Started out paying about $60/month for a 5x15 unit. Within months the rate went up, a few months later it went up again so within a year it basically doubled. This place advertises "climate controlled storage," so we rented a small unit to store my daughter's dorm furnishings over the summer (May - August). When we went to retrieve the things on Labor Day weekend, everything that we had not sealed in bags was covered in mold and mildew. (See pictures) When I spoke to the manager (Troy) about this, he pointed out that I had declined insurance on the rental. He was right. I had not purchased the insurance. Why would we need insurance for relatively inexpensive belongings for a short period when they are secured in a climate-controlled environment? When I said this to him, Troy explained to me that the company distinguishes between "climate controlled" and "humidity controlled" spaces. I laughed out loud. If "climate control" doesn't include control for humidity, then what in the world does it include?? Their representation of the service they provide is called MISPREPRESENTATION in advertising, at best--and FRAUD at worst. A call from some manager in an office somewhere else called to discuss my "case," and she repeated the same absurd lines about my declining insurance and the fact that they had "a very humid summer in Connecticut." Look at the pictures. Do not rent any unit at this facility if you expect anything other than a tin roof over your belongings. This isn't about the cost of replacing these items (total of about $125). I just cannot abide this kind of shady business practice. read more

Avoid this place if you want your precious belongings to be safe! Background: Fiancee and I had two climate-controlled units at this location spanning a period of 1 year and our experience was bad. Here are reasons to avoid this place: First big issue: bait and switch! They offer you a "web rate" price that is a few dollars cheaper per month. They later changed that monthly rate on us. Details: On the third month, my bill magically went up from $47 to $52 for one unit. I called to ask what was going on and was told a BS answer along the lines of "due to economic reasons, we had to re-evaluate our prices and blah blah blah. You should have received a letter in the mail explaining the change." Well, I didn't. I would have believed that the mail was lost if it weren't for the repeat scenario with the second unit. Again, on the 3rd month, my fiancee's unit price went from $90 to $100 and she received no notice. I find it impossible to believe that her notification letter was lost in the mail as well. Since you already moved in all your stuff, it's doubtful you will go through the hassle of moving and they know it. Second major issue: WATER DAMAGE. Our expensive bedroom furniture was damaged with EXTENSIVE mold after being in the a climate-controlled unit for 6 months. Not just some mold spots here and there, but entire back panels, drawer bottom panels, and bed headboard. When the movers came to unload the unit, they said they had never seen that much mold in one furniture. It was so extensive that it couldn't have been simply the climate-controlled failing, but likely a water leak. Staff of course reported no such thing and as you may guess, the contract you signed says they are not liable for anything and you have to work through the insurance company to recover your loss. read more

On 25 April 2014, I rented a 10' x 10" storage unit at the Extra Space Storage facility located at 132 Silas Deane Hwy. in Wethersfield, CT at a first-month promotional rate of $84.24. I did so with the understanding that the following month the total monthly charges for the unit would automatically increase $34.24 to a regular rate of $118.48 per month. No one at the facility informed me that subsequent rate increases would be frequent and substantial. Only four months later on 25 September 2014, total monthly charges increased $8.51 to a new rate of $126.99. May 25, 2015, eight months later, the monthly charges were raised again, this time over $10.00. The new increase, in the amount of $10.63, brought the monthly charge total up to $137.62. Not counting the promotional fee, this marked the second rate increase in a twelve-month period. Nine months later, on 25 February 2016, the monthly charges were increased nearly nine dollars to $146.13.At this point, not counting the first month promotion fee, the monthly charge for my storage space had risen nearly $30.00 in less than two years. The next rate increase of $10.63 occurred in September 2017. On the 25thof that month, the total monthly charges rose to $156.76. Less than a year later, nine months to be exact, the monthly charges increase to $162.02 on 25 June 2018. On 25 November 2019, the total monthly charges increased to $172.65. As a courtesy, Extra Space Storage capped the new increase at $167.33. To summarize, between 25 May 2014 and 25 November 2019, the monthly rate increase for the storage unit has gone from $118.48 to $172.65--an increase of $54.17 per month. That's just short of a 50 percent increase in total monthly charges over a five and a half year period. This averages out to an approximately $120 increase in annual charges each an every year. Since the facility has offered no additional services or benefits to its customers, how can this be reasonably explained so that it doesn't appear as outright price gouging? Moreover, these increases have usually occur without prior written or even verbal notice. I have been informed of these increases when I phoned the facility to pay my monthly bill. Over the years when I have asked staff at the facility about this, they have replied: "We don't do that. Notice of rate increases are sent out by the corporate office." After the most recent rate increase, I phoned the facility to express an agent my deep concern about the sharp and steady rise in the monthly rental rate for the unit. When I asked for an explanation, she glibly replied: "Well, everything goes up." I did not and do not find that response in any way responsive. She then went on to say that I should expect the increases to continue with the same frequency and in approximately the same amount if not more. As of July 2021, my month storage charges have increase three times. read more

Really positive "new customer" experience with this location. Prices were better than any place local, it's convenient (tucked away on the Berlin Turnpike) and like another reviewer, I got a call within 10 minutes of placing a reservation, telling me they had one unit of the type I was looking for left, so I needed to come down if I wanted it. The assistant manager (Joe) spent a lot of time with me, explaining things, showing me the unit, demoing the security keypads. The unit and property were clean and well maintained. The sign up process was a bit involved / took some time but all very organized and automated. read more

I wish I could give them 0 stars. There is definitely the bait and switch as mentioned by Someone S. It went from $38 to $44, right as the customer service became infuriating. The supervisor there is extremely rude (Leah Funsari). They did not set up auto-pay when we asked them to the first time. We set it up 3 times (once every month) online, and we still got hit with late fees, even though we got confirmation emails, because it did not "go through." I will never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Great facility, very clean, very friendly staff. I went online to reserve a unit and within 2 minutes, they called me to follow up. That impressed the hell out of me. I reserved a 5x10 for some extra junk I have. They had a web rate of first month free and $34/month. They tell you outright that you need to buy one of their insurance plans for an extra $10-20 per month, depending on what your stuff is worth. They hooked me up with a lock, which wasn't super expensive. they even offered to help me move one of my pieces of furniture that I brought! The two guys working (Rafael and John, if I recall correctly) were extremely friendly and helpful. They do monthly billing, month-to-month with no lease. It's taken right out of my credit card or checking account. The facility is big, and the only reason this place gets 4 stars not 5 is because the inside units are poorly lit. Otherwise, the whole place was in fantastic shape, and they helped me every step of the way. Already recommended it to two friends in the Berlin area. read more

It seems that most of the positive reviews were either done long time ago or possibly by the people associated with this location. Here is my experience and hopefully someone will benefit from it: 1. Do not believe the online reservation or any "specials". You arrive at the facility with a confirmation number and they cannot find it in their system. You end up with either looking for another storage place or agreeing to their regular price. First month free promise is to get you in the door. 2. Add $10 a month to the bill for mandatory "insurance" coverage. There is no way around it and that was the lowest amount "available" for my unit. 3. Read anything that you sign twice. It takes long time to unload stuff and with your busy life schedule the last thing you will do is change facilities. And that is where they get you. There is a clause that the rates are not guaranteed. 5 months into the lease and I received a postcard. The lease went up $20 a month. 4. This is not my first negative experience with Olsen Road, but it will be the last one. read more
