I made it known that I was a new patient and I asked, "Can I make an appointment?". She didn't respond. I expected her to say at least "yes" or "sure" and offer his availability for the week. So I asked, "Is he available this week?". She gave me a vague response. I broke it down and asked "Is he in the office every day? What are the hours?". Her response to this was also vague. She said that the doctor comes in "early" on this and that day, and works "late" on these days. I wanted the specifics, so that I can make an appointment. I don't know, maybe she's a new hire. I decided to not make an appointment.

Thanks to Dr. Ancona, I can now watch TV and knit without removing my glasses! In fact I'm wearing…read morethem right now while writing this review on a phone. I had a terrible experience at another optometrist in San Francisco which cost me a lot of money despite a second try without charge. Two prescriptions and they both gave me terrible headaches. One of my eyes can read up close and the other cannot and the one that can't read up close can see distance but the other eye that can read has poor distance vision. After speaking to a number of other businesses and not finding anyone I felt comfortable with, I decided to come home to Brooklyn and try Eyedrop Optique. Dr. Ancona was immediately warm and welcoming, (the kind of hospitality one finds only in New York City if you know what I mean) and of course I felt comfortable because of his ability to listen and understand the problem. He explained with helpful metaphor why the prescription I had in the glasses were not beneficial, and he gave me a choice of correction because of the differences in prescription in each eye. There were no choices with the other optometrist. Not only did he give me a prescription that doesn't give me headaches, he also had the tint of the lenses matched, which was not typical but something I had spent time perfecting on Affinity Photo. To top off the working prescription, due to COVID, I decided to return to San Francisco sooner before the glasses were ready. I offered paid packaging to have them shipped, but Dr. Ancona insisted he take care of it. They arrived today with a generous supply of satins and some lens cleaning solution. Thank you, Dr. Ancona!

TLDR: Hostile, unprofessional doctor who publicly berated patient. Potentially discriminatory…read morebehavior. AVOID. During a routine eye exam with Dr. Koster, I experienced concerning unprofessional behavior. When I mentioned having vision correction surgery 14 months prior in another country and asked about my current eye health, Dr. Koster immediately became dismissive, stating "you know, I don't do post op care for other people" and ended the appointment without answering any of my questions. By his logic, if his own patients move to another country, they would never be able to seek routine eye care from a local doctor. No surgeon, including himself I'm sure, provides post-op care indefinitely, especially for patients who relocate to a different country more than a year after their procedure. When I requested my exam results at the front desk (as none of my questions were answered), Dr. Koster followed me into the hallway and publicly berated me in front of staff and other patients, repeatedly yelling "WHY DID YOU GET SURGERY IN ANOTHER COUNTRY? WHY AREN'T YOU GOING TO THEM FOR FOLLOW UP? WHY DID YOU GET SURGERY IN A COUNTRY YOU DON'T LIVE IN? YOU SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN SURGERY WHERE YOU LIVE." His aggressive behavior and elevated tone made me extremely uncomfortable, especially as I was simply seeking a routine eye exam as a new patient. The level of hostility in his response was so disproportionate that I found myself wondering if his reaction was influenced by my age, gender, or ethnicity. I attempted to address this incident by contacting the office manager, Nicole, who apologized and offered to refer me to another doctor in the practice. However, my primary concern was Dr. Koster's unprofessional conduct, for which I never received acknowledgment or apology despite my attempts to resolve the matter privately. The practice's phone lines are managed by a shared services call center, making it extremely difficult to reach them directly. I ultimately decided not to pursue the matter further, but patients should be aware that they may encounter extremely unprofessional treatment at this practice. Patients deserve respectful and professional medical care regardless of their medical history or where they previously received treatment.

I was contemplating of going to my home contry (colombia) for lasik because it was alot cheaper but my biggest concern were the followup consultations. I was nervous about having to go back and forth incase of any complications and a consultation over the phone wouldnt help as much. Then i looked up those lasik doctors who advertise on radio with "a $1000 off using promotional code..." I dont want to bad mouth about anyone but they didnt have a good track record. So i came to the conclusion that you shouldnt be cheap when it comes to your eyes. After doing more research i found Dr. Pamel. I called up and spoke with sarah with a ton of questions, she was very patient and brought me in with a free consultation. After speaking with Dr. Pamel I felt very confident on who i would trust with these big brown eyes. To make a great story, very short, i ended up having 20/15 vision! And no complications!! Ps. I didnt realize how hands on the doctor had to be when it came to actually performing the procedure. I thought i was mostly the machine that did all the work... The right doctor has alot to do with the best outcome. I strongly recommend Dr. Pamel He's the best!

Finally, Dr. Pamel blew in for a total of 15 seconds, said "Everything's good" and left with the same abruptness. Horrible experience. Add to that a dingy, ugly, old and poorly lit office. While I have been to several other places for vision therapy (SUNY Optometry, Rusk Rehabilitation), Dr. Shapiro far surpasses them. My vision and function has dramatically improved since I started to see him. Not only is he a great eye doctor, but he thinks about your whole health and nervous system, understands how those issues tie into your vision, and takes steps to treat them. During his care, not only has my vision improved, but his various light and sound therapies have helped me with other issues I've had from my brain injury, such as digestion and emotional regulation. During my last visit, he taught me a technique for managing panic attacks using simple eye movements, something no other doctor has even mentioned. He is also a warm and caring person who genuinely cares about his patients, and he went above and beyond to coordinate my care with me via phone when COVID shut his office down for several months. He may have a humble office, but don't let that fool you - he is supremely knowledgeable, thorough, and caring. I cannot imagine a better doctor for treating any vision issue.
