1/5 Stars - Avoid Ethan Allen at All Costs: $4000 for a Broken Dresser? I'm writing this review as a warning to others: beware of Ethan Allen's poor quality products and appalling customer service. We spent $4000 on a bedroom set, only to receive a dresser that was severely damaged. The issues include: - Large gouges and scratches on the surface - A busted drawer that doesn't function properly - Peeling wood finish When we complained and sent the dresser back, we expected a hassle-free replacement or refund. Instead, they've repeatedly sent the same broken dresser, ignoring our concerns and gaslighting us into thinking there's nothing wrong with it. It's been incredibly frustrating to deal with this situation, especially given the high cost of the furniture. I'm still left without a complete bedroom set and feel ripped off. Unless you enjoy dealing with broken products and unhelpful customer service, I would strongly advise against shopping at Ethan Allen. read more

I'll stay with a rating of no more than 3. I bought my entire living area furniture + more from Ethan Allen. Marsha Lucas, their interior designer at the time, did all my living space, which I am really happy with. She really worked well with me accommodating my preferences. Their customer service is top-notch. One of my counter stools had a small tear in the leather when they delivered, and they promptly took care of it while being fully communicative along the process. The reason for only rating at a 3 however is because their furniture is not of the highest quality any longer. The quality was top-notch many years ago, and you could justify the very hefty price-tag. Not anymore. These days most of their furniture is made in China, and I see MDF used in good measure, instead of real wood (the quality is reminiscent of Pottery Barn furniture now). EA however chose to retain the very hefty price tags for such poor quality furniture. Good luck to them keeping up with competition, with their current business model. Luxury furniture brands have furniture that is far more reasonably priced (for the quality) than Ethan Allen. I won't be buying from Ethan Allen anymore. read more

I purchased the Kent high back chair. I special ordered fabric. The cord around the edge of the cushion is very hard. I didn't realize that this would cut into the bottom of my legs above the knees. I cannot sit on it very long as this hurts. Big mistake. read more

We ordered a dining room table and chairs for our breakfast nook with the help of our design consultant, Nesrene. Going to the actual store was a big bonus. We were were able to choose from a wide variety of finishes and designs which truly made our set custom. After our purchase, Nesrene was always available to answer all of my questions. The delivery people were very professional and respectful of our home. There was a piece missing from the bottom of the table along with a few scratches on the pedestal. We were contacted by Guardian (we did not purchase the additional coverage) within a few days and within the week a technician came and fixed everything. Again he was professional and respectful. We are so happy with Ethan Allen and their furniture. Friends and family have commented on the beauty and craftsmanship of the table and chairs. It was well worth the wait. read more

I'm notably disappointed with the newer version of Ethan Allen. Walnut Creek, Ca is the store we purchased furniture from. After years of having Etan Allen furniture, appreciation of the quality & friendly associates, this was interesting. it's the experience I'm speaking to. We ordered $50k of furniture. we did all the "footwork ", the designer messed the order, we corrected her... we we're trusting past experiences. The associate Jennifer Kim knows me. Her supervisor, Nick knows me but doesn't return calls. We bought a couch and a dining table from you with poor results. To fix problems, your company Used Guardsman and they took 2+ months to come out. The company tech said the couch was completely dirty after 2 months. Came out to clean the whole couch but only spot cleaned a pillow. Charged full amount. Stay clear of this formerly great furniture company. read more

My experience purchasing from this store has been disappointing. Ordered piece over 10 week's ago and still not available with no follow up from the store "sales person". After several phone calls they misinformed that it's available than it's not.. Not sure how they survive when most companies are able to take orders and ship in less than a month. This is a large and well merchandised store. Family owned, which is a rare thing in furniture stores, pride of ownership shines. Review is based on a single "just looking" experience. Or "just sitting" as the case was for us since we wanted to try a chair not on floor in our home city Ethan Allen. In spite of knowing we were out of owner's the designer / sales woman was most helpful. This n That: Parking in large lot. Accessibility is level in door and all on one floor. Seems to have ample room between objects. Sadly no ADA compliant parking in lot although one space one might make do. I had a wonderful experience with designer Mahnaz Vahdat in the Walnut Creek store. She really got to know me and what I was looking for. I was impressed with how she took the time to visit my home, taking various measurements and photos. She used a 3D rendering tool which was extremely helpful. She recommended and selected the perfect pieces for each room and returned to my home with fabric samples to see which were best. My home looks beautiful now and its always a pleasure to walk in through my front door. Thank you Mahnaz. read more

