We ended up planning out our route and partaking on an epic Pacific Northwest roadtrip that eventually led us to Glacier National Park. Throughout the journey, "Peggy", our trusted camper van, led the way. From booking to pick up, during our rental and everything in between, the entire process was extremely easy and straightforward. I was thoroughly glad that I had paid for the unlimited mileage option as we definitely put some miles on Peggy. I was also thoroughly glad that I had paid for the insurance protection because unfortunately we needed to use it, getting a crack in our windshield while driving through the national park. All of the staff that I encountered at Escape Campervans were extremely friendly and engaging. They were helpful and very kind. The camper van itself was given to us in pristine condition and very user-friendly. It was comfortable for our 8 day roadtrip and we appreciated having the kitchenette in the back to cook our meals when we wanted. There was tons of storage and the bed was comfy. it definitely sparked an interest in my husband and I to eventually own our own someday. Rented a minivan camper for 4 days. Pick up was quick, the young lady was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable about the camper. The trip went well though the drawers did stick from time to time. As the vehicle lights stayed on for a few minutes after exit/entry when using the restroom at night, the engine had to be run in the morning for a few minutes to charge up the battery. Return was easy. Milton, the young man handling the turn in was friendly and efficient. A little advice: as the gas stations are a distance away from the rental agency, try to return the vehicle with a full tank of gas if possible. Would happily rent from the agency again. read more

We had a confirmation for a maverick. When we showed up, they gave us a "upgrade" to a much larger van. Having never driven a large fan before we did not want the upgrade. We asked for a maverick or our money back. They pulled out a 2009, 380 k mile van called Bubbles. We jumped in and went to our first destination. We went straight to bed after a long day and big traffic jam in the morning. We woke up, expecting to make coffee, but the rusty Coleman stove provided would not work, despite a brand new can of fuel. We immediately called the company. They said don't worry purchase another stove and we will reimburse you. We set off to a coffee shop and then to find a target. We purchased the stove. We decided to stay on the road and ended up at our next destination late in the evening. we set up. camp, open the refrigerator and all of our food was warm. Having no idea when the refrigerator quit working, we threw out all of our perishables and ate salad for dinner. The next morning, I tried starting the van and it wouldn't start. We sat around, wondering what we're going to do. How are we going to get to our next destination. We decided to try one more time and the car started, so we took off. We stopped at a diner to eat since we had no food, and when we were done, the van wouldn't start again. We called the company's roadside assistance. They were very helpful and put us through a number of steps to try. He said it was an electrical issue within the starter. We had to put the van in neutral to get it to start. He said this would not happen every time, but it would work intermittently. It was around this time that the sink stopped working we thought it was empty so we tried to fill it up, but I only took about a half gallon. we got it to work again but stopped once we used that half gallon so clearly the tubing wasn't going to the bottom of the tank to access the water. So now we have spent over $1000 to rent a 2009, 380 K mile van, without a working refrigerator, stove, sink, or an engine that was reliable. Oh! I forgot to mention the table that was bent so it would tilt and you couldn't put anything on it or it would fall. When we returned the van, the staff at the Milpitas place were very nice. They listened to all of our complaints. They reimbursed us for the stove and they gave us a dissatisfied customer discount. They said that they would be in touch with corporate to see what else they would do for us. We heard back from corporate and they decided not to charge us for the additional miles we put on the van outside of the contract, in addition to reimbursing us for the stove and for the dissatisfied customer. Although this nice, I do not feel that reimbursement is satisfactory. We paid for a van with a kitchen and a reliable engine. we did not get either. Our mother daughter trip 2025 began in San Francisco with a drive up the Northern California and Oregon coast. It was awesome with our Escape Campervan and not having to bring camping gear. The kitchen setup was easy and accessible to use. Our van had a small mechanical issue while on the road but Annette with roadside assistance was exceptional to work with. She made the necessary arrangements for a local garage (Old Town Auto Service in Eurek) and we were in and out within a few hours. The check-in process was easy since we prefilled the registration and watching the video was helpful to know what to expect. Overall a great experience. read more

