Tonight I was in need of something to eat. I didn't eat much today and I barely ate at all yesterday, so I was lowkey starving. Because I didn't have all night and just wanted something quick and hopefully cheap, I did a quick search on Yelp and browsed down my options. That's when I came across this place I'd never heard of before tonight which apparently opened very recently and has just one review so far. Because that review was a 4-star and the food in the photos looked appetizing, I decided to head over there since it wasn't far from the train station at all. It's almost right across the street from where the southbound ramp to I-95 is located.
Honestly, it's not an easy place to spot. It blends in well with other places here in East Main, so I wouldn't fault you if you completely missed the place, even if you were walking. It's very small inside, but like the other reviewer and fellow Elite mentioned before me, there are a few tables you can eat in at. I was obviously not doing that because the whole purpose of coming here was to get something and go.
Ordering was a bit of a challenge for me, but I was able to indicate what I wanted just by pointing to what I had wanted and the employee was able to listen accordingly, so that worked out fine. Where I will criticize my ordering experience however is when it came time to pay. So they have that machine you use when want to use Apple Pay, so I attempted that first. The problem? I tried to hold it near the reader and my phone wouldn't do anything, even after a few attempts to get it to work. Thankfully I had my debit and used that, but either I suck with their machine or their Apple Pay feature ain't working. Either way, it would be nice to be able to use Apple Pay and have it be efficient, you feel?
So getting to the food, I went with the 6 tender combo and an orange soda. In these combos you can choose between fries and fried plantains. Honestly, the fries looked unremarkable in person, but the plantains looked good in the picture, so the plantains I chose. One thing I will compliment this place on is that the portions are big for the price. I got this for a little over $15 all told, and there was so much food in my container that they had to use a rubber band to hold it closed. Once I got all my stuff, I headed back to the Bridgeport Train Station, and I could smell an alluring aroma all throughout my walk back.
When I got there, I opened everything up and began my review of the food. The plantains looked and smelled quite a bit better than they actually tasted. When I had my first bite, I'd noticed that the plantain inside was thin and bland. Maybe I just took a bad one, so I tried a second one. Nope. Still bland. I next tried a tender. They taste similar to what you might get at a KFC, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. They at least give you some salt and ketchup for your meal, so I put on some salt on my food, about two packets worth. I decided to try the plantain again to see if the salt did anything. The salt was there, but other than that, I didn't really notice a change in how they tasted. For the chicken though, the salt did bring out the flavor there a tad more. As for the soda I got, it wasn't really sweet, but it was a good Dominican soda.
Overall, I wouldn't rush to come here again, but I would choose this over that Chipotle whose shadow this place is in if I'm in need of something cheap in Bridgeport. read more
