This is a long overdue review for this quaint little cafe!
My family and I came up the hill last month for a little pine scented air, cute shops, peace and quite, and to sit on the patio and enjoy great service and yummy food here at the Evergreen Cafe. We have all eaten here before, and each time we make a day trip to Wrightwood we finish our day enjoying dinner here, out in the fresh air.
Our server, Linette, was as sweet as can be, and made sure we were well taken care of from the get-go. We entered the tiny indoor cafe, and were promptly and happily greeted. She politely inquired if we had a dog with us after we requested sitting on the porch (which would allow us to breath in more fresh air and enjoy our last moments in piney paradise before heading back to the concrete jungle). After saying it was just the 4 of us, she informed us there was a new rule that dogs (unless they are service dogs) are no longer allowed on the patio. We picked our favorite seat (the corner street table) and opened our menus. Didn't take long to choose...garden burger and fries for all four of us. We didn't want to experience food-envy lol. The fries here are AMAZING. Get them. Splurge and get a side or ranch too. Pure heaven The burger was pretty tasty too, and filled the plate!
While we were eating an older gentleman and his wife, who got out of their car with their two leashed small dogs, had sat at one of the tables. We knew the dog rule, but we figured their server would inform them since a sign is not posted (it should be though, would save a lot of heartache). Linette very kindly inquired if their dogs were service dogs, which they said they weren't. She then said that there was a new rule, one instituted by law enforcement and not the cafe, that prohibited dogs be on the patio any longer. When they asked why, since their dogs they insisted were good dogs, she replied it was due to a series of recent bitings of staff. Instead of taking the news as it was and finding a new location, or taking their dogs home or letting the dogs sit in the car (which was steps from them and completely visible) with the window down (it wasn't a hot evening), they proceeded to angrily lambaste her...in front of us! We felt awful, it was a total blindside response, but she kept her cool the whole time...even after she apologized to them for the inconvenience, and he said she should be sorry since it affects her tip! And he said it like a threat. Such a rude, bitter man. To make matters worse, after he helped his wife into the car, he went back into the cafe to confront her (I figured he went in to use the bathroom or inquire about a pet friendly restaurant). Poor Linette came back outside after he left to fill our glasses with tears in her eyes. When we asked what was wrong, tears tumbled down her cheeks and she said, "He yelled at me in front of everyone in there. It isn't my rule. Why did he do that?" She even mentioned he threw out leaving a bad review on Yelp. This is another reason why I am leaving this review...just in case that mean man makes good on his threat.
Linette, you are sweet as pie, he was being a jerk, and you handled the situation very well! As to the Yelp review...Mean Man, the Evergreen is awesome, and their servers are too. Don't get angry at the messenger! My only suggestion for the Evergreen? Please post a very clear sign outside on the patio that dogs, even leashed dogs, are not allowed unless they are marked service dogs. This should help shield your servers from verbal abuse
Despite the incredibly rude customer, we really enjoyed our meal and service. Their food is delicious and they never skimp on portions! I have one complaint, but this really isn't the cafe's fault, but one I should mention to anyone planning on stopping by and eating OUTSIDE in the patio. A business a few doors down from the entry door of the cafe has regular employees and customers who smoke like clockwork on the walkway every 11-15 minutes, so our pine scented air was often clogged with super stinky cigarettes. That was the first time I noticed such an issue, but it was a huge concern, especially if you are sensitive to cigarettes, which I am. Despite this, enjoy their yummy food and friendly service inside if smoke bothers you...it's worth the stop read more
