Am I losing my mind? Forgot it was Monday night, had to check my phone to make sure. Line was out the door with most of the tables being occupied so I thought it was Friday evening! Since this was my first time at Encinitas Fish Shop I didn't have a clue. . . Well, after first bite I knew why. . . We started with shrimp ceviche which had the perfect tang and spices, it was so good I picked up the bowl and drank the juice after tortilla chips were no longer useful. Next, blackened salmon salad and ahi tacos arrived and they both blew me away too. Each bite was better than the one before. I couldn't get enough. I'm not a day drinker so after my second brewsky at camp, I napped pssed sunset and woke up too cold and hungry to cook in the dark outside. Soooo.... I Ordered a late night dinner of fish stew with bread via DoorDash to our CAMPSITE and it was piping hot still and sooo delicious eating it fireside. Stew is hearty full of fish including salmon and tuna, shrimp and savory onions n celery. We ordered a large size and asked for three bowls and utensils and they were so kind to serve it in three individual bowls, tightly secured with tape, keeping it from spilling. It's by no means a fancy place and you're expected to order at the register, seat yourself and they'll bring your order to you. I always get the sashimi appetizer which is served with a small portion of the best seaweed salad. The coconut fried shrimp is delectable, sweet and crispy which is served with rice. The shrimp and chips is a humongous portion with plenty of shrimp to go around. Their clam chowder, salads and tacos are just as amazing. So so so glad that we chose to stop into Encinitas Fish Shop for lunch! Fair warning, we stopped in around 2 on a Saturday afternoon and it was still super hoppin! Make sure you plan ahead for the crowd, as it seems like it stays pretty busy. That being said, the food is well worth the wait. The line moves pretty quickly and service is friendly. We were able to move through the line within about 15 mins (despite the line being out the door and down the street) and snag a table on the covered patio--I loved this a lot because there were a number of happy pups on the patio! I had the fish and chips, and they were excellent. The fish was nice and flaky and the breading not overly oily. The fries were really crispy but still nice and potatoey. The rest of our party had a handful of various tacos and all of them came back with rave reviews. In particular, the elote and local halibut tacos seemed to be a real hit. Also, they were some pretty large tacos. No tiny street taco bs here! Definitely recommend checking out Encinitas Fish Shop if you're in the area, but good luck finding parking! My husband and I were visiting some friends in Encinitas and really wanted to try a place with fresh fish. We are so glad we came here for our fish fix! They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, we did not have to wait at all on a Sunday at lunch time. The menu was somewhat overwhelming because of all the create-your-own options! It would be nice to have a few more "Fish Shop Favorites" of pre-made taco combinations on their menu for people like me who are indecisive! We got a few different tacos and our favorite was the blackened swordfish, it was delicious and so fresh. We also loved the shrimp ceviche with chips that we shared as an appetizer. Everything had affordable prices and great portion sizes. This was a fun place to hang out and they have many alcoholic drink options plus TVs showing several different football games. Once at our table, I accidentally knocked over my glass of wine reaching for some napkins and it went all over the place. A friendly server was on it right away and then he very kindly gave me a fresh glass of wine. The weather was beautiful, which made for perfect alfresco dining on their patio. My salad was fine--the greens were nice and fresh and it was tasty overall, but the crab cakes were too much cake and not enough crab for my liking. This is quickly becoming our 'go to' place in Encinitas as locals. Why? The food is great and the portions ample. The prices are fair, they are super friendly to kids, and they have the right attitude. We all enjoyed our meals (all 12 of us) as a family. But I always look for character in people, restaurants and businesses, especially in the face of adversity. Last night, there was a mistake in the order... two dishes were missed when I ordered it; The staff there didn't hesitate... they didn't point blame back on me (the customer)... instead, they resolved the matter quickly and with smiles. Said to not worry about it and it was 'probably their fault'. I tried to pay and they insisted not to. In my opinion, whomever is managing this place, deserves kudos of some sort. My family didn't have a slight gap in our enjoyment and the evening went on. This is not a fancy place and they don't have waiters who have worked there for 15 years... it is a place you can come dressed as you are, pull up a picnic table seat and chow down on the deliciousness of fresh fish served the way you want. There are also a variety of beers and wines, bottle (beer and wine), can, or draft. This is our 6th or 7th time back and we will continue to support this local restaurant. read more

Overpowering an already frozen flavorless dry fish. The amount of breading was more than the amount of fish. Guys, it's not called breading and chips! Easy on the breading. The fries were served limp and warm. The clam chowder was also flavorless with no clams in it. It was more like creamy potato chowder. Calamari was dry as well. Their house beer was the only item that was good. Which they didn't make. The place looked good with people in line to order. The service was good and attentive. But, the food was not even up to par. I was staying with some friends in Del Mar for a few days and we went here twice. It was THAT good and you should definitely stop by the Encinitas fish shop if you get a chance. I was very impressed. I tried a few different tacos. There was one called the Pineapple Express I believe that was top notch. mahi-mahi with a pineapple bbq sauce. I also got the diver scallop tacos with garlic butter. Yum! The highlight from the menu without a doubt were the fish shop shrimp. Just enough spice but also sweet. I could eat about 10 orders of these by myself. Also, the service was quick and friendly! There are few things better in life than this place. But this ranks pretty freaking high on my list and it never gets old. Every single time, they kill it. So fresh it's insane and heavenly. Local caught fish as well as some of the best fresh fish in the case at all times. We always get the fish shop shrimp and the coconut shrimp because I mean, it's incredible. The mahi mahi ceviche is also bomb and so refreshing. I personally love the ahi tuna plate (seared) and think it's the best. My boyfriend loves it too but also loves trying out their daily special tacos and having his fix of the dorado taco. It's so damn good. There was quite a long line/wait for what you get, but it hit the spot on an evening fogged over by the San Diego marine layer.
