I wouldn't characterize my eye exam as poor or dissatisfying in any way, but I am quite frankly a bit surprised at the number of 5-start Yelp reviews for this office. It isn't anything special, and the place is actually quite cramped, unorganized, and seems a bit unkempt. I was expecting much, much more overall, and from all this talk about the "special machine" so your eyes don't need to be dilated I thought I'd be seeing much more advanced opticians and office except the machine is actually something I first had done about 7 years ago. Alas, this place kind of seems like a "quick and dirty" eye doctor establishment, good to go to just get it over with and not worry about your experience and/or care. I used to go another eye doctor. I didn't like that doctor and the person prescribed me contacts lens that were too strong and uncomfortable to wear. With assistance from Yelp, I found this office and the experience has vastly improved. My doctor during my visits has been Dr. Chang. She's been great, informative, and switched me to lenses that have been much better for my eyes. I highly recommend this office. read more

I just realized that I have been recommending Dr. Lamalva for years, but I have never written a review. I have been going to her for 6 years, and so have many of my friends. She and her staff are always friendly and professional. I am basically so near sided I am blind, and have a stigmatism. She fits me with the best contact lenses, and the process is always fast and painless. She accepts most insurances, and has great office hours. I just had an appointment this afternoon... gee... Rosanna realized what was wrong with my eyes even before I brought it up!!! can it get any better? YES. She's got the latest technology. I'm lucky my insurance covers it. She's got that cool P2000 Device/optomap for retinal examination/imaging, which doesn't require the pupil dilation. It is used in primary level eye care for the screening of eye and non-eye diseases and disorders (she could tell I got no cancer, no diabetes, etc. yay!!), and with the V2 Vantage software you can see your eyes in her computer screen :-). A lady here took around 2 hours helping me pick out a pair of glasses I loved. She was so kind and helpful that I felt bad taking so long to decide. We tried on almost every pair in the store and she was not rushing me at all. Everyone in the office was so nice. When I first walked in, I was greeted politely and felt welcomed. My employer had gotten a great new vision plan and so I checked this place out since it was on the plan and I loved it. Well, as much as you can love an eye exam. Dr. Chang was helpful, pleasant and really explained well what she was doing and my options. And I love not having to get my pupils dilated since they have a special machine to do it - extra great bonus. read more

I've been a patient of Dr. LaMalva's for years and she is awesome. She is very thorough in her exams and has great "chairside" manner. I went in recently to update both my glasses and contacts prescription. The front desk staff was friendly and took care of all my insurance info. Once the exam was finished, Moe (the optician) was extremely helpful to me when picking out glasses, and all the staff were helpful in making the final selection (its good to have a few opinions!) Needed a routine eye exam and found this office through my insurance. All around great experience. Dr.Yip was very friendly and thorough. Mo helped me pick out new frames and was so much fun to work with (my pupils were still dilated so it made things a little more difficult and hilarious). I think part of the reason why I rarely write a review is because there are people that comment on you on your review rather than read the facts and just present their own facts. I would only say that if thinking about it logically, the fact that a person is no longer there actually confirms the facts. Misunderstandings on a customer's part normally does not result in the fact the employee is no longer there. This is an update as I've always thought there has to be a second chance. I would like to say that before I begin, I have nothing but praise for the Doctor's loyalty. In all this, I respect Dr. Lamalva. My wife's visit with her was in that part positive. As I stated, there has to be a second chance. I decided to return anonymously to the the office and see what happens. I discovered that there was a dark haired office manager in charge whom I notice is on this website as as an available picture about the office. I also met the other office person in the picture on another day. Both were friendly and polite. I inquired about how to have a prescription filled and was told the mechanics of it. So naturally I picked my frame and pulled out my prescription. I was using my wife's insurance so I expected everything to go smoothly and pleasantly. And it did which was nice. As I went through this, I made another discovery about my last visit long ago. The office manager took me over to have someone measure my pupil eye distance after I had picked my frame. (As I stood there and I later confirmed with my wife, that person from my previous long ago visit did not even take such a measurement but stated everything was set. Now we wonder how that person was going to process everything without it. Another mistake committed on that long ago visit.) I got a call days later when it was done and pickup was easy. Picked up my glasses and went over the other side to get adjustments. In the end, it was a solid A-ok experience. So its +1 star to 3 stars. And with such a positive change, I decided that later in the year I would return anonymously with my own insurance and redo the entire visit of an exam and glasses. read more

