Don't hesitate if you are a true lover of all things diners, past and present. We were searching for a place to stop on our coastal route we take to PA and back to VA. My husband stumbled on the Exmore Diner. We can not pass up a diner. When entering there is maybe 18 stools at a bar top, and maybe 6 booths. Small, but quaint. They offer take out, and eat in. This is very much a local place where many are regulars. I absolutely love that! It is a little on the dirty side. But, I can look past things like that in certain things. It's an old diner, mostly original. The menu is not too large. Which is perfect. It is not overwhelming. They have birch beer! Our waitress was fantastic. We had 1-2 come up and assist us. Team work makes the dream work. The food. I was told the specials for the day were popular. I ordered the hot roast beef sandwich with Lima beans, Mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes. My husband classic cheeseburger with crinkle fries and a club sandwich. My children, game and cheese sandwich, and a BLT. Everything was amazing! Just what we were hoping for. My hot roast beef sandwich was fabulous! The gravy was delicious. Take not they add sugar to the macaroni and cheese, so it is in the sweeter side. It was pretty good, just different. I finished my meal with a chocolate milk shake and a Key Lime Smith Island Cake. What... it's not Jan 1, diet hasn't started. Ha! Joking. Both the cake and milkshake were just the sweetness needed. The Smith Island cake is made by a local gal named Becca. She is amazing! Overall, we are coming back especially when we're driving through.

The Exmore Diner is a local favorite. Friendly staff and friendly prices. Daily specials are the key to their success. Great fresh seafood. Great for Breakfast, and dinner. Crab cakes are one of my favorites. Love the old time classic dinner vibe.

Cruising on Route 13 and looking for breakfast, this is your stop. A true diner. Small and friendly with a menu from local seafood to breakfast favorites. Service was nice and fast. Food was good, nothing fancy but just what we needed to fuel our morning. We had the creamed beef special and a crab cake sandwiches. Hash browns are homemade and come with or without onion. Chipped beef was house made and lots of beef. The crab cake was all crab and just a nice fresh roll. Would stop again. $

An authentic old fashioned diner

We found this little gem driving home from Florida and will return annually. The salad with grilled chicken was delicious! Good service in a friendly "down home" atmosphere.

On the way back to NY we stopped by this little diner. I love places like this and do try to seek them out, but this was by pure chance. We had breakfast and it was delicious. Very family owned and ran type feel which I love. Hope to visit it again if it is in the way.

On the way home from Savannah, stopped to eat at the Esmore Diner. Retro style with retro food that was delicious! Steamed shrimp done perfect with butter and old bay to dip them. I went old school...Liver and onions with mashed potatoes and turnip greens. We finished it off with a piece of creamsicle Smith Island cake!

Steamed shrimp

Tucked away off the main drive, rt13, this diner is just the same as it was back in the day. Great local food and fresh vegetables. The employees are friendly. There are only about 10 tables and a counter area wheee you can sit and dine. I had the steamed shrimp, served piping hot. Be sure you have plenty of napkins. I also ordered the green beans and coleslaw. No complaints here. I can see why it is a local favorite. I could barely eat all the shrimp.

that's my sweet mama. She had the shrimp and I had the chicken salad and we got a clam chowder to go. All of it wonderful wonderful.

The food is amazing. The vibe is awesome, and the service is crazy fast. It is the best of everything on the eastern shore.

Simply the best in fresh local food at reasonable prices. Most entrees served platter style with your choice of sides. I had fried oysters, shrimp, collard greens, and green beans. Everything perfectly prepared and full of natural flavor.

Great place to eat. We ate there on our way back from South Carolina. 1 block off the main highway but worth the right turn for sure!

Mallards At The Wharf - Smith Island Cake-Key Lime Cake with Raspberry Drizzle

Exhausted from a long day of travel, we sought a restaurant off the beaten path. We needed a…read morerestoration to make the last leg of what became a 13 hour journey. Mallards at the Wharf is what our GPS directed us to. The GPS just said "Mallards", so we were pleasantly surprised to see it was on Onancock Creek with boats moored adjacent to the outdoor dining deck. The hostess pointed in a vague direction to seat ourselves as she followed, but I couldn't figure out how to get to the deck and had to ask her to lead us. I thought it might put her off, but I was brain-numb from driving for the previous 7 hours. We sat in the shade with an incredible view of the boats and the creek. It was so beautiful that I didn't think the food would matter at all, which is good because it was a mixed bag. I ordered a whisky sour, with house whisky.... Whatever's in the well. Waitress didn't understand what was meant by my order, probably my bad. I was so tired that I couldn't sort my brain. We figured it out and it arrived with a slice of lemon and a slice of lime instead of a flag, so it was sour like a Warhead! We ordered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. The only thing we could taste was the oil they were fried in and the pimento cheese they were topped with. The tomatoes were the thickness of a slice of Kraft American cheese and no larger than the diameter of a Pepsi can. We wouldn't order that again. Ever. We also ordered a cheeseburger, which was lovely, but wasn't served with onion, pickle, or any spread. No mustard, ketchup or mayo. It wasn't something we would order again either. Redemption came in the guise of a swordfish steak. It was grilled to near perfection, moist, flavorful and topped with cilantro microgreens. This was a delicious entree. With it was a lovely, fresh mixed leafy green salad topped with blue-cheese vinaigrette. We wouldn't go back for that dish alone, but we would go back. The menu is appealing, with a variety of seafood. I do recommend it, for the ambiance, and the swordfish. We did order a key lime cake. It was good. Not "inspired", but good. We also ordered a brownie to go. It was hot. We dodnt understand heating a brownie, when the item isn't for immediate consumption? Maybe it was hot out of the oven from being baked. I will learn to sprout cilantro microgreens, because they were excellent. When you look at the high rating, remember the rating is on "your experience", not just one aspect (the food).

