Great work and service! I needed a suit tailored quickly for a wedding and gave them a call. He was very accommodating to my timeline and told me to come by. Originally, my jacket was a size too large and the waist of the trousers needed to be reduced about 3 inches with the length shortened a little. Here's the thing. Silvian Nita is a master tailor trained in Europe. There are not enough of them around anymore. When I worked at Nordstrom every sales person wanted Silvian to fit their customers for men's suits, because he was the best. All the toughest alterations landed on Silvian's rack. I'm buying vintage suits because I love the styling of 1989 and the early 90s, and every suit is going straight to Silvian (but only after a dry cleaning because that's how you do this). He's tearing apart and rebuilding a lovely Hickey Freeman, with a Zegna and an Armani to follow. He's the man. You can rest assured when Silvian is wielding the needle. What more can I say? I honestly debated a long time on whether I would write this vs ask for a credit on my order but I decided if I could save someone else from spending the money on ordering a made to measure (MTM) suit through European Master Tailor, it would be a public service. I'll start by saying that Mr. Nita was generally a pleasant person to deal with. However I was incredibly disappointed by my experience with ordering a made to measure tuxedo from EMT. To be honest, it really calls into question some of these other reviews and the veracity of them. I now realize the only other negative review mirrors my own experience in terms of calling into question skill with tailoring. Also, I now notice there are no customer photos. Dubious for a tailoring shop. A lot of the review focus on alterations which is different than having a made to measure suit. It seems simple alterations are within the capability of this shop. However if you have a discerning eye for detail and are looking for a MTM suit, I strongly suggest exploring other options. My experience: Going through selecting fabrics and getting measured was straightforward enough. No issues there. Seem to be quality fabrics. We picked out styles and that was that. About 7 weeks later I was notified that my tuxedo was ready (I'll note that I had to email 2x to get a response.) Putting the tuxedo on for the first time was unfortunately extremely disappointing. Rather than talk through the issues I will list them and show pictures Tuxedo Jacket Shoulder pads with significant gap (see shoulder pad and actual top of shoulder) Arm creases Back creases Shoulder creases Wrong length Cuffs that are not straight (note curces) Poor lining/construction of jacket that shows through fabrics (granted this may have been my fabric selection but I would imagine a tailor should have warned me or help guide me towards better fabric) Pants Wrong length Too wide in lower leg Crotch which is shaped such that it sticks out from the pant awkwardly (difficult to appreciate in photo but very awkward) Tuxedo shirt Far to big in arms leading to creases in jacket arm Too wide in chest Collar that is too big Poor construction with loose threads In reviewing the suit, I was upset. I have an athletic body type and knew off the rack would not work for me. Silvian's response to my critiques of the jacket was that "the suit is constructed well, look how it hangs. The problem is your shoulder shape." I was incensed. Why TF am I paying this much money for a tailor to tell me that my body type is incorrect? Isn't that the point of a MTM suit. I took some pictures (attached to this review) and went home to think. I emailed Mr. Nita to review my problems with the jacket and tuxedo. To his credit, his response was quick and said he would try to address the issues. Naturally, I asked when I should come in to do alterations. His response? "It's up to you, if you want me to work on I don't need you to come and try on." ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?! I lost it at this point. How could you alter a garment without having the client wear it to see how it NEEDS to be altered. I ended up decided that it was clear Mr. Nita did not have an understanding of what it would take or how to fix this tuxedo. I ended up going to another tailor in NE Portland (who asked I not publish his name) but on analysis of my garment agreed that it was poorly constructed and that it was likely Mr. Nita was sending out the fabrics and measurements for someone else to construct. My moral of the story if you are looking for MTM, don't go here. Either go to Indochino to get something cheaper that is closer to being appropriate or spend the extra money to go to one of the established bespoke suit houses in Portland. I'm eating about $600 in alterations on a $1700 tuxedo (that essentially reconstructed by an outside tailor) to tell you this rather than ask for that amount to be credited on my tux. read more

