In October of 2025 I went to the Marianna store for an eye exam and looked for frames at that store, I didn't see anything that was fitting me just right, they suggested I go to the Dothan office that they had a larger selection. I went over and found a pair that I liked, sat with one of their SALESPEOPLE and was told that after insurance my TOTAL would be $400. I paid for the sunglasses and asked for them to be sent to the Marianna office because it was closer for me to pick up. I was sent or received a message a couple to a few weeks later that my sunglasses were ready for pick up. I went to the Marianna office and they told me they did not receive them they were still in the Dothan office, I was going away that weekend and wanted the new glasses so I drove to Dothan and picked them up. Fast forward a couple months I get a bill for $1100 for my glasses. Make a call to the Dothan office and they say it was never submitted to the insurance company and said they would submit it. Now 6 months later I get a bill for $92 for sales tax on the glasses that I paid $400 for. These guys play a lot of games with their billing and making the numbers look better than they are! I guess the first girl doesn't know how to add the tax to my "TOTAL" before the sale. The other people don't know how to add my insurance to the sale and the other people don't know how to ship the glasses to Marianna like I asked before they tell me they are there. March 9, 2026 In January 2025 and February 2025, I had cataract surgeries with lens implants. I have used Eye Center South previously and had no problems, in fact, I had a great experience. However, this time proved to be a different story: (1) I was misled in what the results of the lens implants should be (how well I would be able to see after the implants), (2) the review of past history, current tests, and results of the surgery were ignored, (3) there were not follow-ups at the office the day after each surgery, only a phone call from a staff member (4) the CRNA made rude comments just prior to surgery and the doctors made rude comments during follow-up visits, (5) there was a good size skin tear on the end of my nose when I awoke from the 2nd cataract/implant surgery-this was totally avoidable-there is NO reason for it other than being too aggressive in pulling the tape off, and (6) the price for lenses was $920/lens higher than what other local ophthalmologists charge. **The positive is that the nurses and receptionists were professional and helpful. read more

I visited Eye Center South in Dothan, Alabama, and was seen by Dr. Sebastian Heersink after being referred for a cornea tear that had already been confirmed by my optometrist. I expected professional, on-topic care for my eye issue, but was instead told I had 'dry eye' and offered a gel injection to keep my eyes moist. My concerns about the cornea tear were dismissed, leaving me without the answers or care I came for. At the end of the visit, Dr. Heersink stepped back into the room and made unsolicited comments about my weight, suggesting I would live longer and be happier if I were smaller. Dr Irene Ludwig came highly recommended to us by an accidental conversation with a front desk receptionist at a hair salon. She mentioned how Dr Ludwig helped her daughter's lazy eye and I of course explained that my daughter has this same problem. I put off scheduling an appointment for two years as we were already being seen BUT our upcoming move out of the state prompted me to schedule. Dr Ludwig is a "matter of fact" person which I appreciate. She was very clear in that my daughter needed surgery (after me seeing several other providers from the west coast to east coast never mentioned). After surgery we found out that her lazy eye was NOT genetic and had been possibly from falling as a baby she was able to fix the muscles in both eyes. So after 8 years of needless treatments from other providers we are so thankful for Dr Ludwig. My daughter is one week post op and her eyes have not deviated since. I've never had a worse experience with a doctor in my life. I was never able to get my very basic questions answered about surgical procedures he said were required for my eyesight and how they are conducted. Patients are expected to endure 3+ hours on a barrage of tests and sign up for surgery but God Forbid you ask the surgeon one question (and there is NO pre-op appt to do so). Dr. Bryant rushed me out the door and everyone I spoke with on the phone gave me a different answer. So, I made a 3 hour round trip one last time for an in-depth consultation. What a waste of time. He didn't answer a single one of my questions. Dr. Bryant was very condescending, unprofessional, and unethical in his defensive communication toward me. He needs to be investigated because God only knows how he treats his staff if this is how he treats his patients. Meanwhile, after each visit he has his scribes write that the patient has discussed things with the doctor in "great detail." This is a lie. Always trust your gut! As for the billing, this "puppy mill" operation is cashing in on their faulty systems by charging patients $75-$250 for cancellation and rescheduling fees. For example, if you get sick and call 2 days prior to reschedule your appt, expect to get hit with a $75 fee! Their portals are a mess and don't reflect accurate appts. You will not receive a timely reminder of your appt either. I've been waiting for over a month to hear back from a billing supervisor named Angela to correct an issue but she refuses to talk to me. After an eye surgeon in Mobile, Alabama screwed up my left eye, by putting in the wrong lens into that I, I went to see Dr. Sebastian Heersink at Eye Center, South. Doctor Heersink did an absolutely phenomenal job of fixing the left eye, and then doing the cataract surgery on the right eye. The surgery was flawless, the postoperative care was wonderful. I never met anyone at the practice who was anything but kind. They have a great team of professionals there. Anyone who tells you different, probably hasn't been there. read more

