We were traveling to Australia from the US to visit friends and family, brought a travel car seat…read morefor our 15 month old with us. It had been drilled into us in the US that children should be rear-facing in their carseat until at LEAST two years of age (some Australian friends told us they went forward facing from 6 months of age- rear facing until 2 is not a legal requirement in Australia.) Fortunately, both the cars that we were able to use for the first part of our trip in Melbourne and Sydney were European cars, and had the "iso fix" or LATCH (lower anchor) tethers. When it came time to return to Sydney Airport for our next flight, however, we had to make our own arrangements. Realizing that few cars have the LATCH tethers in Aus, we decided to try for a limo, rather than a taxi, hoping that car would have them. While I requested them, lo and behold when the limo turned up there was no way to safely secure the car seat (EITHER rear or forward facing)- Australian car seats are installed in a different way to those in the states- they tether high rather than low and seam to have a different base. Getting slightly panicked, my friend in Melbourne recommended Bubs Taxi. While it wasn't cheap, it was worth every penny (cent?!) They asked how old my son was, I explained I wanted a rear-facing seat, and we were picked up promptly in a beautiful Audi SUV, with an impressively securely fitted seat. Our minds were able to find peace, knowing our son was secure, and he drifted off to a blissful slumber on our smooth ride to the airport. Plus the driver was very kind, friendly and courteous. What more could you ask for? Highly recommended.

Warning to Visitors in Sydney, Australia: My Experience with GM Cabs…read more On March 11, 2025, I checked out of my hotel and was persuaded to take a GM cab. I had already booked a ride with DiDi (a rideshare service similar to Uber), but the hotel staff assured me that GM Cabs would cost about the same and was available immediately, so I wouldn't have to wait. Trusting their advice, I took the GM cab at 6:20 AM to the airport, which is 11 kilometers away. My DiDi fare was quoted at $41.00, so I expected the GM cab to cost no more than $45 at most. Upon arriving at the airport, the meter displayed $41.95. When the driver asked if I was paying by cash or card, I chose card. To my shock, I was charged $71.25 instead. I immediately emailed GM Cabs to report the issue, but to my dismay, they never responded. Warning: Avoid GM Cabs when visiting Sydney. Instead, use reputable alternatives like 13cabs, DiDi, general taxis, or public transportation.

Then the meter was rolling so fast on the motorway but then noticed as we were at a stop at a intersection, the meter was still rolling as fast like we were on the motorway. As I got to my destination, he added another 12 dollars on top and said "that's my tip you uave to pay".....this is Australia. You can't pull stuff like that here. 150 in total for the ride. Was so mad when I got home and I compared the price if I used uber, it would've been 42 dollars on Uber. Lesson learned. No taxis for me ever. Especially gm cabs

I arranged everything online and quickly got a personal note back from the owner (who turned out to be our driver) to confirm the pickup details. Nigel showed up at our arranged spot at our arranged time and proved to be more tour guide than shuttle service. After he packed our group and loads of luggage into his roomy van, he headed for the airport. pointing out interesting sites and landmarks along the way. When we mentioned that we had hours to kill at the airport before our international flight, he suggested taking a leisurely route through Sydney's interesting neighborhoods, and along the coast to well-known beaches and hidden coves. By the time we arrived at the airport, Nigel had given us a not-in-the-guidebooks (complimentary) sightseeing tour that convinced me I must visit Australia again. Auztranz will be my first choice for all transportation and sightseeing; hopefully Nigel will be available for a multi-day tour of New South Wales.