This has been a beautiful experience from start to finish. I was searching for a tailor to make my martial arts jacket from scratch using only a few photos for examples. Even though Sylvian the owner was very busy, he took the time to talk to me and learn more. I shared that this was for a Celebration of Life for the passing of the Grand Master of the Kali Association of America planned for May 1rst. He decided to make it for me. I provided the materials and met with him weekly during April to deliver the trim and association badges. At the fitting he made some minor adjustments and completed the item on time with a day to spare. My boss needed a pair of slacks fixed with a very tight turn around time. I had called around to a few places, explained what a small job it was (fixing a clasp) and asked if I could have the pants back by this afternoon. I was very quickly shut down by every business I called. I then called European Master Tailor and not only did he let me know I could bring the pants in so he could take a look. Not giving me an automatic yes or no, which I find to be a great sign of professionalism. Luckily I'm right down the street so I walked over, showed him the pants, explained why my boss needed them so quickly, he let me know it wasn't quite as simple of a job as I had thought, but that I could pick them up before 5pm. Silvian assured me it was something he could accomplish, no problem. He was professional, courteous, and took the time to squeeze me in. I couldn't appreciate all of that anymore than I do right now! I found Sylvian through internet searches. I wanted to find a real tailor, rather than some shop where no one speaks English and charge dirt cheap prices for often shoddy work. I have been going to Sylvian for months now and I have developed a pretty good opinion about the business. First, anyone complaining about the price is accustomed to risking their garments for discount rates. Some of us are not comfortable risking quality clothing to save a few dollars. I have purchased shirts on sale and taken them to Sylvian to make extraordinary alterations- basically remaking the shirt. Most off the rack shirts do not fit me. I factor in the cost of tailoring to the original cost of buying a new shirt. If it isn't on considerable discount I don't buy it. Second, for those who are upset about the amount of time it takes to get their clothing returned; you are probably used to discount shops. Discount shops often either contract out their extra work or have numerous employees working the sewing machines, while only one or two are making marks and taking measurements. Sylvian is a one man operation. On top of his lack of human capital he is often saddled with very difficult repairs and custom alterations. For example, he is often brought cheap suits by cheap men who want functional button holes sewn into the cuffs. This is according to Sylvian a time consuming alteration. Blame the crappy customers, not the amazing tailor. Finally, speaking with Sylvian recently he told me he was contemplating adding a new employee to help with the easier jobs while he would focus on the more difficult requests. This will greatly increase his productivity and possibly result in a drop in pricing. He is expensive, but he is worth the price. He does take a while, but he is worth the wait. If you go to European Master Tailor expecting Stitches-R-Us prices and turnaround you will be disappointed. If, however, you go to Sylvian expecting quality work for its commensurate value, then you will always be satisfied. read more

Though the reviews here indicated that the typical turn-around time is exceedingly long for such quality work, I phoned ahead and asked if he could hem a pair of slacks by the next day. Note, he asked me if I was SURE I needed them the next day, but when I said indeed I did because I had an interview in SF, he agreed. I arrived to find an impeccable and charming shop. I half expected to see a sign that read "Ye Olde Taylor" over the door to his sewing room where a young apprentice might be in training. Very 18th century - in a good way. I brought in 5 pairs of pants to Sivlian. Three that were being taken in at the waist, hips and thighes, and two that were just a simple hem job. He had me try on each pair of pants with the shoes of my choosing, and suggested were the hem should be. He also made good suggestions on how much to take in on my bigger pants. Two weeks later they were done, $97 dollars. Overall I was very pleased. The work he did was fantastic and fit just perfect. My only complaint was the amount of time he took, but I half expected that. The price seemed a little high, but I have paid very little before and was not happy with the work. I brought in six shirts, a sweatshirt, and three pairs of jeans, for repairs. The items ranged in condition from some that had huge blown out holes, to some more minor stuff. Silvian and I discussed options for each garment, and he quoted me prices for those options. We decided a couple of the garments were not worth salvaging -- but for many, there were options. It did end up being a little bit expensive, but when I came to pick up my clothes (and yes, they called me back right around the time they said they would!) I was glad I did go with European Master Tailor. They did a great job on all of the clothes -- and in a few cases, succeeded in repairs that were desirable, more challenging to execute, and therefor not committed to. For some of the dress shirts, I was surprised to see that the mend was able to be done with such little visual impact, given the size of the rips that already existed when I brought the stuff in. So anyway, it wasn't as cheap as I was hoping, but well worth the money for some great quality repairs. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend, and will return. read more