I'm leaving satisfied after my 4 day rental from them. They maintain their vans quite well considering how many miles they put on them. The one I rented had 240,000 miles on it. I've rented from other Campervans in the Bay Area and none of them had even 100,000 miles on them and they are priced the same as Escape. For this reason I can't give more than 3 stars. You can just tell things are worn out in the van like armrests, carpeting, interior wear and tear scratches. The blind spot mirrors on both sides were busted. The AC vent was broken on the driver side window area. Little things like this which I would have been fine with if they were priced accordingly, but like I said, they charge the same as their competitors with newer products. Ben, guy that checked me in and out, was awesome. Friendly, efficient, personable, and effective. Great asset to the company! He recommended next time renting one of their newer models, which was great advice, I might just do that. Signage upon return was poor and one of the other guys working seemed short when replying with my questions and in his directions where I should be parked for the return. The sign on the door for drop offs and arrow on the other sign add to the confusion (see photo). I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, it is pretty early Monday morning. Van itself is youthfully painted and fun. The one I got is called Neon. Each van is uniquely painted and named accordingly. It drove fine and was extremely functional. I got the bed up top as well which was comfy and easy to operate. Fridge was finicky and didn't work well, but this is quite common on these, so want unexpected. Nice they let me park in their lot the whole time I rented. Overall very happy with everything but the age of the van and associated wear and tear. To be honest though, I would rent from them again and book a newer van more in advance. I had to book literally 2 hours before picking up because my Outdoorsy rental had maintenance issues last minute and I was left in a bind. With that said, I will never rent with Outdoorsy or another individual renter again. They have no replacements when they break down which they do quite often. These larger rental companies such as Escape are the only way to go. read more

Let me preface this by saying I am not someone who typically complains or takes time out of their day to write a bad review. This is a special situation. My wife and I booked an Escape Maverick van in San Francisco in April. Upon arrival, we were given a clunker van that looked to be more than 20 years old. It had 336,000+ miles on it and would shake anytime we drove over 50 miles per hour. Additionally, we had to stop at Walmart to buy Febreeze /air fresheners because the van smelled like vomit. But again, I am not a complainer and we dealt with it. Upon returning the van, the lady at the front desk attempted to charge us over 100$ for a chip in the windshield. Mind you, this van had marks/scratches everywhere, and the lady said she would not waive the chipped windshield cost. Lucky for me, I took video of the entire van (exterior and interior) prior to leaving on the first day and was able to capture the chip in the window and have the additional cost removed. If I did not have that video evidence, I would have been out 100+$. Lastly, I received an email two days ago from Escape stating we had used a toll (Golden Gate Bridge) and would have to pay for the charge. When we rented the van, I was told as much, and had no problem paying the 9$ or so for the toll. However, Escape never emailed/text/called me about the charge (or told me there was a pending charge), and the only communication I received stated that I used a toll and had to pay it ALONG WITH a 2$ "3rd party administration" fee and a 30$ "Admin" Fee. So, a 9$ toll became 41$. I have used 3 other campervan/RV companies in the past few years (Travelers Autobarn, Wandervans, and Cruise America) and have never had an issue with any of them. My suggestion to you all is to do your due diligence and look elsewhere when booking a campervan. read more

