What used to be one of the greatest Italian food shops in the world (no kidding) has now been converted into a sort of a highly expensive appetizer bar with bistro tables. Nearly all of the gourmet food products have been removed, so this absolutely is not a place to go food shopping as there are far better places in Rome to shop for excellent cheese and meats. It is an absolute shame that this wonderful shop has been ruined. All the wonderful employees are gone. What were they thinking??? People from all over Rome and the world used to come here for the most prized food products from around Italy. Now, there is essentially no reason to come here. Shame!!!! read more

What an amazing deli/market. I have never seen the like! You can stop for a phenomenal sandwich with freshly sliced meat, cheese and bread for around five euros. Not to mention the high-end shopping. We had an amazing exploration of 5, 10 and 15 year old balsamic vinegars (10 being the best with meats and 15 - ice cream topping - sorry, not sorry) I can not say enough about this neighborhood deli but if you are here and you miss it....totally your loss! one of the best experiences I had in Italy. I entered this store and it was full of amazing food products...all sorts of meats, cheeses, calzones and what not. Locals were coming in, buying their stuff and leaving fast. It's a small store so we looked around but not speaking fluent Italian, I was a bit intimidated. Didn't want to bother anyone when they are so busy with their local customers. As I was about to leave, an older man called us over and asked us if we like to try some cheese and delicious pork....who can say no to that! Turns out it was the store's owner...the sweetest person I met in Rome! He introduced us to so many different types of cheeses and salami and the best prosciutto I've ever eaten. He was so sweet, he even packed a small picnic bag for us filled with cheese, bread and amazing salami (all free!) We ended up buying tons of gorgonzola and other cheeses and 6 bottles of brunello di montalcino (my favorite Italian wine!), the bottle that sells in LA for $75 is only 28 Euros here! They also carry an amazing Jam made out of apricots and Chianti that compliments the blue cheese perfectly! This is my favorite food store in Rome....come here for an incredible shopping experience, you will be amazed at the friendliness and generosity of the owner as well as the selection of wine, cheese and meat here. read more

This was one of the stops on the Eating Italy food tour. This is also home of the most buttery prosciutto I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. I had no idea what I've been missing out on until today and how garbage the other prosciutto I've been eating has been. I can't recommend this place enough. Location: Testaccio. The place: Much smaller than I expected but boy, do they pack a lot into the place. You'll find cheeses, prosciutto, salami, olive oil, balsamic (aged and not) - you name it, they have it. We are looking at top quality products as well. The goods: I tried the prosciutto di San Daniele, salame al Barolo, pecorino al tartufo and parmigiano reggiano. I don't know what to say except every single thing was delicious. To top it off, I got to do a little balsamic vinegar tasting to see the differences between the various age groups. The fellow who was there was super knowledgeable about the products and answered all our questions. Price: Very reasonable though these will depend on what you're buying. A bottle of aged balsamic for example, will cost you a lot more than a hunk of cheese. If you're a foodie, or you simply just like to eat, you have to check out this place. read more

Though I must say it is a great store, it is also very expensive. Before you fork out tons of cash, go check out Eataly (huge all italian supermarket -almost a city) first. They have almost all the same stuff but much cheaper. That being said. It was a pleasant experience checking out this tourist hotspot. (Dare I say tourist trap?) the guys there are very friendly and helpful and will vacuum seal your purchases. (I don't think Eataly will. ) read more

Inside Volpetti, it's like a rugby scrum with food. Elbows fly, people jostle and box out for position, but patience and persistence are rewarded. This is take-out, Italian style. I went back to the rental with a nice Barberesco, a pane grano, three cheeses: a Bel Paese, a Gorgonzola Dulce, and a Pannerone Lodigiano, a torta rustica stuffed with mortadella and peperoncino and a mystery cheese, a calzone stuffed with spinach, broccoli, proscuitto, and yet another mystery cheese, and finally a berry crostata for dessert. All were fantastic! We didn't save any money, but it was a great eat-in meal! read more

