A friend and I ate dinner at Ezard the other night, located smack-bang in the middle of Flinders Lane, down a flight of stairs and into a somewhat uninspired restaurant. We were greeted by a very friendly and lovely waiter who led us to our table and thus began our wonderful service. Now before I go on, I hadn't known at the time of eating here that it was a two hat restaurant and when I did find out the next day I was admittedly a little surprised. The decor is okay but nothing special, very safe with dim lighting and a small candle-type light on each table. The service by each waiter was excellent so no complaints in that department. After ordering we were presented with a piece of bread and three accompanying salts and oil on the table. The szechuan salt was a personal favourite and went well with the bread. Our entree - the steamed spanner crab dumplings w/ salmon roe & coconut tom kha - came out quickly. The three crab dumplings were cooked well, however lacked any real flavour. The only flavour you could muster was from the coconut tom kha sauce in the bowl. Somewhat disappointing but we were hopeful our mains would be better. The crispy skin barramundi w/ caramelised eggplant, tomato & lime sambal in a yellow curry dressing was nice, and the fish was cooked perfectly. Our other dish, the pan fried sesame crusted John Dory w/ gnocchi, black rice paper & a chestnut custard was good. We were still a bit hungry as these are all quite small portions so we decided to order a dessert. We settled on the blood orange & vanilla parfait w/ black sesame crackers & white aero chocolate. The blood orange was delicious! This dish was the highlight of the night and was presented beautifully. Overall I'm not sure I would agree with Ezard being worthy of two hats, although the service is fantastic, the food and decor lets it down slightly. For the same price you'd spend here you may as well go to an abundance of the other great places Melbourne has to offer. Although I can completely accept that this restaurant is probably not to MY taste but I'm sure it is to others, hence the four star rating from me. read more

Somehow both tremendously complex without being over-labored. I will say the desserts, though lovely, fell somewhat short of the pure genius of the rest of the menu, but were still lovely and an A+ against any other menu. Put simply the most amazing degustation experience and menu I've experienced in Melbourne. Dishes got better and better as the night progressed. Highlights were the coconut grilled ocean trout (with asian gazpacho, heirloom tomatoes, creme fraiche, hot and sour salad), slow cooked bangalow pork belly (with apple pudding, fennel, white peach, calvados jus), and chinese style roast duck (with green chilli and oyster sauce dressing with coconut rice and asian greens). Wagyu beef is an alternative to the duck (for an additional $20) and is also amazing. Highly recommend the dessert share plate option too (even though it's an additional $15 pp), so you can sample 6 of the best. Great bread too, with different accompaniments to try (e.g. parmesan, rosemary and garlic infused oil and szechwan pepper). Topping off an amazing menu was fresh mint tea - not on their menu but requested by us and they came through with the goods, no questions asked... Speaking of service...it was truly amazing. We were greeted by each staff member on the way in and out, and treated well all night long. You'd be mad not to try Ezard just once...if not twice. read more

My wife and I dined here on our last night in Melbourne and weren't disappointed. Having experienced places such as The French Laundry and Joel Robuchon, we were used to the concept of chef's tasting menus. I will say that the portions of each of the 8 courses were generous, and after the dessert course we left very full indeed. The ingredients were fresh and the flavors original and unique. I can't say I would dine here again anytime soon--but that's not a bad thing at all. Rather, this is a meal that is best enjoyed only once in a great while, and we're glad we went! Sadly, the time has come for me to post a review after years of using Yelp's services to find good restaurants and I must start with a bad experience in an effort to help out other Yelpers. After fighting through the pathetic excuse of a booking system Ezard uses including selecting a date and time multiple times and getting a message that it's not available a second later, I got a reservation for Monday night at 8pm which was promptly confirmed via a phone call around noon that day. My cab was early and not much traffic so I get 15, no 18 min early to be exact and I'm greeted with a grin and a "you are quite early" phrase. A bit surprised I think to myself - I've been to restaurants that are quite stringent with their timing, one of them having me booked at 7:06 pm so maybe these guys are hardcore. I'm offered a drink in the lounge while I wait. I take a look at the tables and as expected there are at least 5 tables I can see that are empty. Sure, I sit down, look through the wine list and 10 min later the maître d shows up again to ask what I would like. Now I get uneasy - 10 min should have been my wait time for a table, not to tell you what my drink while I wait for my table would be. By the time my drink arrives two couples have walked in and were seated right away, a third couple walked in and clearly did not have their names on the list because the waitress could not find them and had to talk to the maître d while they waited with me. At 8:30 pm, after over 40 min of waiting for a table with a reservation and not a single person could be bothered to come over and even try to explain what is going on, I got up, left some money for my drink and walked out. Two other couples were seated right away in the mean time. I travel a lot and I've spent a fair amount of time at restaurants. This one being at the low end of the pricey range of establishments I could not have imagined I would not even get to the table. I don't mind waiting when it's because I was too lazy to get a reservation. I don't mind waiting 15-20 min even with a reservation when I can see that the restaurant is full and people are making their best to accommodate. But when I see lots of empty tables and I have a confirmed booking and I have to wait close to an hour then I feel people should know. I can only feel sorry for the chefs that slave in the kitchen and try to put something new out there and all of their work goes to waste because of incompetent supporting staff that won't even let you try it. They didn't even have a computer to keep track of their reservations and had to look trough a printed list, in the dark. Someone forgot to tell those guys we are in the 21st century. For me that rates as bad as having rats in the kitchen. Feel free to decide if you want to support such an establishment and whether you would risk a similar experience when you have a date or a loved one with you. read more

