The first Michelin starred Restaurant in Copenhagen, no small feat in a city that at one time contained San Pellegrino's "World's Best Restaurant" Era Ora is more than a place to eat, it is an act of resistance and commitment in an era where nearly everything else of note has allowed "New Nordic" to change the way it's Chefs cook and think. Opened in 1983 and currently toqued by Antonio Di Criscio, the family owned and operated space in Christianshavn found along one of the area's canals on the opposite side of Torvegade from kadeau, Era Ora defines its style of cooking as "Italian Inner Fusion," nearly 90% of the ingredients including basics like Flour brought in from Italy to focus on influences dating back to the Romans and Greeks with a focus on creating new ideas with ancient roots, the idea operating without regard for Copenhagen's Cold and Dark Winters or all-out embrace of ideas such as pickling and foraging. Open Lunch and Dinner Monday through Saturday save for five Holidays, the current manager a youthful American Born Dane from California, it was on Tuesday afternoon that a total of only three guests dining at separate tables made their way into the restaurant decorated in Peach, Green, Floral Images and luxe Textiles, things admittedly 'slow' on weekday afternoons despite a relative bargain 598DKK 4-course Chef's Tasting that becomes around nine plates plus Bread when accounting for Canapes and Amuses. Describing 'inner fusion' as the idea that although distinctly "Italian" the food at Era Ora attempts to put ingredients from several regions on one plate, no specific style embraced across dishes of Antipasta, Pasta, Fish, Meat, Cheese or Dessert or a Wine list nearly 600 Bottles deep and almost exclusively from Italy, every meal at Era Ora begins by way of an Anti-pasti platter incorporating several big flavors, on this day a trio of Marinated Zucchini with Bell Pepper, a Tapioca Crisp perfumed in Licorice plus Mint and a pickled Turnip smeared in Garlic all vibrant and fresh with a piece of robustly crusted Sourdough served without Butter or Oil quick to follow. Explaining that Bread is intended only for scarpetta at Era Ora, the open crumb certainly well suited to the task of mopping up elegant Sauces across the plates to follow, it was next atop four stones that Chef Di Criscio welcomed diners, the trio of Crisps each showing off a different type of Grain from Italy and topped with everything from Raw Langoustine to housemade Ricotta and Wild Boar Bresaola shot and cured by the staff, the final bite a small pot of Sheep's Milk Cheese topped in Hazelnuts atop mashed Fava Beans. Italian for 'about time,' a concept embraced by both Era Ora's cuisine and art displaying the sun and moon in the foyer, it was perhaps forty minutes after seating that the first proper course of the menu was presented, the Manager playing the role of server and describing a flavor profile that started sweet and ended with a bit of spice, the fact that Opuntia grows in Italy previously unknown but the gel of its Fruit doing a beautiful job of highlighting the Halibut while also mellowing the Peppers imported from Tuscany. Well portioned for a tasting menu, each course enough to give diners an opportunity to explore ingredients on their own and then in combination, course two was a fortunate find for those who live in parts of the world where Salt Cod is not considered a delicacy, the three Black Raviolis stuffed just short of bursting with creamy filling and a lot of brine that found itself well met by confit Tomatoes, a light Cream Sauce ringed in Parsley Oil and pan-seared Chickpeas. Sopping up every last drop of Sauce from the Pasta and accenting to a continuation of lunch, the kitchen clearly working well beneath capacity and thus happy to fire plates at a pace dictated by diners, the day's entrée was served with a story about how importing Veal allows the restaurant to skirt Denmark's Laws forbidding the butchering of young Animals, a thick sirloin lightly fried and fork-tender on a backdrop of Egg Yolks and Vinegar plus sautéed Leeks and Haricot Verts. Taking a pass on Cheese, the 100DKK Supplement not a favorite as offered topped in Chipotle and Parsley, it was with a dish featuring Peaches imported the day prior that the meal ended, a disc of tangy Semifreddo anchoring ingredients including Ice Cream, Nasturtium Flowers, Chocolate Mousse and Mint, the individual flavors pleasant and an ability to mix and match interesting but none of it really congruent in the way that the dishes before it had been and thus an unfortunate way to end what was otherwise a noteworthy meal in a Restaurant that stands out in a dining scene that sometimes seems flawed by conformity. read more

While I was impressed by the service and presentation, I felt the food overall for the rating and price did not deserve 5 stars. We had some people that had allergy to seafood and it seemed rather than devise something wonderful to replace they just took the fish out. Remember this is a $200 USD a person type of place and thought more effort should be made. Again service was great, some of the food had genuine ingenuity and taste. But having been to one, two and three star Michelin star restaurants, I would say this was a 3 star priced, and did not blow me away. All others have. As I understand it they are a one star. I've had the pleasure of dining at some of the top restaurants in Copenhagen as well as a few abroad, and from my experience Era Ora is definitely among the most satisfying of these visits. My girlfriend and I invited my mother out for her birthday on a Saturday evening. The primary waiter had a tremendous amount of knowledge of the food and wines to go with it, and communicated this in a very humourous and dedicated way. I don't usually pay a pretentious amount of attention to the wine that accompanies my food, but our waiter really made me consider how the wine actually played an important role in the whole dining experience. As a final touch to celebrate my mother, a chocolate cake had been prepared for desert. We highly enjoyed that they unexpectedly made my mother's birthday extra special. Era Ora receives our warmest recommendations, and we hope to be back again some day! read more

