I'm gluten free so I struggled a tad, but overall zero complaints. This place is great! I can't rave enough about the homemade ricotta. We ordered it with honeycomb. Worth it. Trust me. We split the arugula salad and the catch of the day for our meal. Catch of the day turned out to be swordfish. It was cooked so perfectly. The bartenders make lots of delicious treats - some of them being assorted cellos - we tried the lemon cello and the chocolate cello. So good!! Extra virgin is obviously Italian, so if you're craving handmade pastas, go here. They also make their own cheeses and charcuterie meats in house. This place does not mess around. So glad we finally go to try it!

This is a great restaurant. 3 of us had reservations for the bar, which is a huge plus, since you can order ala carte. The bar tender, Jena is a mistro and so fun to watch, I love a good bartender. For the food my wife and I shared. This was like day 6 already on holiday and I must admit I was full from all we've eaten all week long. We shared the confit duck leg, oh so good, Prince Edward Island mussels in a delicious sauce, argula salad and the Cioppino, with Caribbean lobster, gulf shrimp and mussels in a tomato broth. I would have love this over pasta and called a day. The focaccia to dip in the sauce was pretty damn good. Unfortunately, I was to stuffed for desert, I did have an oreo back at the Westin. This place is not cheap, probably the most elegant restaurant s on island. We sat at the bar, so I can't speak about the service, but it looked on point. Forgot to take pics of our dishes, but here's the bartender in action

An unexpected stop for lunch during a cruise stop in Old San Juan, PR, the Istanbul Restaurant was…read morea combination of Turkish dishes along with dishes native to Puerto Rico. My brother and I tried dishes from both menus, and found it to be quite good. As we were walking past, a small sign for 'Grandma's Kitchen' caught our eye. My brother had been encouraging me to try Puerto Rico's national dish: Mofongo - mashed fried plantains. Unfortunately, restaurants were just packed with long waits and I wasn't in the mood to wait outside in the sun for a long time. The door next to the sign stated that it was a restaurant called 'Istanbul'. We peaked inside, and was welcomed warmly by a host, who let us know that the restaurant was both Grandma's Kitchen/Istanbul. There was nobody else dining inside, which was weird considering how every other restaurant in the area was packed. The dishes are made to order, so took a bit of time for it to come out one at a time. Mixed Seafood Stuffed Mofongo ($25) - served in a wooden pilon, the tall and narrow neck was stuffed with the mashed plantains, topped with a seafood blend of clams, dense fish pieces, octopus, and squid. The sauce was really well done, not too rich, but buttery enough to accentuate the seafood. I have to believe the seafood was prepared from frozen, but it tasted really good: a definite notch up from the seafood I've been having on the cruise boats. It was the first time having mofongo, and I liked it. This version had fried plantain chips, mixed with the mash of more plantains. I don't think this version had pork skin rinds, and I didn't miss it. It's extremely dense, so ended up eating maybe a third of it while finishing the seafood. It's a solid alternative to rice, though definitely can't eat too much of it. Doner Kebab ($18) - from the Istanbul portion of the menu, this dish was tasty, though the meat was cooked on a flat top grill like a burger patty, instead of on a vertical rotisserie. The lamb/beef patty was loosely formed and well seasoned, with the accompanying tzatziki sauce being a good add-on. Both dishes were cooked very well, the back kitchen has some skills. Service was friendly throughout. Water is not offered, but guessing they will give to you if asked. Payment was provided after the meal, and they do stick on a mandatory 15% gratuity for all party sizes.