Thank goodness for the wonderful Yelp Gods that allowed us to go and locate restaurants that were nearby where we were staying! We were able to find this place which was rated high enough to show up as good eats and thankfully we did. The ambiance was perfect for the romantic night we were having, did I also mention we called 30 minutes prior to when we wanted to eat and they fit us in? The staff is quite friendly and as you watch them manoeuvre through the restaurant its like well oiled clockwork. They all move perfectly in and out of the tables like they are robots! The food, with Asian inspiration, is mouthwatering delicious. I couldn't believe how the gnocchi melted in my mouth or how the pork belly was that perfect tenderness that it fell apart and I was able to mix it in with my rice and the sauce to ensure that I got all the yummy spices. The desserts were beautifully displayed on the plates and the chocolate brownie I had was absolutely delicious! It had a touch of some coffee like ice cream and bananas shaped in balls. I couldn't pass up the dessert even if I tried. I can honestly say that the $104 a person we paid for the 3 course meal was definitely worth it, although the wines that they have on their wine list are quite expensive and getting something by the bottle might almost break the bank if you want something good! read more

I don't think I'll venture too far from Ezard anytime I want to splash out and use an excuse to celebrate another year older or a big accomplishment done. It can certainly be counted on for inventive fare that still hits the taste and even comfort marks. This time around we went with the 8 course tasting menu - me on original and my beau on vegetarian. The menu is seasonal but I was tickled to get to enjoy the crab dumplings again and was blown away with the barramundi and duck courses as well. They even got me to enjoy beets, which I usually universally avoid. The vegetarian tasting is fantastic, I sampled much of my partner's food and the gnocchi was the standout. We spent 3 hours grazing over the lovely food and enjoying a bit of champas and local wine. The service is excellent of course, if a bit soft spoken and subdued. Don't go to this place. I would give a 0 to this restaurant if 0 is available. It was the worst fine dining experience I've ever had. It was my girlfriend's birthday dinner. I told the restaurant to write a "happy birthday" message on the dessert plate when I made the reservation. However, NOTHING was prepared and the customer service was horrible. We ordered a 3-course Ala Carte, but it took more than 30 minutes for each course to arrive while people came in earlier than us were all served. The waitress had this "Whatever" face and didn't even bother to come to our desk when we waved for services. I told them they forgot the special occasion when I asked for the bill, the waitress just said "sorry the kitchen forgot". As a restaurant at this price level, you don't simply forget the customer's request when they made such request specifically. The food was okay, there are so many restaurants at the same price level can offer you a better customer service. read more

I'll keep it short, sharp, and shiny! Delicious food and most of the staff were lovely. Seating comfortable but we were all a bit too close to each other (other diners) - was hard not to get distracted with all the parallel conversations going on! One staff member rolled his eyes at us a few times and was a little patronising (my friend made a joke about the sake being "dangerous" to which the staff member seemed to take offence, when my friend was simply meaning she's a light weight when it comes to drinking!). When it's time for a really nice dinner, and you're prepared to lay down the credit card and not gasp when you see a bill for $100 or more per person, move Ezard right up to the top portion of your list of places to try. The ambience is simple, elegant, and welcoming. It's comfortable, not overly formal; the space isn't huge, so it gives the feeling of intimacy without being crowded. Noise levels back this up - conversation is easy to have, and you don't find yourself inadvertently eavesdropping on your neighbour's interactions. The food is, simply, beautiful. Asian inspired dishes put local ingredients front-and-centre - the dishes are clean, with great flavour combinations and balances. Wine matches are available - at least for the degustation menus - and are well worth the extra splurge. For starters, their Japanese oyster shooter is divine, and their seafood entrees are, in the whole, brilliant. The pork belly and hock are favourites by main course; the duck is great, but I tend to find the sauce a little overpowering. And accompanying the meal is good bread, with Ezard's signature olive oil - buy a bottle to take home, you won't regret it - and three different spice mixes to dip the olive-oil soaked bread into. My favourite is the sugar-and-chilli mix - sweet on the front of the palate, hot on the back. We tend to get the dessert tasting plate - 6 or 7 tastes of some truly incredible sweets. Great service, with good knowledge of the dishes and the wines that match with them. You'll need to book, but the planning ahead is well worth it. read more

