My gas fireplace went out. Mad Hatter came out and said it was beyond repair. Going over option the cheapest was an electric fireplace for $5200. I was told it was cheaper than a new gas fireplace. I agreed. A couple of weeks later he came out for an install and did a crappy job. When I complained he said he'd have to get more materials and come back. Then he told me it would be an additional $510! Said he never saw a fireplace with my measurements. This was a self proclaimed expert who had been working many years doing this work. In a second visit he spent 5 hours installing correcting his previous errors. I have two questions that should prevent you from ever using this company. 1. When I approved the purchase, he took my fireplace measurements. Yet I was charged an extra $500 because he came unprepared to do my job on his first visit. 2. A heating guy who is a friend said I got taken. He said the fireplace repair was usually a $300-$400. He said to replace a gas fireplace was about $1,500 at most. So in his estimation yes, I was taken. I will be contacting the BBB. read more

Had The Mad Hatter replace my fireplace panels, and it was a terrible experience. They failed to disclose no warranty until after the job was done. I followed all their instructions, and within a month the panels started cracking and eventually became unsafe to use. Their technician confirmed they were unsafe and the owner blamed me for the cracking and refused to take any responsibility. Communication was awful. Months of ignored calls and emails. The only solution they provided me with was to buy new panels and pay for the whole job at full pricing again for their failed work. I tried finding a common ground of potentially sharing the costs just to get this resolved and they wouldn't budge at all. They don't stand behind their service. I would not use them again. Service tech Kenny insisted our gas fireplace was shot and dangerous to use. Quoted us $18,000 to replace but bc we were the first customer of the year we got a $2K discount. Also insisted we had to make that decision immediately or lose the discount. We started checking around to find what he was charging $16K for really only a $9-10K job. But before we did that we had the fireplace inspected again by another company and absolutely nothing was wrong with it. I would never recommend this company for any service work. Overpriced and greedy. Scheduled a chimney cleaning and inspection (for an occupancy permit) and they failed me because the metal screen didn't slide as easily as it should have. I Paid $300!. My plan was to replace the screen myself and get a reinspection. They told me the reinspection cost was $200 so I called another company. Their inspection cost $45 and they passed it and said the screen was fine. read more

In February, we called The Mad Hatter regarding a repair on a malfunctioning direct vent gas fireplace heater. The 2-man crew was on-time, friendly, and seemingly knowledgeable. As they dismantled the unit for cleaning, they informed us that it was a discontinued model so no replacement parts would be available, and could not be repaired. They also identified several other problems with the fireplace and chimney, and recommended a complete rebricking of our chimney. They proposed a new gas fireplace unit and repairs on the chimney, both of which were about $10,000 for a total repair/replacement bill of $20,000. We chose to get a second opinion. On March 11, we had a crew out from The Fireplace and Grill Center. We told them the findings from The Mad Hatter. They told us they would have whatever parts were needed for the repairs, if any were necessary. They inspected the fireplace unit, cleaned the igniter, and started it right up. It worked perfectly. They showed us a feature we didn't know our unit had , and also gave us some pointers on how to run it more efficiently. All for the cost of the service call. We will definitely be using Fireplace and Grill Center for our fireplace maintenance or repairs going forward. read more

Kenny was very vocal and knowledgeable of the process and educated us on the inner workings of our HVAC system. We had many services scheduled; air duct cleaning, chimney sweep and dryer vent cleaning. Kenny was also very knowledgeable about our specific insert and noticed a potentially hazardous issue with our backplate and a rusted cover. We hired this company to clean our chimney. They didn't replace the cap properly and it blew off. We called them and told them they need to put the cap back on. They came out and looked at it and said my roof is too high. It's the same height as when they cleaned the chimney. They haven't come back. This cost $600.00 read more

They gave my elderly parents an estimate of several thousand dollars to telling them it was necessary to replace major fireplace parts and the brick chimney. Fortunately, my husband and I intervened and called a reputable company we had used and the estimate several thousand dollars less. The chimney simply needs tuckpointing. Our chimney was unsafe and needed to be relined. We got a few bids, and The Mad Hatter's estimate was about half of the others, who were all trying to upsell us. We live in a 1960 house where nothing is standard, and when they came to do the work last week it became clear that they couldn't get our 500lb concrete chimney cap off. They came up with a way to do it from below, but a straightforward 1 day job became 2 full days in disgusting weather. Despite all of that, they got it done professionally and I'm warming my feet by the fire as I write this. Their price remained firm even though the job turned out to be much more complex than anticipated. I hardly ever write online reviews, but these guys were top-notch. He was on-time, professional, and very efficient with his work. He was able to fix the clog in our gas line and made a few changes to improve the maintenance of our unit. The Mad Hatter came out to do a chimney cleaning and fireplace inspection of my two gas and one wood burning fireplaces. The workman scratched my fire doors with his equipment and the worst thing is he closed the dampers on my gas fireplaces! Before he started working there were clamps or brackets that were put on the dampers to prevent closing because the pilot lights and fires must have a place to vent. The workman didn't bother to tell me he closed the dampers so that night I lit one of the gas fireplaces and about 30 mins later I started to get dizzy and feeling bad and there was a terrible smell coming from the fireplace so I turned it off. Once it cooled down I looked inside and found that the damper was completely closed!! PLEASE DON'T USE THIS COMPANY! THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME OR HEALTH! I had another fireplace company come out to give me a bid on some repairs and they couldn't believe that the dampers were closed on the two gas fireplaces and told me it was unsafe and opened them for me. When Mad Hatter came back to reinstall the brackets the owner came in and looked inside both fireplaces and then went to his truck to get the brackets and when he went to install them he said they were already there and that the dampers couldn't have been closed. So why did he go to his truck to get new brackets?? Luckily it wasn't just my word, but the other company saw them closed. THIS IS NOT AN HONEST OR CAPABLE COMPANY! DO NOT USE THEM! read more
