Not a horrible experience however the service, quality of service, atmosphere, overall customer service are not consistent.

This was a 5 star experience at EWC in Fairlawn, NJ at the Promenade Plaza of route 208. I ran out of friends willing to shave my back, and decided to try waxing. I'm one of those hairy guys that comes out of the ocean, gets down on all fours, and shakes like a dog to shed the water, while people nearby complain about getting sprayed. Read too much about men going once and never going back because it was too painful, however, I ran an errand in Fair Lawn, NJ and found myself three doors down from the EWC, and decided to pose some questions. Donya (forgive me if if I misspelled) at the front desk was excellent to work with and we agreed that Tara would do a couple of sample patches on the most traditionally painful locations. Tara was also patient, kind and excellent. The initial pull was uncomfortable but quite tolerable, and the discomfort was gone in less than a minute. Made my appointment with Tara for the next day. Full back! Out of many strips, I'd say a few were noticeably 'on the edge' but the extreme discomfort vanished very quickly. Front desk staff and Tara were wonderful to work with. It all looked fine when I got home, however, later in the day my back itched a bit in one spot and I took a look. Wow!!! It appeared that every follicle spot was quite red, like a giant rash, all over my back. But it was strictly visual. No discomfort whatsoever. Took a quick shower, and checked again before bed and the 'rash' was gone. I did find out that the redness is normal. I will be going back when it gets long again, and hope that Tara will still be there. I regret not asking Tara to take a couple of 'before' pics, because the couple of 'after' pics she took are meaningless without the comparison. I sent one 'after' pic to the last person to shave my back and she was quite impressed, because she knew what the before looked like. Next time we'll take 'before' and 'after' pics. If I hadn't run that errand I probably never would have done this. Between Donya and Tara, I felt welcome and well cared for, and highly recommend the people and the location. I may consider a package from Donya! All of my apprehension was for nothing!!! Try it!! Keep in mind that we're all different... rate of hair growth, pain tolerance, and anxiety! Before starting, I neglected to ask Tara if I reminded her of anyone from her past who bullied or otherwise caused her any grief. She definitely treated me well, so I won't have to ask next time. read more

I give it to stars because the wax wasn't as painful as I expected.however when I got home I was pissed to see so much hair still there when I asked for Brazilian full and butt full. I was so pissed and called my friend and told her what happened and she reminded me that she's no longer a customer of EWC because she's had too many wax specialist do a poor job and that it was always rushed. Luckily, she got me an appointment with her waxer ( who's a former EWC wax specialist ) and currently business owner, do a touch up and a vagacial ( my first one ). She couldn't believe the amount of hair left behind. I'm glad I met her because I have never been so satisfied, I mean it was so amazing that when I finished and looked in the mirror, I wish'd I could leave bottomless and show off my stuff lmao. I went to this location wax center for a Brazilian n I'm in uncomfortable pain for the second day in a row when siting down or walk Not my first time doing that, hence I'm not a drama queen just assume that since they were rushing through appointments it was done with unjustified carelessness. Thought it will go away after day or two but pain is still there and I'm not sure what to do. I'm not sure if I would recommend this wax center to anyone else... I've been coming here for years and I can't tell you how many times I've gone through waxers and front desk girls. I've heard stories from waxers about the company politics and it's amazing how this place is still a running franchise. I'm typically a VERY patient person but when you're coming for an appointment early and/or on time and your waxer is late, your frustration gets the best of you. Having an appointment at 9:45am and not being seen until almost 10am and seeing everyone before you come in and out, is really annoying. Not only just that, but the front desk girls won't tell you they're running behind when you first check in, they'll tell you when you've been waiting for at least 10-15 mins. Unfortunately this isn't the first time this location has waxers that's run behind. I have a friend who goes to another EWC in another location and there never seems to be a problem. I don't recommend this location of EWC. Although I like that they never reuse sticks or wax paper, I hate to Know that I'm always 15-20 minutes behind on an appointment read more