I had a really nice business dinner - definitely on the fancier and more expensive side, but you'll get quality food, interesting flavors and textures, and a nice ambiance. If you like seafood, Asian fusion, and eating lots of small bites of food, you'll like this place. You'll have the option to do the degustation menu for $180 per person, or you can select dishes off the menu a la carte, which I would recommend doing. They will plate everything for each individual person, so it's almost like the tasting menu, only you get to pick your own dishes. Plus, it's always nice not having to figure out how to divide something the size of a golf ball into 3 equal pieces. The Starters are about the same size as the Mains, so just pick whatever you like from whichever category. We got 5 Starters and 1 Main and it was enough food for 3 people. Tuna Sashimi ($30) - The pieces of tuna sashimi almost got lost amongst everything else, the cubes were like 2 cm x 2 cm and we each got 3 or 4 of them. Tasty, but expensive for what it was. If you want sashimi, go to a Japanese restaurant instead. Steamed Crab Dumplings ($31) - I think we each got 1 dumpling, so that makes each dumpling $10 (yes, I can do math ;)) Great Thai flavor with the coconut tom kha broth and a nice crab filling (mashed up and solidified) inside the dumpling. Seared Scallops, Mango, Proscuitto ($32) - Another $10 per item dish (are you noticing a trend?)- the scallops were well prepared and flavorful and it was a great sweet & salty combination with the sweet mango and savory prosciutto. Potato Gnocchi with Manchego Cheese ($27) - Delicious - highly recommend this! The gnocchi just melts in your mouth, it's definitely homemade - we all thought this was one of the better dishes, and I wanted more after it was gone. Wagyu Beef Tartare ($30) - I don't normally eat raw beef because it grosses me out, but this was delicious and I'd definitely get it again. The crisp quail egg that it comes with it is perfect with a runny yolk - eat it all in one bite or the yolk will make a mess. Top the onion cracker with the beef tartare for heaven in each bite. Steamed Murray Cod ($48) - This comes with a Japanese plum wine dressing, and a little bit of vegetables - the skin on the fish was crispy, and the plum wine was a nice tart (but not too acidic) broth to complement the fish. This was a great meal with delicious flavors, nice plating, and 4 hours passed by without even realizing it. It was like we had done a 6-course tasting menu, picked by ourselves, with a slightly lower price tag. A fusion restaurant that is Asian focused, the dishes are small but flavorful. The ambiance is modern and upscale, and the service is impeccable without being overbearing. Uuuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh... I personally consider Ezard to be amongst the most collectively underrated restaurants Melbourne has. Whilst it's little brother Gingerboy gets much of the (unwarranted, in my humble opinion) hype, Ezard is the eponymous original and somehow stays reasonably under the radar. Sure, it's been showered in chef hats since 2007 or so, but it's not exactly the talk of the town. Ezard is however, completely exquisite. Focusing on fresh flavours and produce, the cuisine is probably best described as modern Australian with a heavily Asian influence (Ezard himself calls it Australian Freestyle). You're unlikely to get fried rice and spring rolls here, however. Definitely belonging in the splurge category when price is considered, Ezard is unlikely to be a weekly outing but for special occasions, you'll have a hard time topping it. read more

Well, well the famous Ezard. With a degustation menu for $180 you'd better pray to the pagan Gods or the federal reserve that either it's damn good meal or it's paid for with America's printed money. We had the express lunch which is set with no choice for $55. One alteration was made in our case which was to include the John Dory instead of the lamb main. I noticed all the things on the express menu were on the normal menu. I also ordered the $6 Japanese inspired oysters as an additional. The tuna sashimi was good, nothing special. As was the 'crab' wontons we couldn't taste any crab it was more like a fish cake inside there..not bad. The most surprising thing was that my main lamb was about 50grams of meat and no salad or lettuce or anything - I left feeling like a caveman on the hunter gatherer diet. I could have at least been informed and ordered a side? My wife's john Dory was cold and the potato purée tasted more like Coles mayonnaise than something from a fine restaurant. I also noticed the included glass of wine was about half the standard size so I had to order another. The wines were both excellent - and trust me I know about wine !!! · I ordered the spanish red by the glass. So now for an express lunch with a decent sized drop and salad we're talking $55+14+11 = $80. I hear in Cambodia wives are cheaper than that and they can probably cook the fish a damn sight better. Atmosphere is very nice as were the servers but for those of you that remember lynch's, la maddrague or the flower drum the food was top notch and more reasonably priced. This restaurant is certainly not in the league of Melbourne greats! read more

