Just a sweet little update for my favorite restaurant in Charlotte, if not the entire Southern East…read moreCoast. On every visit to Charlotte, I stop here 2-3 times, whether it's to meet up with friends and colleagues for lunch, to grab a quite bite before evening plans, to spend happy hours and dinners on that delightful back patio or to pick up that insane vegan dessert I've been craving. I mean, can it get any better than a spread of vegan elote corn, nachos smothered with beans, seitan, guac/queso/crema or my new favorite, the crunch wrap with a glass of something icy cold (I usually get a glass of something sparkling at the back bar). Since my last review almost 5 years ago, they sadly removed the matcha cruffin (that I still can't get out of my head!) and added in an entire display of sugary/spicy/chocolatey greatness (I'm still kicking myself for being too late on my way to the airport to get that lemon bar I'd been eying or the pumpkin BUNDT CAKE, ffs. What is wrong with me?) The sweetest owners, the loveliest staff from front counter to back bar to food runners and bussers. I adore Oh My Soul with every ounce of my being.

As many other reviewers have said, I really wanted to like this place but the overall experience…read morewas rough. Service was REALLY bad. You order and get your table number at the counter. Person taking our order was rude. Asked what he would recommend as a side given that we'd never been to the restaurant before. He just listed off all the sides and appeared annoyed by the question. We finished our order and he then cancels the tip screen and I didn't know why. He asks if I want a receipt and I say sure. Then I notice that they have an automatic "service charge" of 15% that isn't advertised anywhere in the restaurant. I'm not necessarily against restaurants doing this but it should be advertised. Also, you should have service if you're going to charge a "service charge." Our service consisted of a counter order and then someone who eventually brought out our food. Water was never even refilled. Vibe of everyone that worked there was angry and aggravated. Multiple people scowled at me walking through the dining room from the kitchen. One worker threw open the kitchen door obviously pissed about something. Everyone in the restaurant was waiting forever for their food and other tables would have one entree come out while the other person at the table waited another 15 minutes for their food. Food was nothing special. My wife liked her Mother Earth bowl which is why I'm giving two stars. My chicken sandwich was something out of a frozen box. Hush puppies and onion rings were standard. We only had water to drink. All of this cost us $54.20 total. Anymore this feels like a standard experience in an American restaurant unless you do someplace high end. Ok food, terrible value, terrible service, and junk fees. Like they're doing you a favor just being there. All of this for a restaurant that, as the walls show, is trying to convince you to become vegan. This won't do it guys. Do better if you really care about bringing people to your cause.

But I will absolutely be back!!! Adie was absolutely excellent in explaining the menu and sharing her favorites! (I gave her a personal to let her know how wonderful her recommendations were) The fries are delicious. Seasoning so so good! I had my mouth set on the biscoff cookie shake, they only had Oreo. I tried it but it was just ok. Highly recommend giving out bigger straws b/c it was a headache sucking that shake through lol. I also would recommend using coconut milk instead of oat milk. It just has an aftertaste whereas coconut not so much. The best thing and the shocker for me and my non vegan friend, was the Carolina Hot dog. It left me screaming and then speechless. My friend even did a happy dance lol. We are contemplating taking another drive tonight before they close b/c I shared it with her as she was too nervous to get it, we want more lol. We both love hotdogs and I can't say that I've ever had a really good vegan one. This was it!!! And honestly can't tell it was vegan from the texture, to the chili, the special sauces, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! And the Philly cheesesteak came a very close second runner up. The bread stood up to the sauces. And they are saucey but I don't mind it at all. Sautéed peppers, onions, the protein...this was just good clean food and not too much processed. As a vegan chef (Mama Nicca's Homemade Things) and someone who loves to be creative in this vegan world of cooking, this truly was OUTSTANDING. I will probably return every time I'm in Charlotte. I'm in PA and I wish we could have this on the coast. In this voice of my sister Tabitha Brown, VERY GOOD!!!

I love that there is seating inside the hall in case you want to hang around and eat. There are also different restaurants in the food hall as well so there is something for everyone ranging from Indian, Thai, and Costa Rican cuisine. Each shop allows you to order from the kiosk and will bring your food out when it is ready. If you place a pick up order it will be in one of the lox boxes waiting on you to pick up. Now to the food! I looked at the menu previously and knew i wanted to try the ribs. I also ordered the mac and cheese and black eyed peas as sides. The meal comes with rice and their vegetable of the day which happened to be collard greens that day. To finish the meal I ordered the housemade hibiscus tea. It took about 10-15 minutes or so for everything to be ready and it was brought out by one of the lovely owners (forgot to grab her name). She was so sweet and came back out to check on me mid meal. Everything was so good. I haven't had ribs in over a decade so that was such a nostalgic taste to me. It had the chargrill taste and everything and that sauce was so good! The "rib" meat had a great taste as well and I enjoyed the meaty texture. The fixins were all really good. The macaroni was nice and seasoned so were black eyed peas, collard greens, and rice. Truly tasted like a plate from an auntie's house. I'm already plotting my next trip to Charlotte so I can make my way back over here. We spotted a handful of vegan spots in the Charlotte area but I am so glad we went with this one.

It's a small dining area with soft lighting, making it very intimate. Nothing was overly loud or distracting and they encourage putting phones away, which adds to engaging with your party. They even still have the 120 year old pews! If you ask your server, you are likely to hear the entire story of the place. It's pretty amazing. They recently received a Michelin recommendation and it's totally deserved. It's a buffet, but most of the hot food is actually served by a person which is something that I particularly appreciate. (I really don't like touching the handles of spoons that hundreds of people have touched.) Some of the stuff is self serve but not any of the hot dishes. Absolutely everything I tried was outstanding. Like everything. There are a few things that they consider "pass around" which means that they are brought over to you by a server at random intervals. For everything else, you just help yourself. I went with a friend of mine who has a deep appreciation for a southern food. He was absolutely amazed. Honestly, I can't think of a better place to have chosen to eat in a short time I had in Charlotte. I've attached a picture of the menu. I tried just about everything. I wasn't disappointed in a single thing, and I was completely wowed by many of them. The servers were wonderful. Very friendly and very willing to talk to us about the history and the food items that were there. Highest recommendation!

As a New Yorker we have our share of markets/food halls and OH fits the familiar script, with a slightly smaller footprint than what I've experienced. What never seems to change is that securing seating can be a challenge because all spots are "prime" real estate and the abundance of choices is an indecisive person's nightmare. Nonetheless, to all the foodies at heart those are just minor details for mere mortals... lol. We managed to grab a larger enough table and everyone circled until we made our individual choices and then returned to our central meeting spot to break bread and indulge in all of our finds. We enjoyed several of the eateries we experienced and I was particularly intrigued by the plant store (albeit kinda pricey). Return is a no brainer especially for the places that were most memorable. Just A Note: Parking is not free, payment is required. Please not depending on the time of day it can be crowded so securing a spot will require patience.