4 stars because Christine is so BOMB. She was the reason why I bought the package of buy 9 get 3 free. I had seen a different technician my first time. Wasn't the greatest experience. I even told myself I wouldn't come back. But I decided to give it another chance and after reading some reviews, I chose to see Christine at my second visit. I'm so glad I did! She was so chill, made me feel relaxed, and it wasn't as painful as the first. I've been going to her ever since. Our talks during the services distract me from the pain. She's very personable, which I love! During my last service, however, I saw Jackie because Christine wasn't in and I had to get my service done before my trip. She was pretty good too! No complaints at all! But I personally prefer Christine, maybe because I've been going to her for a year one and I'm very comfortable with her! I highly recommend Christine!! She's awesome! Okay this was my first time at this location and Paola made my visit a pleasure. She was on time, pleasant, professional, thorough, asked me about my needs and wants, it just couldn't get any better.. I was treated like royalty.... Red carpet was rolled out for me... "I absolutely love it". She walked me through the painless procedure, we had a general conversation about life and afterwards I felt like I had known for at least five years. Now that's the type of person you want/need to make your experience enjoyable. Remember, if you want the very best you have to make an appointment. Well let see I'm only giving 2 stars for the fact that I had walked in and they had open availability for me during this crazy time, I needed a quick eye brow wax and my local European wax center was closing due to the out break, and I needed them. but other then that it was a horrible experience. to get my eyebrows waxed. Two ladies treated me with manners and respect, when I had gotten taken in to get waxed my waxer was nice I think her name was linda? I was on the table talking to her and she was waxing me, remind you I don't ever come to this salon but I was in need of a waxing, the waxing was hurting I understand waxing is never "painless" it's ripping hair out come on. But this was the most pain I was in ever!! My waxer was saying oh are you on any acne medication like accutane? You must be really sensitive, I realized now it wasn't because of my acne cream which I never put by my eye brows or eye lids it's because she burned me, not realizing i was getting scorched by hot wax. I left and realized I had first degree burns only by my mom saying oh my god you have a burn.. Never have I ever been burned at a European wax center I go 2 times a month. I called back and the women who answered told me it was a burn, no apologies, said if it's red tomorrow come back in. I guess you get what you get when your in a rush, burnt skin under my eye brows and no apology. Really hope my eyes heal quickly and painless.. Make sure you ask them to cool the wax. read more

Completely unprofessional workers at the front desk! Will never repeat this location. For the price of their services you would think they would be organized and friendly but its just the opposite here. A family member bought me a student wax pass around $400 as a gift at a different store in Totowa. The lady there told my family member that it was in the system under my name. Well I made an appointment at this locations and right before the appt. I asked to make sure it was in the system, and the lady at the front desk claimed there was nothing under my name. I told her the whole deal that it was a gift and she was completely unhelpful and even told me that "we are a different franchise than Totowa so you have to call them." She did not have the courtesy to call the Totowa store. She even claimed that if my family member bought the wax pass under their name, it would be for them and i couldnt use it...which was even more puzzling because it was an older male who was definitely not a student. Once again she made no sense. Finally, once I call, the lady from the Totowa store now wants to speak to her on my phone and the front desk lady says "i dont think I'm allowed to use your phone, she has to call the store." Once again, completely unhelpful and unwilling to solve the issue. I know it was the center in Totowa's fault, but the professional thing to do would be to call and solve the issue. It was still European Wax Center's fault because they put the $400 wax pass under A DIFFERENT NAME BY ACCIDENT and if the company advertises that you can use the pass at all locations, they should be more accommodating and willing to work with different stores if they mess up big time like this. The lady at the front desk did not care, smile, or apologize. It was so clear that she saw this as my issue and not her stores, when it was actually HER company's fault. Paola is the WOMAN! She came recommended from a good friend so I booked with her. I was SUPER nervous about the intimate nature of my services but she made me feel comfortable instantly. I was going to Aruba for a week and getting groomed was the best thing I could have done to prepare. When you live in a bathing suit for a week who wants to even think about any of that?! Paola is extremely professional and excellent at what she does. If you have any trepidation about visiting EWC for bikini waxing and beyond I highly recommend booking with her. I walk outta there feeling like a million bucks! It's amazing what a little grooming can do. Ladies - RUN do not walk and treat yourself to a visit. This review pertains specifically to their Brazilians, but I wouldn't have a lot of faith in the other services either. This place is the McDonald's of waxing. Standardized service with locations across the country with all kinds of discounted packages for repeat services. $40 brazilians with a new-customer special for $19? I couldn't resist. Unfortunately I got what I paid for in this case. On the plus side, the waxist was very personable and sweet. On the minus side, most everything else. The wax itself is a bit unorthodox. It's applied super-thick, you then wait (waaaay too long) for it to cool and harden and then it's peeled off, sans the cloth strips. Waxes at my usual place take probably 7-8 minutes total. I was in there for 30 minutes today. The waxist was not experienced enough at the "full monty" process either, this despite the receptionist's claims to the contrary when I called to request an appointment, making sure it was someone who knew what she was doing. She seemed to think it would be sufficient to leave what I consider to be a whole lotta hair down there. Um no... So, it took me 30 minutes, an incomplete wax job, $19.50 and yet another failed attempt to get my brazilians done close to home for me to realize that I can't avoid continuing to go into the city every month (Regina @ Maria Bonita or Lee @ Aqua are the best I've found). read more

