Stumbling across Board Bard Games after dining at a nearby favorite restaurant was a fantastic find, and I'm glad to know I don't have to drive all the way across town whenever I'm looking for a new board game, some dice, a new RPG book, a pack of [insert your favorite] TCG cards, miniature paints, brushes, and all manner of other gaming geekery and gear! Apparently everyone else in the immediate area got the memo before I did, because the place was *packed* with patrons playing pretend with painted plastic proxies of pistol-packing Primarchs punishing patrols and parties of pan-universal peoples...in this case, Warhammer: Kill Team. Every table was entirely covered with detailed terrain, miniatures, books, cards, tape measures and beverages, surrounded by gamers bent forward in ergonomically-unfriendly hunched positions, guaranteed to cause back problems in the future! It's not the largest gaming space in the city, but they pack a lot of product, and people, into it, utilizing every square inch of their real estate to its fullest. I saw several games that I own, or want to own, and enough of everything any nerd would need for the game that fits their fancy. I was very impressed, and will definitely be back in the future, likely sooner than later, the next time my dice betray me and end up in Dice Jail™.

I have gone a few times over the past year, and have felt the same dissatisfaction each time. With the scarce options in Gresham for games, I felt I should give them a couple chances. The video game selection is meek if that. With the most variety for new gen consoles XB S/X and PS5 (This would be fine if they didn't price things as badly). The sections for "retro" games are pitiful, with laughable selections. Any game you came in hoping to find, they've either priced it way too high in the glass case, or they don't have it. Serious price gouging overall, this can't be stated enough. It feels like a basement selection of games that nobody wants, or everyone already has. They even offer games that no longer have online services, rendering them useless to the buyer, at the same price as when these games released 5+ years ago. Do those games come with a warning before or after you buy them? At one point I was on the look out for an original Wii controller, when I called the store I got such vague answers. "We might have them" or a long sales pitch on their off branded Wii controllers sold in store (surprise! They are horrible quality and barely catch a read on the sensor bar) Surely they know the quality of these second market controllers they are selling/ promoting? Just a waste of money and time. The main attraction of this store seems to be the tabletop gaming. They have many events during the week, and I think that is helping with the overall traction of people going in and out of the place. It can't be their prices or selection! I truly think this place would be better off just pivoting to exclusively tabletop games, or AT LEAST take "retro" out of the name. He wasn't filming anyone without consent, and he's always quick to stop recording if asked. His goal is simple: highlight unique local spots and give them well-deserved attention. What he does is free promotion--something especially valuable in today's economy. As someone who lives in Portland, I'd never even heard of your shop until his video. I was excited to check it out, but the way the filming was shut down--despite no signs posted and no harm being done--left a negative impression. That said, I want to be clear: I don't want to hurt your business. I want to support it. That's why I was disappointed. Gresham and Portland need more visibility and community support, and creators like Klearski help make that happen. He left feeling discouraged, and I believe this could've been handled differently--maybe even turned into a great opportunity. Your staff was kind, and there's no ill will. I just hope next time, the door stays open to creators who are genuinely trying to help businesses like yours thrive.

But when I came back for a visit, the staff as a whole couldn't have been nicer. On my return visit, I had not mentioned until the very end of my visit that I was the grumpy guy who had surgery who was miffed about the NBA players shutting down the store. As soon as I mentioned it, the immediate reaction was nothing but gratitude that I had come back. I simply wanted to tell them how much it meant for them to have taken the time to reach out in the way they had. They had other ideas... They acknowledged that it was the first time they'd ever experienced anything like that, and that it was a learning experience for everyone! the security team with the players were the ones pushing to lock the doors, and at that time, the store being empty, they obliged, not realizing it was going to be a longer visit than originally anticipated. At that time, they then would not allow me to make my purchase unless they were able to apply a very generous discount as both an apology and a thank you, which was completely unnecessary, but incredibly appreciated! Well, I ended up stopping in once more a few days later, but with the kiddos along side this go around. The oldest is now joining dear old dad and transitioning into Magic the Gathering while the youngest has as of this last week fully succumbed to Poké-mania... I wanted to swing by with them and let them pick out a bunch of fun stuff, and to again say thank you to the team there. The store was absolutely packed, so we understandably had to wait outside for minute or two due to safety/occupancy limits. Once we did get in, I noticed that one of the individuals I was standing next to was being helped not to pick out and purchase a bunch of product, but rather because the store was donating a big stack of cards for charity! As soon as it was time for us to be helped, bless the staff, they could not have been kinder and more accommodating to two very excited and very talkative younglings! Ands then as soon as they saw me, the staff and the owner again were not only incredibly excited that I made it back with the kiddos, but again insisted on giving them another generous discount upon checking out! You guys are too much! These guys could teach a master class on customer service! Them providing Not one but two discounts was incredibly generous and very appreciated. However, the thing that really stood out to me the most was the fact that they did so because they really care. Not just about a customer who had a less than stellar initial experience, but more importantly, the community. They see the bigger picture and recognized us not simply as customers, but as part of their community. Quietly donating product to charity, insisting on making sure their shop feels like a safe and welcoming place to collectors and players of any age, and take an immense amount of pride in what they do, not just the owner, but the entire staff... If it had not been for that type of community and sentiment in the early days of Magic the Gathering and over 30 years ago, and shortly after the initial wave of Pokémon, there's no way either of these games would have survived being much more than a fad. I practically lived in my local game store (LGS) growing up both because I loved the game and the community that we put our hearts and souls in the building, but more importantly because it was a safe place for several of us. My home growing up was unfortunately rarely a "safe and happy place," and had it not been for an incredibly kind shop owner and a ragtag group of kids who did no less than pull me into their community, I have no idea what I would've done. It was this community that taught me kindness, empathy, acceptance, and confidence. This is one of the few LGS's I've walked into in many years that gave me a similar sentiment. You guys literally turned a detractor into not just a loyal customer, but an advocate. I sincerely hope that you guys are some day soon, able to expand to a larger location with plenty more room to play, trade, and hangout! I have no doubt it will not only be a very popular place to be, but with you and your team at the helm, it will no doubt be a cornerstone and incredibly uplifting addition to the surrounding community of players and collectors!

Within five minutes of entering the store you'll be screaming "I had that!" as you point at the toys from your nostalgic youth. Not only limited to mainstream popular items such as GI Joes and Star Wars figures, you'll find great items from obscure childhood classics from Toxic Crusaders to Street Sharks (the greatest cartoon show on Earth). Special mention to the owner, a passionate toy lover with a flare for bringing out nostalgic memories while educating you on the history of toy series and entertainment. He made the trip extra worthwhile, as it gave my visit a personal touch. I got three very good condition Street Sharks for the low price of $20. And though I live on California, it is good to know that Dr. Tongue does shipping orders to all over the country. Relive your childhood on this Jawesome toy store.