I was treated for pterygium in my right eye. I contacted the Center after my optometrist recommended I get the growth removed. My appointment was made at a convenient time and upon arrival I was greeted efficiently and seen by an examiner after a few minutes wait. Each examination prior to my surgery was conducted in rapid succession with minimal wait. The staff could not have been more courteous and friendly and informative about what they were doing. The anesthesiologist was efficient and effective and the procedure was painless. Dr Sebastian Heersink was personable and skillful and explained in detail the intricate surgical technique he used and my eye is now clear of the pterigium growth and my vision improved. I recommend Eye Center South heartily and will be scheduling soon similar procedure to remove the same condition in my left eye. read more

Took my dad to this place today.... The receptionist within this company was very rude. I wish I would have gotten her name. They scheduled a procedure at 7:30am but do not call you back for 30 to 40 minutes, which means you are sitting in the lobby for 30 minutes before you are actually seen. I get that they are busy, but with the flow of patience and the age group this 30 to 40 minute wait is unacceptable. And when asked about the time the receptionist got snooty and said it's only been 4 minutes. Well, when I am told the first procedure will be at 7:30a and the second is at 7:40am, nowhere did they say arrive at those times. Now they lady that we went to to sign paperwork was very nice and checked on the first procedure for me and actually thanked me for mentioning it bc she did t know about it. Why can't the other reception be more like her and care more? Needless to say I hope I never need this place. DO NOT GET ME WRONG THE DOCTORS AND NURSES WERE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. But the receptionist is the fist point of contact and they set the tone for your visit, if they are rude then your visit is very unpleasant. read more

WOULD AVOID AT ALL COST! if your reading this I only hope you will see the sincerity to help you avoid making my mistake in seeking this companies services. Here is a summary of recent experiences: 1. Waited 2 months (scheduled appointment with my doctors office in July) for PRK candidacy appointment and recieved call to confirm LASIK/PRK Appointment day before. I was NOT informed I wasn't supposed to be wearing contacts for 2 weeks prior to appointment, arrived there and had to reschedule an additional 2 weeks later. **1st dissapointment/frustrating event** 2. Went to the rescheduled appointment and went through all tests. Upon leaving I was told to sit at the side of the front desk to scheduling for PRK surgery and when called to the table was given a price quote of 1750$ per eye and date of scheduled surgery. I Asked to pay for surgery so everything was taken care of. I Was told I could not pay at that time and to pay on date of surgery which was scheduled 2 weeks later.**2nd dissapointment/frustrating event** 3. Recieved call from South Eye Care to confirm surgery time and verify price which was now 2250$ per eye and total would be 4500$ excluding taxes. When I told them this was not the original price quote and I couldnt affort the new quote I was told they would call back. Waited all day from initial call at 11:56AM until 1 hour before closing 4:00 PM. I called to check on whatever information I was told I'd be called back for in hopes I would not have to cancel to be informed that "they can't do what was originally quoted" so I had no choice but to canceled the surgery.**Last/Final dissapointment/frustrating event** This company has no problem waisting your time, lying, making you wait, and no regard for your schedule, and is down right suspicious and untrustworthy. I can't believe my doctor recommended these scoundrels and the fact that they get business makes me sick. I hope this review saves at least 1 person from having promises broken, being lied to, and having and being taken advantage of. I hope if you've reached this point you help me in spreading the word that this is not right and the appropriate parties should be evaluated for integrity and held accountable for their actions. The area of eye center south that could use a makeover is the billing dept. I visited the location twice, both times advising them i did NOT have medicare, and yet they billed medicare both times. If this is their normal practice it borders fraud! read more

