Fine dining on the island. Pasta is excellent - try to stick with those. Other things we tried - pork chop, ciopino, were very good, but not amazing to the point where I'll recall them in a few months. I found my experience similar to high end places in the city I live in - high quality, consistent very good food. Just not quite enough to justify the price tag or buzz to me. So - overall experience, service, food- high end. If that feel is what you like, I think you'll be pleased with Extra Virgin. Hands down our favorite restaurant on the island. The inside is a lovely, intimate space, with fans over almost all the tables in case of hot evenings. Service was excellent; prompt, attentive, and to the point. I enjoyed the best martini I've ever had and my boyfriend enjoyed wine off their extensive list. The star of the show, however, was obviously our meal. I got pork belly, scallop with Gorgonzola risotto, and Mahi mahi with a lobster tail, and it was all out of this world. We enjoyed many restaurants on this trip, but this one really stood out. If you have the opportunity to dine here, DO IT! read more

Great dinner spot on St. John! Everything is solid, I wasn't wowed but everything was good and didn't disappoint. Service is very professional and food came promptly (which is honestly a huge plus on this island). Bread was sorta meh so you can skip. Arugula Salad: Interesting mix with the bacon and egg, felt a bit like breakfast? I thought the bacon would be in bits but it came as 2 strips, think it would have been better if it was mixed in instead - but the bacon itself was nicely smoked. Salad overall had very fresh ingredients. Italian Sausage & Basil Gnocchi: This was just ok, it's hard to be wowed by pasta unless it's really good, and the Italian sausage was just average. The gnocchi is homemade though and pretty soft. Lump Crab & Shrimp Fettuccine: I'm a fan! They give a lot of fresh crab and shrimp, and I like that the fettuccine is interestingly in a broth. Don't expect the usual al dente sauce pasta, and just enjoy the unique preparation of seafood & pasta in broth! read more

The food was very good. We tried both Extra Virgin and Zozo's. The food here was great, without being eaten alive by bugs like at Zozo's. None of the restaurants has air conditioning, which was a shame as it was hard to enjoy the food at any of the restaurants in some of the sweltering summer heat. read more

I recommend that you make a reservation for Extra Virgin Bistro. It's a small popular restaurant with excellent food and service. For appetizers we ordered the House Made Ricotta ($18.00), Wild Mushroom Pappardelle ($18.00) and the Italian Sausage & Gnocchi. ($16.00) We loved all three appetizers but agreed that the pappardelle was the best. The pappardelle sauce has shiitake and portobello mushrooms, truffle mushroom cream and pecorino romano. It's a rich and creamy dish that satisfies. For entrees the three of us ordered the Braised Beef Short Ribs. ($43.00 each) The popularity of this dish made it a must order. If you mention to anyone on the island that you are going to this restaurant the response is always to order the short ribs. It was by far the best short ribs that I have ever had anywhere. It is served with tarragon brown sugar carrots and crispy parmesan polenta. We ended with coffee, Grand Marnier bread pudding and an apple crisp. I could only sample each dessert because I was over the top full. Both of the desserts were stars on their own and a delicious way to end a lovely meal. read more