I had a hankering for a good gyro, so actively sought this place out after seeing it on Yelp. It was decent. Located in the Nisky shopping center, Broken Plate occupies the former location of a popular restaurant called Salt'n'Vinegar. It has been open for about two years, and has a mostly local clientele. The parking lot of the mall was packed with cars, even during morning. Daria was our hostess/waitress and was informative throughout. The lunch menu is not available until 11am, so had to order items off of the breakfast menu. Most things are a la carte. Pistachio Crusted French Toast ($14) - One large piece of stuffed french toast, cut diagonally. Described as 'stuffed with honey, vanilla, pistachio cream, topped with berries and powdered sugar'. The berries were fresh blueberries. I stole a bite, and it was delicious. It didn't need syrup. Gyro breakfast ($18) - the meat is described as lamb doner, but it had not been prepared from a rotating spit. Instead, the meat was a good representation of food service gyro meat, reheated on a grill...which considering where we were, was pretty good. The plate included any 2 eggs, so got it scrambled soft and it was prepared well. The breakfast doesn't come with Tzatziki, which was an extra $2. It came with pita bread, and thinly sliced peppers and onions. It ended up being a satisfying gyro sandwich. My brother continued to shoot the breeze with our waitress while I finished my gyro. She recommended some places to get whole fried fish, which is what the area is famous for. The bill came and that's when I realized there is no sales tax in the USVI. Payment was easy, and because it uses USD, was able to use a CC that doesn't waive foreign transaction fees.

Our flights routed through Atlanta to St. Thomas; there are no flights to St. John, only a ferry from St. John (or St. Croix), so we stayed one overnight at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove, which is next-door on the peninsula from the Westin, which is where you find Luna Mar; Frenchman's Cove offers rides in the hotel shuttles, and you can also walk... note that the short distance is hilly, and there are some blind spots but can also hear the cars coming, so if you walk, you should apply common sense and use all five physical senses and you'll be ok. Luna Mar, at the Westin, is a fantastic property, with wonderful views of Charlotte-Amalie and the rest of St. Thomas in one direction, and a view out into the ocean to the other direction. Luna Mar is an open-air restaurant... yet no insects! Unsure how that was/is possible, but we do confirm that there were no insects the night we dined there. Luna Mar serves fantastic food, which I thoroughly enjoyed with my wonderful wife at great restaurant with amazing views - Aegean lemon chicken - "Roasted chicken, oregano-lemon sauce, warm potatoes & arugula salad" - Chicken and regular and purple potatoes... with green beans... atop small salad... fantastic all around... chicken crispy on outside and juicy inside; fantastic potatoes - Provence-style sea bass - "Cannelloni purée, romesco sauce, lemon-garlic broccolini, peperonata, olive oil Aaliya - thank you for serving us on our visit. My partner and I…read moretraveled from New York to Puerto Rico to visit his family for Thanksgiving week, and we decided to take his parents, siblings, and nephew out for a nice pre-Thanksgiving dinner. We saw Kalizo , thought it looked upscale and promising, and chose it for what was supposed to be a special family night. Instead, it turned into one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. From the moment we arrived, the service was disrespectful and careless. We were a party of six, and the host simply pointed to a section and told us to "sit over there" -- no greeting, no walk-through. He dropped the menus on the table and walked away. We sat for over 20 minutes with no one approaching us for drinks or orders. We had to stop multiple staff members just to ask, "Can we please get a waiter?" Each time we were told someone was coming, but no one did. When the waiter finally showed up, he acted rushed, uninterested, and dismissive. He kept telling us that several items we wanted were "not available," rushing us to pick something else. I ended up ordering something quick because I honestly didn't know if he'd ever come back. Meanwhile, there were only about three other tables occupied, and we noticed something very uncomfortable: The English-speaking white customers were getting A1 treatment -- constant refills, servers checking in on them, drinks delivered correctly, food synchronized -- everything. Our table, where we were mostly speaking Spanish with my partner's family, was basically ignored. Our drinks came out wrong. Refills took three or more requests. Food came out one plate at a time, so half the table was done eating before the rest of us even received our meals. My plate was missing the sides and sauces it came with. I had to physically get up and find someone to ask for them. At one point, after asking three times for a Sprite refill, I just stood up and went straight to someone and said, "Can you please just bring me a Sprite can, a to-go box, and the check?" because I had enough. The food itself? Not good. Definitely not worth the price. And the service? Terrible. A woman who worked there quietly apologized to us and said she saw everything happening, but she couldn't intervene because she wasn't a server. That says enough about the environment. Overall, it felt like we were treated differently simply because they assumed we were locals or because we were speaking Spanish. Meanwhile, the tables of English-speaking tourists got excellent service. What was supposed to be a nice family dinner turned into a frustrating, embarrassing, and disappointing experience. I would not recommend this place, especially if you're expecting fair service or celebrating something special.