We are big fans of Ethan Allen and most of our furniture is from here. We've also bought real wool carpet, area rugs and accessories from here over the years. I love that their items are made in the USA. All pieces we've purchased have held up very well and continue to look fantastic. This is probably why we keep going back. Yes, it is on the higher priced side, but you get what you pay for. I would rather buy something once and pay more versus constantly replacing items. Our designer is Marsha and we love her. She has great ideas, is very friendly and a true pleasure to work with. Once you have a designer to help pick pieces it is tough to shop anywhere else. We are currently waiting for delivery on a new master bedroom set and can't wait for it to arrive. read more

I was told almost a month ago that someone would follow up on our dining chair upholstery repair and still haven't heard back. I've had to chase down someone to get me an answer. We went into Ethan Allen over a month ago to buy two chairs at $7K. They didn't have the chair to try out, so I called to cancel. They ask to have a couple days to find one, however never did, so I again cancelled the two orders. Our account was charged the $7K the day of the transaction, however even after requesting our money back and giving a deadline, they still have failed to credit our credit cards, and now it's been over a month plus and still no credit. It is extremely upsetting that they can charge you the same day but take months to give you your money back. This is completely unacceptable business practice. read more

We purchased a bunch of furniture from them and our sale person was Jennifer. She was helpful till the purchase was made but she completely changed after the purchase was finalized. 2 days after the purchase, we returned to ask for a color change of the fabric. We were given the new "color code" of the new fabric and were asked to sign. She told us we will get a sample by mail of the new fabric we chose. It took over a month for the sample to arrived and it was the wrong color. We returned to the store telling the mistake madden, and they keep saying we have agreed to the color change and there is nothing they can do. The manager was repeating himself that we had agreed on the color change because the "color code" Is matching what they had ordered. Very unprofessional to not stand by a mistake that they actually made and try to blame the customer. We were debating between two colors and the second date we returned they had changed the order to a different color. read more

I am still in shock over the service that i received this morning by a lady by the name of Lori. I called to get a status on an order that I had placed in Janaury. Lori answered the phone and asked who my design consultant was as well as my sales order number, when I told her, she seemed irritated and started to explain that she would have to leave a message for my design consultant. When I asked if there was someone else who could help me, she started talking over me and raising her voice and again stated that only my design consultant could help me and then started to ramble on about the process. (I realized that this was the same person that I had spoken to a few weeks prior and left a message with her to have someone call me back, which never happened!) I told Lori that I didnt need a 10 minute lecture on the process of checking on my order, I just wanted to speak to someone that could give me an update, that apparently made her angry, she than said then get of the f****** phone and hung up on me. I was horrified and immediately called back. Lori answered the phone and said ; 'What do you want'? I asked Lori what her managers name was, she told me his name was Nick but he was not there. I asked If there was a regional office that I could call and she said no. Needless to say, I found the regional office customer service phone number via google. I created a YELP account for two reasons. 1) to recommend the store we ended up buying from - Martini's in Brentwood and 2) to warn others NOT to waste your time or money at Ethan Allen in Concord. My husband and I walked in to the store and the woman at the information desk looked up at us, said nothing, and then went back to reading her book. It may have been because we were wearing t-shirts and shorts and not dressed up like the other customer in the store, but we were completely ignored. We started to look around and when we were finally approached I showed the saleswoman a picture of the table I found on their website and after a long search, she finally found it. While she was looking for the table, I showed another saleswoman a picture of the chairs we were looking for and she started to look, but then found out we were talking with another saleswoman and was told she couldn't help us. (We had several associates helping us at Martini's). They have no clue about their inventory and had to go look at several catalogs while we were there because they couldn't answer our basic questions. I could go on and on, from the woman who was irritated she had to put her glasses on to look at the picture on my phone, to the design services woman who turned her back on us and walked away without saying anything when we let her know we didn't need her design services. I have been to most furniture stores in the bay area looking for a table and I honestly thought we may have been on candid camera because this experience was almost comical. So, bottom line, I would rather eat off the floor than buy a table from Ethan Allen. read more