This is a bit heartwrenching as I so so wanted to give you guys 5 starts...but; the devil is in the detail. Upon arrival I was greeted with a "Can I help you" (as if I wandered in from the streets of Hayward) as oppose to a friendly May I help you. I then met w/ Brian and let him know I was waiting for my BF. He then told me my BF should hurry or we'll get "Bumped next" because he's waiting on his other 1pm. Hmm. Ok Brian... I told my BF to properly park and not block your driveway. I was being respectful. My BF then checked in and we were showed the van that was to be our home for the next week. Brian asked for my I.D. didn't notice my Bday was in a few days (whole reason for the trip..hello.) No attempt to even ask how my day was going. This is the reason why 4 stars... The vans tires were extremely old and worn to the wear bar. Which i pointed out to Brian which he did not acknowledge. He assured me the van had passed Mechanics inspection. Clearly, Brian knows nothing about tires and to everyone's surprise I am in the Automotive industry and know better. I shouldn't have to argue to get my point across...is my point. Anyway, once I did get through to Brian. He called upon his Mechanic who quickly agreed with me and swapped the van out immediately. (Thank you mechanic dude). All in all. Our vacay was EPIC. It was everything we wanted it to be. Pricing is fair. Van is clean and surprisingly comfy! Windows are large , wide and make for great views. Everything worked (except the fuel pump. These vans aren't new...which is fine BUT; lacking on the mechanical side is NOT. What if I was a naive female that didn't know any better? I would have been sent off to travel 13,000 miles on worn out tires? Not ok...the fuel pump issue I can understand. You'd actually have to drive the van for awhile to catch that...but the tires? Took the Big Sur. Big Ford Transit van that can accommodate a queen bed in the back while seating 5 upfront. Looking past the whimsical colors on the outside, it is a barebones interpretation of a camper van and fulfills your basic needs (stove, sink, fridge, bed, storage and space) and at 0.32$/mile after your daily rental ($50/day when I booked), it really is a much much more comfortable way for your passengers to travel long distances as opposed to a big SUV that would cost $200/day. The driver does have his or her work cutout because it is a rectangular block that is cutting through air and there is a fair amount of concentration required to keep things comfortable. What doesn't help is the noise. I'd recommend putting in some sound absorption material to dampen the noise at speed. The trip has convinced me that I should get a van of my own and that I should ensure it is a teensy bit more luxurious to truly enjoy it. But until I can afford one, escape campervans will have my business. read more

We picked it up in Hayward (San Francisco) We are two women in their 70's and we found clambering over each other during the night to go to the restroom is hard. Also having to fold up the bed during the day is a pain. There's not a lot of storage that is reachable. The mileage on the van was almost 315,000 but it didn't let us down. No bells and whistles-no back up camera. There's no heat unless you're moving and we camped where the nights were 40*F I would pay more next time for more room and easier in and out and more comforts in general. read more

My experience with Escape Campervans, specifically the Maverick van, was as subpar as it could possibly get and ultimately rather disappointing. The camping trip itself was a great experience but I feel as if next time I should be more thorough with choosing which company to rent camping supplies and gear from. Realistically, my partner and I were mainly disappointed in the quality/state that the van was in and how it felt staying in there. We recently rented the van during the shelter in place and cleaned over the van before even setting up inside of it just to be cautious. I'm so glad we did this because the table and little bench area was covered with a shade of gray, which I assumed was just from a dirty table/bench being poorly wiped down. The car felt filthy inside. The plastic sides of the interior of the car were all loose or had already detached where the kitchen section was. The refrigerator didn't work. I also had rented a few different kits, but not all of the supplies listed were included. At the end of the day, this isn't the worst company and I really appreciate their intentions, regardless of my experience. I think it's just incredibly crucial that the company further focuses on their quality of sanitation during these times. .. But just to reiterate -- Would I spend as much as I did renting with them again? Probably not. read more

Had a great experience renting an Escape van for the first time. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Loved the van design we received. Was clean and covid disinfected. Didn't have any issues with the vehicle or amenities. The only downfall is the pick up and drop off times. Pick up after 1-4pm, drop off before 10am, like a hotel. I understand their cleaning schedule but it makes it really difficult for the customer to plan driving unless you are staying close to the bay or book extra days to pick up/drop off. Normally you can pick up a van in the morning and drive to your destination during the day, and vise versa when coming back, leave in the morning to return the van in the afternoon, but that's almost impossible with the allotted times. You basically have to get the van at 1-4pm, park it at home overnight and leave the next morning (unless you are driving less than 4 hours), then arrive back one day early to drop it off at 10am. Which kinda sucks you're paying an extra day for it to sit in the driveway. No other competitors do those times. That and also not having an unlimited mileage upgrade is also an issue that would stop me from renting again. We were going to rent an escape van to go to Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon this summer but the extra mileage would've been astronomical so we found alternative options. Again, other competitors offer an unlimited mileage plan. But aside from that I did enjoy myself in the escape vans and if you're aware with what I mentioned above, then it's free riding! I'd rent again but for short distances where you stay put, not a lot of driving. read more

