I happened to be in Columbia during my birthday and my family insisted that we do something. Our original brunch option was canceled so I suggested an escape room. Looking for an option online that had a room that would accommodate all the people in my party. I came across the Escape Plan Columbia and their "What Happened to Detective Magnum" The description seemed fun and interesting. We arrived early for our 11:30 appt. There was plenty of parking and the staff was pleasant. We introduced to a few different employees as our room was being set-up but our actual host was someone totally different. I booked privately for a group of six, but we ended up being a party of 5. Of my group I am the only one that has done escape rooms previously. I would like to say the idea of the "What Happened to Detective Magnum" room was good and our host Hailey was very sweet and impressionable. However, I was disappointed in the overall experience. The room itself is 80's theme and dated, that is fine because it goes with the whole premise, but lighting is extremely poor. As well as many of the clues and locks for the safes are unreadable. The numbers are extremely worn. Without giving away any clues for the room, one important clue was incomplete (pieces were missing) and our host Hailey had to come in and actually complete that section for us. As a result we lost time and honestly our excitement was deflated. I enjoyed the idea of the room and Hailey as our host because she really tried to salvage the experience but I think it's unfortunate that minor details that are vital to the game are overlooked and not properly maintained. I mean you need complete clues and the ability to read the numbers on the safe (a marker or polish can replace missing numbers on safe dials) to advance in the room. One of our clues was missing a whole part that was required to spell a word needed to get a code. I had fun with my group but the overall experience fell flat and was a little disappointing. We wanted to do an escape room and my husband had purchased some tickets Christmas time so we decided to finally give this place a go! Mind you he's been wanting to come here forever ago I just haven't been up to it. I have personally done my fair share of rooms before so definitely not new to escape rooms. This place had easy waiver sign sign in and a great way to put any things to store away if you'd like. They had cubbies that were locked up and you kept the key. The room in itself was great! Dropped in a few nights ago to do Espionage, as it was the only room at Escape Plan that we had yet to try. I was hesitant at first after hearing that this was one of their older rooms, but we ended up having a great time! The room's scenic does seem to be older and less immersive compared to other rooms I have done, but the puzzles were challenging, yet fun and made for a nice, linear escape. Our Game Master, Daniel, was very personable and did an awesome job, giving us great clues to nudge us along the way. We were the last game of the night, so we struck up a little conversation with Daniel and another GM, Rachel, in the lobby for a bit after our game. They were super fun to chat with and both were very friendly and good conversationalists. My only complaint is that since we've completed them all, now we don't have any more rooms to do at Escape Plan! Hoping to see some new developments in the future! read more

Ended up at Escape Plan through a work outing. We ended up booking two rooms: Espionage and Mutiny. I've done a few escape rooms before and felt this one (Mutiny) was very well done. The props and set pieces were awesome. Puzzles for the most part made sense. There was really only one or two that I thought were contrived/reaching. My only other issue was that it was way too dark. The room I was in had a lantern that didn't work. Really only 1 lantern was actually useful, the rest that did work gave off very little light. The symbols/numbers on the locks and cryptex were way too small and difficult to read. This led to a moment where we actually had the right answer but we just didn't put it in correctly because of the vision problems. Despite this, both groups had an amazing time and are already discussing doing another room. I'd give this a 4.5 if there were half stars on Yelp. The problems I mentioned can easily be fixed. read more