After taking the measurements and giving me his recommendations, he gave me the price and offer a rush service for an extra fee. I promised Silvian that I would write this as soon as I got back to my desk, as I was just so outdone with the work that he did on my blazer! I had the great fortune of inheriting several high-end clothing items from a family friend, with two of these being black Armani blazers. They sat in my closet for many years, as I wasn't in to blazers until recently. Instead of going out and buying new ones, why not use the ones I had? I tried the blazers on and they both were too big. The blazers gave me a boxy look; the length was too long and the waist and sleeves were too big. I knew it would be a tough job to get done, so I came to Yelp to look for a reputable tailor and that's where I came across European Master Tailor downtown PDX. I knew the price wouldn't be cheap, but what's a few dollars on a timeless Armani blazer? Silvian did his measurements and told me it would be 5 weeks (it was actually ready in about 4) due to the extensive reconstruction the jacket would undergo. I went to pick it up today and when I put it on, I was wowed! I couldn't believe it was the same blazer I dropped off that was about 2 sizes too big! It fit me perfectly and beautifully! I will be bringing my other blazer in as well. Is the work cheap? Nope. Is the work worth it? Yep ... and more! After this experience, I would not dream of taking my high-end clothes to be tailored anywhere else in PDX! I had my wedding suit altered here and they were incredible. I had just gotten my suit tailored buy a different shop and they had no idea what I wanted and made me look like a little boy in an 80's big suit. I took my suit into EMT, put it on, and Silvian could immediately see what I wanted and where the other tailor was telling me no and advising me to do something else, Silvian just listened and helped me figure out what we could do. Silvian is a genius tailor. I brought him a beloved, relatively new favorite go-to dress--a simple but classy design of an eyelet layer with a solid sheath underneath--that desperately needed repair. The dress is a deep blue. On my birthday, upon arriving home after a celebratory dinner with my husband, a dog I was caring for unexpectedly jumped on me and his nails caught hold in several of the eyelets ripping them. I was heartbroken and as a long time dog training professional, castigated myself for not being more prepared for preventing what happened. I've come to European master Tailor several times for simple tailoring jobs. Mostly getting jeans hemmed cause I'm short and think that cuffs look tacky. The owner, Silvian, is a nice enough guy and the shop is always clean. It has always seemed a little pricey, but I dealt with it because of its convenient location right on my commute home. However, today I will be picking up my last pair of pants from European "Master" Tailor (who decided he was a "master" anyways? and I don't think he's European, either). As of today it has taken him TEN DAYS and three phone calls from me to HEM A PAIR OF PANTS. If I had a sewing machine, that's something I could do myself in thirty minutes. Highly skilled tailor. I ripped the crotch in a brand new pair of very delicate cotton/silk pants with no stretch. I took them to EMT and they repaired them and sewed a reinforcement lining in the crotch to prevent the problem from re-occurring. Took my brand new jacket for alteration...three weeks later, they called me informing me that my jacket has a hole. Clearly, the jacket got caught with a sharp instrument. Instead of admitting their mistake, they found every unreasonable excuses. To make matter worst, they wanted me to pay them to fix the hole. They could easily resolve this issue by fixing the hole. I had to leave an exceptional review for such a lost art! I came into this beautiful shop of trades with a very specific alteration and fix. I was greeted right away from a very cheery woman and older gentlemen. Daughter and father business which made me feel even more... I dunno, at home? You don't see such shops and trade jobs such as this, let alone with such a personal family touch. Anyways, I had this reversible bomber jacket which was leather on the outside and flipped to a fox fur inside. I absolutely love this jacket and was so sad to see the fur side has slipped a seem and needed attention ASAP. I brought it in and they gave it such precious tender care and really put in the time. If anyone doesn't already know, true fur is extremely difficult to work with, especially one of a vintage nature. The skin is usually a little more dried out and not as pliable compared to being freshly made. I came back in a month and it was in a flawless state of conditions I couldn't even tell where the original tear had been made. Again, it was given with such joy from the daughter and father duo, they were genuinely happy that I was so happy. And how could I not? It was exceptional work at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend his beautiful atelier if anyone has a mishap with a loved garment. You will get exceptional work done, served with the best customer service I've gotten in ages. I am Very, Very disappointed in the work I've had done here. First I came in with a J-Crew suit for him to tailor the pants and the coat. The pants turned out fine, but the coat developed large ripples on the tops of the shoulders. After many trips from Hillsboro (where I live) to downtown he was never able to fix the ripples on the top of the shoulders. He said that I needed a size larger suit coat. However, the ripples were not there off the rack. Ultimately, I literally threw away the suit coat he worked on, bought a new suit coat (in the same size) and had another tailor work on it from the start. It came out great with no ripples on the shoulders. Luckily this suit was "cheap." However, on my more expensive Raf Simmons suit I was having him alter something. In order to do that he tried to take out the seat of my pants. After multiple trips back and forth, the seat now has ripples on it. He wanted to try some more, but I grabbed the pants and took them. I can't afford to throw these pants out, so I will take my business elsewhere from here on out. Very disappointed! Oh how I miss my tailor back in LA. After so many glowing reviews, and people saying this was the best tailor in town, I can't say how disappointed I am. read more