My absolute favourite restaurant in the whole of Melbourne. I discovered them one date night a number of years ago, and have now paid a number of visits. The award winning chef - Teage Ezard - knows what he is doing, especially when it comes to the wine-food pairings. Nestled away on Flinders Lane below the Adelphi Hotel, ezard is in the basement... but don't let that fool you for a second. Staff are amazing, atmosphere is cosy, yet modern. There's so much to love about ezard... I don't want to spoil it for you :) Is there a favourite? Probably the Chocolate Sphere as a desert... but it's so hard to choose! The wine list is extremely extensive, and the food can be delivered either a la carte, or via an extremely extensive - and worthwhile - degustation. The price is high; this is a fine dining experience. Be prepared to drop several hundred dollars per head for a full-paired degustation. That being said, you will not regret it. As. Good. As. It. Although I had visited Teage Ezard's second restaurant in Melbourne, Gingerboy, multiple times over the years, attending his flagship restaurant, Ezard, on Flinders Lane somehow eluded me until last week. Proceedings commenced at Gin Palace with their sublime Gin & Tonic #2's since Ezard was not expecting us until 9:00 PM. Although our intention of having the signature Ezard degustation option was announced to the restaurant when the booking was made, I was fearful that the experience would be amalgamated into a frenzy of activity and be over in the blink of an eye considering the start time. The restaurant however assured us that would not be the case and in fact that you can order the degustation menu up until 10:30 PM. That is impressive. We arrived early for our booking taking a chance that our table would be ready and we were not disappointed. The lovely lady who greeted us at the door turned out to be our server and led us to our table. It wasn't the best table in the house by far but I was happy to be seated away from the M1: the main thoroughfare of the restaurant that borders the bar and will also take you to the lavatories. Sparking water quickly arrived along with bread. I ordered a classic Gin & Tonic to begin with. Without looking at the menu, I announced to the server that we would be enjoying the (eight) course degustation option. She said that I should still review the menu but I indicated that I like to be surprised. The restaurant manager, Quentin wandered over to give salutations and greetings. We both recognised each other from the old Vue de Monde on Little Collins Street as he had the (dis)pleasure in those days of looking after my table on occasion. At that point, I knew that we were in good hands. One of the signature dishes, a Japanese inspired oyster shooter arrived in tandem with Quentin holding a bottle of 2012 Kirei Shuzo 'Karakuchi 80' Junmai Nama Genshu Sake from Hiroshima, Japan. I can certainly understand why this is considered a signature dish. An explosion of tastes ensued and when aptly paired with the Sake, not only did I have a new found respect for the restaurant but appreciated the way that the Sake did not overpower the shooter and the shooter in turn did not overpower the Sake. Most people believe that wine is best matched with raw bivalves but this is not the case. Sake in my humble opinion is the most natural and logical pair and it is very rare to find a degustation that will exploit this delicate balance for all it is worth. Citrus and vodka cured salmon, black quinoa, olive oil jam, smoked yoghurt, tangerine vinaigrette matched with a 2000 Pol Roger Brut was the next colourful delight to be presented to us. Simple but effective matching of the delicate seafood tastes with the champagne were highlighted by the enigmatic olive oil jam. What a mysterious and intriguing taste. Beside the oyster shooter, the taste of the jam is what left the greatest impression on my palate. The diner is also left to their own devices to add a variety of spices that languish on your table and this is the dish that is best enhanced by them. Whenever I am presented with spanner crab, I am a happy man. Fortunately for me, the third dish was a steamed spanner crab dumpling with Yarra Valley salmon roe. Spanner crab playing hide and seek in a dumpling was a novel approach that certainly worked. I am a bit biased when it comes to spanner crab as it is classically one of my favourite foods and the restaurant did not let me down. A salad of beetroot, asparagus and Jamon Serrano, parmesan custard and a black truffle vinaigrette was next. Beetroot is usually not suited for me and I have never had it with Jamon Serrano before. The result was a pleasant surprise. It just proves if you keep an open mind that you can find simple delights in food that you would not normally appreciate. At home I want to experiment with the beetroot and a Jamon Iberico now and see what that is like. I thought it was adventurous to pair the next dish, a pan roasted baby barramundi with carmelised eggplant, tomato and lime salad with yellow curry dressing and a Dolcetto. A 2010 G.D. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba. The onmnipresent floral smell certainly paired well with the baby barramundi and the wine never overpowered the fish, which was the first thing that I was concerned about when I saw the match unfold. Moving from a floral bouquet to a rich apple one followed with the slow cooked Bangalow pork belly with apple pudding, fennel, white peach and calvados jus. Just looking at the pork and you just know in theory that it should be bad for you - but the things that are supposedly bad for your health are so damn good. If the pork was any softer it would be emulsified. A very tasty dish that actually melted in my mouth. [Had to omit about 500 words for space reasons!] Ezard beguiled me however not in a deceptive way. It lived up to its good reputation and Quentin and the team looked after us well. read more