Can't say enough good things about this company! I've used Escape twice, once out of the Las Vegas depot and most recently out of Hayward. I rented the bigger van (suitable for 2-3 people) last year, and the smaller Ford two-person (what Escape calls their Santa Fe model) van this year. This year, this was the smaller van's maiden voyage with Escape (the van had about 50,000 miles on it). I am a relatively new driver so was a bit nervous about this trip, but the van ran so perfectly, it was easy to drive, and it was super comfortable to sleep in, with a thinner but really comfortable Ikea mattress. I did have to buy a sleeping bag as I did not get extra linens and the duvet package Escape offers is not super warm. We drove a total of 1500 miles in 10 days and it was so amazing to have all the amenities this van came with - a one-burner stove, fridge, sink, etc. We did have a little issue with the sink in that it didn't drain, so I ended up just running the tap over the ground to rinse things as opposed to running it over the sink. Escape didn't credit me for this issue, which was a bit frustrating, and I did find it a bit odd that the price of my trip was about the same as my trip last year with the much bigger van (that converts to table/seating, which this van did not). But overall, I am super impressed with how this company operates, I've been recommending them to friends and family, and would definitely rent from them again. read more

I showed up to pick up a van only to find $1000 fee for burning man they didn't inform me about when I made the reservation 6mo prior. As I had booked so early, fees had changed and I did not get the notices about the fees. To their credit, managment was understanding and reasonable with meeting me in the middle. Now onto the van: overall, it's a smart setup as the website videos show, good storage, easy kitchen, and spacious with a few notable exceptions. Aging fleet with problems like a broken driver's seat arm rest, a non working left stereo unless cranked to high volume, the "black out curtains" were installed with eyelet screws and helped but not in a meaningful way due to not covering the windows fully, and the futon pillows were different sizes leaving you sleeping on different levels probably from interchanging the pillows over the years. Also, not on the website but informed the day of, the 5 gallon water tank isnt potable water and the "solar" fridge needs to be charged daily (when it's hot outside) by running the engine for almost an hour. So, plan accordingly for shade, water, cold food, and comfort. Overall, the issues with the fees, despite management eventually being reasonable combined with the disappointing or broken features described above, the best I can give this place is 2 stars. read more

Miles are paid separetely, they tell you by the time you already booked. The VAN WAS DIRTY, they didnt clean it. All sticky and the sink did not work properly. Everytime we used the sink it took us like 5 minutes for water to come. All the windows are not tinted well enough, people can see through from outside. Not an awesome work done inside the ban. There s no mattress, only the seats are used as bed, we had to buy a foam mattress to put on top of seats to sleep comfortable, and we had to cover the windows with black plastic, so they couldnt see us from outside. A bit disappointed with them. We returned rhe van one day before, they dont even refund us the day we didnt use it. For 10 days $2200??? OVERPRICED!!! read more

We had a wonderful experience with Escape Campervans! We used RVShare to look for a camper van as we were planning to camp for NYE, and it would be freezing! We booked really last minute, like the day-of, and Escape was able to accommodate us. Customer service by Star was superb. She's super clear and knowledgeable, and really chill. As to the van, we booked the Big Sur, and it was very well laid out and very clean! I don't know if it's because of COVID cleaning, but I just thought to myself that cars and hotels really should be up to COVID cleaning standards always, not just during the pandemic. Picked up a van from this location recently and the staff was short and seemed inconvenienced by our arrival. The first person in the office looked up when we we said we were there to pick up and rudely said "all of you?" at our small group. Then she proceeded to pawn us off on to her coworker because she was apparently too busy with something else to help us. The second person we dealt with wasn't rude, but was very short and to the point with the paperwork. When we went outside to inspect the van and mark down damage, it felt very rushed and like he didn't care at all. They obviously aren't very thorough with their inspections inside the van either as our gray water tank was full, the release valve for it was broken, our kitchen kit was missing items, the locks for the drawers were lost/broken, and the handle to part of the bed platform was broken (all of which we found out a day or so into our week long trip). He gave us the keys and went back inside without asking if we had any questions on how to use things in the van (which we did) but thankfully we were able to figure it out on our own. It just would have been nice to not have been rushed through the process considering we were the only ones there. Thankfully, we had a much better experience with our drop off location in Portland. read more

