Those who are more interested in old and rare do well to watch out for special sales which are usually announced and advertised in advance, otherwise regular sale information is posted online Friday evenings for the next Tuesday afternoon's sale. The group images on the internet are generally clear, but don't expect any individual catalog entries and be sure to carefully inspect each item yourself. On the plus side, however, you may find a diamond in the rough! This is a country-style auction so there is no announced sequence for the sale of most lots (although they do schedule certain lots for phone bidders); however, you can ask the runners to move up lot. Unfortunately, sometimes the crowd is less interested in bidding than talking, and the noise can make it difficult to hear the auctioneer even though he uses amplification. There is an active food concession selling at the back of the auction gallery (another source of noise!) and clean restrooms off the lobby.

I think Rebecca misread my intent. Hessney is not a ripoff, he sells to the highest bidder. If…read moreyou don't like it, don't buy it. As for the fees, the State Sales Tax goes to the State, not Hessney. The buyers premium is indeed a rip off (since Hessney likely charges the SELLER a fee as well), but it is clearly stated at the beginning of every single auction and on his web site. The saddest thing is that buyer's premium does not buy you any guarantees. I think if you are being told that an item is in a certain condition, then it turns out that it does not work the buyer's premium should allow you to bring the item back for a refund of the bid price. The buyer's premium should be an insurance policy, not an extra 10% fee for Hessney. I would waive insurance if I could waive the fee. But to waive any insurance and still pay a fee above an beyond your bid price is just thievery.

While not Christies, this is a very professional and upscale auction in Orange County, NY…read more Finding it takes you along some lovely country roads, but keep your eyes on the road, lots of wildlife, think deer, out for an evening stroll. While the website (www.oldredbarnauction.com) gives you a good idea on whats going to be put up at the monthly (1st Sat of the month) auction, going there is a better idea. You can really see things and look them over carefully. They allow you in, give as much time as you would like and are helpful if you have questions. They have many pieces of furniture, much from older estates being sold. Some come in on consignment. There is artwork there, often some interesting pieces. They have old stoneware on occasion. Stamps come in from local dealers. China sets from "the old country" (which could be Russia, Belgium, Greece and any country in-between). Glassware from the 1920's. Leaded glass. Chandeliers. Some things will go for $10, others for $1,000. I have seen a few things go for much more. VIEWING is usually Friday afternoon before the auction, and Saturday afternoon just prior. Cash, MC, Visa, NO AMEX, local checks 15% BUYER'S FEE - I don't think there is a discount for cash. Seating is not super comfortable. but if you get there early enough its manageable. Or you can stand in the back area. Get there early on Saturday, parking will be difficult, at best. That's one annoying thing. The other is the cost of the food they serve. Ludicrous, and not good enough for the price. 5 stars because you don't go for the parking and food anyway, the auctioneer is good and he keeps things moving along.

I am across the country, and depend on their integrity, and have not been disappointed. And in one case, they suggested that they would be more comfortable selling an item to someone in person who was able to directly evaluate condition issues (tho priced accordingly) on a piece, and I appreciated that as well. Always one of the best selections of material in this field, both quality and condition. Helpful answering questions not related to sales too! Not inexpensive, but always great items worth seeing and considering if "Arts & Crafts" is you area of interest.
