This guy is a major asshole. I went to him with my girlfriend to get her coat tailored, he gave her a quote, she said it was too expensive and he immediately freaked out basically told us to get the hell out of his shop. Have never been treated as rudely as a customer before. read more

I made my appointment on line for 9am. arrived early and waited. Another gentleman from the building let me in at 9. I dragged my walker up the stairs (2 flights) and waited till 9:10. I called the phone # no answer but left a msg that I was there. At 9:13 I dragged my walker back down the stairs, and sat in my car till 9:30. Still nothing. I've gone back home, it's now 10am, and still nada. Highly disappointed. From the looks of other negative reviews I'm pretty sure I'll get a "stay cool man". I brought in a pair of jeans to get hemmed because I have short legs and the inseam was a 34. These were expensive raw denim so I wanted to keep them nice for a bit. I wanted a 2 inch fold up cuff. This was discussed with the proprietor. A pickup date was set for 18 days later. The shortest turn around time was 15 days. I picked up the jeans. A second fitting, to check the fit, was not offered. When I did check the work I initially thought that no work was done. There was over 5 inches of pants that remained. (see photo). Then under closer inspection I noticed that the hem was crooked and a different color from the other stitching. Lastly the stitching was a single stitch instead of a chainstitch. Make sure you get an estimate before he does the work. I had him patch a cigarette burn in a comforter without discussing the price beforehand. It took him 15 minutes. When I asked what I owed him, he said $30! I scoffed and paid him, then he tried to keep me there to hear him sing one of his songs. Luckily, it wouldn't load on his tablet . Never again. read more

About a year ago I bought a couch off of Facebook market place, it was a good deal but one of the cushions was tearing so I took it to Earl who was able to replace the back panel of the cushion with a sturdier fabric and fix the tear and zipper for me. He did such a wonderful job that of course I called him again today to help fix two pillow cases with a busted zipper and a pair of overalls I ordered online that should have NEVER passed quality control inspection. But being a plus size broad it's hard to find overalls that fit my body and don't cost a small fortune. I was able to take my 3 items in today at 1:30 and pick them up at 3! I have never been treated with such rudeness by a professional in my LIFE. I was referred to the Sewing Man by friends in the area and was shocked by the disrespect I received. I was asking a simple question about his business and he raised his voice at me, telling me that I need to make an appointment or stop waisting his time. When I asked him to explain why he became so irate out of nowhere, he told me that he didn't want my business. All I did was ask if he had a lot of projects on his plate and if he was open to taking an expedited job, that I WAS HAPPY TO PAY A PREMIUM for. I understand that you need to make an appointment to assess if you can take the job, but, don't yell at a potential customer. I called another location asking the same question and was treated with kindness. The job will be done IN TIME TOO! I've made sure that all of my friends that referred me know what happened. I don't leave bad reviews, but this was bad enough to do so. read more

Earl is truly a treasure. Super sweet guy who knows his stuff. I had a small, but important, sewing job I needed done. He works by appointment only, but was able to get me in the same day I called, then kindly finished the work while I waited so I wouldn't need to make a return trip. The price was so reasonable that I offered him extra. Important Note: he doesn't have a storefront so you can't go in without an appointment. His website has online booking. read more

I brought in what I thought was a somewhat complicated dress with a lace overlay that I wanted to be shortened and more fitted. The restructuring of the skirt was done quickly and is perfect... the dress now fits like a glove. Highly recommended -- your clothes will be perfectly tailored! Earl is a sewing technical and creative expert. He is my go-to tailor...also has an amazing sense of humor Pants! and outlook on life, which has made my 30+ visits over 4 years very enjoyable. Quality is excellent. Pants! Excellent hems that stick, creative solutions to manufacturer defects, changing annoying button-fly pants to zippers, making wide legs more skinny. Have never had a tailor this talented. And have only seen this level of talent in a pattern or production sewing and assembly facility. Recommend for personal and professional projects! read more

Earl altered a pair of leggings, nice wool pants, and a wool dress for me. He was very funny and personable when I met with him, and immediately put me at ease. He asked when I'd like to pick them up, and I choose 1 week later, and booked the appointment on my phone right then. They were finished right on time, and looked really, really professional. This place is pretty great. I'm glad that the increase in online ordering has been able to help out local alteration shops like this one. Earl was super nice and wanted to make sure that my garment was pinned correctly so it would fit in the best way possible. Really the only thing I think this place could improve on is the time it takes in order to complete items. I had to go back a couple times over a few weeks to check on my dress. They also said they would call me when it was done, but neglected to do so. I'm going to chalk this up to them being a bit behind due to a change in staff and a family tragedy. The next time I am in need of having some clothing altered I'll be heading back to Earl's shop. They really do some quality work here. read more

