I first became acquainted with food (and politics) of the Horn of Africa in the 70's, when Eritrean and Ethiopian restaurants first appeared in Oakland, but, not having visited, can't comment on "authenticity". The food at Selam was just real... and real good! My step son and I shared a veggie combo and lamb tibsi, plus (large) glasses of home-made honey wine last night. Everything was delicious and very satisfying -- more than two grown men could finish, and everybody in the (very small) place was friendly and welcoming. I believe our server was also the cook and owner. It felt a lot like we were eating at somebody's home overseas. I'll be back. As other reviewers have commented, they deserve our business. Why didn't I give a 5-star rating? OK, full disclosure: Some menu items were unavailable; the tables and chairs are very small; it's hard to find parking; and the neighborhood is not fancy. You should be aware of these things, but none of them should prevent you from eating here. read more

We went on the Black Liberation Walking Tour and wanted to stay in the neighborhood for lunch. This popped up on Google maps and we're so glad it did! The food was amazing!! The staff were very attentive and the price was starling low for the five of us We ate well and eating there was like having lunch at a friend's house! I believe one of the cooks was Mary and she was so kind and as we left, she offered us freshly made bread, Himbasha I believe it's called, and introduced us to her sister-in-law, who was also cooking. Wow just picked up 2 veggie combos and 2 cubed lamb meals (not sure what it's called). They were each $14. Delicious flavor and huge portions. The pictures other reviewers posted accurately depicted the meals that I got. You can get it spicy or not spicy. Amazing flavor. I would say these dishes are a cross between Indian and Mediterranean cuisines. They made the food when I ordered it. Very fresh. They are doing a great job during covid on keeping the quality high (not like other restaurants I've been to). When I went in there were Ethiopian men and one woman hanging out and talking. They were very nice and helped me. Seems like a cafe type hang out place for Ethiopians. Family run place that seems to provide staples for the locals around there. Absolutely delicious. Beef tips and vegetarian platter were both amazing. We got take out and it was ready on time and convenient.

Starting from the injera (which is the soft bread) is made out of Tiff which is nutritious grain, since I am Eritrean I know the injera is made out of Tiff 100%, which is gluten free. The stew, especially the Shiro (which is the orange paste) , is so delicious, it's make out of roasted chickpeas and spices. I like to eat more vegetables and grains. The vegetarian combo is my favorite. Knowing injera gives me probiotics, I prefer eating injera more than any other bread. read more

Decided to give this place a try, after having it bookmarked for a few weeks. The location is on 26/27th and MLK, which... well... you know. But it's a true neighborhood eatery serving nourishing comfort food. Like many others, I also got the veggie combo. I had never had shiro before, but it IS delicious. Like, wow, you can just give me a bowl of that and I'd be in heaven. The portion sizes are great and really do give you the feel that you are getting value for your money. The food is not oily, which can be an issue at some of the other local Ethiopian restaurants. The injera is a bit more tangy/sour than others, but it's still pretty good. read more

I had the Lamb Tibsi and Foul Moudamas - the lamb was delicious and delicately spiced but the Fava Beans took my heart perfectly cooked, seasoned, and with a nice sheen of oil that soaked so generously into the Injera! The Injera was absolute perfection !!! Full Teff flour (and 100% gluten free!) so my partner and I could enjoy its fluffy, light nuttiness together The staff were very sweet, warm and welcoming and had no trouble answering our questions about the products used to create such flavorful masterpieces! I only wish they'd had some collards as I'm 100% sure the chef would produce some amazing greens and they're regularly one of my favorite Ethiopian dishes! read more

Great small and casual spot on the border of West Oakland. This is no frills delicious Ethiopian food. I ordered the veggie combo to-go. Very generous portion, was easily able to share it between two people. Probably the best gomen (cooked greens traditionally served in veggie platters) I've had before. The combo also included a thick shiro (a chickpea flour dish made with a tomato sauce and spices) which I've not had served on a combo platter before but it was delicious. The injera had a slightly stronger sourdough taste than I'm used to compared to other local spots. Overall great food and will be going back. read more

Best Eritrean and Ethiopian restaurant. Despite their friendly service, I recommend trying their "Yebeg Tibs--Fried Lamb"; I noticed their, 'ENGERA (bread)', is one of the best of the bests. I love this place!! Great place to get fresh, made to order Ethiopian/Eritrean food. The people running it are kind and gracious and make the BEST gluten free (100% Teff) injera in all of Oakland. Plus, all of their food is served with their 100% gluten free injera with EVERY dish!
