We had a confirmation for a maverick. When we showed up, they gave us a "upgrade" to a much larger van. Having never driven a large fan before we did not want the upgrade. We asked for a maverick or our money back. They pulled out a 2009, 380 k mile van called Bubbles. We jumped in and went to our first destination. We went straight to bed after a long day and big traffic jam in the morning. We woke up, expecting to make coffee, but the rusty Coleman stove provided would not work, despite a brand new can of fuel. We immediately called the company. They said don't worry purchase another stove and we will reimburse you. We set off to a coffee shop and then to find a target. We purchased the stove. We decided to stay on the road and ended up at our next destination late in the evening. we set up. camp, open the refrigerator and all of our food was warm. Having no idea when the refrigerator quit working, we threw out all of our perishables and ate salad for dinner. The next morning, I tried starting the van and it wouldn't start. We sat around, wondering what we're going to do. How are we going to get to our next destination. We decided to try one more time and the car started, so we took off. We stopped at a diner to eat since we had no food, and when we were done, the van wouldn't start again. We called the company's roadside assistance. They were very helpful and put us through a number of steps to try. He said it was an electrical issue within the starter. We had to put the van in neutral to get it to start. He said this would not happen every time, but it would work intermittently. It was around this time that the sink stopped working we thought it was empty so we tried to fill it up, but I only took about a half gallon. we got it to work again but stopped once we used that half gallon so clearly the tubing wasn't going to the bottom of the tank to access the water. So now we have spent over $1000 to rent a 2009, 380 K mile van, without a working refrigerator, stove, sink, or an engine that was reliable. Oh! I forgot to mention the table that was bent so it would tilt and you couldn't put anything on it or it would fall. When we returned the van, the staff at the Milpitas place were very nice. They listened to all of our complaints. They reimbursed us for the stove and they gave us a dissatisfied customer discount. They said that they would be in touch with corporate to see what else they would do for us. We heard back from corporate and they decided not to charge us for the additional miles we put on the van outside of the contract, in addition to reimbursing us for the stove and for the dissatisfied customer. Although this nice, I do not feel that reimbursement is satisfactory. We paid for a van with a kitchen and a reliable engine. we did not get either. The bed was more comfortable than it looked, however.

tires almost bald, cupping, showing signs of cracking. And I'm supposed to drive 13,000 miles in these on my Bday? -_-

This is a bit heartwrenching as I so so wanted to give you guys 5 starts...but; the devil is in the detail. Upon arrival I was greeted with a "Can I help you" (as if I wandered in from the streets of Hayward) as oppose to a friendly May I help you. I then met w/ Brian and let him know I was waiting for my BF. He then told me my BF should hurry or we'll get "Bumped next" because he's waiting on his other 1pm. Hmm. Ok Brian... I told my BF to properly park and not block your driveway. I was being respectful. My BF then checked in and we were showed the van that was to be our home for the next week. Brian asked for my I.D. didn't notice my Bday was in a few days (whole reason for the trip..hello.) No attempt to even ask how my day was going. This is the reason why 4 stars... The vans tires were extremely old and worn to the wear bar. Which i pointed out to Brian which he did not acknowledge. He assured me the van had passed Mechanics inspection. Clearly, Brian knows nothing about tires and to everyone's surprise I am in the Automotive industry and know better. I shouldn't have to argue to get my point across...is my point. Anyway, once I did get through to Brian. He called upon his Mechanic who quickly agreed with me and swapped the van out immediately. (Thank you mechanic dude). All in all. Our vacay was EPIC. It was everything we wanted it to be. Pricing is fair. Van is clean and surprisingly comfy! Windows are large , wide and make for great views. Everything worked (except the fuel pump. These vans aren't new...which is fine BUT; lacking on the mechanical side is NOT. What if I was a naive female that didn't know any better? I would have been sent off to travel 13,000 miles on worn out tires? Not ok...the fuel pump issue I can understand. You'd actually have to drive the van for awhile to catch that...but the tires? Really? This is an easy one guys... Prim up on your customer service and inspections and I'll think y'all will be golden. Regardless, thank you .