After having a not-so-great experience with another local eye doctors, my girl friend set me up with an appointment to see Dr. Chang since she used to work here. After being confused about my prescription, the cost and everything else I was hesitant, but trusted her with my life (or my eyes you could say). So I went.. And I am so extremely happy I did. Dr. Chang is absolutely amazing - she is so knowledge, patient, kind, and everything in-between. She gave me my eye exam and let me tell you, my original prescription was WAY off. Since the other office had confused me so much, she kindly and patiently answered ALL of my questions, explaining what was going on, what an astigmatism meant, why I was having trouble with the other prescription, etc. She set me up with the test goggles, and had me try a few different prescrips and finally found the right one. BOOM. My life literally changed - I could see clearly!!!! I just went back for my contacts fitting and again.. She answered all of my questions, no matter how stupid they were. She tried out a few different lenses to ensure we had the correct ones, and then I was on my way! I never felt rushed, or was shy about speaking up if I wasn't sure or if there was an issue with my lenses. This is definitely the place to go if you would like a relaxing appointment, where you can take your time. read more

The new Love of my Life How can the Eye Bar be the new love of my life? Because as I was walking on School Street yesterday, to grab some lunch, some construction debris flew into my eye. (And as a side note, while they are still ripping up School Street, I'd be careful of that.) I walked into Dr. Lamalva's office with tears streaming down my face, and in a lot of pain, and the staff was lovely, Dr. Lamalva took me right in. I had some deep corneal abrasions, which feels like being stabbed in the eye with glass every time your eye ball moves. So I was quite relieved to know there was nothing else still in there. I was an old patient of this store, but had not been in before to see Dr. Lamalva. And she's wonderful, very kind, and understanding to a person in pain. I couldn't have asked for better and I'm so glad I went there instead of the Emergency room where I would take my chances being seen by a hack. I'm glad to be going back, and the next day after the incident, with some antibiotics and rest. I am feeling much better, enough to write this review. I've been a patient here for several years, and cannot say enough good things about Dr. LaMalva. She and her staff are wonderful to deal with, and I love that they have new equipment that does not require me to get my eyes dilated during my yearly appointments. Dr. Lamalva does indeed have a super "chairside manner" - and she goes above and beyond when needed! There was a little mixup in terms of when her office was open due to some Easter/Good Friday related holidays, so they weren't open when I stopped by a few times to pick up my new contacts. I needed them fairly desperately because I was down to zero and was about to run the Boston Marathon - so I wanted to make sure I had at least one extra pair in case of emergency. I called Dr. Lamalva on her cell phone at about 4 on a Friday (they had closed early, unbeknownst to me) and although she was already on the Mass Pike, she turned around and drove back into the city so she could open the store and give me my lenses. So while I wasn't thrilled about the early office closings, Dr. Lamalva more than made up for that with her willingness to make sure I had my contacts. Definitely give her a try! I've been going for years and am completely happy with the service I've received and the quality of care. read more

This eye doctors' office is in an alley next to old city hall and looks a little run down, but don't let that fool you--the service is top notch. I've seen Dr. Chang several times now for vision checkups and contact lens fittings and found her to be personable and very thoughtful to patients' needs. Highly recommended! read more

Simply put, I had a great experience with Rosanna. She is very good about tracking your entire eye health versus "here is your prescription, see you in a year." Dr. Lamala WOULD get five stars, but I'm due to make an appointment for an eye exam and am considering switching because of her staff. I have been a patient there since the 90s, I hate to leave Dr. LaMalva, but that rude staff may make it worth switching. After my last eye exam, there was an issue with the way my prescription was written. When I called Dr. L's office, the receptionist said "Well...what do you want ME to do about it?" I was pretty taken aback by that, I told Dr. LaMalva, but I don't know if anything was done about it. Not sure if I want to make another appointment to find out. read more

I have seen Dr. Rosanna LaMalva for years, since I used to work Downtown. I've since moved my office to the Back Bay, but I go downtown to see her. Very warm and caring, and informative (you learn a lot from each visit) -- she takes the time to talk to you about what you're concerned about and to explain what she's doing and why. Deb, her receptionist is also a treasure, remembers your name and all the things that you talked about the last time in. When Rosanna has to be out of the office, Dr. Park fills in for her, and she is also very, very good. She took me through my first prescription for progressives. I am on VSP for optical insurance, and they take that, everything always taken care of without you having to ask. read more

Dr. Lamalva was okay, but her staff told me that the extra eye scan did not cost extra. It did, and they stuck me with the bill. When I complain and they told me to get lost. Eye scan was worthless, just a way to scare up extra cash. Steer clear of this office. They are about as honest as car mechanics. read more
