This office and operation feels icky. The decor is jarring, worn out, low ceilinged. I went in specifically to get new glasses and contacts prescriptions and came home with neither. I booked with Dr. Pamel yet was seen by another doctor whom I thought was a second technician. Dr. Pamel came in for 5 minutes at the end of a 90 minute wait on my part and did no work on my vision whatsoever. The equipment and effort to test vision (as done by not Dr. Pamel) feels rinky dink, and I do not trust the new prescription; I am still waiting for test lenses to arrive and presume the office will call me when they do. read more

Worst customer service, ever. Couldn't accommodate a simple request. I've called 3 times to get a copy of my eye glasses prescription. Each time they lied and said they would email me the prescription by the end of the day. They have yes'ed me to death and never sent a thing. Khazita, the receptionist has now put me on hold for 10 minutes and counting since requesting to file a complaint. I have finally hung up and called back. I came to Dr. Pamel in 2009 after a recommendation from another patient. I originally had no intention of getting LASIK done when I first came to get a checkup, though I really desired to. After seeing Dr. Pamel for 2 years, I opted to finally undergo the surgery. I must say Dr. Pamel was extremely thorough and patient answering all of my questions (I had a lot of them!). He mentioned the good, the bad and the ugly about the procedure so I was fully informed of what I was getting into. The procedure isn't cheap by any means, but eyesight is one area I would not even compromise on and go with a cheaper alternative. I'm happy to say that the procedure was quick, the recovery wasn't bad, and Dr. Pamel and his staff are very adamant about ensuring their patients follow the correct post operation steps. I am a US Speedskater and 2014 Olympian. In April 2013, I had the incredibly fortunate opportunity to receive LASIK at the hands of Dr. Pamel and his staff. The entire experience was beyond compare. Everyone I interacted with at the office was friendly, knowledgeable, and they completely killed off my remaining fears surrounding the LASIK process. The actual procedure was unbelievably easy and took less than 10 minutes. I woke up the following morning with 20/20 in both eyes. the billing department of this doctor is totally incompetent. I receive a bill stating that it was the third notice when in fact I did 'not receive the first or the second. Last year the billing department had my check for three months without cashing . the excuse was that someone put it in a drawer and they couldn't find the key. This is such a disaster. Dr. Pamel is himself a good doctor, but he has unfortunately diluted the quality of practice by hiring a team of optometrists to handle all glasses/contacts prescribing for him. I have been unhappy with their ability to write the correct prescription and answer questions, and indeed the optometrist I recently saw said that my previous prescription from the practice was incorrect. More disturbing, Dr. Pamel's staff actively leads patients to believe that the optometrists in the practice are, like Dr. Pamel, ophthalmologists. If you call up for an appointment, they will tell you, "Dr. Pamel can't do the eyeglass fitting, but his associate, Dr. Berme will see you." As a result, I saw the optometrist repeatedly and was written a prescription for eye drop medication by her all while believing she was an ophthalmologist. The practice manager and Dr. Pamel we both completely unfazed when I raised this concern. Their defense is that the Drs. names are listed on the door to the practice. If you look at his website, it's only Dr. Pamel who has a bio up. It is weirdly misleading. read more