Awesome grocery in Testaccio. Tons of fresh meats, cheeses, baked goods, pizza, dried figs, sweets, rustic pies, olive oils, pasta, Greek yogurt, wines - you name it. The men working there are more then happy to share their knowledge of meats and cheeses with you. And they make the most divine sandwiches. My favorite was always melanzane, prosciutto, and mozzarella di bufala on any of their homemade breads. If you show some fluency in Italian, they seemed more inclined to help you out and give you free samples. I asked for a small mix of cheeses and probably walked out with 10 euros worth of free food. Why I love Volpetti; the Food!! This family owned deli and salami house is just outside the city circle. In a residential area. Inside the 3 sons have divided the shop into different options that all work together. The meats and cheeses are some of the best I had in Italy. The also had fresh truffles (black). The sandwiches are great and reasonable priced. But the wow factor is all the hams on the wall. I kept asking how they could sell all the meat!! They will let you taste the cheese also family made. If you make it to Italy, it's worthy of a cab ride, or you can walk. If your there, the pyramid across the street is a interesting side note. Actually a burial site of the past city leaders. We had so much fun shopping here! My husband loves cured meats and deli items. He found at least 10 thing he loved - they gave us samples of everything! Ended up with a loaf of bread, a few slices of wild game with herbs and seasonings and some hazelnut Toblerone. I took a slice of ham potato pizza - yum! Made for an excellent meal on the go. OH MY GOD! Wonderful. I purchased the best best best (!!!) proscuitto I've ever tasted at Volpetti, along with all sorts of other gorgeous treats on my last visit to Rome. And if I have my way I'll purchase more on my next trip. This little shop has been featured in several foodie magazines, and it deserves all the hype it is getting! The shop has a wide selection of meat and cheeses with some wine, bread, and a handful of delicious balsamic vinaigrettes. This was definitely the fanciest deli we visited in Italy. They have pretty much everything you can think of. The staff speak English and are uber helpful, giving advice, samples, etc. Keep in mind though that they are also basically salesmen. This store is a stop on some food tours, but we came by ourselves. This is basically a higher quality, higher price establishment. My wife really enjoyed it and spent a lot more here than on food anywhere else on our trip. read more

Do yourself a favor and get over to Volpetti. At first, it seemed daunting because it's full of Italians who take what they do so seriously (and rightfully so!) and we were just a couple of Americans who don't really know much about cured meats. But we asked for help from one of them women working there, and she was able to cut us up some awesome cheese and meat and deli items. When she rung us up, I was expecting to spend 50 euros and guess what I paid? 11 euros. It was insane. And so delicious. We took it and ate it in the park. Perfect. read more

Hands down the best store we visited in Rome - this was one of the stops on our Eating Italy tour and we were told that when the store opened 8-10 years ago it was the first of its kind. They carry hundreds of kinds of cheeses and cured meats, wine, balsamic, jams, preserves and spices. We sampled 8, 10 and 12 year old balsamics from Modena and pecorino and moscato. It was with a great deal of self control that I managed to walk away with only 1 bottle of balsamic. They bubble wrap wines and liquids and vacuum wrap cheeses. This is a must visit if you are a foodie visiting Rome. They also have a pizza store close by. read more

This was one of the most wonderful experiences we had in Rome! Alessandro helped us get everything we needed for a picnic - even uncorking the wine, slicing the meat, cheese, and bread, wrapping it all up for us in a cooler, and calling us a cab! Ah, Volpetti I think about you often. I live in NYC and the closest we have is DiPalo's on Grand Street. 1997 was my first time in Volpetti's. I'd done some research and came across a NYT article on Volpetti. I saved the article and as my husband, 2 friends & I perused the goodies in the cafeteria like shop next door to the main food store I had the article in my hand. We speak a little Italian and the man behind the counter asked me about he article. I told him what it was and a couple of minutes later a tall, handsome, well dressed man approached our table. He introduced himself as a Volpetti grandson, pulled up a chair & sat down with us. He asked if he might take the NYT article and make a copy. I, of course, said yes. He went away and returned a few minutes later with the article and a tray full of oils, cheeses and other goodies. He sat with us told us about each of the items he had brought us, at no charge, to sample. We were wowed! Americans who certainly were not 'regular' customers why would they treat us so grandly. Ever since, every time we are in Roma we always stop in to eat & then load up on the outrageously delicious goodies in the food store. I will always smile every time I think of Volpetti's. Go across the Tiber to Testaccio. You won't be disappointed. read more