He did an incredible job on my husband's suit for our wedding a few weeks ago! Not only was he SUPER personable, he was able to tailor the suit to exactly what my husband needed. He chatted with us about our wedding and found things about the suit that even we didn't think to do. Not only that, but he was able to rush the alterations so it would be done in time. Side note: because he's so friendly, he was able to help us while still attending to walk-in customers. I don't know how he did it, but he was great! Also, he does make you pay up front, but I am almost certain that if his alterations weren't what you expected, he would refund you. He's just that kind of a guy. read more

Earl is amazing. I dropped off three of my favorite coats and he did an amazing job tailoring them. It was an involved project and I was a bit nervous but they were expertly done. He does take longer than most places but I don't mind because he's friendly and takes the time to make sure it's done right. Wow I am elated! I brought in a dress I wanted to wear for my birthday that wouldn't quite zip up. I went in for a consultation to perhaps let it out. When I brought it to Earl he zipped it right up. I couldn't believe it fit I just couldn't zip it myself. He installed a hook and eye at the top of the zipper to make it a bit easier for me and offered me an hour of sewing lessons included with my consultation when he heard I was interested in sewing. I had lost my former alteration shop to the business closing, but still needed some patches attached and repairs done. After a quick research of sewing needs online I came upon "The Sewing Man", and the title couldn't be any better. Earl is not only an accomplished seamstress, he is a great human being. On my last trip to pick up a couple of items, I walked into his apartment to the amazing smells of Jamaican food. I commented on the feel of being in Kingston, and Earl responded with " Well let me fix you up a plate"....I left with two meticulously finished sewing repairs and a container full of fantastic jerk chicken/beans and rice! My experience dropping off my items with Earl was positive; he's a friendly guy. However, that was six weeks ago, and I still don't have my clothes back. I've been utilizing tailors for the last ten years or so, and I've never had one take more than a week or so to return my clothes to me. After waiting a month, Earl told me that I could pick up my four items last Friday. He then called me that morning to tell me that he "wasn't going to make it". I asked if he'd have everything ready by Monday morning (five days ago, six weeks after my initial drop-off), and he said "absolutely". When I showed up on Monday, I learned that in fact my clothes were not finished, and that Earl had gone on vacation. Two simply hemmed dresses had been completed, the cape that I had him put a lining into suddenly was way too small, and the coat was nowhere near done. The person working there in Earl's absence promised to have everything completed for me by yesterday, and I've still not received a phone call from her, nor has anyone returned my call from this morning. Earl is the best. I brought in a dress on Tuesday late afternoon that I needed to be in a wedding on Saturday. I had ordered the dress online at the last minute and it didn't fit right but I really liked it. Earl pinned and marked it and when I came back on Saturday it was done and fit perfectly. I couldn't have asked for better service from a better sewing man. Earl's shop is a great neighborhood spot in N. Portland, but also worth the trek across town. In my case, I had moved from Portland to S. California and was back on my first visit, so I picked him because he was in my old neighborhood, he got great Yelp reviews and when I called he said he thought he would be able to alter my dress on my short timeline from when I flew into town until the wedding. I'm a vocalist in a local band, and I cannot sing Earl's praises highly enough! He's always been so gracious and accommodating with my last-minute alteration requests. Earl's work is meticulous, fast, and beautifully crafted. Several of my costumes have required some pretty major overhauls, and his solutions are always so clever and functional. (I'm sure he's saved me from a wardrobe malfunction more than once!) Beyond that, he's such a pleasure to work with. More often than not, I end up staying while he works because he's so much fun to hang out with. And to top it all off, his rates are incredibly reasonable. My husband needed his pants taken in at the thighs and hemmed. We didn't know where to go, I found Earl in yelp and called to leave a message for a consultation. Earl promptly called back and scheduled me in the same day. When dropping off the pants Earl said it was an easy fix and got to work right away. He finished the job in 1.5 hours and we left with the finished AND pressed pants. I've never met such a happy/genuine person like Earl before.
