Hired them for chimney cleaning after purchasing a new house. The technician set up, then said he couldn't clean the chimney because it took a turn instead of going straight up. I still got charged for the visit, despite the technician saying he wouldn't charge me. I was so frustrated about the situation I paid it and sent him on his way. I had Jeff look at my main fireplace chimney cap for replacement. While he was there, he took pictures and showed me the chimney cap for my addition fireplace. He explained I should have that one replaced also, as it was poorly installed and collecting water. I told him to give my a bid to replace both chimney caps. He sent the bid which was just shy of $1800. I wasn't surprised, as I had gotten other bids to replace just the main chimney cap from several other companies for around $1000. I received a call from their office to schedule installation of ONE chimney cap. I asked about the second one and got no reply or explanation. The following day an installer called to say they were on their way to install ONE chimney cap. Again, I asked about the second cap. I was told only one cap was ordered. Jeff called me to explain only one chimney cap was on the bid. I told him he was to bid for two. I told him other companies bids were much lower to replace just the main cap. Friendly and helpful from the very call. I called for a cleaning and inspection and they helped me understand exactly what to expect. We've been in the house 3 years and have used the fireplace but were concerned with needing it cleaned. The employee showed up right on time and him and Hubby walked through what he saw. He ended up not doing the cleaning because he found multiple concerning items. He advised it was not safe to use (this was a concern of ours as it was a previous homeowner remodel that we believe they did themselves) and he recommended we look into other options. The employee advised he would follow up with us on his recommendations of what we could do and we haven't heard back from him -that is why I deducted a star here. Don't believe the negative reviews-- which seem to be from a long time ago. We got top notch service from these guys. I paid for an inspection to see how everything was doing in our fireplace and chimney. The technician was very thorough and explained everything he was doing along the way. We discussed adding a chimney cap and a replacement chase cover. I got some expert advice on how to remedy the rust on our steel chimney. Along with the inspection report, complete with pics, I also got a fair price quote the next day for the cap and cover along with sample pictures of those items. We signed up for the cap and cover, and the office staff kept us updated on the progress leading up to installation. A couple weeks later, Garrett and his crew came out to install everything. Had them come out to give me an estimate and took time out of work to meet the technician. Gave him drone photos of the problem and said they would get back quickly with an estimate, one week later, they said gaining access to my two story chimney was too difficult and the decorative nature too precise, so they refused to bid the job. I suggest you only consider using English Sweep if you have very basic jobs, they are so flush with work, they only want the easy stuff. Look for a local mason to get a good bid. read more

My chimney looked awful. I had paid to have fixed about 10 years ago and found out it had been leaking into the decking and there were structural issues with the chimney. The guys came out took all the concrete off repair the roof decking and made the chimney flue into the chimney. It looks great. read more

I decided to use English Sweep for my own fireplaces, I am disappointed that the fireplaces were left in the condition they were after having them swept and cleaned, this is by far the worst job l have ever seen. I had the inside of my chimney rebuilt and also had my chimney on the outside rebuilt. They not only do good work but are very good about putting tarps on the floor and cleaning up their mess. They were prompt too and came around 7:00 every morning. When they were done they swept and swiffered my floor. I would definitely use them again and would highly recommend them as well. read more

We called them then for a minor update, and it was obvious why our agent raved about their service - their professionalism really stood out. We've used English Sweep's stellar cleaning service ever since, and then recently discovered cracks in the internal chimney that needed to be repaired. We have an older house, so the renovation meant tearing out & rebuilding the 'fireboxes' [fireplaces] for access. Dear reader - I gotta tell you - much as I liked the English Sweep team, I was dreading the repair. I work from home. Another construction company had just finished working on a more minor issue, and their process was a red hot mess. I assumed a more complex chimney reno would be nothing but soot and chaos. It wasn't. English Sweep rocks. Their front-end communication was clear, they showed up right on schedule, and told us what to expect from them that week. And then - somehow - they tore out old fireboxes in the middle of our house and repaired our chimneys without making a mess. Seriously - no sooty footprints, no dust-all-over, no rubbish to step around when the crew left each night. It was a 3-day job, and I've never seen a crew work so hard. I called Englis Sweep to inspect and repair, if necessay, my unvented gas fireplace in our newly purchased home. The man who was a long time employee of the company got the fireplace running after about 20 minutes. About 5 minutes after he left the fire went out. He got back here rather quickly and told me I needed a new Oxygen Sensor. He said he had to order one and would call me with a quote as soon as he got the price. This was Sept. 29, 2022. I called him about 4 days later and he said he was waiting for a quote. I called him about 5 days or so after that and he said he was still waiting as he had a email out for a qoute. It is now Oct. 16, 2022,18 days later, and I have never heard back from the guy. After some investigation I found out that an oxygen sensor for my brand fireplace is carried on the truck of many other repair companies. These guys might be very good at "cleaning chimneys" but if you need a real fire place repair company do not call English Sweep . It was a complete waste of time and $229!! Ralph C. read more