Feeling lucky? Like safety? Because renting from Escape is - without a doubt - a gamble. Next time, I'd think about renting a big SUV and just putting the seats down. The only conclusion I can come to after spending over a week with one of their vans and dealing with their roadside service is that Escape does the bare minimum to keep the vans driving, and tries to keep them on the road until they fall apart. Just hope you're not renting it when that happens. When I first got there, I was expecting a 30-45 minute wait, since that's what their website said. After two and a half hours, I was finally on the road. This frustratingly long wait was long enough that it wrecked the plans I had for the rest of the day. If that had been it, then I could have dismissed it as a blip, but by the next morning, I had discovered that the van - which had nearly 300,000 miles on it (!) - couldn't lock! I would lock it, and without fail, 5-10 minutes later, the whole van would be unlocked again, no matter what I did. I lost another full day as their roadside service directed me to two mechanics who couldn't fix it. After that, their roadside service stopped responding. Clearly, the message was that I was SOL and they weren't going to do anything about the issue. Would have been nice if they at least had the decency to tell me that rather than just ghost me. To their credit, they were helpful later on when there was an incident resulting in some body damage. I got to spend the whole rest of my trip wondering whether my gear would be there when I got back from hiking around, or even whether the van would be there. Not to mention that it would have been nice to be able to lock up when going to sleep. When I returned the van, they reimbursed me for the one day I lost going to different mechanics. Appreciated, but again, pretty much the bare minimum they could have done. I sent them an email with feedback, but received no response. In all honesty, it would probably be more cost-effective, and almost definitely more reliable to just rent a big SUV, lay the seats down, and bring a sleeping pad/bag and small stove. The fuel economy on the van I got was really bad too, so again, probably better off with the SUV. read more

I have never given a bad review for anything in my life but I was extremely surprised by the terrible service I received from Escape Campervans on my trip. I rented the Maverick van with two other friends to travel up the west coast. We chose Escape Campervans company fully expecting the van to not be in top quality (but since we are broke college students this was actually much more luxurious than what we are used to in our vacations). That being said even for us we were a little shocked with the quality of the van. The water in the tank smelled like gasoline so bad that we couldn't use it for anything and ended up buying water jugs (apparently people often confuse the water tank with the gas tank so this must be due to past user error). Also the van we were given had over 300,000 miles on it; which wouldn't have been an issue had the van run perfectly. However, on only our third day in the van we woke up to the van not turning on. We were meticulous about turning off the lights and not leaving anything plugged in overnight due to the used condition of the van, but the battery still died. We immediately called the roadside assistance when the van wouldn't start only for the line to be busy. We were then directed to an emergency number which also went straight to voicemail and had a full mailbox so we couldn't even leave a message to receive a call back anyways. We then received a text from the company for roadside assistance (see messages below). Not only could we not get through to any agent on the phone but the agent on text was not helpful at all. We were under the impression that if we had issues with the van it would be covered by the company which is why we were okay with taking the risk of driving an older rundown van with 300,000 miles. We also purchased the rental insurance with the assurance from the lady at the front desk that if we had any issues on the road it would be taken care of or reimbursed. We purchased insurance for issues exactly like this so we didn't understand why the agent on text said it wasn't covered. Naturally we were surprised that the company was not offering any reimbursements or help for the dead battery and when we asked the agent on text for clarification on our contract he was just extremely rude. We didn't plan on making a big deal about any of these issues but after being stranded for hours in the freezing cold and not receiving any useful help from the company or call back I would not recommend Escape Campervans to anyone. Thankfully we found a nice man to jumpstart the battery for us for free (saving us $100) since all the nearby service companies were closed. Overall, if you don't mind traveling in an older rundown van with no clean water and are okay with taking the risk of having van issues that you'll have to pay for out of pocket (even with insurance) then rent with Escape Campervans. read more

