Andrew's responses were friendly and prompt -- even on a Sunday -- and he scheduled his handyman, Derrick, to perform the requested tasks within several days of our introduction. Derrick was punctual (he buzzed our apartment at 10:01am for our 10:00am appointment), was thoughtful in his work (he offered excellent suggestions when I was undecided about the placement of certain items), troubleshot issues (like when we discovered that The Container Store -- or I -- had calculated the wrong length for the Elfa Easy Hang Standards), and maintained a genuinely friendly demeanor over the course of 7 solid hours of work (despite working straight through lunch). He took his time with meticulous tasks, but I never once got the sense that he was lingering. They ruined my shades, broke a vase, got paint splatter on so many things. I already have 4 cracked shower tiles-it happened the week they finished. They didn't level walls, or tiles or use spacers. They didn't trowel thinset. Grout lines are below standard width. Now I have to sue him to get money back for a redo.

Al (owner and worker) scraped the walls and plastered the entire place except for the bathroom and kitchen which were in good shape. He painted the entire apartment. He gutted and installed a new shower stall and re did the internet cable so it looked great. He did other stuff as well but those were the major pieces. My wife and I live 250 miles away in Washington DC so hiring a contractor for our project in Brooklyn was intimidating as many of the quotes we got were from contractors who were hostile or hard to work with. When we found Al we knew we hit gold. He did an amazing job on every front. And when he made a mistake, he took care of it at his cost. This only happened a couple of times when his guy broke the shower handle and they took off the picture hook molding by mistake. All gave us regular updates and moved the project along quickly. I can't say enough good about his attention to detail and his desire to look out for our well being. I am sad that he works so far from our home as I would hire him in a heart beat to do all the work we need on our 100 year old house. Often he would suggest better ways to get something done. Such as the plastering. They gave several coats of plaster and used a mesh so that these walls would last another 30 years if not more. He redid the shower stall when it did not look exactly perfect. He got the job done on time and within budget and with renovation there are always surprises. He just took care of them and was so friendly and communicative. He rocks! He lives his word and is totally trustworthy. I told Al my wife and I would give him references if he ever wanted them from us. When we first started to talk to him he gave me four folks to call and all had great things to say about him. He is not the cheapest and he is not the most expensive, he charges a fair price that made me feel great about paying him. Your friends may tell you to pay less or that it should not take so long. And I can tell you from experience the end result is the only metric for success in a project where you are taking apart a 70-80 year old apartment and bringing it up to speed. For example when they dug out the old shower he found leaky pipes. He could have ignored it and just did what we paid him for, but for another 600 dollars (which our building will pay for) he made sure it was fixed and saved us thousands of dollars down the road when another contractor/plumber would have to dig it all up and do it again. He always consulted with our super to make sure everything was done to the buildings specification. Al was at the job site doing the work most of the time. He is a skilled worker and not just a manager.

Their pricing was very competitive, and the quality of work exceeded expectations. They did thorough prep work, including power washing the entire house along with scraping and sanding where needed. They also applied primer where appropriate and finished with two coats of Benjamin Moore paint, which really shows in the final result. They even took care of replacing damaged shingles, which was a huge plus. The crew was punctual, very pleasant, and paid great attention to detail. Any questions or concerns were addressed immediately, and they made sure everything was done right. The house looks amazing. Frank is a scam artist. After regrouting our bathroom, he touched up the grout with a DIFFERENT…read moreCOLOR grout than he originally used, so random spots have darker grout. There are gaps in our grout which we didn't have before he regrouted, and they were never filled in. He damaged our toilet seat, when he was not even doing work to our toilet. He left clumps of grout in places that were not cleaned, he clogged our sink & tub drains with grout, and left our apartment a complete mess. Not only is his work poor, but so is his work ethic. He had estimated the work in our bathroom would take 1 day. Instead, he spent 4 days working, only for us to wind up with what was still a completely terrible, unprofessional job. He was often hours late with no communication. When we expressed our dissatisfaction with the work done, he came up with multiple excuses -- he wasn't feeling well, he was supposed to have a different technician helping him, our walls were tough, etc. None of those are excuses for why the grout was touched up with a different color... and if he wasn't feeling well or didn't have proper help than he should have rescheduled. I think the pictures speak for themselves. This is just a small sample of what his finished product looked like after 4 days of work. We asked for a partial refund and he ghosted us. Do not work with him. He talks like he knows what he's doing and then this is the work he leaves you with.

However, the work that Frank did in our apartment isn't holding up well and I am noticing areas that were sloppily done. We found Frank to be messy and incredibly unprofessional. He also left a stain on our wood floor in our entryway from god knows what. I should have just gone with a contractor and paid the extra $$ to replace the tile. I'm mad at myself for not going with my gut and getting rid of him after the first consultation, but I gave him a chance. Awful work. AVOID.