After a whole lot of research, I decided with this EWC for my first ever brazilian wax. I called the morning of and made an appointment for later in the day. I was informed that because I was a first time customer, my wax would be 50% off, so the total came out to around $22. The receptionist made it clear on the phone that anyone who is more than 9 minutes late will have their appointment canceled and would have to wait for the next available time. So make sure to make it on time or to call them if you're running late! I showed up 10 minutes early for my appointment, so I sat in the waiting area and confirmed some information with the receptionist. At exactly 5:45PM, I was called in to the back room. Everything is so on time here! Ashley did my brazilian wax for me and was very helpful. She explained all the steps she was taking and gave me some tips on how to care for my newly waxed area afterwards. I've never had anything waxed before, so I can't compare this experience to anything else in terms of pain. However, I didn't find the overall experience unbearable (although Ashley told me that I seemed to have a high pain tolerance). I was in and out within 15 minutes! Awesome. Of course, the employees there push their products as well as their packages. I ended up purchasing their Buy 9 Get 3 Free packages for first time customers since I foresee myself going back for more waxes in the future. They divided up my payment into 3 separate monthly payments. I was also informed that I could go to any EWC location in the future. Overall, I had a very positive experience here. I went in for my free underarm waxing today and it went pretty well. It went rather quickly too since they use stripless wax which took out most of the hair in one felt swipe. I can say that this was the best waxing experience I've had so far. They do try to sell their and products and services but I was braced for that after reading some reviews from other Yelpers. At the end of my visit, the girl at the front desk also tried to schedule me for my next visit 4 weeks from today I declined. I wasn't sure if they were going to charge me for that. I'm giving 5 stars because the first girl I had, Kim was awesome! It was my first time getting a Brazilian ever, or anything beside me eyebrows waxed so I was pretty nervous. She really did an excellent job leaving no hair, as well as applying pressure right after pulling off the wax to reduce pain. It was a very pleasant experience. I bought one of the packages, which honestly was worth it. Very clean place, I love the no double dipping which is why I chose to come here in the first place. I had Jessica the second time around, because Kim was not available. I unfortunately was leaving that night on vacation so I had to take whoever was available. I've been going to this waxing location for quite a few years now but it really is a hit or a miss with the waxers. Everyone has been very nice, but the last time I went the waxing experience was horrible. I got a Brazilian wax (which I've gotten many times before) and it was so painful. I could tell when she was spreading the wax there was something wrong with it, it wasn't spreading well and when she went to rip it off it got stuck multiple times! I'm kinda shy and I didn't want to offend the waxer, but these past few days after the wax I am really regretting that I didn't speak up. I have so many red itchy bumps. I think it's time I try a new location as two of the waxers I had in the past who were great no longer work there and now trying new waxers is very chancy. One other time I tried a waxer by random (I specifically asked for someone who had more experience) and they gave me a newbie anyway which I found out while chatting with her that she had just started. The waxer came to get me..did not introduce herself or asked if I wanted to use the restroom (listen I'm spoiled by a much less glamourous place). I was there for a full leg wax & free underarm which she did first. After she applied the purple warm wax, it hardened and I asked how she was going to get it off-which she should have explained the product prior-but I digress. She said she was going to peel it off. I usually get sugaring and its a breeze..the wax this place uses is actually more painful that regular old wax. I was really going to reconsider getting my legs done, but I sucked it up. While the no name waxer was super fast..perhaps too fast-she too was trying to sell me their products - again expected... She was done in 30 mins flat & needed to be told that she forget a huge patch on my thigh and several hairs on my knees. At this painful point-I just wanted to go. I paid $60 w/a 15% tip - I figured that I got the overpriced underarm wax free. But never in a million years would I ever get a Brazilian w/that type of wax. Christine is the waxing specialist that I always book for my waxing needs. She is very professional, polite, patient, and amazing at what she does. Every-time I go to this waxing center I am greeted kindly, and professionally by the staff at the front desk area, which makes me feel quite at home. Wait time is also short, every time I come in I never have to wait a long period of time to be seen by Christine. The room where I receive my waxing needs is kept very clean, and organized. Additionally, when Christine completed a Brazilian Wax and an underarm wax, I felt little to no pain what so ever, which was great because I've had prior situations that were not so pleasant in the past at other waxing centers.I can honestly say that I highly recommend this location, and Christine for every individuals waxing needs. read more