We had a small problem with our stove but the team worked with us to remedy it quickly and was super friendly. We rented one of the large Maverick vans with a camper tent on the roof. We fit four adults (my inlaws, my spouse & me) plus my son (age 12). We traveled to Joshua Tree, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, and Death Valley. Awesome trip and wonderful way to do it. Loved the space inside. It worked well for us. We were running late returning the van on the Sunday after Thanksgiving because of traffic. I called the help number and they helped us work things out very smoothly. We rented a van for a week to camp during spring break. The van set up is amazing, but we had major issues with the van. There is a sink on the back which you pump water. The pump was broken and it worked for the first three pumps and then did not worked at all. We camped 7 days without a sink, washing dishes with water bottles. Employee said there was bubbles on the pump and we have to keep pumping. We did pumped for 20 minutes straight and nothing worked. We said we filled the tank 3 times until it flooded and she said that we were wrong, "there must be no water on the tank" and smiled. On the other hand, she did not try to fill the tank neither pump until the water comes out. There is an LED light. It worked fine, for five minutes, then it stopped working and started to blink every minute and sometimes stayed off for long breaks. The employee said we did not have power on the solar powered battery, but we drove 900 miles under the sun, the battery showed 12.8v (fully charged), and the led lights still blinked. And again, she said there is nothing she can do. When we turned the van back to the SF location (same we picked it up) and complained about these issues, the Escape Campers Van employee said there is nothing they can do to make things right. She argued "I am just a worker, there is nothing I can do". If not an employee/worker, who else could help making things right? Things break and we know it. We know pumps and lights can be faulty, we just did not expect a company to do not give a f*** about it when it does break. I would search for other vans before renting this one. read more

Too bad my experience with said company wasn't as great as the other reviews suggest. Let's start off with the reservation. We asked to pick up the camper at 10:30, the 'customer service guys' were in the office but asked us to come back at 11:00. At least we could leave our stuff there. Why offer and confirm pick up at 10:30 then? So we do all the paperwork, get the keys to the car and a really short heads up on how to drive it. No info on how to handle things like water tank when driving to cold areas, even though i asked for it. No answer. "Ok, here's your silverware, dish soap and your propane stove". Too bad we had six spoons, three knives but no forks and noticed that the first time we tried having dinner when camping. The right side trunk door wouldn't close unless you pushed it real hard. The guy said that it was "because of the weather strip". I think it was because a previous customer backed the car into something so the hinges wouldn't align properly. The worst part, however, was the poor maintenance of the camper. The "check brake system" message would come on the time we were in their depot. The guy told us that's nothing to worry about. We did not have any brake issues while we were going slower than 30. if you hit brake hard going faster the steering wheel would shake as the rotors seemed tp be out of balance and/or worn. The wrench symbol would come on ocasionally. The front tires were out of balance and the steering needs adjustment (car would pull to the right) and the steering rack seemed worn (lots of free play and rattling noise when steering on this 100000+ miles car. The wipers were worn (seemed like the ones the car came with) and there was no detergent in the window washer reservoir, just tap water. So the insects that were on the windscreen to begin with never went away. Weak battery, when cranking the engine the gauges would go dark, even after driving 300+ miles and the cranking would be really slow. Best part: going through las Vegas the low tire pressure warning came on. We pulled into a wal mart parking lot to notice the rear right tire loosing air with a loud hissing noise. We checked it and found out it wasn't the ordinary flat, but the valve failing in holding the air. The probable cause Is the lack of dust caps on all but one tire to prevent dirt to enter the valve and cause deflation. Think of what happened if the tire failed at 75 on a busy freeway. The rosdside assistance from Escape asked us to change the tire, but did not tell us where exactly the tools we needed were located in the car. A Plus was that they sent us a tow truck to take us to a tire place, but that was closed on sundays. So the tow truck guy (who was really nice and from an external company) and me had to change the tire in a shady LV parking lot. The spare tire (Michelin LTX) was underinflated (56 PSI cold instead of 80). So don't book with Escape if you have lousy car repair skills . I don't, but intended to to something more relaxing than having to worry about car breakdowns during my vacation. When we wanted to return the camper no one was at the office - during their business hours. Would have given 2 stars but we found the camper parked opposite their office with the greywater tank apparently just drained on the street (see photo) on the day after returning it which I think is not considerate to the environment! Someone might get hurt with these maintenance issues, which could result in serious legal problems. Avoid!! P.S.: the Paint jobs are cool, but think of what's more important to you: possibly getting hurt in a car that looks cool or having a hassle free camping trip in a plain looking camper. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I am not the "one star review" person. Look at my profiles, I don't think I have ever left one... but... this experience is special. My wife and I planned a trip to Yosemite for our 5 year anniversary. Our flight got delayed on Saturday of Memorial Day weekend to the point that we had to fly out the next morning. I called the reservations department and told them that we wouldn't be able to make it in time for pickup on Sunday, and asked just to be sure if we would be able to pick up the van on Monday instead. The rep said "yeah no problem at all" Fast forward to Monday morning, we Uber over to the office at a cost of $40 and no one is there. So I call. And call. And call. No answer. I finally sent a Facebook message, which was replied to by saying that they were closed for the day. When I explained my situation of having been told the day before that it wouldn't be a problem to pick up, he offered no help. Did not offer to put me in contact with a manager - nothing. All he did was recommend some good restaurants around San Francisco while I wait for tomorrow. Here I am, stranded in the most expensive city in the United States in a situation that could have been easily avoided had the reservations agent simply told me the truth to begin with. It would have been simple to just change my flight to Tuesday morning in the first place, but we flew across the country for nothing because we were lied to, and then not offered any help or any restitution for the error. I am picking up the van in the morning, but at this point my hopes aren't very high. Regardless I will not be returning to escape camper vans and I recommend that you don't try them either. read more

