When searching for a lunch in the tourist-trap known as the Vatican, it's hard to nail down a place that is both good flavor and good value. This sandwich shop knocks out both requirements, selling sandwiches filled with fresh deli meats and vegetables for a pretty low price. Tried the Porchetta(which was delicious and perfectly proportioned with meat to fat), a salmon based one, and one with chicken and artichokes. The vegetables, proteins, and cheeses were all very fresh and prepped to order.
Some complaints, the bread is thick cut and for a sandwich(especially in italy), I prefer something thinner, crispier, and overall more flavorful. Also while you can ask for anything additionally to be put in the sandwich, if you are unaware of what to get you may end up with a sandwich that is dryer and less flavorful than expected(as a lot of the sandwiches seem to be lacking a particularly savory 'fat' component like a sauce or spread to bind it together).
If you let the sandwich guy know beforehand to add some spreads to the bread, you can get a delicious lunch at a low price. At only 4 euro a sandwich(5 for their most popular ones), it's hard to do better in the Vatican(and in Rome in general). read more