My name is Xander Mark, I am a member of the U.S. National Sprint SpeedSkating Team. I received PRK Lasik surgery in June of 2014 with Dr. Pamel in NYC. I have worn glasses/contacts since the age of 8 & I can honestly say this has been one of the best things I've ever decided to do! Dr. Pamel & his staff are so inviting, making me feel right at home upon arriving in NYC. After throughly going over all of my options it was found that I had steep corneas. Dr. Pamel was very quick to assure me this was not a bad thing but that I would best benefit from PRK Lasik as apposed to the more common Lasik procedure. The day of the procedure everything went extremely smooth & I was in & out of the office within what felt like minutes! I was immediately able to see the world clearly without corrective lenses for the first time in almost 16 years! It was an amazing experience. The PRK procedure itself was painless. In the following week or so I experienced quite a bit of pain & discomfort which Dr. Pamel throughly explained was part of the healing process of PRK. After healing completely I can say the pain & discomfort I experienced was completely worth it to have the 20/15 eyesight I have today. Being an elite athlete it is extremely important to have the best vision possible. In our sport of Speedskating traveling around an oval at speeds upwards of 45mph having LASIK has really improved my performance. In the past having corrective lenses that would sometimes get dry & fly out of my eyes would hinder my performance. Dr. Pamel performed multifocal cataract surgeries on both eyes for my wife about 2 years ago. THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC! WE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A SECOND OPINION BEFORE WE PROCEEDED WITH DR. PAMEL. Since the surgeries we have conferred with 3 top ophthalmologists. The take-away based on what we believe to be fair and thorough descriptions of what transpired with Dr. Pamel and his office is that all three ophthalmologists agree: Dr. Pamel rushed us through the appointments leading up to and following the surgeries; monofocal surgery should have been recommended; multifocal surgery should have been aggressively discouraged against; the pros and cons of multifocal versus monofocal cataract surgery were not fully explained in a thorough and relaxed manner; potential problems were minimized; he rushed us; and my wife was not thoroughly screened with respect to the probability of her suffering potential problems well known to the profession that commonly occur among many patients post multifocal surgery. The problems my wife has been suffering with have proven to be functionally and psychologically devastating. We met with Dr. Pamel several times since the surgery and complained about all of the above. We found him to be defensive and in denial of everything to which we attested. He never considered he might be at fault in any way. He offered recommendations that included at least one unnecessary and costly procedure (according to the expert ophthalmologists with whom we subsequently conferred) without offering any financial consideration. Although we haven't done so yet, we've entertained asking Dr. Pamel for a refund for the cost of the surgeries. We would NOT entertain legal remedy. We had complained to his office manager and other staff members several times pre and post surgery that we found the wait in the office to be repeatedly excessive and that we then felt rushed through appointments. She apologized and said there had been staff turnover that caused these problems. Having said all this, IN ALL FAIRNESS TO DR. PAMEL, THE OPHTHALMOLOGISTS WITH WHOM WE CONFERRED ALL AGREED THAT DR. PAMEL'S SURGERIES WERE FLAWLESS, and that the monofocal surgery does not satisfy all patients. Nevertheless, a flawless surgery that probably should not have been performed to begin with has limited consolation; the surgeries cannot be reversed without very high risk; and although we continue to pursue solutions to the problems that have resulted from the surgeries, options are very limited. WE FEEL VERY STRONGLY DR. PAMEL RUSHED US; WAS NOT OBJECTIVE AND THOROUGH; HE RECOMMENDED AND PERFORMED THE WRONG SURGERIES CONSIDERING THE PROFILE OF THE PATIENT; THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC! 20/15!!!! I couldnt be happier with my lasik surgery! I have to be honest. I was contemplating of going to my home contry (colombia) for lasik because it was alot cheaper but my biggest concern were the followup consultations. I was nervous about having to go back and forth incase of any complications and a consultation over the phone wouldnt help as much. Then i looked up those lasik doctors who advertise on radio with "a $1000 off using promotional code..." I dont want to bad mouth about anyone but they didnt have a good track record. So i came to the conclusion that you shouldnt be cheap when it comes to your eyes. After doing more research i found Dr. Pamel. I called up and spoke with sarah with a ton of questions, she was very patient and brought me in with a free consultation. After speaking with Dr. Pamel I felt very confident on who i would trust with these big brown eyes. To make a great story, very short, i ended up having 20/15 vision! And no complications!! Ps. I didnt realize how hands on the doctor had to be when it came to actually performing the procedure. I thought i was mostly the machine that did all the work... Went for my annual checkup today. Came home very disappointed. Even though I am a medicare patient I don't like the idea that this practice feels like a "Mill" or clinic. The technican who gave me my preliminary tests was abrupt and not very professional. I saw the Dr. for a total of 2 minutes maybe 3. I originally came to see him for Glaucoma suspect and we had no discussion of this. Somehow when I checked out I was billed for a prescription for eye glasses I did not ask for. I was being charged 75 dollars for this. Excuse me! I was shocked. The answer was that I signed a paper allowing this. I did get a refund but felt this was ridiculous. I feel Dr Pamel is a competent doctor but perhaps he overschedules patients and does not have the chance to give the patient enough attention. If you are looking for attention and you don't like feeling like just a number, this is not the practice for you read more

I had Lasik done here 4.5 years ago - Dr. Pamel is the best. He was my regular eye doctor for years, and when I decided to do Lasik, Dr. Pamel so calmly, kindly, and professionally explained everything and answered all my questions. In general, his office is quite busy, and you might have to wait weeks for an appointment with him, but he takes the 5-10 minutes he spends with you very seriously and doesn't rush you along. Friends who have had Lasik at other doctors have told me that their Lasik experiences were either painful, uncomfortable, or they didn't know what was going on during the surgery - I remember feeling completely at ease with Dr. Pamel (and this is coming from a girl with serious anxiety at doctor's offices!). He talked me through every step of the surgery during the surgery, and there was zero pain or discomfort. I tell people that my semi-annual dental cleanings are far more dramatic and painful than Lasik surgery.