We've bought furniture from other Ethan Allen locations several times over the years, so when we moved, naturally we went to our new location to buy what we needed. Big mistake when it's the Concord store. Awful customer service. I stopped by to check on an issue we had with an order. I was the ONLY customer in the store, but still had to wait for several minutes before someone helped me. The girl sitting at the front desk finally told me to 'look around and someone will find you'. Cool. I did that. The man who helped me with the order issue was helpful, but obviously in a hurry. When our order issue was supposedly handled, I told him I needed to buy several more items for our home and asked for help finding a few things. Again, I was the only customer in the store...but still, the sales rep walked quickly ahead of me, seemed pretty irritated that I wanted to shop, and gestured to the areas of the store where I could find certain items, then started walking away. I stopped him to ask a question, which he quickly answered...then walked away again! Unbelievable. I left and figured I'd have to do the rest of my shopping online. When I got home, someone from the main Ethan Allen office had contacted my husband to tell him the issue with our order had NOT been resolved by the Concord store...and in fact, could not have been handled the way their sales rep claimed to handle it. Total waste of time. I'll be furnishing the rest of my home with Pottery Barn instead. read more

I visited your store once again in June 2015 because we are remodeling our house, and I was looking for a new dining room table. Instead of focusing on me she was busy running back and forth between me and another customer " short staffed" that day? I was indecisive and asked some questions (maybe i took too long to make a decision) to which she responded "well don't buy the table if you are not comfortable". So I didn't. This is when I asked if it was normal that the tanning would be wearing on the chair. I had pictures on my phone which I showed her. She told me she would get back to me. Maybe that additional information will jog her memory. In response to Mr. F, you are correct sir....not a great review. My original purchase date for the chair was 12/5/13. My wife and I recently picked up several pieces of furniture from EA. We were (and are) impressed with the quality of the craftsmanship and the style. Our experience was good with our salesperson (whose name I cannot remember). Most of our furniture (a dresser and a bed) arrived in great shape near the date projected. However, we had a set of lamps that turned out to be back-ordered. Not a big deal, except there wasn't any communication from EA on the ETA. I had to call on two separate occasions (weeks apart) to discover that the delivery would be later. In summary, our experience with EA was good (and I understand back-orders), but they lose a star for the failure to communicate. read more

This review is long overdue. We have nothing but rave reviews for the after-the-sale service. Anyone can be awesome during the purchase, or not. Obviously some reviewers got perceived bad service, or a bad attitude, from their sales staff but here's my story: We purchased a wall unit and desk from them about 2 and one-half years ago. One of the drawers on the wall unit started rubbing on the underside of the drawer about a month ago. (We had originally been putting file folders directly on the bottom of the drawer before realizing that they needed to be placed in hanging pockets, on metal rails, to take the weight off the drawer bottom.) I called them about this issue last Friday (day after Thanksgiving). They came to our home the following Monday and picked up the drawer. They repaired the drawer and redelivered it to us on Tuesday. This was all done at no charge and is standard procedure for them if there's a problem. Ethan Allen stands behind their quality products. They could easily have said the item purchased was beyond the warranty date, or that we caused the problem, but they didn't. Great service and attitude! read more

