Little did I know that this location is called "Krannert View," most likely for its being across the street from the Krannert performing arts center that takes up an entire block. And little did I know I would be blocked from crossing the street toward the coffeehouse by the Marching Illini university band. This Espresso Royale looks much the same as it did back in the day. The building stands out because it is a stucco/plastered one in an area where other materials are used to clad buildings. Inside, it is definitely unique, with arched areas that might be eclectic, albeit with some Venetian influences. There is a variety of seating - both upholstered and tables with chairs. There is an upstairs mezzanine, but good luck getting up there with your hands full. I remained downstairs. Their baked goods don't have funky names. They have straightforward names and are fairly good. I had a chocolate chip muffin. Not being a coffee or tea expert to begin with, this warmer day called for iced tea. What I'm seeing is that most coffeehouses jack up the prices on one or the other - the beverages or the baked goods to be viable and achieve their goals. The service was unremarkable, meaning it had to have been decent. Just as in the past, this is a good venue for sitting down to socialize or to concentrate. I didn't come in here all that much because it was in a different part of this twin city university area and because it pulled in a different crowd based on the nearby academic units and services. I went in yesterday for a couple of bagels and cream cheese. Before going further, I must praise the schmear! It is creamy and begs to be spread and scooped. The flavor is noticeably tangy which gives it a lot of character. Strong recommend. The bagels were much less remarkable though. They had no crust to speak of, and the flavor was close to pretzel. The dough becomes sweet as you chew and, as a result, it tastes a little incongruous with the sour cream cheese. (Butter may be the preferred topping.) That said, the dough has a good deal of structure and holds up a sandwich easily. Plus, their sandwiches are a much better deal: a bagel alone costs $3 (!) while sandwiches are all under $10 (!). Speaking of which, you should really order a bagel sandwich and sit for a while at the couches. There have been patrons sitting and chatting around the shop on both of my visits now. It is a place to luxuriate over a late breakfast, rather than grab a drive-thru sandwich. The shop's aspiration is to be something like a small-town gay bar for bagels -- in the sense of building queer community over food and drink -- and it hits the mark. As their mug puts it: LGBT is short for "Let's Get Bagels Together." Note: Yesterday was my second visit to the shop. The first was so culinarily negative that I swore off coming back. In a nutshell, I believe that I was sold a box of day-olds, on my first visit, although I did not know that at the time. The bagels were handed to me cold and stale in a prepackaged box, despite my having arrived shortly after opening. Eating six of them was an unpleasant chore. Curiosity and a hope that there was some kind of mistake brought me back to the shop yesterday. It is, after all, the gayest bagel in town.
