Awesome place to find a gift. Every possibly cookie, jam, jar of sauce, candy, and spice imaginable. I went crazy and bought a lot of gifts: a few beautiful tin's of candies and cookies, spices in beautiful ceramic painted bottles. They wouldn't wrap the spice jars individually, but four to a bubblewrap; even though I explained I was traveling. I was skeptical and apprehensive. However, they made it back to America so I guess I really can't complain! Also, they put my purchases in a very cool reusable bag. There is another one of these markets in the center of the city, but this one is better, bigger, and has more of a selection.

Dark chocolate blocks made of who knows what

Castroni sold us what they called "solid dark chocolate blocks" Unfortunately the dark chocolate was just a cover layer. Underneath is something colored in various shades of light brown. See attached picture.

I went in looking for Coffee. Came out with a bag full of goodies. Would go back to Rome just to shop in Castroni. Edge your way back to the espresso bar in the back.... So, to have an Italian espresso experience is not to linger, but to take one's caffeine in a quick and short knock back like you'd take a shot of whiskey. Like the locals. Squirm or wiggle yourself into the nearest opening. No looking left or right. You won't be long enough to make friends. And that's not the point. Place your order. No latte or flavored third wave fru fru here. The baristas look like hotel bar staff and the formality is quite charming. Order your espresso, it comes with a small spoon, sugar packet or cube (I forget which), and a little sweet tiny cookie/biscuit on the side. (You will need it). The expresso is meant to bring you back to life after a long day, or wake you up to jump start it. So take your medicine, pay your bow tied barista and go. But don't leave yet. Meander, fuel infused shopper..... This store is not just about coffee or candy...there are lots of gourmet food items from pasta to chips.

This store is gourmet heaven!!! There is a coffee shop located inside. Pay the ladies cash at the counter prior to ordering.

Good specialty market for those hard to find items whether you're trying your hand at cooking a authentic Italian meal in your Airbnb or if you're like me, you go out of your way to find places like this to stock your pantry back home. I saw 2 big sections of Gluten-free specialty items, Mexican ingredients, American staple items, amazing Argentinan cookies, and most importantly for me and the reason I came here the best dried spaghetti from Naples, Martelli. Which I've never found in the US or in any Rome city center shop. Only a 25 minute walk from the Pantheon and with it for this hard to find pasta.

when in Rome... go to Castroni, especially if you live in Italy and you want to cook foreign recipes. I think that this place gave Oscar Farinetti the idea for Eataly, because Castroni is like a mini-Eataly with a nice foreign ingredients section: they have quality items, like pastas, spices, wines, chocolate, pasta sauces, teas, etc and a nice foreign food display: Mexican (they have Maseca flour and all Costeña products, and they even sell tortilla presses!), American, Indian, Japanese, Greek, etc. - also sugar and gluten free products. No cold cuts or cheeses but a small bar with coffee and pastries (good to keep the husband in a good mood while I go nuts picking things from the shelves!) Prices are not as high as I was expecting, considering that most of the times I have to order stuff online and shipping is not cheap (oh, Castroni also has an online shop called MilleDelizie, have to try that one), but when in Rome, it's nice to go for a walk through Castroni's fancy isles - they even have my favorite pasta Cavalieri cheaper than in Milan! Minus one star though because expiry dates of some of the Mexican products were too close, so I couldn't bring home my 2.5 kg. Maseca flour, expiring in June... so check the dates before buying.

Castroni has restored a little bit of hope in me - maybe I can, one day, like coffee. Not being able to withstand the bitterness of a full-on espresso, I ordered the mochaccino for €1.80. The redeeming factor was the frothy milk and cinnamon on top... but still, not a bad drink.

Traditional grocery with caffe shop. Really nice shopping / sampling of local brands.

This is genuine traditional grocery with many Italian brands and wide range from Caffe, Jams, Pasta, drinks and excellent chocolate... Cafe Shop is inside, try to have caffe or some small snack on the bar like a locals.

Made the mistake of ordering a latte. As everyone recommends, go with espresso only. Best espresso so far in Rome.

Cool store with a bunch of products from all over the world. However, they need to get some more Spanish/Cuban products like Goya :)

One of the best shops in Rome. An high class grocery, with his own coffee brand. A must if you like this kind of shops.

As we were taking a seat, the tables nearly toppled over just from a gust of wind so for the remainder of our experience I was wary of whether or not the table would topple. The drinks were a bit pricey compared to the restaurants and bars next door but what really ruined the whole experience was the awful service. Most of the employees here treated us poorly except for the guy who ushered us in. Our waitress was impatient and the lady who worked the register was rolling her eyes at us when we asked if we could pay using our American Express card. She said we can but we felt bad at this point so we switched to paying with visa because apparently it's easier for her to take our payment if we used Visa. Drinks were okay but not justifiable for the price Overall, I can understand why the place was quite empty during the time I visited. If you value service and price to taste then I'd recommend elsewhere

Being my first time in Rome I immediately tried the lasagne and a glass of house red wine. Was not disappointed at all. Kids loved the Prosciutto pizza and we all shared some carbonara con speck, rosemary focaccia, and a charcuterie board. All of which were delicious. Would stop here again for a quick lunch.

Outdoor markets are my thing so whenever traveling abroad, I seek them out. It's so much fun to see…read morethe various types of fresh fruit and veggies available, many unique varieties. There was a type of radicchio I'd never seen before. And so many olives! But it's also challenging because you are limited in what and how much you can. It unless you are staying at a VRBO. Same with all of the olive oils, aged balsamic vinegars, pesto, jarred tomatoes, olives, regional pastas, meats and cheeses. OMG, I wanted it all! Since I love to cook and mostly cook Italian, it was pure torture! I did buy Parmigiana Reggiano aged 60 months because the taste and price was too good to pass up. But I didn't have room in my suitcase - weight wise - to buy the olive oil, aged balsamic and other food items I wanted. They had the typical tourist souvenirs like scarves, aprons, ceramic bowls, and a wonderful assortment of olive wood charcuterie boards and serving utensils. I collect them but didn't buy any because the prices were the same or higher than what I find at Trader Joe's or Marshall's! And again, too heavy to lug back to the states especially if they aren't unique or a fabulous price. There was even a stall selling a vegetable spiralizer like you see on late night tv commercials. He was demonstrating the plastic gadget and crowds were lined up watching. Cracked me up! Did you pick up any treasures while in a Rome? Yes, a plastic veggie spiralizer! Prices of many items were the same or higher than the shops. For example, a tiny bottle of 20 year old aged balsamic was $22 but $18 in a shop so know your prices and definitely try to barter. Mercato Campo de Fiori is located in a bustling area of the city so after shopping the market, you can stop in other shops and boutiques on all of the side streets. There are plenty of leather, clothing, jewelry, and stores selling ceramics and food products plus cafes and restaurants in abundance.

I was waiting for my laundry to finish up and decided to walk around this place (just wasting…read moretime). Great place to get fresh fruit/veggies, spices and great wines. There are also several vendors that make fresh squeezed juices that I highly recommend. This market is open everyday and it is always busy. There are restaurants surrounding this market as well, so from my perspective, it's an all day event.