I have no problem with the service at the store, it is excellent. However, the so-praised high quality of the E.A. furniture is very questionable. I bought a bedroom set in 2008 and then additional piece in 2010. The wooden pieces are losing the lacquered surface - one of the knobs of the dresser looks bald now. Another dresser - the side board cracked after the move, mind you the IKEA furniture is still good as new. I called the store - apparently, they guarantee the quality only for 2 years, then you are on your own. Some drawers are not fitted well - it's hard to open and close them. BTW, I have a dining set in the kitchen that is 15 years old and I bought it in some cheap store in San Francisco - Clement street - still in good condition and I paid 100 bucks for it. Basically what I am trying to say - E.A. furniture is not worth the money; spend your hard-earned money elsewhere. read more

We ordered a bed frame from Ethan Allen and while we really like the quality and craftsmanship of the product, the customer service left a lot to be desired. We were initially told delivery would take 6-8 weeks. At the end of 8 weeks we called the store to inquire about the status of the delivery. It took 3 separate calls before we received a response, at which time they told us it would be another 4 weeks as the factory had just started making the bed frame. Our bed frame did eventuall arrive, 13 weeks after we placed our order and had paid a 30% non-refundable deposit. While we understand some of the nuances of the furniture industry (i.e., the high-end stores don't actually make the product until they have your money), one would hope an established company such as Ethan Allen would do a better job providing customer service and properly managing customer expectations. read more

Bought a beautiful couch and loveseat 2 years ago. Within a couple of weeks the cushions lost their shape and loft. I was told by the owner to fluff them up more often. 2 months ago when I called the store and spoke with the owner he kindly ordered new cushion cores at his expense. The cores were replaced and we had the same problem with them. Not wanting to throw out $3,000 couches I called an upholstery shop that has made cushions that have the firmness and hold their shape for $1,000. This is now an expensive couch and loveseat. The service, selection, construction of the couch frame and the cooperation of the staff are all excellent. Just watch out to make sure the cushions are what you want. read more

We had an extremely positive experience with our salesperson Lita as well as the staff at Fretwell's Ethan Allen store in Concord. She was very patient and helpful, and never pushy. That was much appreciated. When we stopped by and Lita wasn't in, the other sales staff treated us as if we were their own customers, which was great. Even called on the phone one day to arrange pickup/delivery and talked with the owner, who couldn't have been nicer. read more

The moving company didn't assemble my dining room hutch properly so I stopped in the store to tell them my problem and they came out to assemble it correctly the next week. The customer service is amazing at this store. The store is beautiful with a friendly staff. I will definitely be purchasing new pieces here. read more