A place deserves ZERO stars!First appointment was at 10:30am we finally saw Dr Heersink for 37 seconds at 1:45pm, the follow-up appointment the next week was for 9:00am after a 30 minute wait and having 3 people called back that arrived after us , we get to the back, they had my husbands chart wrong and the wrong eye listed, we make it to the second waiting room , they called back 6 more patients before us and again they arrived after us! At 11:45 we left without seeing the Dr. This place is horrible they have horrendous check-in/check-out personnel! Do NOT waste your time with this place! We(my husband) were contacted by Eye Center South because my husband had not been pleased with our last visit, so they wanted us to "try again"... they set us an appointment and then sent 2 to 3 text messages with time and date to confirm and remind us..We are 1 1/2 hours from Dothan so we got there for our appointment which was at 8:50,10 or 15 minutes early. They weren't even open on that day. We were the only ones there although when we called the number, the answering service was nice enough to say maybe we were too early! Yeah by a few days. Needless to say with the price of gas and time lost to travel a total of 3 hours and on his birthday of all days, we are not amused. It'd be nice to get the gas money back folks for your error! I did get in a room and saw the doctor but apparently someone screwed up the paperwork and now I am in my 4th waiting area waiting for this "SIMPLE" procedure to get done. Absolutely absurd!!! They herd people through there like cattle, hours waiting in waiting rooms. They messed up my vision with an unneeded procedure and then then the "clinical director" refused to accept responsibility for it and expected me to pay them again to fix it. I will go somewhere else to get my eye fixed, even if I have to drive hundreds of miles. They also did cataract surgery on my girlfriend and put the wrong lenses in the wrong eyes. Eye Center South and Dr. Ludwig knowingly allowed my wife to drive all the way to Dothan, an hour each way, only to wait an hour to get in and be told she couldn't see our son since he would not wear a mask. A 2 year old!! There was no mention of this on their confirmation call. Mind you, this is the same doctor who saw back him back in June of this year while COVID was an issue. Waited for 3 months on this appointment based on referral for him to see a specialist with his condition!! read more

I am extremely impressed in the care my 3 year old daughter received. We had some of the sweetest nurses I have ever seen in my life. They gave my daughter a stuffed puppy dog coloring book crayons and let her borrow a portable DVD player to watch while we waited. I highly recommend this center. read more

Dr. Heirsink almost let my mom go blind . She was really depressed at the time and he MENTIONED that she may need to get checked for glaucoma, but did not act like it was a big deal at all. Thanks to Dr. Sturridge for helping her and doing good surgery she can still see. She has A LOT of optic nerve damage. This nerve damage probably wouldn't be near as bad if Dr. H would have told her how IMPORTANT it was for her to see Sturridge SOONER!!! She is REALLY sad about it all. It breaks my heart to see her suffer. There was actually a lady Eye Dr. that she went to for a second opinion for that told my mom she needed to see Sturridge A.S.A.P!! Pray for my mom. She has survived cancer , had R.A. , raised 3 kids through it all and now has to worry about losing her vision:( read more

I am a veteran and have been referred to eyecenter south by the va. Obviously eyecenter south does not like the VA for what reason, who knows. My va optometrist referred me, because they could not diagnose my problem. After my second visit they told me I needed another referral, (I was told by the Dr. they would request that for me due to my inability to see. I was in quite a bit of pain especially in the sunlight. Four weeks pass, before I finally got a hold of my VA eyecare provider. He informed me that they have not received any correspondence from ECS. Six weeks or so later, still have no eyesight in left eye and getting worse. VA tells me they get no correspondence from ECS, while ECS states that they have sent paperwork to VA. During one of my calls to ECS a representative told me in vague terms that they have a difficult time getting there funds from VA! OK I guess I can relate, so in the meantime I struggle with very poor sight. Then I called for a copy of my records from ECS. Was informed it would cost me $1. per page. Guess the new fancy building has got them doing business in a fancy manner. So if you are a veteran with VA healthcare, do yourself a favor and find an alternative eye care solution. Wonder if I was able to pay in cash would I have the same eye care. read more
