This is Justin Machus' 3rd Brick & Mortar Store. My first experience with his retailing skills was Local 35 (on SE Hawthorne) which opened in 2003 and closed in 2011 after a successful 8 year run. The 2nd Boutique was located East Burnside and closed in 2021, which makes ~10 years there. Machus has now crossed the river to the West side, which is arguably both a retail and cultural evolution. I'm really not the body shape (or style) that Machus appeals to, but I've been happy with my purchases "around the edges". That usually involves shoes (particularly Solomon) that I've been lucky to snag online via their occasional "Sale on Sale" promotion or travel-related goods like Porter. I also wore a temporary ring I purchased here during a time that I had lost my first wedding band. This time around, I was in town and stopped by the new store. I found a great pair of "gym shorts" on sale that fit me very well. I also had a chance to visually confirm a few items (Solomon again among others) before making a purchase decision. As well as the online store features Machus' items, there's nothing like sight and touch in person. I also took a spin around this well designed and curated store for good measure. Went here looking fot a specific Rick Owens jacket, but when I entered, no one greeted me or offered to help the whole time I was browsing. There were about six employees (which seems excessive for such a small store) just sitting on the counter/checkout chatting it up and laughing and paying no mind to any of the customers. It wasnt just me, there was someone waiting by the changing rooms and they ended up just trying on the sale rack outside of it. Sure, any of us could go up and ask for help, but the employees seemed very unapproachable, and it felt like they were just ego-ing anyone that came in. It turns away serious buyers when no attempt is made to help out, and makes it seem like they assume you just can't afford anything. The selection is pretty small as well when it comes to brands. Ive had good experiences here in the past, but unfortunately it seems like this place has really gone down hill. read more

It was Thursday @ 2:30pm and I needed a bad they had in stock delivered to me (in Southern California) by Friday. I called and spoke to Justin (I believe it was Justin, if not, sorry for the wrong person) and he quickly jumped into action giving me overnight quotes over the phone, even stating he would walk the item to UPS himself if he needed to. This is like one superior artisan cheese store. Ok, they don't sell cheese nor the store does smell like it. I don't even know why I made such analogy. They sell nice, well made, and artisan like clothes and accessories. And when I say well made, prices comes with it too. ;) Don't despair, they always run sale. The sought after brands and fabrics they use goes affordable more often than not. Due to the size of the store, the items are limited to the basic colors, classic styles, functional yet modern fit. Some of the staff (depends on what day you go) can be mildly off-putting if you are not as stylish as they are, but go in with a level head and you'll walk out feeling much more confident. I love this place for a few reasons. 1) Excellent service. My Dad and I came in here over a month ago and the gentleman working, I believe his name is Tim, spent at least an hour with us helping my Dad to find the perfect pair of denim. He was very helpful without being at all pushy and had the best advice in regards to sizing and various brands. Flash forward to today, I go in to buy my Dad a last minute Christmas present. Tim, not only remembers exactly what my Dad got last time we were in but he also remembers my Dads build and size. Tim knew exactly what sweaters and zip ups would fit my Dad. He even remembered which one I had mentioned liking during our last visit. Given that we have only come in ONCE before, I was stunned! This gentlemans attentiveness to his customers is a huge reason why we will continue to shop at this store. 2) The clothing is really great quality. My Dad loves the jeans he got there-I feel like they are the type of jeans that will last a lifetime and they only ran him about $100! He has worn them both numerous times and they look new. And he wants more! I especially like these jeans because they are slim, without being skinny and the denim that he bought doesn't have a brand, which is really nice for those who don't necessarily want to flash around that they are wearing G Star, Rag & Bone, etc. Plus, without a brand/logo, the jeans run less than $100. I wont bust balls as hard as David M did, but I will say I echo his sentiment. Machus has been open for a little over a year now but seems to still be trying to find its voice. Im unclear what lifestyle this store is selling. Are we super modern high end or are we northwestern built tough. Further, the womens section is very confusing to me. There is a small collection of mostly very modern expensive pieces with little to tie it together with. Was the idea after Local35 to just sell more expensive clothing? I feel the identity of the store needs to be clarified utilitarian or ary-ultra modern. In both cases the showroom feels very cold and exposed which can be the difficulty when struggling with a modern asthetic. If I could wave a magic wand, I would want more warmth and better selection in the women's section. As it stands I know to expect the pricetag to be huge but I would love to see the garment actually be worth the price. read more