Modern ambience yet cozy and attentive staffs. I had crab dumplings as a appetizer which was delightful. My husband had cured swordfish he loved. We both had fish as a main course and snapper was well cooked and delicious. I had trout with Asian broth which was fantastic. So my husband had honeycomb ice cream with gingerbread which was nice but little underwhelming. I wanted to do 8 course degustation but my husband wanted al la cart which we do in regular basis in number of restaurants but this place wouldn't let us, that was little disappointing but I understood the chef had his process. Faultless food, faultless ambience and faultless service, sigh, just wish I could afford to eat here all the time. Definitely for that special date or for shmoozing clients. It was a freezing rainy night in Flinders Lane but the welcome was warm and our coats were quickly whisked away. After studying the carte we decide to opt out of the 8 course degustation menu. ( save that for another visit) My little entree was a complex salad of fig, asparagus, smoked ricotta, hazelnuts and air dried beef, absolutely delicious. My fellow diners also raved about their spiced quail, crab dumplings or swordfish. Mains were a little bigger, my whiting fillet was exceptional, just cooked, delicate and moist, dressed with roasted Jerusalem artichokes, cauliflower purée, lemon and sorrel sauce. This is modern Australian with an Asian twist and evolving to cater for new trends. There is a tie in with Levantine winery in the Yarra Valley and we tried the sav Blanc/ semillon at a reasonable $65 but if so inclined you can access the extensive wine list with some exotic wines and prices. It's so nice to go to such a professional well established restaurant and have a total great experience. read more

The atmosphere was wonderful. A tight squeeze with people real close to you but as the night continues and the food keeps flowing you go into a world of your own. Eight wonderful courses. The Kingfish was wonderful, the only reason it didn't get a full five was the waygu was not to my liking. The pork belly was incredible and the blue swimmer crab dumpling was to die for. A must stop if you're willing to spend the $150 for the eight courses. If not they have a minimum three course selection to choose from. A must stop for anyone. read more

Beautiful, beautiful experience. This is what fine dining is all about. Certainly, the best meal we have eaten in Melbourne and one of the finest meals we've eaten in the world - and we've eaten many. We went a la carte and each course was as good, if not better than the previous. We had the steamed scallop dumpling in the most amazing aged hon mirin dressing, the Ora salmon with braised daikon, Chinese-style duck with black rice, sides of creme Royale potatoes and beans with Persian fetta, dark chocolate sphere and glazed​ lemon tart, all topped with a Clare Valley Mt Horrocks Shiraz​. The only minus was the tart which is deconstructed - beautiful but I would have preferred it in its entirety. A fabulous night, not cheap but when you see and eat food like this, you are never disappointed. The service was courteous, prompt and efficient. Took clients to Ezard for a degustation event dinner. The waiter was very nice and some of the items were very good and others mediocre. During the third course of the dinner I looked over at my colleague and crawling up her white jacket towards her hair and neck was a very big cockroach. We managed to not make a scene in front of our guests and kill the cockroach. Throughout the evening we were on guard looking to make sure another roach did not suddenly appear. The waiter at the time of the incident disposed of the roach and said he would bring over the manager. That never happened. When we were paying the bill (extremely expensive) we had to ask to speak to the manager and when he appeared we discussed the roach we were told that they take these types of incidents very seriously. He continued to make excuses and did not even offer anything even though for those that saw the cockroach those dinners were ruined. He acted as if it was too bad and sorry it happened but tough. Eventually we asked for a discount and he reluctantly offer a $10 discount per person from a bill of over $300 per person. Fortunately for the clients that did not know what happened they had a very good time.
