Just spent a rainy, sunny, hailing, windy,balmy afternoon with the finest bartender (Joan) and delicious drinks to warm the soul after the winds of the cliffs nearly swept us off to sea. I first visited in 1994, and though there have been several owners since, it remains a magical place. I opted for the vegetarian plate but was told the fish I was looking forward to was out so they substituted cod. Mine was okay but very under seasoned. My girls opted for just a plain pasta dish which they liked but it is hard to mess up penne pasta and red sauce. The plating was beautiful but the food didn't live up to the hype. The propritor, Mr. Stack, was a genial man who seemed to know know his customers and there was great banter and fun, some of which went above me as I did not understand the accents or local nuances. Mr. Stack had a genuine welcome for me and my wife and I thought he was the most courteous landlord I met during my Irish trip. This was a no frills, traditional pub and the 'ladies' was in the private section of the house-- ie, the family bathroom! The Guinness was the best we had in Ireland, and it was the cheapest. Last year when we visited Ireland, we stopped in Ennistymon. We were dismayed to discover the pub is now a shop and that Mr. Stack had passed away.