Era Ora is by all standards amazing. The venue, service, and food set the very highest standards for Italian cuisine in Northern Europe. Every dish was an adventure, a traditional dish with a modern twist. Ambiance is relaxed and a great place for a date (between two investment bankers or management consultants after bonus payout). It is pricey, so definitely factor that in before getting a sticker shock when menu is handed out. That would ruin the experience. But it's worth it. It is also one of the most consistent restaurants in Copenhagen. Top level and a Michelin star for several years. read more

I was so excited to finally this place but do not be mistaken. Although 90%of their produce comes from Italy, it's not necessarily tradition Italian food, but more of cuisine inspired by Italy. I love the bread and olive oil it to die for. There was a great ravioli dish with lobster and also fantastic chicken dish. The interior is modern with great touches like the chandelier and the wine pairing is very good. I can understand why this is the oldest Michelin star in Copenhagen. Impressive. We went to Era Ora for my birthday. Had a nice table with a lovely patio view. The decor of the place is interesting, modern but with a twist. Our server was very good, his English was clear and he was happy to guide us through all the dishes and wines. We had the full menu with a wine lovers menu. The food presentation was excellent, as well as the tastes. My favorite dishes were panna cota of toma cheese, ossobucco, fagottino of zucchini, lamb ragout and braised veal. Yes, there were all sorts of meat actually a rabbit too! I liked the cheese plate a bit better than the dessert assortment. The wines were quite good, they matched to the food that was served and some of them were actually replaced from the limited edition menu, no objections there :) Great place for a special occasion. And if I should go back to my ranking: Noma, Geranium, Era Ora, Little red cottage and Formel B makes it in the Michelin star class. And I would still not recommend Relae. Era Ora is definitely recommended. read more

This was our first prix fixe Italian dining experience. We agreed that this is an excellent restaurant, with outstanding service. However, my companion was sated early on and asked to stop the onslaught of courses (there was a small discount provided for this, as we discovered when we later got the bill). I, happily, persevered, eating every morsel of everything, except the deserts, which I sampled with some modicum of restraint. Of special distinction were the truffle risotto and the langoustines (which were creatively presented with a Saran-type covering which un-loosed an aroma of appetizing smokiness when lifted from the bowl; but everything was exquisitely prepared and the ingredients were of the best quality. The risotto was perhaps the best I've ever had; on par with Per Se in New York. A very extensive, purely Italian, wine list was perfect for the set meal. We chose a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino in lieu of the wine pairings and we were quite happy with our choices. The ambience is quiet and refined, and there are not many tables in the restaurant. A giant gold colored chandelier is perhaps a little out of place, but did not mar this extraordinary dining experience. This is not an inexpensive restaurant, but it is fairly priced for the quality of the food and the overall dining experience that you receive. We would definitely return, although this is not a place where your dietitian would allow you to eat regularly. read more

Our family will be talking about our experience at Era Ora for years. We have been fortunate to enjoy many fine dining experiences, and Era Ora is the new gold standard for us. We did the full meal with full wine pairings (the Wine Lovers menu), which made for a very expensive evening indeed, but worth every penny. Our headwaiter, Fabio,was attentive, knowledgeable, and very passionate about the food and wine (exclusively Italian wines --- we got a memorable education in Italian white wines, in particular). He stated upfront that the emphasis is on flavor and backed it up: Every course was extraordinary, culminating in the "Pascolo poetry" dessert (cimbro cheese, rhubarb, and foccacia bread, paired with a Moscato wine). We were there for close to 3-1/2 hours. We took an "intermission" before main courses for an enjoyable and informative visit to the wine cellar. The restaurant itself was intimate and quiet. This was my first dining experience at a Michelin star restaurant in Copenhagen. I'm not sure that it can get much better than this. We had every course on the menu (which changes daily) and were impressed by each food we tasted. The ingredients were delicious, presentation of the food was beautiful, and wine pairings were perfect. The service was great with full descriptions of each food and wine we tasted. It was quite expensive with the wine, but the experience lasted all evening and kept me smiling long afterward. read more

We dined here our second night in Copenhagen. The food is exceptional and the decor elegant - the tables are carved wood and so beautiful. So why not five stars? Two reasons: one, this restaurant is cagey about pricing. The website only lists sample seasonal dishes and no pricing, and the reviews online show prices far lower than the actual price. Plan on $200 per person WITHOUT wine. Our meal was $1,000 for five with no alcohol other than two glasses (total) of champagne. They do not show you a menu and we were expecting dinner to run us $600 not $1,000. Two: there was a birthday in our party and no one acknowledged it which I thought was rude. Great food although a bit contrived; also, the main course was lamb which I detest (and it's a fixed menu). The dessert was fantastic, however, as was the pasta course. read more

I came here by myself for lunch as I did not have time for a dinner reservation. The Brazilian server was so charismatic and conscientious about my having a good food dining experience. The dishes were immaculately prepared with such detail. You almost don't want to eat it because its too perfectly put together. It was very delicious from start to finish.