In November of 2015, I was on the hunt for a good quality, nice looking, durable & comfortable sofa bed that could withstand the wrath of two young kids and a heavy husband when the wife snored too load. I went to many, many furniture stores throughout the bay area, including an initial visit here w/ Leda Lindsay. With all the research and browsing I did, I still ended up returning to Ethan Allen. I based it on the quality of what i was getting, along w/ the price (it was the last day of their sales event). I purchased the Bennett Queen Sleeper and air mattress w/ the Maxwell Nutmeg fabric. The quality of the sofa frame, mattress frame and fabric were evident. And Leda was very patient and answered many questions during both visits, even made herself available in-between other customers. I've had the sofa 6 months now. I'm very pleased w/ it and the performance of the fabric thus far. I would definitely recommend this sleeper sofa and fabric combination for anyone looking for a quality sofa bed w/ kids. I spoke with Steve Fretwell about fixing it and he informed me that I had purchased it at Ethanallen.com, but he would order me replacement glass free of charge and let me know when it has arrived. Five stars for Ethan Allen (Fretwell's) in Concord and their wonderful interior designer/salesperson Michelle W.! Hurray for Ethan Allen, the seventh furniture store we visited looking for a sofa, loveseat, and pillows for our home. The stores ranged from IKEA to very pricey custom-build boutique furniture stores. Ethan Allen was the only store that really evaluated our specific needs and found us furniture to match. The other stores had sales people ranging from procedural (come find me when you're ready) IKEA -- to pleasantly indifferent pointing us to their sofas -- to quite good, following us around, pointing out their wares and being solicitous. However, what set Ethan Allen and Michelle apart was that we were listened to, our likes and dislikes were evaluated intelligently, and excellent spot-on recommendations were made. Let me explain. We walked into the store, and a receptionist asked us to wait while she called a salesperson for us. My hackles were immediately raised, as I was assuming this was going to be a car dealership-like experience. I couldn't have been more wrong. Michelle did, in fact, patiently and without any pressure, follow us around while we sat on many sofas in their well-stocked showroom. My wife and I then had a discussion in front of her about the sofas we each liked individually the best. So far, it was not appreciably different from some of the other better showrooms we had visited. Then, the process changed. Michelle applied her knowledge of her sofas to educate us. Both my wife and I had picked out sofas of nearly identical depth. The only significant difference was the rake of the sofa backs and the resulting angle of the sofa-back cushions (when I walked in, I didn't know that sofa's had rakes). Michelle said that, while the rakes were actually rather close to each other, she had two or three sofas, the rakes of which split the difference between my wife's favorite and my own. Upon sitting on these recommended sofas, we immediately identified one model that suited us both perfectly. Were we done with the purchase? Oh, no. We now had to agree on fabrics. With Michelle's help, my wife and I were able to reduce the list of potential fabrics to three -- swatches of which we took home to see how they looked with our existing décor. Then, at home with the swatches, we were once again uncertain as to what would look best. Michelle, as an interior designer, agreed to stop by our house on her way home from work and help us to evaluate our alternatives. Michelle's recommendations were a little bit different than what either my wife or I would have selected. She tactfully explained, from an interior design perspective, why she was making the recommendations that she did. After the experience of the sofa selection, we trusted her judgment enough to place the order for the sofas and contrasting pillows as she had recommended. The made-to-order sofas were ready for delivery ahead of schedule, and a one-hour delivery window was promised (that's right, just one hour). Fretwell's-Ethan Allen delivered the sofas and pillows exactly when promised. The delivery men were extremely careful and fully explained how the sofas should be maintained. The sofas and pillows look fabulous in our home with our existing décor. The entire experience was extremely positive and greatly exceeded our expectations. From selecting the sofas to picking the fabrics, we ended up with products that were customized to our particular individual likes and needs, and the products were better than we could have selected ourselves. It was five stars all the way. We will check back in on Yelp in a year or two to report how well the furniture holds up. It feels very solid and well built. read more

Good furniture, poor service has been my experience . I've bought quite a lot of furniture here over the years and it is a long order time. I walked in here a month ago to check their clearance center in the back of the store for a little occasional table. It was just before closing but I just wanted to take a quick look as I was in the area and could come back later if I saw something, I live in Orinda. I stopped to answer a text from work and this saleswoman came over and said "excuse me, we close in 5 minutes" which was delivered with a bitchy tone of voice. I went to their Pleasanton store and made my purchase there along with a couple of lovely club chairs. I won't be back to this store. As I was leaving it was about 3 min till closing they stopped another woman from entering the store and slammed the door and locked it. I have never been as invisable as I was the last 2 times I went into this store. I have Know what I want to order and needed help with fabric and color. The person I was working with was not giving me adaquate help.No other person would help me. I tried to drop my initial contact person but found the only way to start over was to go to another store. I have loved EA since I was a child and have many of their items in my home. But today I walked out of this store right in the middle of my sale. I was not treated very well. I went in to return my rug sample and buy the rug I had been dreaming of and saving for. The sales lady that was helping me with it previously was busy, so I waited...Then when she was finally available she was rude and trying to get other sales while she was writing me up. She kept leaving the desk over and over. And also she misquoted me my price so it was going to end up being more. So while she was away from the desk, I just walked out. Why didn't she want to finish a FOR SURE sale (mine) instead of trying to get new business? It was just plain rude. Well, she lost a $2500 sale today. I will just buy it online, (which is what she told me NOT to do in a rude voice.) I try if I can to purchase items live to help keep stores in business...but when you are treated better online not having to deal with these kind of sales people, it is worth the extra you might have to pay in shipping. read more
