinkle of balsamic and olive oil for my tastes, but there was no denying it was a hearty hero. There are lots of pane bread and sandwich shops in Rome, but there is only one -- Pane & Vino -- run by the most welcoming of owners ever. If I'm in the neighborhood again, I'll be sure to stop in for a casual chat and some yummy porchetta sandwiches on the way to the Colosseum.

Great little shop with excellent service from the owner. I ordered the Traiano and the boyfriend…read moregot the Palatino. We shared the two and some Menabrea beer. Both sandwiches were delicious and the perfect bite after the coliseum! The owner was super friendly and helpful and even recommended a place for us to visit "the Roman Keyhole" - a great find and a well deserved five stars. Thanks again yelp!

I think this is the best meal I've had in Rome for years. The location's far flung: 10 km from the…read morecentre on my trusty Vespa, including a hair-raising bit of the Via Casilina. But we arrive at 1pm on the dot, in a quaint residential neighbourhood, just across the busy highway from Centocelle. Pro Loco Dol started out as a delicatessen on Via Domenico Panaroli about 8 years ago, with a specific aim in mind: to sell the best deli produce from all over the Lazio region. The shop developed a certain cachet for its exquisite cheeses and salamis, with top-class hams and other cold-cuts from the region making cynics sit up and re-evaluate Lazio produce. About two and a half years ago, they moved to bigger premises down the road, and added around 25 tables, introducing an imaginative menu which starts with cheeses and cold cuts, roams through wonderful hand-made pasta and thoughtful meat second courses, whilst also serving traditional and gourmet pizzas (pizzas only at night). We started with a selection of "Lazio rarities" to share, at €12. (The "ordinary" cheese and salami selection costs €8). 4 types of cheese and 4 hams / salamis, including prosciutto di Bassiano and a salami cured with orange peel. The cheeses, ranging from provola to a kind of gorgonzola, run from delicate to striking - superb. Then I order the ravioli filled with ricotta, tossed with fried artichokes in a carbonara sauce. It all comes together beautifully, and isn't overblown or filling - €12). My dining companion chooses the Dolpettone, house meatballs filled with cheese and served in a tomato sauce - €8). The €4 vegetable sides are a delight: white cabbage salad with apple and orange, and red Swiss chard fried with tomatoes. We share a "quartino" of wine (250 ml) and drink distilled water. We are offered miniature black cherry tarts on the house. Throughout the meal, we've been lucky: the restaurant hasn't been full, so the waiter has taken ample time to explain all the ingredients and answer all our questions about this marvellous place. The bill is a extremely reasonable €19 each. I'll be coming back one evening to try the pizzas - I only wish it was a little closer to home! What a treat.

Read about this gem in Travel and Leisure. Made our way there (30 minutes from the center in a…read moretaxi) and it was everything you could ask for and not a bit touristy. Highlights of the meal included the house red (organic "biological" wine; whatever that means), pecorino and a pizza bianco with potatoes and rosemary (don't judge; just eat). The food is all sourced locally (a big deal as Rome isn't known for farming). Our party of four got out of there stuffed to the gills for 70€. The only thing I felt was missing were outdoor tables. I just love sitting outside. And I'm a smoker. Go here. Call ahead and make a reservation. Don't worry if your Italian isn't perfecto as the owner has a good grasp on English. The menu is completely in Italian and it's as authentic as it's going to get. Absolutely amazing.