Great expirence...I loved it!! So i really wanted to get a brazilian wax for a while and after researching i decided to go ahead and book an appointment at EWC. This was going to be my first wax ever (well aside from my eyebrows) so i was a little scared and at time anxious. I loved the place clean and the staff are very friendly. I arrived just on time for my appointment and just sat down for maybe 2 minutes and Xiomara called my name . She is very nice i did not feel shy at all she kept me distracted with conversations so i would not be so nervous since i told her this was my first time. I liked how she let me know from the beginning "im not going to lie this is going to hurt but afterwards it would be less painful" she would put pressure as soon as she would rip of the wax. The process was fast and easy 10 mins and i was out. I already booked my next appt for next month and will be seeing her again . I also purchased the body wash she told me is a really good product especially since i use shave; it would make the hair less thicker. I had never had my eyebrows waxed before. It was actually something I feared after hearing horror stories from various friends about bad waxers. I had been going to the wax center for a while, and I trusted my waxer Irina enough to finally try it. Thank god I did. My eyebrows are perfect! Up until then I had only tweezed because I don't have thick brows. OK, the positives - the place is clean, the staff is sweet & polite. My waxer, Paola, was nice enough. Now, the nitty gritty - I went here for a brazilian and I was excited at the prospect of getting this service for a decent price right in my neighborhood. Not only was it incredibly painful (and I've gotten brazilians for about 8 years) she did a bad job. There are random hairs all over the place. I had pieces of wax still stuck to my skin - it was gross. Though the place is clean, the overhead fluorescent lighting was more like a dr's office and actually gave me more anxiety than I normally have. The first place I ever got a brazilian was at J Sisters and, though they are crazy expensive, it is so worth it - you walk out and are proud & happy. Instead, today, I left in pain - with dried blood, red & swollen. Also, they do things totally backwards, they don't get the whole back area which is pretty much the whole point of the brazilian. Go to J Sisters - you will be in and out in 10 minutes, dignity intact and feeling good. I went here initially for their free promotional offer and got my underarms done. It was my first time getting a wax and admittedly it was a bit painful. It felt the same way when I got my full legs and bikini line done. HOWEVER, when I came back for a second round of everything a few weeks later, the waxing was much less painless. My bikini line and full legs were slightly painful and my underarms weren't painful at all. I've been using the same woman, Evelina, since my free visit and she's always friendly and courteous. I've signed up for their packages and continue to go back every few weeks. The receptionists are friendly and quick to answer any questions or concerns and whenever I call to book, adjust, or cancel an appointment they remain helpful and friendly. read more

Do yourself a favor and stay away from this place!!! I've been here twice and after the last visit I will definitely never return. I walked in one Saturday before a trip because I needed a last minute wax. The receptionist was nice and helpful and said someone could see me in 30 min. The waxer I saw, Amanda, was not only COMPLETELY INCOMPETENT, but also very pushy in terms of trying to upsell packages and products. I usually talk to my waxers to help the process go by faster, and 5 minutes into the experience I found out that though Amanda has been working in "beauty" for a few years, this was her FIRST week of waxing. At which point I should have ran out of the room, but I stupidly stayed on to receive the most painful wax ever - at some points it actually felt like she was ripping my skin out! In return for this torturous 30 min, I was left with a completely misshapen triangle (I'm sure this was her first shape) and completely irritated skin... When I walked out to the lobby, Amanda actually tried to hand some ingrown hair product to the receptionist as if I had mentioned I wanted it or agreed to buy it! That was the final straw for me, I told the receptionist how horrible my experience was and left without giving the girl a tip. Since I was not offered any kind of compensation for my horrible experience when I gave the verbal feedback, I wrote to management and later did receive a full refund. Nevertheless, how can you allow someone who just started waxing to work on clients without any supervision?! I refuse to pay $40 to be someone's test patient!!! read more

I came to this location months ago and haven't been back since, I switched to the Edgewater location because this place is just so terrible. The last time I went the lady butchered my brows and I was bleeding and my skin was raw and red and hurt for hours. I don't even have sensitive skin. I looked so terrible. I'm so mad but luckily I have to now go out of my way and go the extra mile all the way to Edgewater. But at least the girl there takes her time as any other cosmetologist should. read more