We hired a campervan back in June 2013 out of the San Francisco office (near Fishermans Wharf) and spent four days camping in and around Big Sur. The campervan we rented had everything, and I mean everything, we needed to have a perfect car camping experience. Our vehicle had bedding, a stove, silverware, cooking utensils, corkscrew, etc. The guys at Escape, Nick and Jimmy, went out of their way to make sure we had a great trip...including off-the-beaten track ideas on where to hike and camp in Big Sur! We'll definitely use Escape again - probably head to Yosemite next! read more

I feel very proud of myself for booking this campervan. Let me pause for a sec so I can pat myself on the back. Ok, that's done. My boyfriend and I were thinking of renting an RV for a Northern CA road trip up to the redwoods. I did a little research and came across this company renting amazingly painted vans with beds in the back. I was like, I can sleep in a van! No problem. (Not going to lie, I bitched a little bit.) All in all, this is a really fun way to roam around the countryside. It's not going to be luxurious and your girlfriend might bitch a little (even if it was her idea), but you won't be sorry you're cruising around in a giant snowman-mobile. My van's name was Frosty ... for obvious reasons. Also, I just have to say, if you do have any issues with your van, they make it up to you. We went over our mileage a tad, but the guy at the office took it off our bill because we mentioned a few things that needed maintenance. We weren't even thinking about getting a freebie, just wanted them to know so it could be fixed for the next tourist. That right there will make me a repeat customer. This expands your range, increases the quality of time in camp, brings first-time hikers further into nature, and offers a great staging ground for any adventure. I don't even know where to begin with my words of gratitude and praise about this company. I can start by simply saying every part of the process from booking to returning the van was my absolute pleasure. We loved every inch of our Mavericks home for the 7 days we had it. Even after returning home we chose to sleep in the van the one last night we had it because we enjoyed it so much. It's funny because companies pay out millions in training seminars for customer service and goto extreme lengths and claim to be "Number 1". But from Starbucks to The Ritz Carlton I have never encountered such genuine "customer service" and friendliness as I have with Escape. Escape is TRULY unrivaled when it comes to service and customer satisfaction. Chris made the entire process a breeze and was helpful every step of the way. Going out of his way to make sure we had all the necessary amenities for our trip. The canopy he got us made the world a difference for our weekend at Coachella. I still cannot express enough how grateful I am that this company exists. Consider myself and my 3 friends living advertisements for Escape. This company is absolutely terrible. Wanted to rent a van for the weekend for a roadtrip with some buddies. The van broke down in the middle of our trip. We ended up having to pay even though it was not our fault at all. On top of this the employees were super rude and were trying super hard to get our money. They were not willing to listen to what happened, and threatened to bring us to court if we didn't pay immediately. I recommend never renting from this company. read more