Our waitress was delightful, and enjoyed the fact that one of us was her high school math teacher. The desert cake is well worth the calories. We'll be back.

There is a small lot behind the restaurant. It was easy and there was plenty of parking since it was the off season. I did not have a reservation but, I was seated as a party of one pretty quick. The tables were draped with white table cloths, a nice table side light, sweeteners, tall clear glasses with a black napkin and tall salt and pepper shakers. The walls were a darker and lighter gray, hues of black and whites scattered throughout. I was in love with the old photos and the black and white prints throughout. There was a stunning glass sculpture hanging from the center of the dining room. It maybe a Chihuly glass chandelier. If it is not it resembles it. Hues of amber, orange and whites. My waitress came over within a few minutes and took my drink order. She informed me of the specials and brought over some bread, butter and herbed oil. I just had to try the cream of crab. On the menu it states it's a tight lipped recipe. The cream of crab was delicious. They have done their own spin on it. It came out piping hot. It had a slight kick to it, as if there was some sort of pepper in it... jalapeño? Could just be regular ground pepper. Overall, it was pretty good. My meal came with a choice of salad. It was either a garden salad, Caesar salad or tropical salad. I ordered the garden salad with ranch dressing. The salad was ok. Nothing to rave about. It had shoestring carrots, two cherry tomatoes and 2-3 types of lettuce. It did the job. I had the waitress choose my main dish for me. I could not decide. It was between the stuffed shrimp (stuffed with crab imperial), or the crab cakes. I opted for the vegetable of the day which was green beans. My waitress surprised me with stuffed shrimp, broiled. I'm so glad she went with the broiled vs fried option. She said it was the best way to go. The crab imperial was creamy and flavorful. The shrimp were a little on the smaller side. I personally did noThe green beans were nicely seasoned. For dessert I had the waitress choose agin. A choice between their strawberry shortcake which was a special, white chocolate coconut cream pie, or the vanilla crème brûlée. She chose well, the coconut cream pie. It was so good! I saw other tables around me being delivered their food and everything looked really good. This place is definitely a popular eatery. They will remain on the list to come back.

The dinner menu is pretty good and both of our dinners each night of our stay there were excellent. For this reason I have given two stars. It would be impossible to say the same about breakfast. In one location, an 8AM breakfast opening was listed. Our Welcome Letter stated 830AM was the opening time. Neither time mattered, because on both mornings the Breakfast service wasn't even open. The entry to it was locked up like an after hours NYC Subway entrance. Saturday morning no human being could be found. We even went back at 10AM to see if it had opened yet, with no change. Sunday morning it was locked up, but there a woman behind the bar to give our key to as we checked out. On both mornings we had breakfast elsewhere. We stay at the hotel for special occasions, and this stay was no exception. Staying at the Charlotte Hotel and not having to leave it was always something we appreciated and looked forward to during the previous dozen or so times we had stayed there before. Unfortunately, I don't think we will be coming back.

Very attentive staff, and I can't praise them enough. The food was just as great. Meaty crabcakes with little to no filler. I ordered mine atop a salad, which was delicious and fresh. My boyfriend's ribeye was massive and cooked to perfection. Even the rolls for the table were delicious, and we had to bring home the leftovers. If I were a drinker, this would even be a great spot for evening cocktails. Great selection, everything looked great. The smoked old fashions ordered at our table looked wonderful. It was lunchtime, and we passed the Sage Diner, which was packed, so we turned around and decided to stop in. This is not a fancy place, and it seemed like about 99% of the customers were locals. The hostess greeted us and seated us in a booth. Shortly after, a gentleman came over to take our drink order. We both ordered tea. I tried mine and didn't care for it -- it tasted like fountain tea -- so I switched to a soda. For lunch, my wife ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, which came with a cup of soup. She chose the bean soup. I ordered the prime rib sandwich, which also came with fries and a cup of soup; I chose the cream of crab. When the food arrived, it looked pretty good at first. My wife liked her soup, but the meatloaf was extremely dry and had a strange seasoning to it. The mashed potatoes were real, with large chunks of potato in them. My prime rib sandwich special was overcooked and came with cheese. I was expecting thinly sliced, shaved prime rib, but instead the meat was cut very thick -- about a quarter inch -- and was tough. The cream of crab soup was disappointing. The first thing you notice is a heavy spoonful of Old Bay on top. When I dug in, there was barely any crab -- just a few chopped particles, which didn't feel acceptable for cream of crab. I ended up eating the prime rib plain with some BBQ sauce just to get through it. Overall, we don't think we'll be returning. There were a few other places we passed farther down the road that likely would have been a better choice.