I also enjoyed the house-made ricotta and finished my visit here with their delicious and memorable cheesecake. It was so fantastic, I took it home and ate it for breakfast. Hey, while on vacation, no rules apply! From what I understand, the menu changes pretty often, but I think you will be impressed with whatever you try here. For cocktails, I highly suggest trying the I Carried a Watermelon. Even the name is cool! Extra Virgin is a quick ride from the Westin. This spot is rated as #1 in Cruz Bay; however, I was a bit disappointed when I went there. We were seated at the bar per our request since they were booked and it was the only available option. The service was good, though it took a very long time to get our order in. Granted we were sitting at the bar we expected this (we waited about an hour for our food). My boyfriend went to the bathroom and saw a big cockroach running around. We communicated this to the manager and understand it is inevitable on an island. The restaurant is covered, but it is outdoors so it gets very muggy and hot unless you are directly under one of the AC units. The main entrees were very good and portions were large. We ordered a chocolate mousse for dessert, which was average. Overall, we were a little disappointed with the quality of the service, the drinks, and the dessert. The most comfortable upscale restaurant we visited while on the island. We were there on a Sunday night and, although we made a reservation, there were open tables all around us. It was busy though with parties arriving every few minutes. We started with a glass of the Duck Pond Pinot Gris, which I highly recommend if you enjoy a dry white wine. And the warm bread served with honey butter to start was so delicious! I had never tried mussels before so we opted for their special appetizer that night. I didn't realize that mussels have a very musky aroma and flavor, which I immediately didn't care for. They had been steeped in a tomato-based broth with ham so I enjoyed the broth with the delicious crostini, and left the generous portion of mussels to my hub. If mussels are your thing, you will enjoy. The entrees we chose were the grilled mahi mahi for me and the cioppino for him. The mahi mahi was topped with "lump crab butter", which were tender pieces of crab over the generous serving with "couscous", which is actually wild rice and cauliflower, which was surprisingly very good. The combination of the couscous, hericot verts, and beurre blanc gave the dish a comfort food-like feel and taste. My hub very much enjoyed the variety of fresh seafood in his dish. Overall it was a very nice meal and evening. We passed on dessert as we were stuffed, but we were told they are all freshly made in house. Michael was a very kind and observant server. One of the few truly fine dining restaurants on St. John that we've discovered during our week of dining ou serving a number of Italian inspired dishes and a few fresh pastas. Our party of four had a 6:30 reservation (strongly recommended) and were seated right away. Our server greeted us promptly and gave us the run down on all the stuff they grow/make by hand etc. This place feels like other fine dining restaurants in major cities in the states. We started with the house made ricotta served with crispy sour dough toasts and grilled corn and mushroom compote -very tasty. For entries we enjoyed the pappardelle with crab and shrimp (easily large enough for two), seafood cioppino with mussels, shrimp and lobster and the slow roasted beef shank (easily enough for 2-3!! Just huge!). All top quality and beautifully presented. Like all fine restaurants service was strong with water glasses kept full and all the other little flourishes you'd expect. Easily the highest quality food we've had in our many trips to St. John. Food was all perfectly prepared. Have, frustratingly, had far too many overcooked pieces of fish and seafood on the island, but not here. Both the mahi and shrimp were perfectly, just barely, cooked through. The duck confit and pork belly were similarly tender and delicious as were the filet and short ribs. Most outstanding were the pastas. As a lifelong Brooklynite, we have pretty high standards for pasta. All 3 homemade pastas are outstanding, correctly al dente and delicious. The mushroom papardelle was insanely good in particular. Would deduct a 1/2 star for location. The restaurant is open air and sits at street level with steady car traffic (for St John). Be sure to request a table in the primary space which has lots of greenery to shield it from the street and steer clear of the added tables which effectively sit in a driveway staring at the street. For this price point, that space frankly shouldn't even be offered as it's a clear step down from the primary space. read more

Exceptional service and exceptional food. You will be very pleased when you make reservations and dine with these folks. We are frequent diners and I can tell you this was way up there on service and quality of food. Get off the ferry in Cruz bay and walk straight up the street. Pass Woodys keep walking and you will see a baseball field on the right. Look left in the foliage and you will find Extra Virgin. They are tucked nicely into the palms and then you will sit on a southern style porch with very unique ceiling fans. Check them out! The service is timely and extremely professional. They know what their doing and it shows. Our water was always full and our wine was never empty. The food was delicious and perfectly cooked to order. We had the baby spinach salad for starters and I'd never had pickled beets in a spinach salad but wow! The shrimp and lump crab pappardelle is awesome and a must if you dine here. My wife ordered the 14oz ribeye and I swear it was a full pound. What a perfectly seasoned and cooked meal. The potatoes au gratin have a Parmesan crust that could be a dessert! Please do yourself a favor and make reservations with these folks while your are visiting the islands or a local. They will get busy and you don't want to miss this experience. read more

This past week, my husband and I split the ravioli appetizer and the Short Rib entree on our last night in St John. The sides and sauces are really good and creative. It was fantastic! Last night on St John. So we picked ExtraVirgin as the spot. Read through some of the reviews and talked to a local who had some good things to say about his time here. Ordered a "Strawberry Fields" handcrafted cocktail because - The Beatles - and which has the essential ingredients of a Negroni but with some additions. Very nice. The bread brought to the table was also nicely done - had orange zest and orange juice mixed into the batter and these gave it a hint of sweetness that was clear but not at all overpowering. Great idea. One of our appetizers consisted of Smoked pork and garlic sausage with peppers and a mustardy aeoli sauce. Solid. A second appetizer consisted of Duck confit and Sweet Potato - that was Delicious! Would have loved that as an entree actually. My wife and I split two mains - the Short Ribs with sweet carrots and garlic mashed potatoes - that was AMAZING. The meat literally fell of the bone and melted in the mouth. And the portion was HUGE. It was easily enough for two people. We also had the Shrimp and Crab Papperdelle which was also nicely done. Not the absolute home run that the short ribs were but still very very nice. Our waiter was prompt knowledgeable courteous and affable. Excellent work on his part. The atmosphere was also very nice. As a visitor, we were unable to get a last minute reservation at Extra Virgin Bistro. I'm really not sure how to rate Extra Virgin Bistro since we couldn't get in but maybe this post will help you get a reservation! They open at 5:30 and we walked in at 4:28 to make reservations but they were 100% booked, even at the bar. Now...we were here on Christmas Eve so I'm guessing it's a super busy night. Long story short, I can't really make a recommendation on the food but I can highly recommend you make reservations well before 62 minutes prior to their opening of the business day.