I recently went there and guess what...most of the nudie jeans were HALF off!! I was super excited and bought a few pairs. I think the decision of the owner to focus on a slightly higher-end market was a good decision. Before only focusing on this location I do believe the owner also ran LOCAL 35 over on Hawthorne. Even tho they're like family to me, in a serious unbiased opinion this is the number 1 place in Portland to shop for men's clothing and accessories! I love fashion and I respect every unique designer even the ones that I don't really like to wear. There's nothing better than wearing a handmade piece made by nid de guepes, in Paris, France, along with a cotton Machus Keller tee that feels like silk and never loses its finish! And I love designer like givenchy, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang, etc. but when the pieces are very close to the same design but designers like siki Im are using better quality fabrics and are selling them at least 50% cheaper it only makes sense why you'd want to shop at Machus! Machus is a new minimal clothing store for men and women from Justin Machus of Local 35. Machus is a little higher end, while still maintaining Local 35's traditions of killer sales and deals for people on their mailing list. Almost all the clothing was neutral, black, brown, navy, grey and white when I stopped in. There is a greater variety in women's sizes than Local 35, while the mens runs to my narrower body type. There has definitely been thought put into the fibers and textures. There are also some unique jeans lines. There are accessories, and a small selection of shoes. The space matches the store. It's in one of Portland's most forward architectural efforts, the Bside6 building, adjacent to Mirakutei. Machus is one of Portland's best options for fine men's clothing in the realm of sweaters, shirts, jackets and jeans, and they have women's clothing too! A friend who's a Portland native and close to the couple who owns this shop took me here on my trip to Oregon last Spring. This shop is by far one of the edgiest and stylish boutiques in Portland. I bought some perfume that contained very exotic ingredients including bulls blood (myth or reality, I dare not inquire) given the inspiration was one of the bullfighter, that I still get compliments on when spraying. Like other reviews stated this is the best men's fashion boutique in Portland. Customer service is what sets this place apart from every boutique I've been to. Case in point I stopped by during thanksgiving break to buy a couple pieces from ADYN and the owner's wife Juline as she rang me up applied their thanksgiving sale discount a couple days early. I am from Lincoln, NE and had previously bought a few things online which judging by their packaging lead me to hold them to a high standard which they exceeded when going there in person. As a fan of nice well made clothing, I find myself shopping in this store about 90% of the time I go shopping. There really isn't another store selling this kind of merchandise in town. I don't buy something every time I shop here but it is always a great experience. I am not sure whats up with the bad reviews about Machus, they seem to focus on cost only. If you can't afford it, how does that warrant a bad review?. Thats like going to the movie, and then reviewing the price of the ticket. Anyway, I have been a customer of Local 35 since it began and was very excited to see the new vision that the owner, Justin Machus was creating. The clothing, like the space is minimalist and thats a great thing. I have had nothing but great buying experiences in this store. Justin is obviously a man who cares about dressing the world a little nicer, one designer at a time. Having recently moved from Portland, I am very excited to be able to shop and purchase on line. After all is said and done, if you like style and want to experience what a real specialty store is supposed to be, then give Machus a try. I was first introduced to Machus through a friend, and I was thoroughly impressed to see what they have to offer. Every time I've walked through their doors, I've been greeted by a warm and helpful staff. The clothes are of high quality, but that does not mean that they gouge you over their prices. I was fawning over a brand called Rivieras online, and I was deeply disappointed that they charged so much for shipping. I tried other retailers, and couldn't find the brand anywhere. You couldn't imagine my surprise when I walked into Machus and saw they carried it. I am an ardent believer of "you get what you pay for," and Machus is worth every penny. read more
