Meat Combination and Nene'wee with items 1-5
    Blu M.

Meskie's is so good! My friends and I hit this spot up since it was in close proximity to us and we were not disappointed. We were seated super quick and the guy who took our order was really nice! We sat outside in the back, which was really cool. Did not even know it was back there! We ordered the meat combination which has beef, chicken, and lamb for the proteins, and the nene'wee with yemisir wet, yekik alicha, gomen, tekil gomen, and engudai wet. These were a variety of lentils, peas, collard greens, cabbage ad potatoes, and mushrooms! The food comes one a huge plate all together served atop a huge piece of injera bread (an Ethiopian style sourdough flatbread). We also got a couple baskets of injera to eat with! We all dug in and everything was delicious. My personal favorite items had to be the doro wet, yemisir wet, and the engudai wet. This was chicken, red lentils, and mushroom stews. The flavor is difficult to describe and I cannot compare it to many other cuisines, Truly unique and so delicious. We obliterated this meal so fast. If you have not had Ethiopian food before, give it a go! It is amazing and there is a lot of variety. We all loved this spot and will definitely return.

Planned to take a picture before eating but forgot about that when Samboussa was served :-)

Almost perfect! Service was very nice and attentive. Our waiter brought us extra injera without asking and he was so friendly. Our vegan combo which we chose 5 of them(no. 2,4,6,7,10) was super tasty. I love the &string bean the most. We also got sambussa but it looked so oily so I didn't taste it at all. Also got a parking spot right in the front. The only complain was the cleanliness...... the front of the restaurant was so dirty as well as both restrooms.

The food was delicious!! It was also nice to go to a restaurant that had more than the B standard 5 choices. They didn't have tofu tibs which was disappointing. Our server was good but it wasn't clear if we pay from our table or at the counter. It was a little quiet on a Friday night but the food was solid!

The food is good especially the sambusa and the dip it comes with. The portion sizes are great. However, in my last visit, i was a bit disappointed since the menu prices and the actual prices on the bill seem to differ (tax was separate added to the total). When i asked the cashier about it, she had no explanation as to why.

I came here with two of my friends and we ordered two dishes family style, safe to say that the food was more than enough for the 3 of us! We absolutely loved it, and I was surprised to see such a large vegetarian section of the menu, it was very inclusive of dietary needs. The service was also good, we went a quiet/slow time and the waiter was very nice and checked in multiple times with us. The ambiance was also great, it's a very cute restaurant with a lot of nice art pieces.

The food is by far the best Ethiopian I've tried and I've been to several in Oakland, Berkeley, and all over the Bay. Their chicken is cooked to perfection with a variety of juicy and crispy bites and the atkilt wet (green beans and carrots) are a family favorite- even the kids love it! My son goes crazy for their shrimp and their injera is made fresh daily! Cool outdoor area where the kids can be themselves and not worry about disturbing others! Always come back!

Appears that they have new owners and the service had gone hill so we pivoted to Barcote. We've been here before but that was 2 years ago. Had a great dinner here so I was hopeful! And they delivered! When we walked in, we smelled all the amazing spices. Lots of beautiful Ethiopian decor inside. So much to take in! There was an event on the patio, so we sat inside. The best food here! We ordered the beef samosas, the ultimate veggie and meat combo platter and shrimp tibs. We had the option of getting smaller platters or one big platter. We chose one large platter. They give us a basket of injera. And we all dug in with our fingers. We loved all of it! They come by with baskets of more injera to top you off. We didn't need any more but great to hear that it's complimentary. Will definitely come back next time. Love Barcote!

Having eaten Ethiopian food only in the US, this is the best version that I've had across Chicago, NY and DC. They offer indoor and covered outdoor seating, giving it a homely comforting vibe. Since it was just the two of us, we ordered the vegan sampler and the lamb tibsy (spicy). The lamb was delicious and well spiced. All the dishes were served on a platter of injera - sour, spongy bread that just soaks up all the flavor to perfection. I enjoyed the red lentils (misir wat), yellow lentils (alicha) cabbage and carrot stir fry, collard greens and a house salad that had a dressing which perfectly complimented the rest of the dishes. They also offer additional injera should you need any - we didn't. You eat with your hands from the common platter, but they do provide additional plates and silverware should you need it. The portions are generous and we ended up taking some of the food home. They have a bunch of dishes I'd like to try, so I'm definitely going to be back!

Upscale Ethiopian spot with delicious spices across the board…read more The vegan sampler covers the highlights and mainstays of the menu. The foundation of the meal is the injera, which has the welcome sourness of wild yeast. Wrapping it around the cabbage of the AtaKilt and the collards of the Gomen lightens the vegetable bitterness and makes eating them into nearly a dumpling. The mild turmeric of the Kik Alicha is well met by the other split pea item, Messer Wot, which has a much bolder flavor. The pro move is to combine the appetizers with the entrees. Azifa is made with lentils but has the smooth texture of stewed eggplant and spreads easily. The Buticha brings garlic to whatever it meets. This time we also got the mushroom tibs. It came spicy but the mushrooms themselves didn't contribute much flavor -- the sautéed onions in the dish were doing most of the work. We will stick with the sampler next time. But regardless of what you order, by the end of the meal the flavors will all get mixed around and soaked into the injera beneath. The best part!

Located at a corner across from the DMV (on Sundays the DMV transforms into a lively farmer's market) off of Claremont, its sleepy vibes have attracted its own cult of regulars for years. Moreover, it's a quick bike trip from where we live in Jack London Sq, and I always make it a pit stop whenever we ride up Telegraph. An affordable bowl of shihan ful - a nice savory, spiced bean dip served with airy bread - can keep two hungry bellies satiated for hours. I've even tried to replicate shihan ful at home (SF Chronicles had posted a recipe) but honestly have not been successful. Best to just leave it up to the pros at Alem's. It's hard to describe the flavor but the bean dip is nourishing and bursting with umami-ness that lights up my brain, in a good way. Recommend stopping by for a bite after a leisurely stroll at the Sunday Temescal Farmer's Market.

The stewed fava beans come out with the density of something like baba ghanoush. It is served with two rolls of crusty French bread that you'll want to scoop and spread the phul over. The stew would be thick and heavy on its own but the bread lightens it up. Squeezing the lemon over the dish cut through some of the heaviness as well. Together, the bread and phul complement one another to make an excellent dish. The fava beans were topped with diced tomatoes, jalapeños, and farmer's cheese -- all covered generously with berbere and cumin. The effect was a rich spice that touched all parts of your mouth. (Maybe it needed a bit more salt to bring out the subtler flavors.) Spread over the crusty bread, the warm, gentle stew was met by the crunch of the bread that was delightful. If only I had realized why the bowl comes with two rolls! The stew is rich enough to need both. Fortunately, this is the kind of cafe where you can spend an easy lunch hour in the shade and visit. Bring a friend to share!
