I usually avoid social media darlings like Panificio Bonci. Heralded everywhere on the Internet, these places are listed in every blog, especially by lazy bloggers, who just copy information they read on other blogs. That makes me sick! It used to be called plagiarism. In season, or in good weather, the favorites of social media have long lines of tourists, taking photos and acting like ferrets at feeding time. Panificio Bonci had a short line on a chilly Wednesday in February, but the staff had that exhausted, snippy attitude honed by having to accommodate too many English-speaking tourists. They were not about to answer any questions about their bread, so they grabbed the first one behind them and threw it into a bag. We ordered two kinds of pizza, which received the same treatment as the bread. Back at our apartment, the bread tasted okay, not great, and the pizza wasn't very tasty. I took a few bites and threw the rest out. At my age, 75, and having eaten at some of the best places in the world, I need to use my own judgment when choosing where to eat. I know more than 99% of the folks online. Panificio Bonci is resting on past laurels, and I would say, "Skip it." read more