Our four adult children and my husband and I came here today and we experienced the wizard room ! We tried for the Mutiny room but it was already booked so I believe you should plan way in advance so you can get the experience you want ! We all thought our escape room was fun thou ! This is an amazing escape room, after a long day of a lacrosse tournament. My friends and I decided that it would be a good idea to do the "Floor 23" elevator escape room. The aesthetic and environment of the room was absolutely amazing, and my game master was helpful and had an amazing since of humor. As an escape room enthusiast having done over 100 rooms in 3 states I have to say "What Happened to Detective Magnum" is by far the BEST! Great attention to detail creates a feeling of full immersion into the 80's, and into a story line unlike any other room. I love rooms that are not just a series of locks but use very creative ways to get you from one step to the next, and the room's creator does just that. There were many surprises I've not experienced in other rooms. While there is not an "in-room actor" the gamemaster does interact more than most rooms which I found to be very enjoyable. Rudy was our gamemaster and he was outstanding! It's one of those rooms that you replay over and over again in your head because it was that much fun. This was the second time I have been to Escape Plan. Both times have been awesome! On this visit we did The Wizard. We had an hour to get out and we finished the room in less than 40 minutes. I will say this room, although super fun, was a lot easier than the other rooms I have tried at Escape Plan. So if its your first time doing an escape room this might be the first room you would want to try. We had a group with all levels of Escape Room experience, from Jeff our resident expert, my husband and I who have done four or five, and Jesus and Tim who were virgins. I love escape rooms and I have to say that all of Escape Plan's rooms that I've experienced felt so very immersive. We came in last minute to see what rooms were available so we could remain a small group. Everyone seemed very friendly and we were introduced to the game by our cool yet spicy game master - Rachel. We did the Missing which we were told was a medium hard room with a 25% success rate. This wasn't my first escape room but I can honestly say that it was a funner experience than some other escape rooms I've done. The puzzles were thought provoking and made us have to pay attention to details. Overall it was a fun experience if not just because of the room but because of our gamemaster that joked around with us. We did get out with 30 seconds to spare too! read more

Decided to do an Escape plan game when our friends came to visit from out of town. We chose a room that suited a time we were available. The staff was so friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our adventure although we were unable to escape....if we only had 5 more minutes! We are all in agreement that we will definitely return. I've gone to three different escape rooms owned by different companies so far and this one is so far my favorite one. The rooms are well thought out and organized. We did the wizard room then floor 23 then the espionage room in that order. The wizard room was a lot of fun and definitely one of the easier ones but a great one to start with if you've never done an escape room. Floor 23 was by far the most fun out of all the rooms including other establishments. Espionage was ok.... nothing crazy special but still fun. The girl who set us up was named Katie and was super awesome! Very friendly and professional and she's just one of those people you just feel comfortable with from the moment you meet her. We also met one of the owners who was very friendly and engaging. I will be back to this establishment and am looking forward to the new upcoming improvements! read more

It's hard to rate an escape room effectively until you play all the rooms. That being said, we've done 2 rooms at the Escape Plan. Our first experience was with a large group of family members going through The Missing. That room was fun and great for our group, but felt a little bare. However the puzzles were still thought provoking and fun and I'd definitely recommend for a larger group. Tonight, we played Floor 23. This was a totally different experience. Floor 23 is one of the most immersive escape rooms we have done. The room is small, and though they say it can fit up to 5, I'd stick to 2, 3 max. The puzzles were hard and required some serious thought to conquer. Highly recommend Floor 23 to anyone looking for an escape room challenge. Definitely looking forward to coming back and trying the other 3 rooms. Peter, our game master tonight was pretty cool and fun to talk to and kept us on track when were working in circles. This was my first ever escape room and I loved it. I'd want to go again and again. My group of 5 was joined by 4 more girls. We didn't reserve the whole room so we had a mixed group. The room we did was called "Missing" and I loved it. Without giving too many details (clues), one group has to save the other group and escape together. After hearing this we mixed our friends up with the strangers. We had one hour to escape together. Listen to the story and rules carefully, there might be some hints. While in the game we can ask for 3 clues. Use them wisely and communicate with everyone, you never know how someone else will see something. I figured out the first clue and it was exciting. It's like okay let the puzzles begin. This isn't a game for people that give up. You have to look and think because not everything is a clue. We didn't complete it, but we were close. The rooms are not huge and they have a little suspenseful music playing. This made time fly by. And if you have to go to the bathroom or anything, you can. It's not that big of a deal. The staff was very kind. Even though one of the reps Slytherin, they are helpful and nice. They watch the game play. And give time updates, and will confirm certain things when asked directly. "Missing" is about to be retired, so hurry and this game before it's gone. Also, no phones are allowed, but it wouldn't help you. read more
