I went into Benjamin Optical on the way back from my son's pediatric appointment. The storefront…read morecaught my attention because I noticed that it was a newly added business in the area since I had last visited. It then dawned on me...ding ding ding; my glasses needed to be repaired and fast. I walked in immediately in need of help for what has already been a few months past of wearing broken glasses frames. Benjamin Optical is a trusted optical since 1950 having opened a new location in East New York, Brooklyn just last year in December 2019. To my knowledge Church Avenue is by far one of the two Benjamin Optical locations in Brooklyn. It seems as though they are branching out in all the five boroughs of New York City with other stores in Manhattan and Staten Island. Hopefully, they can swing over to Queens and have me as a loyal customer someday (Hey don't forget about us over here guys lol). I head in eager to get these 3 year old going on 4 years glasses frames of mine a new arm (that sounds weird but I am serious). So, as soon as I step in and head toward the back of the store a very pleasant woman comes from one of the back rooms and greets me so nicely. She asks what I know I needed and wanted, HELP, or should I say the glasses . I pull out the frames from my bag and lets just say everything else spoke for itself. The women tells me with no hesitation "let's see what we can do." Although in the back of my mind I knew that she meant "sure that can be fixed," but did not want to get my hopes up just in case. Things do happen where proper parts can't fit, be matched and what not...you know? The inside of the optical is very clean with a nice selection of frames of all shapes, sizes and styles. Designer and off brands are both displayed equally, but everything is organized beautifully none the least. Seating is good and they do enforce masks and social distancing as a must upon entering and waiting for service. Meanwhile, I waited patiently, not even sitting down because I was interested in browsing some of the other frames they had on display that caught my eye. Oh, and the anxiety of hoping my frames got fixed with no problems. In between time waiting, she came to help other customers of course, but I just hoped that she was handing me my fixed frames each time she came out. About 10 minutes pass and she finally lets me know I'm all set and ready to go. I pay the five dollars which was far beyond affordable and she insists that I try them on before walking out. That I did, and surely they fit so comfortably. They were symmetric on both sides, the lens were cleaned nicely and the nose buds were snug and soft. I no longer have to drive or walk around with one armed frames and split nose buds. I recommend Benjamin Optical for their well known customer service over the years in the various communities in New York City. If you are in Manhattan, Brooklyn or Staten Island look them up and give them a try. You will be satisfied with the service and quality received from the staff and the appealing frames to choose for your style and comfort.

I had a very frustrating experience with this eye doctor's office after my entire family went there…read morefor eye exams. I purchased both glasses and contact lenses from this office and initially had a good enough experience to continue doing business with them. Unfortunately, my experience when I needed additional contact lenses for my child was very different. The issue involved my child's contact lens prescription. The prescription we were initially given contained an incorrect address and other data-entry errors. When I noticed the errors, I contacted the office and asked them to email me a corrected copy so I would not have to make another trip across town. What was particularly concerning is that three different employees, on three separate occasions, told me that they could not email me the prescription because it violated HIPAA. This was not just one employee misunderstanding the policy. I was given the same explanation by two female employees and one male employee on separate occasions. At that point, it made me question whether this was something employees were being trained to tell customers. The third time, I pushed back and told the employee that I did not believe that was correct. My understanding is that HIPAA does not categorically prohibit a healthcare provider from emailing a patient's contact lens prescription. I found it very concerning that HIPAA was repeatedly presented to me as the reason they could not provide my child's corrected prescription by email. Because they refused to email the corrected prescription, I had to make another trip across town simply to obtain the corrected version. There was also a serious issue regarding pricing. I only needed additional contact lenses for my child. When I explained that Costco was charging less for the same contacts, a salesperson told me that they would charge me the same price. Based on that conversation, I believed the office was matching Costco's price. When I returned to pick up the contact lenses, I asked for an itemized receipt and asked how much the contacts actually cost because I noticed that my FSA balance did not appear to be correct. I was then told that I had actually been charged the original, higher price. I was never given a clear breakdown of the pricing, and the way the price was communicated led me to believe that I was receiving the same price as Costco. I subsequently checked Costco myself and found that the same contact lenses were $124 at Costco compared with $218 that I was charged here. That is a $94 difference. This also makes me question what I was charged when my entire family originally purchased glasses and contacts from this office. After seeing this price difference, I now have concerns that I may have paid significantly more than necessary for those purchases as well. My biggest concern is the lack of transparency surrounding pricing and insurance/FSA benefits. Based on my experience, I strongly recommend that customers do their own research and not rely solely on what they are told about insurance coverage, FSA benefits, or pricing. Make sure you understand the actual retail price, what your insurance is paying, what you are paying out of pocket, and exactly how much is being charged to your FSA. I cannot say what the office's intentions are, but my experience left me with the impression that the focus was on maximizing what could be charged through my insurance/FSA rather than making the pricing completely transparent to me as the customer. I am especially disappointed because I had previously purchased glasses and contacts from this office and was returning simply because my child needed additional contact lenses. After this experience, I would think twice before making another purchase here. Beware and do your homework. Compare prices before purchasing, ask for an itemized receipt, verify the actual cost of the products, and carefully review how your insurance or FSA is being used. Do not assume that the price you are being quoted is the best price simply because it is being presented as an insurance or FSA benefit.

Most of the Optometrists here though, not so much. To be fair, I probably should actually take heed of Yelp ratings while selecting the locations to which I wish to get my prescriptions updated, but I have a history of giving locations a "benefit of a doubt" with things like that, which is to my own detriment. In any case, I came to this location a couple of weeks ago and was met with friendly, organized and relatively efficient staff. Each step of the experience, from the doctor's eye-exam to the frames selection was pretty much what I'd want or expect while updating my prescription. The Dr. Levi was particularly helpful and informative and I'd even say attentive to, not just makesure my prescription was right (and it was VERY right, I'm wearing them right now and it's the sharpest my vision has been in nearly a decade!) but also, he was sure to ask numerous questions and recommend a follow-up visit with an ophthalmologist for which he wrote me a referral. All-in-all it was probably the best experience I've had with an eye-care place since I moved here. Would recommend highly.