We picked up the van (the dreamland)  from Escape Campervans depot hayward We saw that the van was very old, we asked how old it was, they did not know this but it was very well maintained according to them.  it had 235.000 miles already. we got a very short and quick briefing about the Van.

Definitely rent from Escape if you're curious about life on the road in a camper! It was such a phenomenal experience, and something I would highly recommend to everyone. Kerry at Escape was super helpful with the reservation and with providing recommendations for the trip, so were the staff at the actual location when we went to pick up our rental. The van was great, easy to drive and transform from bed to seating area. One of my favorite parts was parking up at the top of the mountains, way up in the clouds...sitting in the backseat looking out at my husband cooking in the back of the van with the ocean and mountains right behind him in my view :) Unforgettable. Don't think about it, just do it!

    Happy campers!!

My friends and I went to Yosemite National Park and it was amazing!! We rented two vans and they were perfectly equipped with cooking tools, a stove, clean sheets and even chairs and additional items. I booked my trip over the phone and it took me less than 10mins. Can't think of anything bad to say about then tbh. Totally recommend Escape Campervans ! Can't wait for my next trip!

Had a great experience renting an Escape van for the first time. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Loved the van design we received. Was clean and covid disinfected. Didn't have any issues with the vehicle or amenities. The only downfall is the pick up and drop off times. Pick up after 1-4pm, drop off before 10am, like a hotel. I understand their cleaning schedule but it makes it really difficult for the customer to plan driving unless you are staying close to the bay or book extra days to pick up/drop off. Normally you can pick up a van in the morning and drive to your destination during the day, and vise versa when coming back, leave in the morning to return the van in the afternoon, but that's almost impossible with the allotted times. You basically have to get the van at 1-4pm, park it at home overnight and leave the next morning (unless you are driving less than 4 hours), then arrive back one day early to drop it off at 10am. Which kinda sucks you're paying an extra day for it to sit in the driveway. No other competitors do those times. That and also not having an unlimited mileage upgrade is also an issue that would stop me from renting again. We were going to rent an escape van to go to Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon this summer but the extra mileage would've been astronomical so we found alternative options. Again, other competitors offer an unlimited mileage plan. But aside from that I did enjoy myself in the escape vans and if you're aware with what I mentioned above, then it's free riding! I'd rent again but for short distances where you stay put, not a lot of driving.

"Black out curtains" installed cheaply and ineffectively

I showed up to pick up a van only to find $1000 fee for burning man they didn't inform me about when I made the reservation 6mo prior. As I had booked so early, fees had changed and I did not get the notices about the fees. To their credit, managment was understanding and reasonable with meeting me in the middle. Now onto the van: overall, it's a smart setup as the website videos show, good storage, easy kitchen, and spacious with a few notable exceptions. Aging fleet with problems like a broken driver's seat arm rest, a non working left stereo unless cranked to high volume, the "black out curtains" were installed with eyelet screws and helped but not in a meaningful way due to not covering the windows fully, and the futon pillows were different sizes leaving you sleeping on different levels probably from interchanging the pillows over the years. Also, not on the website but informed the day of, the 5 gallon water tank isnt potable water and the "solar" fridge needs to be charged daily (when it's hot outside) by running the engine for almost an hour. So, plan accordingly for shade, water, cold food, and comfort. Overall, the issues with the fees, despite management eventually being reasonable combined with the disappointing or broken features described above, the best I can give this place is 2 stars.

My experience in San Francisco with Escape was superb. I can't say enough about Jimmy, Chris and Nick... They were professional, friendly and kind. Especially Jimmy! Thank you guys! The LA office was alright... They could work on their people skills. But they were still nice guys. The van itself was brand new, beautiful and spotless. We - me and my sister- drove from LA to San Fran on Hwy 1. We had no problems at all. We just kept saying how we need to convert a van of our own. Everything you need to camp is included and in good shape. It was just awesome.