Did a decent job of the sweep but the inspection was a total attempt to rip off the customer! Biding a total overhaul of the chimney including tearing off and replacing 38 rows of brick, a steal chimney liner and new flashing for a total of $21,000 claiming the chimney would start shedding brick on our heads. Recently had these guys inspect my chimney. Was told they are way overpriced but had them come anyway. They did the inspection and told us we need well over 12k worth of repairs to make it usable. Thinking they were full of shit we had a second opinion. The other guys checked it out and said they looked fine. It needed some repair but no where near what we were quoted. Shortly after moving into my new house, I scheduled a chimney sweep for my wood burning fireplace. The technician showed me on his camera how the cracked tiles in the chimney made operating the fireplace unsafe. I was provided an estimate for repairs to fix the problem. The workers that showed up were friendly and the work was completed quickly and thoroughly. I have to say how pleased I was with the attitude of the workers. Unrelated to the work being done on the fireplace, I had a water leak that required an emergency repair. The water to my house was shut off, creating difficulty for the technicians from English Sweep - they needed water to mix the compound they were using for the repairs. The workers had a great attitude and found an alternative source of water so that they could finish the job. Do not use this company if you aren't familiar ahead of time with the extent of your job. My chimney needed extensive cleaning, a liner and a top grate. The positive is that they responded to my emergency carbon monoxide situation in a quick and courteous way. The negative is that 2 months later the top grate cover broke leaving access to nesting squirrels causing expense and damage. I'd rather have had them tell me they couldn't complete the job than give false security that caused more hassle. Not sure what's happened. We've used English Sweep in the past and they showed up when they said they would and did good work. This year, I contacted them in early November to do some work for us, both indoor & outdoor. The earliest appointment I could get was the first week in January. When the date arrived, I knew that they would not be able to do the outside work due to snow over the previous few days. But when the technician (owner?) showed up, I expected that he would fix the stoves. Despite my having explained the problems in detail when making the appointment, he came without any materials to make the repairs. He looked at the stoves, and said I'd have to schedule another appointment. I had taken a half day off work to wait for and meet him. I called the office to schedule the second appointment. I even called the office the morning of the scheduled appointment to verify that someone would come out. Later that day, I got a voice mail saying that the technician would, in fact, not be coming. I had, once again, scheduled personal leave from work to meet him. We've been unable to use of one of our stoves during the coldest winter we've had since the stoves were installed. I am now working with another company that, after one phone call, has ordered parts and will have them in hand, ready to install when their technician arrives. read more

TOO BAD I CANT GIVE A NEGATIVE....didn't actually fix problem, first chimney cap was so poorly fit..had to beg them to have it redone. ...I still have bats in summer in the over hang now...they were supposed to tuck point.. barely touch it, I can find mortar falling out still..I can still see holes all over the masonry. .never addressed the leak problem...had to get them back out several times, they did show up when they said though...just did horrible job...not to mention the problem with the bill that they said I owed and I had the credit card charge right in front of me. .basically called me a liar for weeks...so for a couple grand I got a poorly fit sheet metal chimney cap....oh yeah I got owner to come out and he gave me another estimate for 10,000 to fix the leak....no thanks.... read more

I would highly advise anyone in St. Louis to avoid these rip off artists. They charged me $370 for one hours work - with one guy with a masonry drill drilling a hole through my brick exterior wall and sleeving it with a tin cylinder that cost $10 max. Wow, what a value. Never again! When I agreed to the work they INSISTED on a $100 deposit immediately and then proceeded to screw around for a month not bothering to schedule me work, reach out to me, or apologize for delaying my project. Then, when they did come and work the workman literally practically insisted on payment in full from me for the balance on the spot - before I could even determine if his work was going to hold up to a few runs of the dryer. That's how con men act - get your money before you can figure out how much they ripped you off. Then, when I flamed their performance - justifiably so - for price and service - in an email survey that THEY sent ME, after which time some guy fro their office called me night and day and blew up my phone only to what? Not to offer a discount, not to explain their outrageous overpricing, and not to apologize, just basically to put me on mute while I complained and then do nothing at all. Why they even called to follow up with me I don't know - probably just to say that they did, which, without making things better to the customer, is just another con. Their business model is obviously charging busy people whose expertise is in other industries , and who don't know the costs in this simple business, a laughably inflated overcharge and then looking out for the next sucker after they burn that one. I doubt they have much repeat business, but don't let yourself be a mark, and avoid these guys at all costs. When you use ANYONE other than English Sweep, do yourself a favor and INSIST on a bid based on HOURLY WAGE - an then supervise the work. Don't let these clowns - or anyone else - give you a bid on the "job"without identifying hourly labor cost if you are installing a dryer vent through an outside wall of your home. It's a menial labor skill that a donkey could do - don't get caught paying $350 an hour for work that's worth $35 an hour max. I would give zero stars of I could. read more