You can get off a plane and just bring your clothes they provide everything else, bedding, pots and pans,camp chairs, kitchen stove and fridge. No need for gear. All kinds of people stopped to talk with us on our trip and check out the van. We had a ball, drove to Joshua Tree, adults slept in the van and 2 kids up top on the rooftop pop-up canvas tent - fantastic! The guys were so nice checking us in, very flexible on their mileage policy, tip top friendly service. They often rent for 3 weeks or more and folks drive all around the country! They could spent less on custom paint and more on fixing old interiors. The van we got had 276,000 miles on it and it showed. It ran well and the only mechanical type issue we had was a tire pressure sensor that kept wanting to alarm. There were broken AC vents, no hose for filling the water, no way to drain the grey water into designated spots easily, the table was bent down on 2 sides so that it wasn't really flat etc. We got a new stove because during walk-though the employee couldn't get the original one to screw together correctly so it worked very well. The fridge worked well for us. We still had a good time on our trip but I think next time I'd just rent a car and tent etc. read more

Look a little while to write this review however it is a review worth writing! I rented a campervan for spring break in the month of April and it was one the best road trips ever! We started our journey from Burlingame and drove to Vegas, Page AZ, Grand Canyon, Sedona and back to Bay Area! I was little nervous because I was driving on my own (being a women) with my 3 teenagers but I had no problem with the campervan or getting it set up for the night or getting ready to take off in morning! The campervan saved time with not having to put out a tent and put together and etc. We used the stove and cooked throughout our whole trip. Would I recommend campervan? Yes!!! We are planning on making this our spring break tradition and pick a different state to visit each year! read more

Sorry for the delayed review! Let the fact that after 7 weeks I still had urge to write it, be the best proof of quality you can expect from that company! With 2 other friends we took one of the Mavericks for 2800 miles long road trip through CA-NV-UT-AZ, and it was amazing. Even though we were all sleeping on the back it was very comfortable, and I had enough space around me not to feel "weird" with other guys sharing the back. Kitchen and accessories are exactly what you gonna need, it's a road trip after all, so expect only what is really necessary - and you'll find it. The milage was pretty good, we spent less on gas than expected. The car was in a good shape, and we got awesome underwater painting! My husband and I decided to purchase a groupon deal for an Escape Campervan and we absolutely loved the experience! We picked up our Campervan in LA, and I admit that I was initially a little bit worried by the super lax, laid-back attitude of the employees at the office (young dudes on laptops listening to loud rock music, semi zoned-out while you ask them questions...), but the actual experience in the van was awesome. The design of the van is great and well-planned for any sort of adventure. There's a surprising amount of space but I wouldn't recommend packing more than a duffle or two. Sound system is pretty decent! You will need an AUX cable and a car adapter to charge your phones. The bed situation is easy to setup and was pretty damn comfy compared to an air mattress in a tent. We slept great! This would be amazing for a music festival. After adjusting to driving a vehicle of this size, we had a blast rolling up highway 1 to SF where we returned the van. Only reason I docked one star is because leading up to the rental, I had an impossible time trying to get ahold of any staff members who could answer my questions and when they did respond it was in a very casual, short message. I think they just run their business in a casual way which is fine but it would've been nice to get a well-explained response with regards to my groupon, how it all worked, etc. But I would absolutely recommend this experience!! read more