Not their fault, but it turns out that their neighborhood is not made for walking. There were no sidewalks on the Montague Expressway, so I basically took my life in my hands making my way over there on foot. Although I was told over the phone that it would take but 5 minutes to get me my car and for me to later return it as well, as this was a one man shop, it didn't quite turn out that way. I overlapped with a fellow returning a car ahead of me and another guy also returning a car who had unfortunately for him arrived after me. For I was a car rental newbie, and I was not about to be a quick turnaround. I had reserved an economy sized car for the better gas mileage, but was initially told that there were no cars of that group on the lot right now. That was discouraging... but the Budget employee headed out with a few keys in hand and then presented me with a Toyota Prius. I'm not a car person, so I didn't realize at the time that this was an upgrade till I checked the Budget website just now and found the Toyota Prius Hybrid priced at $87.99 vs Economy's current rate of $33.99. I think if I was more low key that the Budget guy would have left me right then. But I've never driven a Prius before, so I asked for an introduction to my new vehicle. And good thing I did! The Prius has a keyless entry system and ignition of which I have had absolutely no previous experience! See? Poor customer after me... Unfortunately the car was dirty - in other words the windows were tough to see through. For the front, I used the windshield wipers to fix that with a few sprays. The side mirrors I wiped with a sheet of tissue. The back window had to wait till I filled up on gas at a station and had the chance to do some manual labor with a squeegee. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I presume that perhaps the car was just returned that morn. My pick up time was scheduled for 8:15am. I got there at 8:20am. I was settled with my car by 8:35am. Not too bad. Now the Prius portion of my review. In short, I didn't like it. Sure, it is "green" and had terrific mileage. I imagine I drove over 300 miles over a two day rental period, but I only had to buy less than 7 gallons to refill the tank before returning it. It also had really good brakes. So, why didn't I like it? 1) The rear window was too narrow for a good clear view. 2) As I was driving down a winding road I had to duck to see the portion of the road that was blocked by the rear view mirror. 3) The Prius had a wider blind spot than I'm used to on my own car. 4) It also lacked a get up and go - it had super-slow acceleration - so I had to seek a wide berth when entering a street or highway. Since I didn't actually have to stick a key into the ignition to turn my vehicle on, I wish that the two "keys" weren't permanently attached to each other. Sure I understand that they do things this way so that we can't lose the spare key, but I would have loved to leave one in my purse and carry the other in my pocket. Instead I had this huge lump in my pocket till I transferred it over to my purse by the end of day 1. I was scheduled to return the Prius at 8:15am, and arrived on time only to find the Budget office located off of the Olson Brothers Auto Body Shop to be unmanned. Sean finally arrived at 8:25am, though I was getting nervous since my ride was going to be there at any time and we had a schedule to keep. According to one of the men at the body shop, the Budget guy is usually in by 8:30am, but I think he was stuck in traffic that day. (Hey, this is California, and traffic is its middle name!) I opted for a variety of insurance since my car at home was going to be out and about at the same time and so paid under $125 for two days rental; it would have been under $65 for just the car and tax. Hours: Sun 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM Mon - Fri 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sat 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM To avoid issues with pick up and drop off timing at this location, it might be best to set your reservation for 8:30am or later and to plan for the hand off to take 15-30 min.

I reserved an economy car (Chevy Spark) online. I show up and they try to hand me a Nissan Altima that looked like it had just finished a multi-year apprenticeship in Uber. Filthy inside, visibly beat up, and covered in damage. Not exactly the "fresh rental" vibe. Then comes the comedy: I declined their insurance (because why would I pay extra insurance for a car that already looks like it's been through three boss fights?) and the employee immediately hits me with a weird attitude like I'd personally insulted her bloodline. To top it off, they wanted to charge me more because the Altima is "more spacious"... as if "more spacious" automatically cancels out "dirty and wrecked."
